MTV Asia Awards 2008 Coming To Genting- City of Entertainment, Malaysia, For the First Time

MTV Networks Asia's flagship show - MTV Asia Awards (MAA) 2008 is all set to take over the Malaysian music scene! The highly anticipated pan-regional music event is back for the sixth year running, bringing music excitement to all music fans in over nine countries in Asia. For the first time, the Awards show that celebrates and pays tribute to regional and international music talents will be held at the Arena of Stars in Genting- City of Entertainment, Malaysia on August 2, 2008 and will be hosted by Jared Leto of 30 Seconds to Mars. The MAA 2008 will be broadcasted to over 291 million homes across the region. Regular updates will be available at the official website at www.mtvasiaawards.com. Portions of the programming will be carried on MTV channels worldwide, reaching more than a billion viewers across 162 countries.

This year's host Jared Leto is an accomplished singer and actor. In 1998, Jared Leto formed the band 30 Seconds to Mars in which he is the lead vocalist and guitarist. The band had spent most of the last four years touring the world and their second album A Beautiful Lie was certified platinum by Recording Industry Association of America in 2006. Since then, the band has picked up the MTV2 Award at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards for the music video, "The Kill," as well as bringing home the Best Rock Video and Video of the Year at the 2007 MTV Australia Video Music Awards. Leto also garnered critical acclaims for his role in the movie Requiem For A Dream, after which he went on to work with David Fincher on Fight Club and Panic Room.

MTV will be presenting a total of 16 awards during the show to honor and promote the icons of youth culture and music. There will be nine regional favorite artist awards and seven international awards which include exciting additions such as The Video Star Award, Breakthrough Artist, The Innovation Award, Best Hook-Up, Bring Da House Down Award and edc Style Award.

Be prepared to be knocked out by the spanking new refreshing format of the Awards. With live music at the center stage, expect nothing but a whole night of exciting performances. The highlight is on pure music entertainment with five sets of live acts in the evening, each performing sets of two to three songs. In a nutshell, "M" is back and better!

To foster interaction with the audience, MAA 2008 is going multi-platform to allow fans to call the shots on the 10 voting categories come June 14. A novel dimension to the Awards is the "So You Wanna Be A Presenter" contest where local viewers submit their coolest and quirkiest video at www.mtvasiaawards.com for the chance to present the nominees in the awards show. Who will be this year’s “Favorite Artist - Korea” award winner at the 2008 MTV Asia Awards?

The poll for this year’s winner of the said award will open on June 14 at MTV Asia Awards’ official homepage. Vying for the title of “Favorite Artist - Korea” are BIG BANG, Girls’ Generation, Wonder Girls and Super Junior. These candidates were selected through a survey among music industry officials and journalists and the winner of the award will be based on an online poll, which will end on July 25.

Previous winners of the “Favorite Artist - Korea” award were Rain, in 2005, and Se7en, in 2006.

The 2008 MTV Asia Awards will be held on August 2 at the Arena of Stars in Genting, Malaysia.

Here are my overall opinion for this year awards. btw, today they played some MV from Asian nominees.

Favourite Artist Mainland China/HK/Taiwan - since I not familiar with anybody. I just know S.H.E only. Well, if Farenheit/LeeHom/Jay Chou it will be different story.

Favourite Artist Philippines - I only knew past year winner Rivermaya. Anybody can suggest/give info about the nominess. How about the Philipino Idol dude? I can't wait for Paragon Child to debut.

Favourite Artist Thailand - I know nothing about recent singer. I just know Tata Young and Bird Tongchai

Favourite Artist Singapore - JJ Lin n Stef Sun not bad but why they don't have Taufik Batishah/Imran Ajmain or maybe Aliff Aziz.

Favourite Artist Korea - I rooting for Big Bang for performances & awards and WG for presenting the award. It not wise to bring 13 ppl or 9 ppl with the entourage for just few min appearances. If ppl said they famous here, it will be unfair for other singers from other countries too. btw, Malaysia have REALLY strict codes for dressing for performances/concert so another minus point.

Favourite International Artist in Asia - LP is famous here but why no MCR since they had concerts in Asia early this year. anybody can do. I don't mind.

