I decided to put this poll here instead of the Korean music section because I figured people here know not only about SM but also about Johnny's boys LOL.

For those who don't know, SM Ent. was founded by Lee Soo Man in Korea, and Johnny's Ent. by Johnny Kitagawa in Japan. Each company has their positives and negatives, and they are both the most well-known entertainments in Korea and Japan.

I have to go with SM even though I like Johnny's groups a lot because of my two favorite artists DBSK and BoA lol

I like JE, they were my first step into the "girly-boy-pop" phase, and I still love them~ ^^

I don't side, I kinda do like SM for their music since it's more catchy and sounds kinda better than most of JE's stuff (some of the songs are so wierd. =__=;; Like Kanjani8's new single, It's my soul!? o.O;; And Zukkoke Otoko Michi? @.@ They get old real fast~

....Although I will admit at the moment the younger JE boys arent as talented as the others (with the exception of tegomass)
and this comes from a big big JE fan

but you can't even begin to compare any boyband in SM to the likes of Smap, V6, Arashi and Kinki Kids
not by a long shot

Kinki kids, every single they make goes straight to #1 on oricon and they are in the Guiness book of world records

I remember recently alot of DBSK fans got angry because the new group Hey!Say!7 beat them on oricon
and said it's only because they are johnnys that they hit #1, I disagree because that was a catchy song


I can only say as far as boybands are concerned though

you can't really compare anyways because SM goes for both genders
while JE only has males.

Both entertainment companies have proved themselves to be the best in their respective "domains" lol
but because of the big Jpop industry A LOT of japanese artists have reached fame through singing for anime.
But when you think of ASIAN singers, Boa, Rain and Jay Chou are the most internationally known [plus others depending on the location]
Personally i like SM entertainment because theyve trained their stars to be both vocally talented, and dance well. Johnny's i think owns in more of the idol kinda thing for Japan. [respective target audiences] Though i see Super Junior heading kinda the same way. Im new to Kpop really, but didnt SM like save the kpop industry after Seo Taji?

I'm not too familiar with JE.
I chose SM because I love DBSG, 장리인, and SNSD.

I like the artists of both companies: DBSK, Kat-tun, NEWS, Jang Ri In...but I don't think I prefer one over the other.

EDIT: Shuuji to Akira should not be on the list because it was just a temporary sub-group (because of their drama "nobuta wo produce"). Yamapi ("Akira") is an official News member and Kame belongs to KAT-TUN.


I like Johnnny's boys since more than 5 years so I prefer them to sm ent..I couldn't live without the music of NewS, KAT-TUN or Arashi etc ^^ I love most of those groups since their debut.
But DBSK, SJ , Shinhwa or BoA are also amazing.

I used to be a HUGE fan of JE (arashi fan). but when it comes to music or vocals, most of the johnny boys that i liked are a bit lacking. (of course there are exceptions like Ohno, and Tegomass) and the music they were coming out with was not that great. I feel like most of the JE groups are kinda like SUJU, geared towards entertainment.
I dont think its fair to compare DBSK to JE in japan. Obviously JE is going to win, its their turf. You'll have to compare DBSK in Korea vs. JE in Japan, but thats just complicated.

and if we're talking about the founders of the company, i dislike both. Kitagawa is just weird and i hate how he pulls stuff like Hey!Say! Jump..(feeling sorry for yayayah). however i have a feeling LSM is heading in the same direction.

Currently both companies piss me off so I wish there was a neither option.
As for the current SM, I can honestly say I only support and fangirl over one person in there so I'm voting for JE. Overall, their artists are more well-rounded idols.

I choose JE, they know wht they're doing and they've been in the showbiz since the 60's. I have to admit majority of their artist are not talented in music wise but they are pretty good in other area such as acting and hosting. I mean if i'm not a fan of them, i would have not notice tht half or maybe 80% of the japanese drama have JE artist acting in it. Oh yeah, crazy promotion and having catchy songs really helps a lot. I mean i enjoyed listening to HEY SAY 7 songs thn THSK songs.

Sm are good in training their artist and their promotion skills are great but they always focus on certain artist and sometimes you barely heard any info from their artist for months untill their next album come out.( JRI, The trax and csjh)

well firstly....I think theyre BOTH SOMETIMES overrated....cause alot of Johnny's sound the same...and look the same.

And SM....well....I don't know what they're doing these days with Girls Generation and Super Junior....0______0.

I don't think you can really compare them since JE has been going on since the 60's and SM is relatively new compared to JE who started the whole boyband thing plus JE has only boys..but I don't know I know more JE stuff and I'm a really big JE fan so I guess i vote for JE!

Plus this is a K-pop forum so majority vote for anything korean wheather they like it or not in like any poll i'd be surprised if JE was winning...

Musically, SM has more artists that can actually sing and in my opinion makes better music.

And there may only be 5 of them, but vocally, DBSK would own about 85% of the Jimusho.

JE knows what they are doing, they have been in this business since 1960's, and they are still the number one entertainment company in Japan, probably the company that has the highest sales and profit for the past 10-20 years all of their groups are good and number one.

people might say JE artists doesnt know how to sing or dance, but an JE artist isnt suppose to be just singers, just dancers, because they are not singers and dancers, they are called Idols. They are actually the whole package, they give you entertainment, they sing, they dance, they host, they act, they compose, they produce, they direct etc. they are not just popular in Japan but also around the world.

