Explosions in the Sky is one of my favourite musical acts to date.
And I'm seeing Mogwai next month at sled island!!
In terms of instrumental music that's a little more ambient and mellow (and not so heavily guitar based), i'd go with the album leaf, the one am radio, lymbyc systym, tristeza, telefon tel aviv..
Sigur ros, this will destroy you, godspeed you! are also all fantastic

Hell I love you!

Flicker is absolutely golden.. I remember listening to it for the first time and putting it on repeat for the remainder of my day.

I think as far as Explosions goes, 'The Earth is not...' is my favorite, but I didn't mind 'All of a Sudden...'. There were a few tracks I genuinely enjoyed but I admit that it's not as immediately likeable as some of the previous albums. It kind of has to grow on you I guess..

That's so awesome (not the spending the night at Union Station), but the prospect of seeing them live. I would perish from sheer happiness.

When i first saw this topic i first though of explosions in the sky
sigur ros is awesome, been a fan for ages now

This is true. I really like "The Birth and Death of the Day" and "Catastrophe and the Cure" off their latest. But something about 'The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place' is just so cohesive and subtle to me.

Where do you live? I notice that you've been to a lot of concerts, so I'm wondering. I'm in NJ, and NYC is right above me. Problem is that NJ public transportation stops at 1 am...damn!

Another good post-rock band is Appleseed Cast -- I forgot to mention them.

I live in Calgary, CANADA.
Haha, not the greatest music hot spot but not bad at all.
I would say that I've been to my fair share of shows, and music festivals are wonderful when it comes to branching out and diversifying.
We have a folk fest coming up and Conor Oberst is set to make an appearance so I'm really stoked!
Also, Sled Island is a massive music/art festival that lasts about a week with hundreds of acts from everywhere.
Do you go to shows a lot? I'm sure it's amazing being so close to NYC.

I will check them out!

Oh, that's nice. Canada is my friend. I like your music and your health care.

Well, the thing is that NJ public transportation stops so early in the night. Most of these shows end so late, and I'm not a fan of paying ridiculous taxi fare. Oh, gosh, I missed so many good shows in NYC because of this -- Explosions, Okkervil River, Voxtrot, Prayers and Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers, ahhhh. I'm only in NJ for college anyway. Back in my hometown, I think the only recognizable name in the past few months was Billy Joel. Which is, you know, okay.

I think we may be the same person.
Okkervil River is my favourite band, ever.
Their new album is coming out in september!!

I've always wanted a doppelganger...
Okkervil River frickin' rocks my world. I don't think there's a more perfect song than "A Stone." I've gotta say that I like 'Black Sheep Boy' and 'Down the River of Golden Dreams' a lot more than 'Stage Names' though. I hope they revert a bit to their older sound on their upcoming album.

'A Stone' is pure lyrical genius. It's the first Okkervil song I ever heard and, to this day, remains my favourite. Black Sheep Boy Appendix has really great tracks too. The two go hand in hand as far as quality.. Another Radio Song is fantastic. 'Down the River...''s Blanket and Crib, Maine Island Lovers, War Criminal.., and Song About a Star are soooooooooo good! AH! I don't think that I could get into many songs from 'Stage Names' either.. Although I do enjoy Unless It's Kicks just because it's so bouncy and such a good driving song.

Dude, you are SERIOUSLY my Canadian doppelganger.

"A Stone" was my first Okkervil River song and hands down my favorite track by them, TOO. I absolutely love "No Key No Plan" and "Black Sheep Boy #4" from the Appendix. Please tell me you've heard "A Favor" from 'Sleep and Wake-Up Songs'? So lovely. 'Don't Fall in Love with Everyone You See' has some fantastic tracks as well -- "Red" and "West Falls" especially. Probably Okkervil River at their "folksiest." Ahhh, I'm going into spasms of joy.

GOOD LORD IT'S SO TRUE!
You just named ALL the tracks I did not mention that I LOVE.. SO SO SO MUCH.
I think I may be far too excited but this is just so wonderful!
A Favor is beautiful. It's on my Okkervil sleep playlist haha that and Black Sheep Boy #4
If you were here, we'd be best friends. And we'd sing the words to these songs in perfect unison.
They're also coming for Sled Island! Will Sheff & Co. in the flesh!!

