No bashing, No hating and No "preaching" about all that health stuff. This is for those who smoke or used to.
So, which brand do you smoke and why? Is it because of the price? The taste? you know, etc.

Used to smoke marlboro reds, about a pack ever 1-3 days. Now I don't smoke cigarettes as much but I do occasionally smoke a hookah.

When I do smoke (which is rare; usually I need to have some other drug already on board to derive pleasure from smoking), I like to smoke Djarum kreteks - the ones with the black paper. They taste good, they burn slowly, and they crackle when you take a drag.

funny. i used to smoke marlboro lights menthol and wanted to try djarum blacks (after all, djarum is an indonesian brand) but never had the chance to. i smoked marlboros cos it was the easiest to get. everywhere you go there's marlboros. now i don't smoke since the school i attend won't allow it.
another brand i really like is mild seven (and its variant, seven stars) but it's pretty hard to get since i don't live in japan and all.

this is such a sad thread...
can you smokers please explain why you started smoking in the first place, and why you continue to smoke?
i've seen a lot of people on soompi say that started smoking, drinking, doing drugs, etc because their friends did it; but are you all really so easily pushed by peer pressure?
i can understand wanting to do various things with a friend you really like, but, really, i wouldn't jump off of a bridge just because my friend wants to.
i've also heard people say they do it to deal with stress, but that seems like a weak excuse to me too.
i can understand wanting to see what it's like to smoke, but i don't think that people need to act on that impulse. i wonder what it's like to lose a limb or die, but i'm not going to actually try and do it...

hmmm...you want an explanation?
i'm not afraid to admit that i started smoking because i thought it was the cool thing to do(can you really blame me? i was a dumb 12 year old boy). plus some of my older siblings were smokers who smoked in the house before i even started smoking. why do i continue to smoke? because i'm addicted to this drug called nicotine that is more addictive than heroin(at least that's what they say).
the 'deal with stress' thing is merely a cheap excuse that a lot of smokers use. not that it doesn't help you deal with stress, because it does...yet it's stressful when you dont have any cigs left and you need one. ironic that the thing used to deal with stress now gives you stress

smoking, after a while becomes a habitual thing. i find myself smoking even when my body doesn't give me any signals telling me that it needs nicotine. smoke when i drive, smoke after a meal, smoke after waking up, smoke before bed, smoke at break when i'm working, smoke when i'm out drinking with friends.
i've been on both sides of the fence, for about a year and half i had actually managed to quit smoking. after i started again though, i notice that i'm smoking more nowadays than i did before i quit. i really wish i had the will power to quit cold-turkey like that again.
my advice for anyone who's quit or is planning on quitting.
"just stop smoking, if you can survive a day without a cigarette; you can go for your entire life without it."
i honestly found the urge to fight my habits the most difficult; even more difficult than dealing with the cravings and depriving myself of the nicotine.

Started on Parliaments lights now i smoke Malboro lights.
I started smoking after a really bad break up with the ex. I just wanted to smoke, guess it was my way of dealing with it. Was it the best way? probably not, but it's the same thing as someone else drinking to deal with a problem, or working out or whatever other method is used. Now it's more of a social thing. When i'm on a job and a friend wants to have a cig i'll go with them and have a smoke. Not too often though.

this is something i find fascinating about people in general.
i've never had a desire to be the same as someone else, so trying to copy others is not something i really do/did.
at what age would you expect someone to stop "being dumb"?
one thing my mom's friend did to quit (back in the early 90s) was to hold a plastic cig and "smoke" it.
just doing the motions of smoking helped her to cut back. i think she figured that she needed something in her hands, and that just holding that plastic thing was helping her a lot.

Started a year ago because of LA stress (work + school + stupid people). Most people out here aren't smokers, so it wasn't because of social pressure.
I started with Marlboro 27s, quit for about 10 months (interestingly enough, I didn't smoke cigarettes in Korea- trust me, that's a feat), and recently started again with Camel No. 9s and Marboro Lights. I love the taste. I just love smoking, I guess.
It's obviously horrible for me. I'm pre-med, and if I didn't know my own hypocrisy, I would have failed out of school years ago. I go through about 2 or 3 cigs a day, usually for um... bathroom purposes and falling asleep at night. Ha.

used to smoke kent deluxe lights - they changed their name to kent blue a couple years later, and a couple years after that they changed their name to kent futura. i liked them because they were the smoothest cigarette that were still reasonably strong.
i haven't been a smoker for years but i still sometimes get cravings and buy a pack - it's an excuse to take some time out by yourself in a public place, it just doesn't feel right to sit down in a busy area and not do anything

For me it WAS stress.
It wasn't peer pressure. I started smoking in high school when I was applying to colleges. Nobody else around me smoked at all.
In college, I was the usually the only person who smoked. I found that I smoked a lot more in college. Instead of working in my room, I'd go someplace and smoke while I studied. Everyone told me to quit. I told them to mind their own business. Still smoke now that I'm working, but for some reason my life isn't as stressful now and I only smoke occasionally...takes me a week to go through a pack whereas before I'd smoke up to a pack a day (usually a pack every 2-3 days, though).

