Younha

Younha was born in Seoul, South Korea on April 29th, 1988. She began playing the piano at the early age of 4. Her talent and gift for both singing, learning languages, and playing the piano were obvious from the early start of her career. She taught herself Japanese and auditioned in many places (including SM Entertainment, to which she was eventually turned away from) before debuting under a Japanese record label in 2004. Her song "Houki Boshi," which was used for the popular TV anime show, Bleach, launched her career and broke her into the Oricon Top 20 charts.

Younha then debuted in Korea with her digital Korean single "Audition" which was relatively well received in the Korean market, Younha went along with the release of her first Korean album. This album has received very warm and good reviews as reflected in her SBS Inkigayo Mutizen awards of late as well as peaking on sales charts at #1. The first song promoted from this album was 비밀번호 486 (Bi Mil Bun Ho 486, translated "Secret Number (Password) 486"). The second song to be promoted from this album was 연애조건 (Yeonae Jogeon ("Love Condition"). With her increasing success, Younha released a version of Go! Younha rerecorded in Korean. The album is titled 혜성(Comet). Returning to Japan with a Best Of Japanese album/music video DVD, SONGS -Teen's Collection- on 2008. Comeback in Korea with a new full-length album, Someday, comprised of 17 tracks of various genres. Someday album maintained a good sales record holding up at the Top 5 on the sales charts for more than a month after it was released.

Younha and Lee Sun-hee, the Diva of South Korea
On Immortal Musical Classics (Season 2, Episode 6-7) Lee Sun-hee and Younha finally met! Younha have sung Sun-hee's songs earlier, but this is the first time in the Diva's presence. Lee Sun-hee was very pleased with Younha's singing, and played the melody for "good" or "correct" twice, as if she wanted to assure Younha that she liked her interpretation a lot! It is said that Lee Sun-hee wanted to see Younha, that she even requested for her to be there. Unfortunately, as Lee Sun-hee seems to be preparing for her comeback, Younha is preparing for a comeback in Japan. Will they meet again soon? Or is heaven a place far from earth? smile.gif

How to save Youtube video in highest quality (link to forum post)
(When seeing a video on YouTube that you'd like to save you can easily download it by adding "mp4" to the adress after "youtube". For example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPH747uVux0 becomes http://www.youtubemp4.com/watch?v=XPH747uVux0.)

How to save Youtube Videos in HD and mp4 with Firefox Addon
If you are using Firefox you just simply have to download an addon for this. Because it's now (feb 2009) still a beta, you'll have to sign up to download it. But it's free, and with no risk I think to receive spam later on. The videos which are available as HD on Youtube are the ones you can download. Link to HD and mp4 video will be shown on YouTube site, below the description text. The link will still be there for those none HD videos as well, and then it wont work. Then you'll have to download mp4.
|
If you do not have and don't want to get Firefox there should be good alternatives out there. Just google something like "How to save Youtube Videos in HD and mp4" and you'll see. Might be some risk for none serious sites though, so beware.

How to bookmark (in browser) the last unread post in this thread
The link above always go to the last post. So just save that address to your bookmark.
Note. If you like to read last unread posts in a thread you see on soompi, you can simply click on the orange rectangle which you can only see if there really is any unread posts. By adding the thread to your topics you wont have to search for this thread either. Just go to options on first post above. Then find this thread on your own soompi page.

How to share pictures Pictures you like to share should always be uploaded by yourself so it wont generate extra traffic to other sites where you might have found it. Simply upload it to photobucket, which is a free service.

Hot to make animations of pictures or screencaptures (some suggestions)
An interesting program for any animation work called Pencil (saves videos as flv, same as YouTube video basically).

How to pronunce Younha's name correctly
It should be pronunced like 'Yoon-Ha'. It is common that her name is pronunced 'Yunna' instead in Japan.
The best way to learn this pronunciation is to listen to it in recordings. I will add a link to a suitable example of this.

During 2008 Younha was in the filming process of a new Japanese movie which probably will have it's premier sometime in late Mars? Her old Korean song "Waiting" is used as theme song. During our wait for the movie's premier, Younha is in the preparings or recordings of her new Japanese album.
18th Mars a PV with younha's "The Other Side of the Rainbow" was released (OST for the movie). (Video)

I've heard her songs and she's pretty good. So is K.