I think I have the entire Okkervil discography..
If it turns out I don't, I won't be too pleased with my music collecting abilities.
onhotwires
Are 65daysofstatic or Red Sparowes post-rock? If so, post rock is pretty good. But I have not listened to any of these other acts, except for GYBE. Any more recommendations?

And what about the live shows? How do you dance/do whatever to this stuff? What I've heard sounds pretty ambient and more for like...relaxing?

Oh my gosh, if I didn't love you so much already, I'd hate you. I'd kill to see them live. I hope they sing "A Stone." Just for you.

I have most of their earlier stuff, but I actually don't have all of 'Stage Names' and am probably missing a ton of b-sides. I actually think I am more partial to their earlier work.

What do you think of Shearwater, Sheff's other group?

That would complete my life.

I agree. Early Okkervil is, in my opinion, much more endearing. Speaking of which, so is early Shearwater!
They did not woo me immediately like the first time I listened to Okkervil River.. but there are a lot of tracks that enjoy just as much as O.R.
'Everybody Makes Mistakes' is my favourite Shearwater album, that and 'Winged Life'.
I love 'Room for Mistakes', '12:09', 'A Hush' and 'My Good Deed'..
It's a lot more consistently mellow than Okkervil, which I am in the mood for sometimes.
What about you?
duchess
I saw Explosions in the Sky perform back in April and holy mother of god it was the most AMAZING SHOW EVER. Hearing them perform live was like being introduced to their music all over again; every note they played hit every cell of my body.

I had tickets to their show two years ago when they came here but at the last minute I couldn't make it. T'was the saddest day. tears.gif

I agree. Shearwater does not make my playlist as often as Okkervil River. I can hear Sheff's influence nevertheless. I enjoy "An Accident," "Well, Benjamin," and "Soon."

You've reawakened my love for Okkervil River, and I've been listening to them constantly. And oh my gosh, "For Real" still makes me jump in my seat! One of the most brilliant and creepiest songs ever. Also, do you know anyone else who can make such a gorgeous song about a war criminal?

Okkervil River makes me fangirly.

For Real and Black are two of my favourite jumpy Okkervil songs! My friend and I walked around all day just listening to Okkervil and I must admit, I have never been so content in my life. You just can't get sick of them! I'm pretty sure War Criminal is uh, mind-blowing to say the least. Yes, Will, the heart DOES in fact want soft furniture.

Can we also discuss the wonder that is 'Another Radio Song'?? When it gets really incredibly intense? *swoon*

Yes, we can! I love what they do at 1:58 -- it's so beautiful! And by 4:00, I'm going into spasms of joy -- the buildup is simply amazing. I also appreciate the narrative continuity between Sheff's songs. "Another Radio Song" + "A Glow." "A King and a Queen" + "A Stone." Sheff is a poet.

What other artists are generally on your playlist? We have similiar taste in music, and I'm actually looking for some new stuff to listen to. Emusic is a great service but kind of overwhelming.

Ugh I know, isn't it?! That song actually puts me in so many moods within a 5 minute period.

Hm, that's a good question! Maybe we can swap some favourites? I've been looking for some new stuff to listen to too. I think it really depends for me, I'll go through these phases where I want to listen to just a certain genre or artist. So I usually make playlists based on the sound and general musical direction of the artist/band. I have entire playlists dedicated solely to Bright Eyes, Okkervil, and Death Cab. Other than that, I can sort of organize what I've been listening to recently for you? We can kinda go from there haha soooooooo...

