so do u actually take ur time to concentrate on a song sometimes? as in listening to the instrumentals, beat etc as well as the singing.. most ppl tend to just sit there and "hear" music. well i guess it depends on the song.. i dont like how most songs these days have repeating intrumentals done by computers... it really gets annoying after awhile. thats one reason i stick to classic rock/rock. im not saying one genre of music is better than another... but i do appreciate music that is actually manually played over computer genrated ones. (nvm my d12 banner in my sig btw haha)

Hmm . . . good question. There are times when I'm just hearing the music because I'm doing other things at the same time. But, I do really listen to the lyrics, the beat, the melody - the way it is composed when I'm intentionally listening to it and not doing other things. So, I guess it's 50/50 for me : )
ooo_it's_mE
most of the times I just hear it.
but sometimes I like to take the time out to "listen" to it.
singerchick
I just hear it.

Many of the times when I actually listen to the lyrics, even if I liked the tune, if I take the time to analyze the lyrics I find out how pointless the song is.

I do it sometimes. Sometimes if a song intrigues me enough, I listen for the background vocals, the words, the instruments, etc. But usually I don't have the time or patience to do that =P

I do listen to music. But then again I am always listenin to music. It helps each mood I am in. I have music at home, in the car, work, pretty much everywhere. And I love getting lost in the music, ive been like that since I was young. I've been listening more to artists like Susie Suh, Shivaree, etc cuz Im tired of generic beats and music

A lot of people just "hear" music because they're usually only turning music on as background noise for multi-tasking. Like having music on while talking on AIM, for instance.

So when I'm multitasking (music + watercolors, music + photoshop, or music + coding) I'm only "hearing" the music.
When I download new songs or buy a new CD though I always listen to it first. Otherwise you don't really know if you LIKE the song or not, do you? ~_~ Over the summer, I used to swing in the hammock in my dormitory courtyard and just listen to The Shins over and over again though. <3 good stuff.
Remember Me
When I hear a song for the first time, I pay attention to the lyrics especially, and then the other components. Afterwards, I just 'listen' to the music when I'm doing something else.
hydest
i listen to the music but iunno what the lyrics mean >< ahh..i do like the vocal, instrumentals,...etc...just the languages that i don't understand.. but wait! someone said music is international language, isn't it??? ^^
*frutti
It depends on what I'm doing; if I'm multi-tasking, like what someone above said, i'll just "hear" it...if I'm sitting in the car listening to my iPod i'll pay attention to it, since there's not much else to concetrate on. The majority of my songs are korean and chinese...I understand chinese lyrics but not korean ones all that well. The Chinese songs that I listen to don't contain much profanity at all, whereas the English songs that are popular nowadays contain sooo much. This is one of the reasons why I don't really listen to popular English songs...the lyrics are all pretty dirty. As for Korean songs, I like listening to some of the funny English in the songs sometimes =] But for me to enjoy a song, I'll have to like the music and beat as well though, and not just the lyrics. There are two different types of people...music people and lyric people. I think most people are music people though, much like myself.
xswtsincerityx
i usually just hear it
if i really really like a song then i would take time to listen to it
badmammajamma
"do you listen to music or just skim through it?" - jay-z

