Who do you think is the best female vocalist of all time?

My friend and I were sorta debating about this topic. I said Mariah Carey.. my friend said Whitney Houston.

Thoughts?
Mudbug
I would say Annie Lennox.

Definitely Mariah Carey.

Her voice might not be AS good as before, but she used to have the best voice ever.

Sarah Vaughan.

crazy.gif please tell me that's sarcasm.... unsure.gif

imo:
Gladys Night/Pattie LaBelle/Chaka Kahn...pretty much all of the old school female singers. dude these women can BLOW.

nowadays i'd have to give props to:
Mariah/Whitney(early 90s for both)/Beyonce/Jenifer Hudson...there's some good talent out there smile.gif

buuut ''of all time'' is so subjective...um..maybe Pattie? sweatingbullets.gif it will probably change as i remember who really gives me goose bumps lol
Sammystic
For me the best female singer of all time will always be Whitney Houston. As long as I can remember I've been a fan of her singing.
Mariah Carey is close (I have her albums too biggrin.gif ), but her singing does not move me as much as Whitney's.
There are a few other good ones out there but they have yet to reach what the above mentioned have achived so far IMO.
Oh, how could I forget Aretha Franklin... that was a powerful singer (Whitney's still no.1 for me though tongue.gif ).
krankee
keyshia cole. keyshia cole. keyshia cole =]
13!hyukjae
CHI: A-Mei
KOR: Younha for me.
japanese: Utada Hikaru, Stephanie (imo. 5 octaves wth)
ENG: Mariah Carey
kayem7289
Mariah Carey probably if we are referring to the American industry.
I mean...She's been in the business for so long, and she can still belt out all the notes.
Whitney was sooooo amazing in her prime, but now, I'm not sure her voice is even stable anymore.
Shania Twain is also a vocalist I adore, as well as Celine Dion.
For Japanese artists, I'd say Utada Hikaru (since I'm not familiar with older artists). We all know that she doesn't have the best vocals or best control of her voice, but the way she carries her songs is brilliant. She has a beautiful and very alming voice in my opinion, and she's one of the best lyricists/self-composers out there right now in the jpop industry.
For Korea, it's the same situation, I'm not familiar with everyone. So I'll go with Big Mama, Gummi (sp.?) and Lee Soo Young.
lshluvr
Mariah Carey...no doubt about it.

Mariah Carey...Whitney Houston...and I don't know why no one has mentioned Christina Aguilera yet. I mean she's got a lovely voice for someone so young. So powerful. ;D
PockyUpNose
Christina Aguilera - Shes probably one of the few younger singers who has a powerful voice.

Ayumi hamasaki - yea yea, people are gonna go balistic, and say shes horrible, but i think shes amazing. She sold 50 million + album, there must be something shes doing right in her vocals.
addickshun
christina aguilera all the way,
she's got one of the most powerful and amazing vocals.
w4termelon

I would say Annie Lennox.

YES.

People like Whitney Houston are known for blowing the house down but I'm more keen to sweeter, softer voices. But Annie can also blow the house down when needed.
BOOMBOX
jennifer holiday! (back in the days anyway, her voice has changed so much. bet awards anyone?)

but i'd probably have to say mariah carey, whitney, keyshia cole, jennifer hudson etc.
i actually think jojo has a reallyyyyy good voice, not the best but yeah biggrin.gif
deppstar
For america,

Christina aguilera. I know there are many other superb female singers out there, but she is the ONE for my generation sweatingbullets.gif

Her LIVE is god smacking goood. Even better than on CD. Never mind that she had to dodge rumours of her lip-syncing about 5 songs for her "back to basics" concerts.

For Japan,

I do not listen much to japanese music, but I think ayumi has a pretty good voice. I used to dislike her shrieky high pitch tonality in the past, but along the way, she changed her style of singing to a lower pitch and she's sounding very good (to me) now. I Like her secret cd sweatingbullets.gif

For asia (chinese),

not much of a followist, but I think it would probably be A-mei or Stephanie Sun currently?
engot02
I pick .. Mariah Carey.
I love her songs <33;;
von-norelle
the Goddess Mariah Carey and Jennifer Hudson (OMG)......Misia and Utada Hikaru have amazing voice.....anyone mentioned PARIS HILTON....hehehehehehehehe.....................

A lot of black singers are pioneers of many styles and techniques in music particularly soulful singing. You can even hear and trace elements of soul from native Africans. So I think our current standards in music is an African heritage that spread through America and now the world when it adapted Western Popular Music. So in short, Africans are the best singers unless music as we know it was just an accident in time.
lccyn