SUMMER MUSIC (because we all know that summer playlists are the best): someone still loves you boris yeltsin, fruit bats (listen to Canyon Girl, you'll love it), headlights (aka.. stars v 2.0? kind of..), bishop allen, sunset rubdown, wolf parade, oh no! oh my!, vampire weekend, the pants situation

FOLKY: bon iver (Flume is my favourite), chad van gaalen, jose gonzalez, phosphorescent, iron & wine (w/calexico: 'he lays in the reins' is magnificent), beirut, sparrow house ('When I Am Gone' = what love sounds like), great lake swimmers

BRITS (ah, yes..): arctic monkeys (of course..), kooks, pigeon detectives, razorlight, maximo park, tunng, maccabees, cribs, klaxons, kaiser chiefs, eight legs, arkitekt, sunset underground

4EVER (the classics.. for me anyway): the shins, modest mouse, interpol, against me!, band of horses, blonde redhead, bloc party, brand new, coldplay, cold war kids, elliott smith, handsome furs, richard walters, postal service, voxtrot, wax on radio, ugly casanova etc....

I'm pretty sure I missed a crapload but I guess that's the initial attempt at kind of generalizing for you!

QUOTE (babiesburn @ Jun 16 2008, 01:47 PM) *
Hey, thanks! Some of these I don't recognize, and some I remember seeing around e-music. Okay, awesome.

You've named some of my favorites... I love love love Iron & Wine's collaboration with Calexico. And I like Calexico alone ('Feast of Wire'), but not Iron & Wine. Beirut's second album is pure gold, which suprised me 'cos I wasn't a fan of 'Gulag.' The tracks from 'Flying Cup' make me want to dance down a Parisian street. And I really enjoy Sunset Rubdown and Swan Lake (if you haven't listened to "All Fires" yet, your life is incomplete), but not Wolf Parade. Strange.

And yes, Voxtrot has some great tracks ("Firecracker" especially), and Modest Mouse's "Spitting Venom" is a MASTERPIECE, yo. I wouldn't say they're "heavy rotation" for me, but I definitely get a itch to listen to them. Early Coldplay holds a special place in my heart as well.

Oh, and I love Death Cab so much. Pre-'Plans' anyway. Sorry, but nothing they do these days can match the beauty of "Line of Best Fit," "Prove My Hypotheses," or "Army Corps." And Bright Eyes brings some much needed earnestness in my life (oh, "Poison Oak"...).

Have you tried the following? I'm sure you've heard of most of them.

- MUSE (Early work is good...'Showbiz,' 'Absolution,' 'Origin of Symmetry')
- Travis (Another Brit band whose early work is much better.)
- The Decemberists (Seems like this band is one of those love/hate ones. I tend to the side of love.)
- Neutral Milk Hotel (Indie staple, right? The track "In an Airplane Over the Sea" changed my life.)
- Bedhead / The New Year (I love this group to frickin' pieces, and I'm so sad they're not more well-known. Low-key rock. Try 'Beheaded' and 'What Fun Life Was.')
- Elvis Perkins ("Ash Wednesday" is unfiltered beauty and brilliance)
- Jens Lekman ("Black Cab"!!!)
- The National ("Slow Show," "Guest Room," "Friend of Mine")
- Pedro the Lion ('Achilles' Heel' and 'Control'...I just can't believe how good a songwriter this guy is.)
- Idaho (Piano-driven rock. Very pretty. "To Be the One," "Wandering the Fields," "Orange.")
- Prayers and Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers ("Concerning Lessons Learned From the Aliens," "Lisa," "Sun Fell on You," "Rotation of Crops")
- Afghan Whigs / Twilight Singers (I have never heard and will never hear another album quite like '1965.' Greg Dulli is unparalleled.)
- The Gloria Record (Emo. Pure, unabashed emo. But good emo. "I Was Born in Omaha," "The Overpass," "Cinema Air," "Torch Yourself," "Tired and Uninspired.")
- The Notwist ('Neon Golden')
- Mew (Nothing serious. Theatrical and fun. Lots of strings and synths.)

If you need any help finding tracks, let me know! I like sharing music and helping people see the light... :/

Thanks for this list though. Seriously.

