how's it like?
housing?
classes?
campus?
i hear stockton has a high crime rate. how's it like living there? anything recreational to do around the area? supermarkets? places to eat?
i might be attending UOP in the near future for its pharmacy program so I just wanted to know what it was like. Thanks, in advance!

LOL I just come into this forum and I see my college as the first topic. I attend UOP as a current sophomore. and am a pre-pharmacy major. I'm going to pharm school next year.
I enjoy this small campus. I lived in honors dorm freshman year and loved it because all my friends and next year roommates are from my dorm. We were a close knit group of friends. The food is going to be improved greatly because they are going to switch to points system. Ask your UCSD friends, they'll know. The campus is great, all the classes are pretty close unlike a big school.
Don't worry about the crime rate. It's only scary outside of the campus. I've never experienced anything bad.
I have to tell you this. UOP science is very difficult. Don't expect an easy high GPA. The min req. math/science gpa is 2.70. You may think that's easy... heck no. I have know countless people having to take an extra year because they couldn't keep up with the grades. UOP is not a cheap school... costing like 30-40k a year. And pharm school is even more.
But if you are willing to take the challenge, go for it! I did

Hello again
Although I haven't been there for college (im definitely going to go in the fall for pre-pharm) I've stayed in the dorms 3-4 times before because of different summer programs and camps and relatives of mine have gone there and all of them have really enjoyed it. Although it's not like living in So-Cal or SF for college it's really what you make of it. The campus was really pretty and the community is small enough where you know a lot of the people. Also it's not too far away from the bay area if you want to go do something on the weekends. And like the poster above me said, it's not that bad if you stay in the campus district. From my stays there I really enjoyed everything about UOP. The dorm rooms weren't that great actually but once you are in the pharm d program you get to stay in the nicer "condo" type dorms which are pretty darn nice. One thing I'm scared about however is the work load... too many science-math classes

but... hey you get done quicker!

so.. stay on campus. outside = scary. -____-
lol.
i like math and science. yay. lol.
how are the dorms like? big? small? bathrooms? are there any stoves or something you can use to cook?
kuku
Mar 19 2008, 12:54 AM
lol the dorm sizes are of a very typical size. I think mines like 12 feet by 12 feet. Some have carpets while some do not. There will never be kitchens for regular dorms. Never in a million years will that happen because the cost is just too much. You need junior standing to apply for the apartments with kitchens. I bunk my bed with my roommate so we have tons of space. Freshman dorms have a shared bathroom. In the quads, there are about 30 rooms per floor = 60 people of the same sex sharing a bathroom. Usually there's 3 showers and 5 stalls... more than enough. I have to say, there are some bathrooms without stall doors, just the door that's makes things fuzzy. If I lived in that dorm, I'd be afraid to shower. You usually have to trust that no one's going to be a pervert and look into your stalls. But my dorm has shower curtains and doors, so it doesn't affect me.
Just go to the dining hall. In your freshman year, you probably don't want to spend too much time buying groceries and cooking especially when you are just starting to adjust. ANd I doubt your parents will let you bring a car up. The majority of the freshmans don't have cars.
AND
Be aware of freshman 15. It has turned very pretty girls to nightmares! lol I'm not kidding. One of my friends started to have a double chin after his 1st semester. Ways to avoid it: eat less food and hit the gym often. Look at the mirror! Baun fitness center is open, but not 24 hours though. I go there to work out often.

30-40K per year.. that's like.. double the UC

; but then again.. i guess it's sort of worth it cause you'll have less years of school to attend.. while people who goes to UCs have like.. 8ish years of school... and you can start earning money sooner... than other people..
f0reveralways
Mar 19 2008, 06:40 PM
hrmm. my parents will let me bring a car up. i dont live that far. but anyway, i feel like UOP is getting uglier and uglier in my eyes after reading your comments & online reviews of the college. :/
1) its expensive
2) dangerous city, restricted to life on campus basically :/
3) boring area (you have to drive elsewhere [tahoe, san fran] for recreation)
4) stuck with pharmacy even if my interests change
ahhh. life is stressful

Mar 19 2008, 06:58 PM
^yeah, that's the gist of it. i really don't recommend it unless you know you're gonna stay in pre-pharm for sure. once i quit pre-pharm, i saw no reason to be there and got the hell out.

