Banh bot chien is a fried savoury rice flour cake mashed up with an egg
and served over a bed of shredded raddish
with a smattering of spring onions and a soy sauce dip.

They're very good. I tried to make it once and it was a big disaster.

It's especially good when it is warm and the rice flour cake is crispy. The best part is dipping it in sweet soy sauce.
love it! my aunt makes the best ive ever tasted.
my mom tries.. but fails

I'm in the same boat as your mom.

Do you happen to know how your aunt makes it?

^ my mom just makes it from a bag of flour especially for that.
then she just cooks it slightly in a pot with water and oil.
then she just puts it in the oven and bakes it

it still tastes good.
Sometimes she fails though, like it'll be way too soft.
I like it kinda chewy O.o

I just had it yesterday... or was it the other day. But it's good. <3 I like it better when my mom makes it though (the dough is already made though - we just buy it from the market). Banh bot chien + soy sauce + Huey Fong Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce = yummy.

Are you referring to the turnip fried cakes served at dim sum. If so, they are really different from each other

I wouldn't really say it's vietnamese but more Chinese or the food has chinese roots.
The ones in the states are okay. I think I've only found a decent on at this corner chinese/viet restaurant by San Jose State.
I prefer the ones in Vietnam 'cause they're much more crispier and the sauce fits my taste better.

I've had it several times at restaurants. The dish is pretty good, but I gotta say, I don't think I'll ever crave it. I could live the rest of my life just fine if I don't eat it again. Nonetheless, it's pretty good.
