So, for all you guys iTouch user, have any of you guys jailbreak it?
Tell me your experience here.. smile.gif

I'm thinking of jailbreaking my iTouch soon.. maybe next week or so.. ^^
`amy
uhm what exactly is jailbreaking ?
apparition
ive done the 1.1.1 instant jailbreak. it was really easy, i was supprised at how quick it was. after i jailbroke to 1.1.1, i jailbroke to 1.1.2 after that and you can use the installer app to install any program you want (including the iphone apps like mail/maps/etc).

its safe too, because even if you fail somehow, you can always do a force restore on the ipod and in itunes.

i recommend it for all wink.gif

Google is everyone's friend! happy.gif

Jailbreaking, in short, is hacking the Touch/iPhone. Google for more info or youtube it. There are A LOT of info/videos about it.

I think there's an hacked version already for the newest firmware. Obviously, I don't know since I don't use one, but I think I read it somewhere on Engadget. You could always bookmark a iPod Touch fansite and get the newest info from them.
apparition
ya, as dkyang mentioned, theres a jailbreak for 1.1.2. thats the version i have.

if you wanna update to it, you gotta restore back to 1.1.1, goto jailbreakme.com on the ipod to jailbreak, then oktoprep, then upgrade to 1.1.2 then touchfree jailbreak. THEN you have 1.1.2.

if you open multiple tabs, say you're view 1 tab, and theres 3 others in the background, safari caches only the tab you're looking at. so if you goto the other tabs, it reloads the entire pages over...which is sorta a pain...

it gets a lil slow with some large pages or pdfs...but hey, thats not the MAIN reason you'd consider a iphone/ipod touch right? tongue.gif

haha I use my pocket pc (Axim x50v) like a computer I have my PDF views and all that fun stuff in it. And the biggest limitation I run into is the anti-multitasking design of the Windows Mobile OS and my 64mb worth of ram (32 free).

blink.gif so maybe its not as perfect of a browsing experience that I had imagined. I know page render speed = king but hrm crashable.

do you guys need to reformat the itouch before you jailbreak it??

nope. BUT if you updated to 1.1.2, you need to downgrade (force restore to 1.1.1), which involves a "formatting".

what kinda cool apps can you install onto the ipod touch?

Go up.. the link http://www.ipodtouchfans.com those people will be able to better guide you through the process.

Generally you just add sources to the Installer program and just go at it and install anything interesting.

Why am I above their post? blink.gif

Okay
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/10/29/instant-jai...and-ipod-touch/
Says do that basic stuff to jailbreak. "In order for SSH to work, you must download BSD subsystem, Community Sources, and Open SSH, which can all be found under 'System' in the installer app." so do that and I think once community sources is added you're good to go.

If its not listed ApolloIM and theres a MobileChat you can add the sources for and install from that.

Old ideas vs newest versions of the hack thats streamlined. I think they do the same thing except they just made it automatic.

does 1.1.1 still have the "installer app"?

You need 1.1.1 to do the exploit, then install the upgrade program, then installt he 1.1.2 otherwise you can't hack it and it wont be able to install anything.

hmm... well if you add the "community sources" installer.app source, you will get a section in installer called "Dictionaries" where you can download really good english dictionaries.

weiphone source (add: http://app.weiphone.com/installer) has good english-chinese, chinese-eng dictionaries.

havent found a source for other dictionaries, so you'll hafta add it on your own if you're learning another language/want another language in there. that site you mentioned tells you how to do it. basically, you goto stardict's official dictionary section and download any dictionary of your choice. they come in tarballs, and are formatted for stardict. so you gotta extract it for wedict.
  1. grab a dictionary, say...quick korean dict.tar.bz2
  2. extract the whole thing using winzip or 7zip or whatever. (i noticed winrar had trouble during step#3...so i had to use 7zip)
  3. extract the quick_english-korean.dict.dz file to get the quick_english-korean.dict file
  4. SFTP (or use AFP or other programs) the .dict and .idx files to /private/var/root/Library/weDict/ (make sure the .dict .idx files have the same name...in this case quick_english-korean.dict AND quick_english-korean.idx --> i noticed that 7zip named them something weird on 2nd extract)
  5. load up wedict on your iphone/ipodtouch and select the new dictionary to use!

if you're wondering how to use it...its pretty easy. just click on weDict on your springboard, click on the i button, check the dictionaries you want to search through, then press DONE, then click on the magnifying glass icon to bring up the keyboard to type the word you wanna search for!

useful app laugh.gif

webapps are free. you just browse them with the safari app. yeah...most of those webapps are sorta gimmicky..

and yes, just punch in jivetalk's address (http://iphone.beejive.com) into safari and you can use it, even without jailbreak.

what's BSD, SHH, and oktoprep? not sure what they are....but most guides say it's necessary to install them.
i thought the last step was go to jailbreakme.com, install "installer", and then you're done.....but seems like i was wrong.
so yeah, don't follow this guide:
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/10/29/instant-jai...and-ipod-touch/
there are more steps you need to do after installing the "installer" from jailbreakme.com, which they didn't say wacko.gif

i thought ppl said the process will be really quick.
seems like it would take at least 20-30 minutes to go through the jailbreaking process (downgrade to 1.1.1 --> jailbreak --> prepare 1.1.1 for 1.1.2 update by doing the oktoprep thing? --> update to 1.1.2 --> jailbreak again)
and there are so many guides. each guide tells you a different way of jailbreaking.....so confusing

i need to do more research on this before jailbreaking my ipod.
Jay Chou
well it seems that apple is releasing a SDK that supports 3rd-party applications next month.
guess i'll just wait for that instead of jailbreaking and voiding my warranty

BSD = basic programs they need for installing things, like linux tools.
SSH = think dos that lets you remotely control the ipod.
OKtoprep = you downgrade your ipod to 1.1.1 > Jailbreak it > Install OKtoPrep so you can upgrade to 1.1.2 and jailbreak. The OKtoPrep basically puts in some hacks so that when you upgrade it to 1.1.2 there will be a opening for your computer to be able to downgrade it. 1.1.2 fills in all the security holes so you can't jailbreak it.