Mar 20 2008, 01:14 AM
lol what are you talking about? I love my school to no end. I'm in a fraternity and it's one of the best decisions of my life.
I love UOP.
My roommate works for security on campus. It's the safest place to be. I've been out in Stockton a few times. It's not bad. I've never been in a situation where I have felt unsafe. If you live off campus or venture off to downtown Stockton, then it'd be iffy. Even then, my friend lives in a gated community off campus. Safe as heck.

UOP is a very specific school tailored to science, pre-law, or engineering majors. I was stuck on pharmacy since 9th grade, so this was the perfect school for me. It is far from home, so I won't be bothered by my parents, and it has a small school, so classes aren't too far away.

There are parts where it's ghetto, more like patchy ghetto but once u get further away from the school there are nice places. Every bar, restaurant, even the mall is within equi-distant of each other. Heck u can even walk from school to the mall or to Target no joke. Although I've never done that since I've had a car since freshmen year so I have no idea what's it like to walk...but from other ppl they say it's ok. Yeah the town is VERY boring...I don't live too far away from home so I go home every weekend since freshmen yr. Btw I'm a senior, currently.
Dorms vary by size from doubles, triples, & singles. They also vary by which dorm you're in. I lived in Jessie B for the first 2 yrs and then I moved off campus just 10 mins away to an apt w/ 2 other people. I mean, I haven't run into like bad people even though I live off campus cuz my neighborhood is kinda safe haha. Just don't go anywhere at night by yourself (kind of a duh thing). I've shopped and run errands by myself and so have my roommates and we're all fine. The campus is small...and if you're in the science major you have classes with those people for the next 4 yrs at that school depending on if you're a pre-wealth major (that's what all my profs say..pre-wealth haha) If you have a car especially now it's hard to find parking just b/c they're building the stupid University Center which is unnecessary since it wiped out almost part of a lot so parking is really hard to find, during the afternoon. It's even worse when the public holds events at school & during school hours and they take up all the parking spaces.
Um...tuition goes up 5% each year and has been going up. The sciences here are hard compared to other schools, they weed you out like crazy to weed out the incompetent ppl for upper division classes & for pharm & dent school. Since it's a small school, it's a small community. Ok campus. I don't know, UOP is lacking a lot. Not that fun of a campus & town...hence the reason why I go home a lot or go out to other places to have fun i.e. Sac or SJ. I've been to all the restaurants here in Stockton (the popular ones or ones I know)...they're average nothing spectacular.
Classes are weeder classes especially the pre-req gen bio & g.chem to take upper division classes. The crappy thing about UOP is that you have to take mentor or the now newly upgraded term is "pacific seminar". And if you're just a regular major besides those pre-wealth majors then as a senior you have to take "mentor 3". It's dumb, waste of time....I have no idea what the point of that class is. School is overly expensive, I recommend buying books online or through people. Bookstore rips you off. Some classes are ok and there are those professors that make the class worthwhile & they're funny too. I mean the school tries to help you w/ your classes but mostly it's study on your own, learn from others, and also your own.
There are other schools for pharmacy & pre-dent (if that's what you're going into)...if you don't want to spend the next couple years of your life in boring stockton @ an expensive school that makes everything hard for no reason I suggest you think long & hard about coming here. Overall I made some really good friends here & I have a few classes I like and the campus is small so it's ok too.

hey everyone
i'm in need of some advice
but first
congrats to u guys up there that got into the pharm program

i didnt get in =\
but i did get into uop itself
and they are putting my in an exploratory program
thing is i got into ucsd as well
and i checked out the campus the past few days and i thought it was average
so my question is
is it better to go to uop even though i didnt get the pre pharm
or should i got to ucsd for undergrad and go from there?
i know uop is more expensive but it seems like class size can be a huge advantage
at ucsd they have office hrs and stuff but i dont really know how much help you can get
but yea
advice would be greatly appreciated

^ ahh you got into UCSD but not UOP? wow. i'll trade you my UOP 3+3 prepharm admission for your UCSD admission. lol.
i say go to UCSD for undergrad. UOP specializes in pre-law, pre-dentistry, & pre-pharmacy. if you're not in any of those programs, i don't see any reason to go to UOP.
PS: there's some research that says class size doesn't really affect student grades.

