Oscar winner Charlize Theron will produce and star in an Americanized remake of Park Chan-wook's 2005 revenge flick Sympathy for Lady Vengeance.

Theron told Moviesblog.MTV.com that she only agreed to do the movie because Chan-wook asked her. "He made an almost perfect film [but] he came to me and said he really wanted us to do this. He wanted to see that story told in an American society," Theron said.

The Aeon Flux and In the Valley of Elah actress added, "If he wasn't so encouraging I don't think I could go through with it. We're intimidated almost beyond belief."

Theron will play the role based on the character of Lee Geum-ja in the Korean original, who was wrongly imprisoned and seeks bloody revenge upon her release.

According to Theron, the film was only in "the very, very early stages of development" and that no director had been hired yet.

Interesting how Korean films are being remade. Well at least Charlize Theron is good actress^^ I am curious to see how this project with turn out and who will be directing and, etc.

this actually sounds good, since chan wook will be overlooking it.

okay, I was terrified when reading the topic title, but I'm a bit more reassured seeing it's Charlize Theron AND park chan wook specificially asked for her to remake this. I just hope it will do the original film justice, and give recognition to the original. But overall, I'm pretty excited!

Charlize Theron is a wonderful choice. I always imagined Monica Belluci playing the role, but they both have similar vibes anyway.

Why so many remakes? Not that I'm against it, but I wish the U.S. move theaters would just show the originals.

Wow, another Park remake? Well at least he has some say in who he wants in it. She is a great actress, not to mention beautiful, I'm looking forward to how it turns out.