If you ever happen to be able to catch Modest Mouse live, you will be blown away. I saw them last April I believe and Spitting Venom was apart of their encore.. It almost brought a tear to my eye because it was SO AMAZING. Death Cab wise, I agree. 'You can play these songs with chords' is my fav.. 'Champagne from a paper cup' and 'Wait' have always been really nostalgic for me. I love it when certain songs bring you way back, it's the best feeling. Swan Lake! Of Course! 'All Fires' is, quite honestly, perfect. Sunset Rubdown's 'Shut up I am dreaming of places where lovers have wings' is HEAVY rotation for me. I love how it builds up and then EXPLODES at around 3:10.. and 5:08 till the end of the song is what I look forward to every time..

NICE LIST!
I'm so happy to hear that someone appreciates Pedro the Lion as much as me. 'The Poison' from 'Achilles Heel' is a personal favourite. Kind of slow but really nice. Have you also listened to David Bazan's 'Fewer moving parts' ('fewer broken pieces' and 'making it, faking it, breaking it' = thumbs up) and his other... band I guess... Headphones? They all pretty much sound the same but there are a few gems you can find that are like no other.. such as 'slow car crash' and 'wise blood'. If anything, I think Headphones is a lot more electronic.

MUSE! ugh, 'plug in baby' is an all time fav. It just reminds me of being young and stupid. And I think you're totally right about the Decemberists. There are a few tracks that I can't stand. But then you get 'shankill butchers' which is totally weird and unsually which I adore.

Hands down, what sold me on your music taste is 'In The Aeroplane Over the Sea'. Oh my god, if there were any song that describes every aspect of life, it is that one. I will definitely take a gander at some of the names that aren't so familiar because I know I can trust you when it comes to expanding my library.

To add a little.. Please tell me you have heard of (and if so, LOVE) Sufjan Stevens? 'To be alone with you' is nothing short of perfection and the entire 'Michigan' album is amazing. Tegan and Sara!! (btw, interesting fact, they went to my high school!).. 'So Jealous' and 'If it was you' are great albums. Not to say that their latest, 'The Con' wasn't also wonderful ("The Con", "Are you ten years ago", "Knife going in"). J. Tillman's "When I light your darkened door" and "Steel on steel" are tracks you DEFINITELY have to check out, too. They're beautiful.

For sure, and same.. Some of the artists or albums I listed aren't the easiest to come by so if there's anything that catches your.. ear? Just let me know and I'll get you the tracks!

Yo!

Ah, yes, Sufjan. I can't say he's super heavy rotation for me, but that guy has a singular sound. I love "Flint," "Oh God, Where Are You Now?," "Decatur," "Romulus," and "Come On! Feel the Illinoise!" And "To Be Alone With You" is an indie staple! It's beauuuutiful. Random: I heard Sufjan at the grocery store the other day -- right after Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Love Is."...yea, I was pretty confused, too.

You know, I've always been meaning to check out Tegan and Sara, but I never had the chance. I'll make an effort this month. Neat that they're your HS alumni. Canadians are cool.

I am already in love with Sparrow House's "When I am Gone." Thanks for the rec. It reminds me of Simon and Garfunkel with an indie twist. And J. Tillman -- I hear a little Sheff in "Steel"! Or is that wishful thinking, haha. But will definitely be following up on that.

Yes! I am so glad you like Pedro the Lion! Brilliant, brilliant song-writing. "Rapture" makes me crazy-happy. Other people say it turns them on. "Arizona" is just perfect -- "Scissors cut paper / Paper covers rock / Rock crushes scissors /Scissors fall apart." I was not aware of David Bazan's other projects. So glad you introduced them. I am enraptured by "Fewer Broken Pieces" on the first listen.

Neutral Milk Hotel. YES. I discovered this band so randomly, and I am so grateful, actually GRATEFUL, I did. 'In the Aeroplane Over the Sea' is without a doubt most beautiful and cohesive work in my music library. There's a raw and vulnerable beauty that is unparalleled (Conor, you come damn close though!). "Two-Headed Boy Pt. 2" makes me weep.

