Budaixi (Chinese: 布袋戲; Pinyin: bùdàixì) is a form of puppetry popular in Taiwan. It originated in the Fujian province of China.

the costume and make-up are amazing~

In Taiwan and China (not sure about Japan) I think there are 3 main streams of cosplay, Anime/Manga, VK and Budaixi so there are quite a few cosplayers who specialize in Budaixi... remember the event in Taiwan where they released a cosplay magazine and Stay + Karum was on TV? For the first issue they picked a cosplayer to represent each of the 3 streams... Stay for Anime/Manga, Karum for VK and.. someone else for Budaixi. (Off topic but they mentioned on TV what Stay does as an occupation, apparently she's a freelance(?) writer)

I wonder what Budaixi is like? I've never watched one before because I don't think they have it in Cantonese entertainment X.X

i had a jrock photoshoot with my friends today. xD although i'm not really cosplaying anyone. ^^;; here's one of the pictures. These are just face shots of the makeup... i had pink eyeshadow and black eyeliner on.. but the pink is barely visible.. TT^TT.. the outfits really can't be seen in these i just realized.. lol i'll post the outfits that i wore that day along with my friends. haha one of my friends cosplayed Kanon from an cafe. it was so kick ass! lol

p.s. it's my own translation but i'm not an expert in chinese so pardon my translation if it sounds weird.



紅茶：近年來大家都在關注你cos總集的情況，但為什麼突然宣布暫停出版呢？

Hong Cha: These few recent years, many people are getting interested in your cosplay collection book that you're going to publish, but why suddenly, did you decide to temporarily stop?

黃山：我希望可以建立更多的形象後才考慮推出。所以，誰也不能阻止我......

Huang Shan: Well, I has hoping to develop more and better image before I publish them (??? Sorry, my translation is bad =X ). So, noone can stop me....

紅茶：黃山殿說最後一句話時我發現世界變得很璀璨！你的cos每套都超級華麗！

Hong Cha: Last time, Huang Shan Dian (<< I duno wat’s the meaning of this) said that “ I found out that the world is getting brighter.” Your cosplay costumes are gorgeous!

黃山：這三年來確實花了好多功夫。由於自己是美院(註一)的學生吧，再加上又是個完美主義者，所以每次的cos我都視其為美術作品去完成，完全敗給了自己的角色執念。

Huang Shan: These three years, I’ve truly spent an enormous effort. Furthermore, I’m a perfectionist so I expect the best result. (not really sure though..)

紅茶：許多男生都覺得把厚厚的粉撲在臉上很彆扭呢。

Hong Cha : Many boys feel that using thick make up on the face is awkward.

黃山：我小時候的理想是當演員，自己也很喜歡視覺系，才不會對化妝抗拒。在我第一次化妝時，也是跟一群意趣相投的朋友一起，自然也不會覺得彆扭。

Huang Shan: When I was young, I always wanted to be a performer. I, myself, am very conscious about my physical appearance (vain), so I dun reject in applying make up. When I put on make up for the very first time, I was together with people of the same interest with me, so naturally, I dun feel awkward and uncomfortable.

紅茶：這麼說朋友對你的影響很大了，而朋友於你，又是怎樣的存在呢？

Hong Cha: So, I believe that your friend influenced you a lot. In your own opinion, what’s their existence means to you?

黃山：我非常依賴朋友，同時我不喜與人常往來。假日都會清靜地過，可能我的人格比較分裂......我最重要的幾個朋友是時間所提煉出來的，他們經常不在我身邊，也很少聚集，但會經常想起他們。

Huang Shan: I often rely on my friends. At the same time, I dun socialize a lot. For example, I try to not be involved with them and just be quiet about it. I guess it’s just my personality. Even those friends who are important to me don’t really spent a lot of time with me, we rarely gather together. But even so, I would frequently think of them.

紅茶：黃山給我的印象是個很執著於完美的人，你認為呢？

Hong Cha : I see you as an outstanding person. What do you think of it?

黃山：我是個比較愛幻想的神經質，是個內部屬分裂狀態的人。有時我覺得自己很自卑，各方面幾乎都很糟糕。很情緒化，應該是比較感性。

Huang Shan: I’m a dreamy and an introvert person. Some times, I feel inferior of myself. All in all, it’s pretty messed up. Very emotional and perceptual as well.

紅茶：不至於情緒化到砸東西吧？

Hong Cha: Would you break things when you’re so emotional?