^ ahh i'm still in the deciding process. if only UOP was in socal..
people i know tell me UOP is really boring. the only choices i'm considering are UCI & UOP, though

somebody help D:
reasons to go to UCI
- not stuck with pharmacy in case i don't like it
- friends going to UCI
- more things to do in/near Irvine
- Irvine is safer
- Irvine is cleaner
- Irvine is like my hometown
- friends going to UCLA & UCSD
- cheaper by ~$4k (i got a lot of financial aid for UOP)
ahh what else?
reasons to go to UOP
- pre-pharm advantage program
- closer to home? (i don't really mind this part though if i go to UCI since i'd be rooming with a friend)
- uhh. it's not
that expensive ..for undergrad (given that i maintain a 3.0 gpa)
...

gimme more reasons to attend UOP, please!
it's like a matter of what college do i
want to go to versus what college
should i go to.

oh man D:

lol The writing sample was easy as heck. I wrote horribly and my grammar made no sense at all. They just want to see that you CAN write.
Interview was a bit harder because some questions will come up and they want to see how eloquent you are with your words. It's only the GPA requirement that scares me the most.

Oh, I didn't see shoeguy24's post earlier. Yea, if you are under exploratory, I would advise against going to UOP for any science major. You thought the campus was average?! No way. I thought it was really pretty compared to UCLA. When you are driving you see Burns tower from miles away. My bro got the same letter as you, so he's not going. Aww... I hope you end up liking it. I've actually stayed at UOP a few times for camps during the summer and I thought it wasn't that bad. I'm sure if you try to meet people and get involved you might enjoy it.
I also heard that if you keep a 3.0+ GPA and you are from a pre-pharmacy advantage program you are practically guaranteed a spot in their pharmacy program so don't worry too much about the writing and interview.
I'm hoping to stay in an honors dorm... I heard they were slightly nicer than the regular dorms.

There's nothing much good about it except being on your resume. However, being in a dorm with a bunch of other people who are just as competitive as you are in your major really helped me in my opinion. If you live in Southwest(big freshman dorm), you'll basically have to live every Friday with loud music and drinking people all around you. Actually, every dorm is the same, but not as much in my dorm. If you do choose to live, John B is louder than Carter dorm... choose wisely haha.

If you live in Southwest(big freshman dorm), you'll basically have to live every Friday with loud music and drinking people all around you. Actually, every dorm is the same, but not as much in my dorm. If you do choose to live, John B is louder than Carter dorm... choose wisely haha.
bleh but next year there's going a lot of non-asian honors peers... which sucks I think.
eh? why for the lack of non-asian honors people next year?

I'm currently living in John B.
Next year I'll be living in Brookside, which is the apartments where the pharm kids live. It has 4 individual rooms, kitchen, and 2 bathrooms.
The lack of Asian honors peers is probably because we are doing squat to help out. Well, people are lazy in general. Also, there's a lot of segregation going on since it's usually the pre-dents or pharms who are Asians. I don't see a problem. The difference in majors alone is enough reason why this is happening.
I'm spending way too much time on Soompi. I have an o chem test this Friday to study for!!! wahhhh

I live in LA, the 5 hour drive isn't TOO bad. I can make it in 4.5 hours if I try.
Anyone coming for profile day? I'll be at my fraternity booth probably.
It's not worth the money to go to this school at such an outrageous price for 4 years.
I'm going to Profile day! Sat April 12th
Since I live in Stockton and applied for the College Involvement Program and without loans i am given $37,740 to attend.

Not including scholarships though.
Now I have to decide whether I want to live on campus or at home.
I received my Financial Aid Packet yesterday and it broke down the cost of University of the Pacific for me.
Academic Year 2008/2009 [Bachelor's & Pre-Professional]
Tuition: $30,230
Wellness Center: $240
Student Activity Fee: $200
McCaffrey Recreation Fee: $60
Tuition & Fees: $30,730*below expenses are all estimates*
Food & Housing: $10,185
Books $ Supplies: $1,566
Personal Expenses: $2,214
Transportation/Travel: $746
Total Costs: $45,451I had a question though, what is the Wellness Center, and McCaffrey Recreation?
Also is living on campus worth it? I heard it's super hard to make friends if you don't live on campus hearing from my cousin who lives at home.
Should I save money and live at home or pay around five thousand to live on campus.
My parents suggest I save money but it's up to my decision, then my cousin and friends tell me to live on campus.
Some Help Please?