I've got some more for you:

Wheat ("Soft Polluted Blacks," "Working Man's Manifesto," "Tubesoft," "Raised Ranch Revolution," "Don't I Hold You," "San Diego." Early work is definitely better.)
Palaxy Tracks ('Twelve Rooms' is best)
Pinback (Another indie classic -- "Loro," "Tripoli")
Slowdive ("Dagger," "Catch the Breeze")
Auktyon (Kind of on crack. "Son" is a must-listen.)
Clap Your Heads Say Yeah (Hit-or-miss for me. But BIG YESes for "Five Easy Pieces," "The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth," "In This Home on Ice.")
Deer Tick (I think this one is definitely to your taste, if you haven't listened already. "Dirty Dishes," "Standing at the Threshold.")
The Wrens (PLEASE listen to "13 Months in 6 Minutes" if you haven't already. I hope it moves you the same way.)

Ahhh, you are quickly becoming one of my favorite people.

I've listened to tons of your suggestions and I must say, I'm thoroughly impressed! Palaxy Tracks is settling quickly and VERY nicely. I love "speech with animals". I've been trying to find the entire album but have had no luck yet. I'll probably just end up buying it! Deer Tick's "Standing at the Threshold" is fantastic! I was kind of put off by the lead singer's voice at first but it actually grew on me (kind of like joanna newsom.. at first I wanted to die listening to her). Both Bedhead and The New Year are so so so good! The first time I listened to "the end's not near" all I could think of was the O.C. (the series finale's title was "The end's not near, it's here".. lol). "13 Months in 6 Minutes" is a classic. I can definitely say that it's something else.

hahaha I can't believe Sufjan was playing over the grocery store sound system! That's hilarious! If only my grocery store veered away from non-offensive radio pop-rock once in a while, I'd go produce lurkin' more often!

You really must listen to Tegan and Sara. They're so funny too. Their latest release came with a DVD documenting the recording of each individual song on the record. I lol'd so many times througout haha.

I'm going to keep going until I have nothing left to offer here, haha (I may have mentioned some of these before but haven't suggested tracks that really stand out, so to make it a little less overwhelming, I'll take your approach!)

great lake swimmers ("imaginary bars", "your rocky spine", "passenger song")
damien jurado ("and now that i'm in your shadow" (absolutely heartbreaking/lovely), "hoquiam", "hotel hospital" -- beautiful low key folk)
cocoon (kind of reminds me of Sufjan minus the gargantuan orchestral arrangements. listen to "paper boat", "take off", "tell me")
the arcade fire (once you get into them, you will never get tire of them.. honestly. "une annee sans lumiere", "rebellion (lies)", "my body is a cage")
surface of atlantic (very Radiohead-esque, very very pretty. "horizon line", "in a forest")
rocky votolato (if you don't already love him, you will.. a lot. "suicide medicine", "your darkest eyes", "whiskey straight", "prison is private property")
odawas ("alleluia" is so haunting and magnificent. you will fall in love.)
nico ("these days" you may recognize her from The Velvet Underground, and if you've seen The Royal Tenenbaums, you'll recognize this gem)
belle & sebastian ("piazza, new york catcher" = most definitely a summer song)
wax on radio (vocals are great, really progressive. "dawn architects", "when in rome", "time will bind us to the guilt of commitment")

Not gonna lie, I haven't been so happy sharing music with anyone else in a really long time!
catsinheat
;X sort of jumping into this, and i have nothing to add to the current conversation, so i apologize:

but i'm really digging some lyric-less japanese acts: de de mouse, rei harakami, mono, etc. i'd say the first two are more electronic, but they're brilliant. impeccable. i think mono qualifies as post rock.

(also, pedro the lion + neutral milk hotel = y/y)

Yo. Feeling is mutual. Love your playlists.

Surface of Atlantic is fantastic. Thanks for the rec. Definitely hear the Radiohead thing. I am also enjoying Wax on Radio like crazy. "Time Will Bind Us" is awesome, slightly Modest Mouse-esque. Very different styles in one album. I dl'ed Odawas' "Alleluia" a while ago on someone else's rec, and it's taking me a while, but it is quite lovely. I have been in love love love with Arcade Fire with a long time. "Rebellion" should be my generation's anthem. "Crown of Love" is MY anthem. First album is pure gold, second album more hit-and-miss. Emusic has a lot of the artists your mentioned, and I am having a super time exploring.

