What is the standard for each of the major sports in regards to wearing uniform colors?

It's come to my attention more now with what I've seen in the NBA this season just beginning. Most teams wear white at home. But some teams for their opener or something have worn their colored jerseys with in contrast the visiting team they wear white. Which confuses me. Something I've in some of the games.

Now with other sports they also have their standard rule. But I'm not sure about. In hockey, I think, they once had the home team in white but changed it to home team in colors. In Football and Baseball from how I see it varies.

I've been looking more into this sort of thing.

from what i know, it usually depends on the sport, in most basketball programs white is usually the home color, but there are teams like the lakers that wear yellow unless it's a sunday home game where they wear white. college football white is usually the away color, pro football and baseball varies cause they have various uniforms i think most teams have a combination of 3 jersey sets.

as for your NBA thing you are talking about, most teams have a theme for the season, such as the rockets who wore red for their home opener because the theme for this year is "Go Red" but will be going back to the classic white for the rest of the season unless it is requested to have like a red out in the arena and they wear red also. so it all depends on the franchise.

Home teams get to pick what color they wear right? And if a team wears white the other team has to wear a color that contrasts to white and vice versa right?

From my knowledge/experience, in basketball, the home team wears their light coloured jersey and the away team wears the dark colour. In hockey it's the opposite.

In football (soccer) it varies depending on what the other team is and what the chosen kit was.

For Hockey, it is due to the fact that in the past, the Home team wore the colour jersey but it also has to do with the fact todays 3rd jerseys are all dark colours and are meant to be worn at home. So the away team will always wear white as you will never see a 3rd jersey that is white.

I know in NCAA football, home team MUST wear a light based colored while away team wears a dark contrasting color.

This is way USC vs. UCLA can never had the red Trojan and the powder blue Bruin uniforms. dry.gif

Most of the time in the NBA the home team wears white. But there are rare occurances when a home team would wear the dark color and the road team wearing the light color. It gets confusing I find it when it is the NBA doing this.

Correct me if I'm wrong. In football do teams try to gain an advantage with the heat by wearing white at home?

I found the answer to my own question. In the NFL the home teams DO try to gain advantage with the heat by wearing white at home. So that the visiting team wears their darker colored jersey and sweat in the hot temperature.
