The Mortal Instruments
The First Book

Synopsis
Clarissa Fray is out with her best friend, Simon Lewis, and they are spending the night at a club. As the night wears on, Clarissa, nicknamed Clary, witnesses a murder in one of the back rooms of the club. Three people, a boy covered in what Clary thinks are tattoos, a beautiful black haired girl, and another boy were all there as she saw the boy with the tattoos plunge a knife in a blue-haired boy's chest. The body then disappeared, leaving no trace of him, or his blood. The trio then turn and see Clary there. Clary asked what happened to the boy, to which the tattoed boy responds that he was a demon, and he returned to his home dimension. Clary is stunned, and the trio then leave, and Clary exits the room, leaves the club with Simon, and returns home.
The next day, her mother announces that Clary, her mother's friend Luke Garroway, and she will all be going on vacation for the summer. Clary gets extremely upset that she cannot stay with Simon for the summer, and her mother and she get in an argument. Clary then leaves to go to a bookstore with Simon. While there, Simon is about to tell Clary that he loves her, when Clary sees the boy with the tattoos from the club again. She follows him outside, in which he says that she has to come with him to his house. Once she asks why, he says that since she is human, or a 'mundane', she should not be able to see him or the demon, and it is a puzzle as to why she can see them. Clary then gets a call from her mother, which she answers. Her mother sounds like she is in pain, and tells Clary to call Luke, and the cell phone goes dead. Clary then starts running towards her house, and arrives.
Once arriving, she finds her house in disarray, and her mother nowhere to be found. She then is attacked by a demon, barely surviving, and then passing out. She wakes up on the front lawn of her house, with the tattoed boy there. He informs her that she's been poisoned by a demon, and then she passes out again.
She then wakes up in the church that the tattoed boy and other boy and girl from the club live. Clary then learns their names, the tattoed boy is Jace Wayland, the girl Isabelle Lightwood, and the boy Alec Lightwood, making Isabelle and Alec brother and sister. Clary learns that they all are what are called 'Shadowhunters', humans that have angel blood in them that hunt demons, with the help of half-demons, called Downworlders.

Synopsis
Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what's normal when you're a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who's becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn't ready to let her go -- especially the handsome, infuriating Jace Wayland. And Clary's only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil.
To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings -- and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace.
In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures her readers back into the dark grip of New York City's Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation.