Favourite Artist Indonesia - I love all the nominees here. Just wish that PeterPan, Sheila on 7, Dewa19 or Keris Patih and Gita Gutawa on the list too. I root for Andra & The Backbone and Yovie & Nuno

That is because Japan has their own MTV Music Awards.
And DBSK is not one of the nominees for Korea because they have been in Japan most of the year.





Well, the nominees are all bands, like Rivermaya.
Too bad Rivermaya is not as famous right now as they were in the past years. (Because they already have a new vocalist. Hence, a new "face" for their band)
the music industry here in the Philippines is dominated by bands of all genres.

Chicosci's genre is Emo and Punk.
Sandwich is Alternative. With a slight mix of techno.
Sponge Cola is Alternative.
Urbandub is progressive Rock.

I am rooting for Urbandub because they're my favorite.
I love their songs. And the band members as well.
And they're the best among the nominated ones. IMO, anyway. xD

Sandwich has good songs, too.

I used to like Sponge Cola. But now? I don't anymore.

The Filipino Idol? I have no idea what you're talking about.
But as I've already said, the music scene here in the Philippines is dominated by bands. They are just all over the place. And much more famous than solo artists. xD
So I doubt if a solo artist from the Phils. could ever win this thing. xD

Genting Arena? Seriously? But it's small! Dude, I watch disney on ice there (ahem, with my little nephew ofcourse), that is no place for an event like MAA. But what the heck right? So, as for the nominees for Korea, its a tough call. But I think it's either gonna be BB or WG's game. S'pore, it sucks that the fact that The entertainment scene is divided into two; the chinese-singaporian and the malay- singaporian. So, whatev.. As for Malaysia, seriously, why dont they just cut to the chase and give Siti the award since everyone knows she's gonna win. Thats all i know for now.

There was 1 last year. It was held in Bangkok, Thailand I think Rain was the winer for Korea, Twins from HK got one. Jolin Tsai from Taiwan also won something realated to dancing ... I forgot

The place is small but it better small and packed with people than large place and empty space. Beside that is city of entertainment many fun stuff can do there. Right now leading for Malaysia is Nicholas Teo. Siti was left far. Large fanbase this time for Nicholas Teo. I keep voting for Faizal Tahir. This is his year. Let's vote for FAIZAL TAHIR.

Tickets to MTV Asia Awards cannot be bought or sold (unless from those who got it + do not wan to go and wan to sell it), you only can win it through contests and roadshows. SO guys, go for the roadshows near your area. Join contests from radio or MTV. BTW, from my previous experiences, those who don have tickets can actually get in after the shows starts for 30 mins, coz MTV wont let pple down. But u will missed the first 30 mins of the show and stand really far from the stage. So its better if can get the tix earlier. Happy tix hunting pple!!

my sister is working for genting - in one of the departments in charge for the show.
according to her, tickets will be given out by mtv during their road shows as follows:

27 June – Infinity Mall, Mumbai
4 July – Hong Yi Plaza, Shanghai
6 July – Siam Paragon, Bangkok
12/13 July – Wisma Atria , Singapore
19/20 July – Cineleisure, KL

the list of artists who are coming for the show is not finalised yet. but my sis heard that alicia keys and one republic is coming.

edit: ^^ hotsungie - good luck in getting into the venue after 30 minutes....genting's show security is real tight. they won't let people go in without tickets. but if u really want to watch, they're having a live telecast in another venue up in genting. at least u'll get to watch the show early as they will only air the show on TV a few days later.

Nominees for every categories have been shortened to 4 this year. Previous they have 5 nominees. Why they cut back one.

btw, result for voting internet is not the final one. I remember for Malaysia candidate on 2006 when during the voting period Fish Leong was leading all the way and when the result announced it was Mawi. I not sure about other countries. but remember there are another 2 way of voting more beside only voting. by using SMS (for ppl that don't have internet access) n Wapmobile. So far only Malaysia n Singapore available. I'm not sure about other country.

For me, it was joint performance by Siti Nurhaliza & Gareth Gates. Rumour said that when Siti singing Gareth part. They turn down the volume because Siti voica range is much larger than Gareth. They don't want to show that Asian people can sing that well.