your title just reminded me of that quote hah

but to answer your question... it depends on the song and artist. if its an artist that i KNOW has messages and real content in their lyrics, then yeah i listen actively.
[[Fallen--Star]]
Hm, I actually pay attention to the lyrics and can feel what the song is about and ect. As in Candy Shop XD I usually stop what i'm doing to sing along and pay attention to the lyrics =]
VersusVillain
I listen to all songs I like. To me, there's no point in liking a song if I just "hear" it. There would be no meaning to it, and I may as well be listening to any other crap like DBSG or something.
ichigo_no_powder
lol rarely. I'listen' to it when I'm hearing the song for the first time, to decide whether or not I should keep the song or when I'm extremely bored and I have no choice but to listen to the song. but most of the time, I only hear it
starbrite
That's is a very good question, indeed. I like to listen to the lyrics of a song. There is always a story to tell in a the lyrics and it gets me interested. And mouthing the song is another hint that your actually listen to it. Then there comes multi-tasking which may distract you from actually listening to the music itself. All in all I"m a lyric person.
Dachink
listening to music like me would make you broke every week sleep.gif
Sky's Crying
I "hear" music when I'm doing homework and when I'm driving. I only really listen to the actual music when I'm sitting on my bed or in the passenger seat.
rockerbabe
Sometimes I do for english and korean songs if I'm really interested in that songs
alicee
Yeah, I listen to music. I have to turn it off when I'm doing homework or something else though because I always pay attention to every song I listen to. I feel retarded sometimes because I cry when I listen to sad songs and my sister looks at me weird -.-;; But it depends if I like the song or not really o__o If I'm really concentrating on something (like I'm working in PS) then I usually just "hear" the music.
sky.xo
I listen to it.
But if I'm feeling mindless or I'm busy, it's just a noise in the background.
moonie_heejunnie
i 'hear' it most of the time. like now. lol. but if i'm listening to music on my mp3 player i 'listen' to it more, obviously.
elizabeth
I listen to the beat, rythem, and of course the lyrics but most of the time I just sit and listen to the music and not the lyrics.
Steph*
Mm...sometimes.

If I really like a song, I'll look up the lyrics and stuff.
Emyli
I don't listen or hear the music, i feel it!!
KIM_SAYS:
Yeah, I listen to it. It's kinda funny. The most I actually listen to it is when I'm doing homework. It's when I can really hear it.

Romancer.
Listen. Sometimes I get so caught up in the instrumentals that I unconsciously forget the singing.
kwyet
most of the time i'll listen to the lyrics
destinyxforever
i listen to the instruments, beats, lyrics. But if I hear a new song I see if the music is good first. Then If I like it take my time to listen to everything.
amour always
yea, most of the time i do try to listen to the lyrics as well as the instrumental music. I also try to distinguish the different types of instruments.
Q206
I listen to the lyrics most of the time.
akirasberry

tengteng
I do listen to music when I'm am soley concentratig on it,but when I doing my other stuff,I usually hear it more.
sherry
i usually listen to it

i hear it when the song is new to see if i like it..or if it's really boring
bloopy_babo
i sometimes actually listen to music. well when it comes to rap, i dont wanna listen i just wanna get down and dirty to it but it is truely disgusting and stupid lyrics sometimes. but lots of bumping beats.

but i do listen to lyrics and the sound. i find that i really like bands that use a lot of bass guitar.
sweet_dreamz
i listen to the music..
buh if i love it i listen to it
webby
I listen+hear music. I guess it all depends on the piece. If the instrumentals/accompaniment are striking enough and stands out, I'd listen to it. It all depends on how good they are smile.gif.
cerealmoo
ofcourse LISTEN! lol with my earphones
jenn
usually i take more time to listen to music with piano/instrumental melodies rather than music that just want to make you jump up and dance.
Iridescence
I tend to do both. I like to listen to music and just let the music flow into me. I have this deep appreciation for music, that to me.. it feels wrong to overlook all the aspects that the artists have worked so hard into doing the song.

Then again there are some that don't put as much effort as some artists.
jeehyun.kim
i listen to the lyrics.. cause i know how much music can influence you.. and if the song is just plain 'bad' then i won't listen
bad meaning.. slutty'i wanna have sex w/ you..' er i wanna kill you kinda songs...
to me.. thats bad(:

i listen to the vocals too.. even if the song sounds corny.. if they have i nice voice.. i <3 it(: keke
Dimby
Sometimes it depends on the song.
hands_open

RYUUSEi
Before, I used to just listen to the lyrics. But ever since my Music classes in school, I've started noticing the beat and stuff ^^;
soliitude
i listen to the lyrics of the song for the first time. (i get annoyed when i don't know what they're saying..) then i gradually just "hear" the song..
Thao
95% of the time I do not listen to lyrics.

i've "listened" to about 3 songs in my lifetime . i'm usually not so enamoured with a song that i want to know everything about it . but sometimes i want to hear everything about it <3

but that doesn't necessarily just apply to old school non-computerised music . i really love electro (not dance) music , and i think it's just as musical as more "original" music styles