黃山：會的！所以我會選擇便宜的東西。最凶的那次是順手砸了翡翠(......)，但我不喜歡把自己的情緒影響到其他人，所以外表看起來非常平靜。

Huang Shan: I would! That’s why I often buy cheap things. I broke a jadeite before. But I dun like people to see this side of me that’s why I often look calm when I’m at outside.

紅茶：對於cosplay，黃山殿有沒有自己獨特的見解和方式？

Hong Cha: Towards cosplay, do you have a special opinon and style?

黃山：我覺得cos要源於原作，但高於原作。也正因為這樣我被鐵杆(註二)唾棄過呢。大家都有自己的立場和見解，但我堅持我的再創造。我一邊堅持自己的審美觀點，一邊質疑自己這種再創造是否破壞了角色原來的味道，或者，我的演繹破壞了角色原來的感覺。但又覺得這是我的作品，我的設計，我的理念，當然希望自己的東西更純粹，於是又堅持了下來。我相信喜歡我cos的人也喜歡這種風格，有時候"任性"才能保住自己啊！

Huang Shan: I feel that cosplaying needs high originality. And because of this, I cast aside myself to produce an original result. Everyone has their own opinion and stand, but I uphold my own creation. As well as I appreaciate my own work, I would think of whether my own work would alter/destroy the original image OR my deduction destroy the feeling of the original image. But of course, what I made, what I created was all my own idea. And I hope that my work could be more pure (??) so I keep persisting. I believe that those people who likes my work thinks alike. Sometimes, you need strong will to protect yourself.

紅茶：你特別喜歡的是什麼風格？

Hong Cha: What’s your favourite style?

黃山：我對東方華美情有獨鍾的。只要去感受下中國文化對周遭文化的影響就能體會出，那時候我們為什麼被稱為"天朝"。我在cos中也融合了這種華美的元素，甚至幻想把cos作得像電影一樣，但因為缺乏資金，太不現實。

Huang Shan: I’m more into eastern style. (duno how to explain the rest in English.)

紅茶：那麼對於未來的cos，黃山有什麼計畫呢？

Hong Cha: So, in the future, what kind of idea your cosplay would be?

黃山：繼續堅持自己的事情，多多求變，作不一樣的華麗風格或者說突破這種華麗。

When I was little I wanted to be an actor and personally I like Visual Kei hence I do not object to makeup. The first time I put on makeup was with a bunch of like-minded friends so it didn't feel awkward at all.

I'm sorry. I didn't see the rule in the first post that said "please do not voice your opinions on the costumes." Simple costume or not, (s)he simply doesn't have the face for it. Maybe it's just the excessive eyeliner that bothers me but I see no resemblence to the original character other than the clothes. Cosplay something else.

Of course you didn't see it, coz there's none.

If you look at all the cosplayers in this thread, you'll know not all can rexactly esemble the character/person that they're cosplaying. But if their costume is accurate, I don't have any problem with that.

Anyways, even though Im not concerned in this whole "rating the cosplays" thing, I really cant stop the urge to voice out my opinion.

I think that its really inappropriate to rate the cosplayers. Whether its the extravagant ones or those that are very simple. Ive tried to cosplay and I must say that it really isnt easy.

1. You think of your costume. You make it or buy (still costs money).
2. The guts to to face people and whatever critiscm they may have.

So yea, I think every cosplay deserves a 10. Its the effort and heart that these people put into what they do that really counts.

Remember, they cosplay for fun and not for the ratings.

最后要强调一点，Cosplayer 是因为自己喜爱一个角色的而 Cosplay 的。Cosplay 是一种自娱的兴趣，并不是为了表演给别人看，也不是为了给别人拍照的。即使穿上一些角色的服装，但其动机是 “只为了给别人拍照” 的话，那就是 Model 而不是 Cosplayer了。

Lastly, there is a need to emphasize this point, Cosplayers cosplay because of their love for a character. Cosplay is a type of hobby/interest/enjoyment, it's main purpose is not for others to see or take pictures of. Therefore, if one merely puts on a costume just for others to take pictures of, that is a Model and not a Cosplayer anymore.


也请别批评 Cosplayer 的相貌。 Cosplay 是一项自娱的兴趣，而不是用来表演给别人看的，所以无须取得别人认同。

And please do not criticize the Cosplayer's looks. Cosplay is a hobby/interest/enjoyment, and it is not used to act/perform in front of others, so it does not need other's acceptance/assurance.




Regardless, there are still slight differences in opinions. I know some cosplayers will refuse to cosplay characters that they can't look one bit like/pull-off, even if they love that character.

Lastly, many of the articles/cosplayers emphasize the point of not reposting cosplayers pictures/taking pictures off their site and reposting. but yeah...