does anyone know if u can get into the pharm program for undergrad if u just start as a regular undergrad ???
the website says this
Seven-Year (4+3) Bachelor’s/PharmD.
These pre-pharmacy applicants will be admitted into Pacific’s arts and sciences division (known as the "College of the Pacific") and will pursue a Bachelor of Science degree with a major from either the Department of Biological Sciences or the Department of Chemistry. If they complete their Bachelor’s degree in four years (but no more than five years) they will be eligible to "advance" into the PharmD. program as long as they have fulfilled all of the pre-pharmacy advantage requirements. This option will ensure that these students are "on track" from the beginning of their college careers to earn, at least, a Bachelor’s degree.
does that mean i can still make it in the 7 year?
I was just wondering if this option is open to me because i didn't get into the accelerated program but they put me in an exploratory program which means i'm undeclared. If i want to still attend pacific i have to let them know and enroll so yea. But anyway, does anyone know if this option is available to me?

^ i don't think so. i think you'll have to apply to their graduate school, instead, for pharmacy. i believe that's what
AzNdAyDrEaMeR is planning on doing. [see page 4 of the
UOP Notification Thread].
i could be wrong though.

i think you made a typo with transportation/travel. it's $7
56 if it matters. lol. but WOW.

you got so much $$
even
with loans & scholarships, i only get $37,539 D: oh man. i thought it was pretty good too

if i were you, i would live at home. after all, we're all in "pre-wealth" majors as
rocpinkslip mentioned. might as well save some money while you're at it.
if you want some friends, you can always be friends with us soompi-ers.. LOL.

WOW! How is UOP so expensive? That doesn't seem right. Housing is about 10k a year, books is way less. I can buy 1 semester's books for 2-300. Personal expenses and travel shouldn't really be thrown in. Then that's about 40k lol. I got a 10k scholarship, so I pay 30k a year.
Wellness center is the place you go to when you are sick. The school needs to pay for the nurses and stuff. McCaffrey recreation is the funding to the school for the events it holds and the events done at each individual dorms.
It's true that it's hard to make friends if you don't live on campus. All you do is come to class and go and that's it. You don't really get the opportunity to get to know your peers. I would live on campus at least the 1st year to meet friends.
_______________
Do you know why they accept 40/40/20? Because half the time the 2+3's will extend and the 3+3's will extend another year as well. They only accept 100-120 students a year into pharm school from the program. When people extend another year, it usually evens out.
_______________
Shoeguy, I'll be straightforward, you don't get the same advantage as those in the program. My brother got the same letter... exploratory. That means they don't even accept him as a bio major yet. In my opinion, it's not worth the time to go to such a hard school for a bio major and then risk getting shot down in 4 years.

ohhhh i guess a lot of people didn't get of money for financial aid? i remember that i only have to take out two loans or something...it definately wasn't as much as AzNdAyDrEaMeR :/
btw do we have to take placement tests before attending pacific? o___O i heard that from somewhere but i'm not so sure its true...

^ I don't think you have to take placement tests? They already accepted you, they shouldn't test you again.
DANG, you guys got crazy amounts of scholarships/loans, I got $10,000 u__u
Does anyone know if this amount is renewable? Or if there's any chance of getting other scholarships in the other years? Because I am, like a ton of other people, choosing between this and UCSD, and the main reason why I prefer SD is because UoP is so expensive x:
kuku
Apr 3 2008, 11:37 PM
umm I don't think so. I know some people did, but I never took any tests before school started.
Your scholarship is renewable for the amount of time in your undergrad it says. Mines 2 years since I'm 2+3. If I extend, I don't get it anymore. You have to maintain a 3.00 gpa.

haha you are right f0reveralways, it was
$756 xD
typos typos, but im pretty new at soompi. I hope I can make some friends, that would really be nice

other than my cousin who applied with me, I wouldn't know any other freshman on campus.
Thanks KUKU!!! that clears up a lot of things from the finance list. i'm still deciding on dormitories, whether to live on campus or not. what else should i consider before making my decision. May 1st is the deadline Living on campus for the first year is a tempting idea also, I might just do that KuKu. I want to decide by Sunday

Live on Campus:
- make friends
- dorm events
- conveniently close to classes
Live off Campus:
- save money and recieve money back from financial aid
- home sweet home?
Also my friend from UOP CIP program had asked me if I was going to the Awards thing for UOP on April 10 Thursday and April 11 on Friday leading up to Profile Day on Saturday April 12. She was going to ask about it for me but I was wonderring if anybody recieved a letter to attend an awards thingy on April 10~12. My friend told me everyone who got an acceptance letter should be able to go. I'm so excited about attending UOP but also a little scared about the workload.