I don't understand what's up with Koreans debuting in Japan, is it easier to debut there?
Take Five
^for females, probably dry.gif

besides, people there actually buy albums.
Jaeho
She actually is known in Korea for gaining fame in Japan. She just hasn't debuted in her home country. If Younha and K decide to debut in Korea, I bet they'll become popular.

QUOTE

Korean things are popular now in Japan.
pinklegirl007
I find that the singers who get hit in Japan are less multi-talented like k-pop singers, but they are more excellent in one area... you know what I mean.... In J-pop, if your singing is excellent, you don't have to be good looking or wear nice clothing... where as the K-pop stars that are sucessful are usually all round, ok in singing, dancing, and good looking... It depends on what you prefer... but I think it would be easier to please a J-pop crowd, cuz its less demanding....

I find that the singers who get hit in Japan are less multi-talented like k-pop singers, but they are more excellent in one area... you know what I mean.... In J-pop, if your singing is excellent, you don't have to be good looking or where nice clothing... where as the K-pop stars that are sucessful are usually all round, ok in singing, dancing, and good looking... It depends on what you prefer... but I think it would be easier to please a J-pop crowd, cuz its less demanding....

^ i think this hits a point.

sometimes i also think its because the j-music audience is slightly more mature/accepting of different music types. so it's easier for them to accept what younha or k wants to do. so they debut in japan first. or it could just be simply that the j-music market is much larger so its easier for them to do the stuff they want to do. (i could be totally wrong about this. i don't know either younha or k and really don't know that type of music they really want to do as an artist). but it would be nice to see them recognized as singers in korea too eventually...
like, with jaurim in their beginning days (if i'm not mistaken) they did a lot of acts in japan. slowly the korean general population likes them/knows them (although they've been known in the korean underground for a while).

about k though, his j-music sometimes makes me think of ken hirai. maybe it's their singing voice style...
mei
she's from SM right? she's so young and talented..gahh

the fact that she's known in korea when she hasn't even debuted there is quite good already.

Its not that your singing is excellent its the substance of the music. If your music is really good and touching all kinds of people, they will like your music. I feel that kpop now is 1-dimensional and shallow. The music they produce isn't really emotional felt at all nowadays. Its all really puppy love or sex that is being played. Thats why you have artists like K and Younha going to Japan, where they take notice to the music rather than the looks. Its easier to please the kpop crowd cause most artists are one-dimensional with what they do. There's no messages in music in kpop anymore its all "look he can dance wow" or "he can sing well" all the good artists do and all those artists are the same in that their songs are 1-dimensional puppy love or sex. It's like artists are creating songs in order to show off dancing or vocals rather than creating songs out of actual heartfelt emotions. I guess I ranted too much on how I feel about kpop but oh well.

Ummm...I would like to disagree. In my opinion, that's exactly what I think about American rap/hip-hop in general, but not Korean. I may not understand Korean, but some of the songs that I have read the translations off of are quite deep. And some of the artists don't write their own lyrics because their producer decides whatever they sing. They may also choose what the artist wears, what their hairstyle may be and their image. There are some artists that we may not know if they even have any say in their music career. One huge example, LSM who produced H.O.T., S.E.S., BoA and DBSG. I doubt they had much say in their clothing and hairstyle much less what they sing.

Vocals should also be a big part of singing, shouldn't it? I mean, you're saying that if a person had absolutely no talent in singing, sang off-key, their pitch is way off, and they don't know a single thing about music, yet sung a song that was very deep, could you stand listening to them for more than a minute? Or would you have to politely tell them to keep on practicing or something?

For an example, look at BoA. She's a Korean artist, yet I know a few people who think that she is Japanese. She is a well respected singer in Japan and very popular. Her songs are quite good and her singing ability is superb. But some of her songs are what you mentioned, yet the J-pop audience loves her nonetheless. Singing capability has to be measured if she wants to compete with all the other J-pop artists. I mean, not all the popular J-pop artists sing deep or meaningful songs do they? I think Locolotion by Orange Range would be a perfect example for my last question. I don't think it has any meaning, yet I love the beat and the guys sing/rap the song quite well.

And it depends on what your taste in music is. It may be both, it may be neither, it may be something completely different. I like K-pop and J-pop purely because of the composition, because I do not understand what the artists are singing.