I started smoking in 05, when my then-girlfriend and bestfriend for 10+ years left me for another person, while I was in Iraq, without any advanced notice. It was also the same week that I just survived a massive attack of around 80-90 mortars/rockets, a VBIED, IED, and some small arms fire. I had a huge surge of adrenaline, lack of sleep, and I started stressing out way too much, I missed home, and missed my parents. I picked it up, ultimately relieving stress.
Why do I continue? Since I used smoking intially to relieve stress, it's become instictively the way my body gets rid of it now. Whenever I get really frustrated or stressed out, I smoke a cigarette. In reality, the only reason I'm becoming relaxed is because of the deep inhalation/slow exhale I'm conciously doing, but the fact I only do this breathing pattern when I'm smoking is what the body is fixated on. Smoking has become synounomus with stress relief.

^^you should try reading the first post

But before you jump on my arse, No, I wasn't peer-pressured into smoking because of its "coolness". Actually, all my friends have a stance like yours against tobacco. I'm the black sheep out of the group; and yes, I do try to respect their wishes for clean air, and other people's wishes. Most of the time, and probably due to a lot of scrutiny, I don't smoke in public but in the private vicinity of my car or my backyard. So why did I pick up smoking? Well, I was just going to try a puff or two, but it turned out that I had a real talent for smoking

- didn't even cough on my first puff.
Prefer brand: Mild Seven
But because I live in the States and its difficult to get my hands on that, I have to stick with Marlboro Lights. There's a smoothness to Mild Seven that Marlboro lacks but oh well~ I started with Newports and Marlboro Menthol Lights though. (Both leave unpleasant tastes.)

i quit earlier on this year, went vegetarian, because i decided that i won't let myself be dependent on anything.
i feel better now. much better.
everytime i feel like having a cigarette, i punch myself in the nuts and run away to hide in a hole.

then i tried camel no. 9s and i actually like them! they're smooth and they have this... unique aftertaste that i don't hate.

it was Raison Red or something.

Here cigarettes are pretty cheap, compared to other states, so it doesn't matter for the price. where do you guys purchase your cigs?? i feel like paying 7.50 for a pack is way to much. online is definitely cheaper but does anyone do that here? i thought costco sold cigs but last time i went they werent there anymore.
i don't know why but i feel more ok buying cigarettes here for $7.50 than when i lived in singapore and had to shell out $20 every time i felt like having a cig. honestly, i rarely buy single packs. when i go home i just buy as many cartons as my luggage space would allow. or sometimes i get a couple of cartons in duty-free shops. when i run out of the home supply (which has happened only once) i buy more in cartons online.

my mom grew up in a dirt poor family, she had to sew clothes for her family, and when she was in high school with a part-time job, she had to give her mom her paycheck...which her mom would use on smokes and alcohol.
my mom had a very stressful life, even more than me, but she doesn't smoke.
i know other people who have come from harsh backgrounds and don't smoke.
and, i haven't said anything about your health, if you want to do something that's bad for your health, that's your choice.
i'm asking what it was that tipped people towards smoking rather than some other type of habit.
in a thread full of smokers, i think that it's a reasonable question.
because, as i said, there are people that are stressed that don't smoke. there are people who want to try smoking that don't.
what was it that made you want to try it? what was the appeal? etc.
don't backpedal. you clearly criticized us for wanting to do something equivalent to "sticking knives in [our] eyes", don't claim that you're not using health as your basis of judgment. the fact that your mom had a stressful life but chose to not smoke, to be honest, means jack. good for her for making the right choice, but you can't apply something that personal to everyone.
besides, you're hardly asking a question with statements like "your choice interferes with my personal life" and "stress shouldn't be a reason to start smoking". you've made up your mind to dislike smokers for our lifestyle and that's ok (well not really but whatever), but this thread is for smokers who want to discuss cigarettes. as i've mentioned before, feel free to start another thread to condemn smokers and leave us be.

i have a really sad story about smoking...
so...every brand that i've ever started to really enjoy has gotten discontinued. if anyone has ever heard of the moonlight tobacco company, they made honey toasted cigarettes. i smoked those for about 1.5 years when they got discontinued
then i smoked luckystrike lights...which...if anyone knows, RUUUUUUUUUUULE but they also got discontinued after about 2 years
now i smoke camel special lights when i'm broke, or otherwise dunhills. but...a normal pack is $5 and the imports that i smoke are $7

and i read somewhere that someone smoked dumarier? i loved those.
but almost everyone smokes marlboro? really? gross. for those of you who smoke marlboro, when you feel dizzy and nauseated right after smoking a marlboro, it's because their quality control blows. why? marlboro? if you've heard of cigarettes, you've heard of marlboro, right? so when they're sorting, quite a bit of impurity goes into it, like ditch weed, etc. which is making you dizzy and sick.
i'm not saying this because i hate this company or anything like that, i used to smoke marlboros, but...other brands taste better and have a good quality control.
if you want the flavor of a marlboro without the sick, i'd recommend parliament.