If JE wasnt good at all, why do you think SM would buy rights for Johnny singles/CDs/DVDs?, why do you think Super Junior was named after Johnnys Juniors? ^^;;

I disagree about DBSK owning 85% of JE in singing

first of all DBSK is very auto tuned
and I'm sorry, they can't sing better than Smap, Arashi, V6, Tegomass
and many others, one thing I noticed about alot of Johnny's from especially the older ones is that they have
amazing harmony in there songs (Well not Ka-tun as much as I love them)

and SM basically is biting Johnny anyways
that's why I got pissed when every said JYP was copying SM when SM
was sweating Johnny from the get go.

I think Johnnys will be around for ever
while SM is bound to go downhill

whoa..this is hard since i love most of the artists from both company and it's kinda weird to compare both because JE trained them boys to be idols and SM artists are more into the singing/mc-ing/dancing? and not so much in the acting business..but..i chose SM. Mainly because most of the artists under sm seem more talented than the JE boys..and yes, DBSK can sing and dance better than the JE boys, imo. hahah as much as i love j-pop,the dance moves always seem a bit odd to me sexy but odd..but that's just a matter of taste. then again the JE boys are awesome too because they're trained to do all the singing,dancing,mc-ing,acting etc. they're amazing for that i especially love their acting abilities..

I grew up liking JE. Before I knew about korean pop. So Im with JE. Although SM ain't that bad since they brought us Shinhwa.

We can agree to disagree.

Smap has certainly improved since their debut and they are HUGE and well loved ( I love them too!) but again they aren't really known so much for their vocal prowess as much as being great tv personalities. Arashi, excluding Ohno can be hit or miss, I haven't heard enough V6 to judge, but TegoMass is one of the more promising units vocally and out of everyone you named are the most likely in the minority 15% a whole.

There is also the matter of personal taste, and while I enjoy seeing some Johnny's act or on tv hosting something, the vast majority of JE music doesn't appeal to me. And since the goods that I am most often purchase from either company are CD's, I am most critical of the music.

i prefer k-pop than j-pop,

I like the SM artists they have produced more than the JE ones. I never really got into jpop boybands. Well I did get into WFL during 03?, but they aren't even JE but avex? I think..lol Poly Canyon. Jpop boy bands seem more fruity? I don't know any other word to describe it LOL

I was a J-Pop fan before I got into the whole K-pop craze.
Anyhow, both companies have their pros and cons.
I'm a big fan of DBSK but SM arnt managing them very well.
I love JE too but some of the boys in there arnt too talented but most of them are.
I listen to more of SM songs then I do for JE. I just love seeing JE boys in dramas ;]

I definitely choose JE, but like people have pointed out, these companies are rather different in what their focus is on their artists.
JE is managing idols, and SM, artists.
It's just that people say that JE music all sounds the same, but I think the same way about kpop.
Half the time, their voices all sound the same to me, and I don't like the whole hip-hop R&B thing I always hear.
I am not a fan of any of SM's artists, except for maybe a select few in Super Junior or DBSK.
Johnny's been doing this for a long time and they are called Idols for a reason. And simply put, they entertain and interest me more than SM artists.

I'm very ANTI-JE now, so I'm rooting for my Dong Bang boys to make it in Japan.

Hm.. this is a Korean forum, so the most obvious winner for this poll, on this forum, will definitely be SM, no doubt about that.

I don't really care much for SM. Nor do I care for JE.

However, seeing as DongHae is only one of the hundreds of people in SM to appeal to me, (and Big Bang doesn't have anything to do with SM ,) my vote goes to JE.

It's not that I don't like k-pop. It's just that a majority of SM's artists do not appeal to me. Whereas from JE, there are bands like NEWS, KAT-TUN that appeal to me.

But this is just my opinion.

If I have to chose musically, then I would have to lean towards Sm because they have DBSK. I think they are better than most groups in JE as singers. I was crazy about Smap and Arashi but now I just can't get enough of DBSK. I never did like Kat-tun or Hey Say Jump. But as entertainers, JE pwns all in SM. I love watching dramas with Jin, Yamapi and Kame. SM is trying to make their artists be more well rounded but super junior and Girls Generation isn't cutting it.

I voted for SM because IMO they have more talented artists and Shinhwa was the first Korean boy band I was obsessed with. However, JE is much more popular and are better at promotion as some of the replies have stated, because they have been around longer.
They keep their idols grounded and some can actually go out in public without being mugged (too much), but they are also too strict in some areas (eg dating in public, photos), which I really don't like.
Sm also has more variety as they also have female artists while JE is solely for male entertainers. I also think that their bands are closer than JE. Like DBSK are like brothers whie compared to NEWS for eg, who are close but aren't really that close. I don't know, I guess their interactions can make me like the band more sometimes.

If you talk talent wise SM owns it. SM train their trainees to be ready in manners,personality,acting, modeling and dancing.SM KNOWS what he is doing and knows what the public wants. Even though LSM is a total ass he makes his trainnes' dreams come true.
