But some topics only require short answers??? Either don't respond to them OR post something constructive thats related to the topic at hand.

Example : Who likes apple pie? 500 people respond yes, no, maybe, etc. The purpose for such a topic? None; its useless UNLESS at least those who respond give a reason as to why they like it or don't like it. The point is, you can ALWAYS come up with something more than just a useless one word reply.

Starting from today, anyone violating the 20 character rule will be warned 20% for each offense.

(as a reminder... don't forget the signature rule violation announcement made last week as well.)

What do you mean by 'broken'?
Because I typed a short reply, without knowing how many characters it had and then an information thing popped up telling me that it was too short and then I went back and typed more.
I can't remember 'breaking' this 20 character rule though...

It's not hard to write out a thought out answer that's more than a sentence long. People who write short answers just want to get their post count up probably, not actually provide real opinions. If only there was a way to instantly weed out all the silly, ridiculous threads that people start sometimes (and that people reply to and continue).

The only time I think it's okay is in the selling & trading threads, when you whitelist or buyerlist someone, you don't always have comments about the transaction so some people put "+ username" and then periods or something to fulfill the character rule.

Just to clarify, only reason why a couple mods were on that list (including myself) is obviously if we quoted someone breaking the rule, a search would find posts with the offending phrase in it. Why would one think otherwise? Statistically, its only a small percentage of people who seem to continually break the same rules over and over again, so I would have to disagree that following the rules is a "hard task" in itself. If one had to summarize the rules, its really not that long and complicated. Most are common sense to follow. What does make it seem like its overly complex is the amount of detail some of our rules have to be stated and sorry to say but this is brought upon members by members themselves. Even when stated in detail, some members still continue to either misinterpret or ignore the rules. In the overall sense, this and the signature rule have a lot of impact well beyond members who are just annoyed by long sigs and useless posts. I don't care to nor find it necessary to explain in any additional detail, than already stated in the rules, as to why enforcement of these rules are important for Soompi.com but to put it simply, a very small percentage of people do a lot more harm than good. Dare I say but there are many "alternatives to Soompi forums" which offer a lot more leniency toward the types of rules Soompi has. We find that the rules we have in place are there for a reason and as a whole cater to help create a richer and robust community of users. We aren't saying our methods/rules are perfect and as with all things there is room for further improvement and member criticism/objections. However, we must be doing something right to be where we are today. As much as we may have our separate opinions about rules and how an internet forum should be run, in the end of the day users choose to come to Soompi.com forums. Given such, a majority participation does say something in itself.

As for the banning remark, I personally don't find it harsh enough in that there is no way to automate the process of catching those individuals. It's against the rules, you've been warned, and yet you choose to find another deceptive way to yet again break the same rule. It's not about breaking the specific rule. It's about one's total neglect of the rules and purposeful attempt to circumvent them in a devious/deceptive manner. I can't interpret this as any other way than "I read your rules, you warned me, I don't care as I can find another way not to get caught". Does this warrant a ban? In my books, 100%.

The following are violating the 20 character rule as well but there is no way to automate the process of detecting such users.

Established exceptions are obviously excluded. It has been established within the S/T forum that it is ok to bypass the rule when used for the purposes you are stating.
