More and more people are texting these days. Since I've never caught onto this craze (stupid fees cost me $10 one night), I would like to get a better idea of just how many people are texting, and for what purpose.
Thank you.

Texting is good for conveying quick messages when the other person might not be in a position to actually answer the phone or you can't discreetly talk. If I don't really need to have a full conversation and it's something like a change of plan or an "I'm here, where are you?" then texts work fine. They're also good when you want to have a casual convo back and forth with a friend when you're in class or at a library studying. You know, not that I would ever be texting when I'm supposed to be paying attention or studying, of course. >.> I usually call, though. I don't text for conversation much, just for short, practical messages.

I text ALL the time. I don't know why, it's easier.
I text in class a lot and at work so it's easy then talking on the phone.
Usually it more convenient to send message for directions or a short notice.
I also have unlimited, so I just use it since it's there ^^~

Since people have such a ridiculous amount of minutes, I just call if I need to find out where someone is or expect them to call me back after they have service again/ are capable of doing so. No point texting when I can call. If they aren't free to call then even if they text, you still have to wait for the call in the end anyway.

I pay 20 cents per text message, so I don't text unless I can't reach the person. XP I don't like leaving voicemails. Maybe it's me, but it takes such a long to create a whole sentence.

Texts are super cheap in Korea, so everyone does it. At first, I thought it was really weird to get really simple things like "good morning" or "what's up?" from friends, since at home, I only used texts to notify people of plans and stuff. I've definitely caught the bug at this point, so I text a LOT. Boyfriend, friends, students (to notify them of classes and such), etc. It's addicting.

my friends text me during work hours to chat. my boss text me all the time for random stuff because i work in a different location and she isnt always near a computer to IM me.
I also surf soompi during work hours and post on my phone so I dont get caught by the net nazis.

Actually, I have to text because in my apartment building I have very poor reception. If I get a phone call, I'll be lucky to carry a conversation for more than one minute before the call drops and I lose service temporarily. I just tell everyone I know to text me instead. I got the unlimited family plan. Otherwise, I'll call when I'm not home. Except my parents, they call regardless. But, I'll step out of the building just to return their call.

Im a txter!!! In NZ if you are on vodafone, they have this promo called text 2000, which you can text 2000 times for a month for only $10.00, texting is highly used here since calling is very very expensive, besides texting is more discreet.

^ That is a ridiculously good rate. I don't pay for texting services, so it's 20 cents/msg. It's quite annoying when people on AIM text me multiple times in a row, and then I have several dollars worth of fees.

I gotta agree. Texting is really practical for sending short messages when you don't have time to converse.

I noticed the whole surge on texting as well, but it seems to me to be more popular with the tweens and teens. I see my younger sister texting ALL the time. I don't remember anyone constantly texting when I was in highschool.
A friend of a friend got a hold of my number and attempted to have a full on conversation via text? Wtf? Ridiculous.

Txting to Indonesia and Singapore from Australia is much cheaper than calling i'd say

and since theres no last minute events or meetings , theres no need for a call to them
if its txting within my own city.. i'd text as reminders or small certain convos
the only time i'd call is if its , "right here , right now" situations where its a meetup and we need exact locations
and txting is too slow..

i usually txt friends when changing plans..
but with my students.. i'd rather not carry on a phone convo, so i txt..
plus in korea, students have more txts per month, so it's ezier for them to txt me.
but calling.. is still the best way to go.. so much easier!

I text because sometimes you can't really talk or because you don't have time to sit on the phone and chit chat the whole time. You can just have a conversation with someone at work when you're bored at your leisure.

Well I hate talking on the phone, mostly that's my reason.
Texts are quick, relay all the info you need, and you don't have to explain every little thing (mostly because you can't...LOL)
One of my best friends I text all day. I had to raise my limit because of our texting
We talk about everything, make plans for lunch between us & other friends.
The other reason, you can be quiet about what you want to say
my friend at work and I text when we want to say things others shouldn't hear, mostly about our boss. Hehehe

I had a friend who made 12,000 text in a month. Her boyfriend and her texted 24/7 to each other, no joke. She was always sitting in class texting, it was crazy.
But anyways, my professor last year preferred everyone to "text" her when we had an question. She loved it more than email. It was so strange, because I've never had a professor preferred texting as the best way to get a hold of them.

I never text. Call me crazy, but I try to limit my connection with technology as much as possible. I'm a bigger fan of face-to-face interaction. Besides, there's just so much more to life than just clicking away on your mouse or texting all day (dare I say this forum too).

Texting is annoying sometimes, but I do it if either I'm in class, work, or in the library, if the other person is in class, work, or in the library, or if it's just a quick message.
Then again, I also hate calling.
But, in general, I text more. I don't know why. I guess it's because I can text and still converse with the people that I'm currently with. I can't do that AS WELL if I'm actually talking on the phone. Plus, I have unlimited texts, so price isn't a big deal for me. I just have to be aware of who else has unlimited.

I seldom talk on the phone with friends anymore unless I need an instant response from them. Whether it's planning to play some ball, planning a BBQ, it's all "started" by a text.
I personally find it a lot more convenient.

I think texting is much less awkward when you're talking to someone you don't normally talk to.
Also, when it's something small that you need to say, it's not like you're giving that other person a 10 second call to tell them, when you can just text. And then it's awkward again.

I used to be like that. Then I got text messaging on my phone (previously it was disabled). whoo boy. And then I got unlimited...
Last month was something fun like 758 messages. Which I know is smallsauce, but for me (who is usually only around 400/month...) 758 is quite a lot.
*
I hate those "awkward" pauses on the phone when you're talking to someone; I have some friends that are really good and they'll be like, "Okay, I'll talk to you later then. Bye." And there's no awkwardness, but for some people... they just don't know when to hang up or leave the conversation.
It's generally easier when you're making plans; I don't know about other people, but whenever I'm on the phone "talking" to someone, I always have the strangest urge to actually
talk to someone. Not just a "Hey, I'm bored, whatcha doing?" thing, but an actual conversation. For those little snippets, texting just makes more sense. Plus, you can make arrangements with several people at a time (I still don't know how to use call waiting and putting people on hold and all that).
I call for a purpose, but I text aimlessly.

I text A LOT
I don't like to phone people. For one thing, I'm very shy, it's hard enough for me to start a conversation in real life but awkward silences over the phone just seem to make it all magnified for some reason. I don't like to impose either. Some things I can just get out better in text than in voice.
I don't need to worry about fees though. "Unlimited" texting with a bunch of other perks for only an extra $20 month on my already limited plan isn't bad at all. Woot! Rogers! =p
As for a cellPHONE being a waste...I never wanted one in the first place actually, I never liked cell phones and even now, I just get the minimum of what I need. I was moving out though and a land line would have been a hassle and expensive so I got a basic phone plan. All I needed it for was to ring my parent's house three times with them not answering and then calling me back a couple minutes later because they had a long distance plan and I didn't =p

totally agreed. i hate calling people. the only people i actually call and talk to on the phone is family. even with my brother, i have to text him. i can't talk more than a minute without the line being dead silent. if i'm stuck somewhere with car problems, i'll call my brother in law but if its to ask him about a simple question, i'd text. lol.

i think my friends and i are the few young people who hardly text. personally, i don't have a plan so it costs more to text. i get most of my communication done online. the only time i ever text is when somebody texts me and i can't get a hold of them back. i have to admit though, texting is so convenient at times because it's not doesn't demand your time and energy at that instant like a phone call does. you can respond now or later and it doesn't disturb people like a phone would.