Yeah it will take a while if you want to go back up to 1.1.2 the actual hack to go to the site is fast. 30 minutes is a good estimate if you have everything on your computer already.

Jailbreaking doesn't really void your warranty. Most computers out there say your warranty is void if you change the operating system... its next to impossible to kill a ipod touch, crash it really bad? Start recovery mode, do a restore to 1.1.1 (and loose everything you did) then start over.

You can't jailbreak 1.1.3 yet. Most likely it will take a few weeks before they will be able to come up with a OKtoPrep program to let you upgrade to 1.1.3 jailbreak friendly.

Im not holding my breath for the SDK.
Did you see? Apple said if you want Google Map + Mail they charge you $20 for that upgrade otherwise you can use the 1.1.3 without those tools. I don't know about you, but it looks like they want to charge for those programs and even with the SDK, I doubt many will remain free. Im thinking there will be itunes like buy a program for $6 to load it in. crazy.gif

i would like to know that too. so i googled around and made a list:
QUOTE
ipod touch firmware 1.1.3 changes <-- it would be nice if someone can verify the things on my list!
  • two-finger touch typing with the virtual keyboard. Basically now you don’t have to lift your finger to type another letter. You can type one letter with one finger, keep your finger on the first letter, and type another letter with your other finger. This gives you the ability to use the Shift key like you do on a regular keyboard. Typing should also be easier with two hands, which should please ex blackberry users.
  • Addition of Mail, Stocks, Notes, Weather and Maps apps ***for $20
  • Google Maps: Hybrid map view (wasnt in the iphone 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 versions i used)
  • Mail: Gmail IMAP part of default setup now
  • Drag and Drop application icons on the home screen. Press and hold the icons until they start to wiggle. Now you can drag the icons around, even in and out of the dock or to a new page.
  • Pagination capability, so you can now have more than 16 application icons on the home screen with up to 9 pages.
  • Add any website bookmark to the home screen with an icon.
  • Lyrics feature
  • Web Clips for Bookmarks on the Home Screen
  • ...plus a few other features for iPhones only (multi-recipient SMS, faux-GPS in google maps, etc)

Sources: lifehacker, appsafari -- google around for more info

seems like a nice upgrade; more significant than the 1.1.1 to 1.1.2 upgrade (which only added the ability to add calendar notes). im not sure if i want to lose my jailbroken apps though and pay $20 for the apps i already have (even though they're officially illegal now?) i think after the jailbreak is made for 1.1.3, 3rd party devs will hafta update their apps for 1.1.3, which seems like a pain, but it will probably be worth it eventually tongue.gif

yes.

theres a 1.1.2 firmware floating around the net (called: iPod1,1_1.1.2_3B48b_Restore.ipsw). so grab that. so restore to 1.1.1 if you dont already have that version (yes, theres a 1.1.1 firmware around still too called iPod1,1_1.1.1_3A110a_Restore.ipsw) then jailbreak by going to jailbreakme.com in safari. then oktoprep 1.1.2. then manually upgrade the firmware with itunes. then use touchfree to jailbreak 1.1.2. either itunes 7.5, 7.6 should work fine.

and well, the only difference in 1.1.2 compared to 1.1.1 is the addition of the calendar fix (at least from what i can see)..and even then, theres a 3rd party fix that fixes it for 1.1.1. so if you dont really need that feature, you could just wait and see what happens with the 1.1.3 jailbreak. i think this 1.1.3 seems pretty significant as i said in my last post.

and you probably should ask/look for further jailbreaking questions on a ipod touch forum... tongue.gif

today, i used apple's standard calc.app that's built into the ipod touch during class today, and it sux, since it cant do anything besides the basic operations. also, the more advanced calcs you download off installer are all in RPN! i am not familiar with RPN at all! there are webapps however, and this one webapp is quite nice, but you can only access it when you're online. so i took this, edited the source code to take out some of the ads and saved the files so now you can use this offline, since you dont always have a wifi hotspot near you. i've posted this here so you guys can take advantage of this too.

left=apple's calc.app; right=belfry's webapp ported offline by myself

requirements (to use this 'webapp' offline): jailbroken ipod touch or iphone, apache webserver, SSH (or someway of uploading to the filesystem)

Download it! then extract it, SSH this to your /Library/Webserver/Documents/ folder on your ipod, then browse to http://127.0.0.1/Belfry%20SciCalc.htm in safari!

okay i'm tired of the "."

if you have 113 you downgrade to 111 and jailbreak/upgrade/unlock to 112. Well this is for the iPhone, i'm a bit unclear what to do with iTouches.