Yes, Deer Tick has a somewhat nasal (?) voice. But I just fell in love with "Dirty Dishes." Make sure you give that one a listen!

Here are some other singles for you when nothing else is hitting the spot:

Margot & The Nuclear So & So's - "Skeleton Key"
Appleseed Cast - "Decline," "Take," "How Life Can Turn," "Stars" -- blah, EVERYTHING.
Calla - "Initiate," "It Dawned on Me," "Pulverized"
Ivy - "Nothing But the Sky," "Thinking About You"

Let me know what Palaxy Tracks you're looking for, and I'll see if I can help you out. Ditto on the Bedhead / New Year. Their styles change across their albums, but 'What Fun Life Was' and 'Beheaded' are my favorites.

Thanks! Let me know how that music festival goes.

Dear friend..

I just got home from seeing Okkervil River and I feel it only fair I tell you how it went before I start to screw up details out of excitement and glee. First off, they played in this little church along a bustling street of lights, so it was so intimate and wonderful. Opening for them were Raccoon, Mother Mother, and Consonant C (all of which are fantastic! you should check them out asap!).. the crowd was so awesome and the bands were interactive and fun. After 3 sets and some few minutes in between, Will Sheff and his fellow bandmates finally emerge from the wooden door behind the "stage" (which was just defined by speakers enveloping a drum kit, keyboards, and guitars). The set list has become a little blurry but I do believe that they opened with a track from 'Stage Names' and I cannot, for the life of me, remember which one.. but I do remember that the song quickly faded into 'Black'.. *siiiigggghhh* it was fantastic. They played songs from Black Sheep Boy, Don't Fall in Love With Everyone You See, and Stage Names. I was hoping they'd play 'Red' or something from Down the River, but sadly, they did not. For real, Unless it's kicks, Westfall, The Latest Toughs were all played with so much energy it was infectious. The entire band was so into it and mouthing the words, dancing, and having a great time.

"Now, here's the more "church-y" part of our set." utters Will. And.. just like that.. the crowd goes dead silent.
Hot breath, rough skin, warm laughs and smiling.
The loveliest words - whispered and meant, you like all these things...

My heart stopped, and all I remember was not blinking for about 5 and a half minutes. I really wish you could have experienced what it was like. Not a single sound throughout the entire church except for Will and his acoustic guitar. And then the trumpet came in.. *SWOOOOOOON*. Pretty sure that was the best moment of my life. They go on to sing Girl in Port, So Come Back I am Waiting, Plus Ones, A Hand to Take Hold.., and a few others. I hope I've kind of sort of relayed just how amazing this night was.. Something I know you would have adored.

It was, to say the least, perfect.

Ps. Margot and the nuclear so & so's are one of my favs. "dress me like a clown" is ugh.. so. damn. good.
Thanks for the other recs, they're all great!

How about Public Image Ltd? They might be more post-punk though. I'm actually not too familiar with the post-rock genre. Well I know that bands like Sigur Ros and Mogwai are considered post-rock.

Yes. Just, YES. This thread can die in peace now.

I'm so elated for you. That was a fantastic recap -- I actually got shivers when you started describing the performance of "A Stone." Haha, no lie! The church setting must have been perfect. And "Westfall"...oh, that must have been orgasmic. All in all, it sounds utterly amazing. Thanks for sharing, yo.

Was this at the massive music festival you've been referencing? How was Conor and other acts?

AH, it was fatastic!

This was Sled Island and it was fricken gargantuan. It lasted almost a week with hundreds of acts. However, Conor is coming for Folk Fest, which is a two day festival at the end of this month, which I won't be here for because I'll be in San Francisco.. UGH but but but Sled Island was.. perfect. I saw Tegan and Sara, Broken Social Scene, Apostle of Hustle, The Coast, among many others. They were all exceptional! It was just so chill and the venues were all over the place. It may have been the best few days of my life haha.