LUCKILY, NO! She's from Sony Japan, I believe. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember I saw her on their artists' homepage. Anyways, since her first debut on PopJam singing Hoskiboshi, I felt in love with her. wub.gif Her music style is unique and she's really multi-talented; she can sing, write lyric (she co-wrote the Korean version of Yubikiri & If), and play the piano REALLY well. wink.gif I rather not see her dance, instead she should concentrate on singing her best on stage. She has real potential and I just hope she will suceed in Japan. Though I think she should stay as a Japanese artist FOREVER, I really want to see her on music shows every week and maybe even on gameshows. tongue.gif

I remember that someone told me when she was auditioning for a Korean music entertainment, they turned her down, and a Japanese music entertainment (it's Sony Japan right?) scouted her and trained her. Houki Boshi is indeed a very good song. I only have two songs of hers though, Houki Boshi and Touch. I would like to listen to more....

she seriously can vocalize.

Houki Boshi, I love that song. You guys should check out her new single "My Lover" also the pv is kinda funny/cute towards the end, but maybe i just think that.

The top rapper in America is Kanye West and his music is not known for that. The top artist in Korea is TVXQ...enough said. The artists that are told what to do are the ones running the kpop world which I find a little troublesome. It has always been like that but at least music was good then. Of course vocals is a huge part of singing, I didn't say I wanted a deep song with crappy vocals, thats called poetry. I'm saying all I hear are good vocals with no substance in the music behind it nowadays. I don't want every song ever to be a deep meaningful song, it'd be nice to hear some once in a while though in kpop. I love old school Hip Hop where beats were just pure enjoyment. The Japanese and American music industry is very broad and wide in the types of music they have but I find Korea is slipping away from that. I think they used to be unique in their music but not anymore. All I'm just saying is I'm glad there is an artist like Younha that has come along. She's refreshing to listen to. She's not like all the newcomers coming out. And there's a reason why she came debutted in Japan first. I bet if she debutted in Korea she'd easily be overlooked. Boa wasn't a huge hit until after her success in Japan and the release of her second album in Korea.

I have a feeling that you don't bother looking into music behind SM artists? TVXQ absolutely is not the "top artist" in Korea. Heck, one of SG Wannabe's recent albums even sold more than twice as much as both of TVXQ's albums. I used to look at Korean music in the same perspective; however, I have since discovered that you can find great diversity in the Korean industry if you look.

Younha is a korean Jpop singer who debuted in Japan with the song "Yubikiri". She hasn't debuted in Korea yet, but there were rumors that she would..She started to sing and play piano when she was 5 years old.
She first auditioned for SM(Korean Entertainment), but failed.
Later one she sent her demo tape to Sony Music Japan and got interested in her.
They accepted her and now she is a rising star.
Those who don't know her, she was the one who sang Bleach 3rd ED "Houki Boshi"
She has a unique talent of singing while playing the piano...

^^Haha..right! SM doesn't deserve Younha. I guess Younha auditioned for SM because SM promotes younger singers. I'm glad she went to Sony Music Japan or else she will never have the chance to shine with Boa being there. Even though people are already giving her the title, "Second BoA", I think people are beginning to recognize her name and her talent. GO YOUNHA! biggrin.gif

I agree. I was just gonna say... Korean music IS very diverse and it's a shame that some people sum up K-music with Hyori, TVXQ, etc. (I think their music's catchy though). There are so many talented Korean artists with deep music -- and they're just as or even more popular than the teenybopper singers.

Yeah, but the thing is, as it was already said in this thread, she was rejected when she auditioned for SM and so she sent a demo tape to Sony Music. That's how and why she debuted in Japan first. She couldn't in Korea because she wasn't with a company. She was accepted at Sony Music Japan and debuted in Japan. I don't think she even needs to debut in Korea cause she's doing great in Japan.

I'm soooo glad she didn't get accepted by SM Town. She most likely wouldn't have been able to develop the talents and skills she has now.

Younha's Korean management company or what not is called Stam(?) 스탐, and releases albums through Epic Records in Japan. Epic Records may be a subsidiary of Sony Music, but not quite sure. Wonderful talent. smile.gif

Whoooaaa maaannn!! I'm listening to her album right now and all I gotta say is that she's gonna be the next BIG ASS thing!! Jesus christ I find her vocal talent VERY SUPERB!!! So far the BEST voice from a female artist besides Reira and Vicki Zhao. Not high pitched, not squeaky, not scratchy, just PERFECT. Its so hard to find a female singer who can actually sing these days ya know. They all end up being squeaky and scratchy and falls off key. No offense to anyone out there. My view.
