I'm heading off to university in the fall, but I have a bit of a dilemma - I absolutely LOVE eating rice everyday and can't imagine feeling full without it.
It sounds a bit crazy, but hey...it's the way I've been eating for all of my life!
How have you guys [who love rice] in college adapted? Have you gone gung-ho cold shoulder no rice, or have you brought in a rice cooker in your dorm (or snuck in, if those sort of electrical appliances aren't allowed)?
The whole Freshman 15 shebang sounds horrendous to me, and eating all of that greasy dining hall food won't satisfy my rice craving.
HELP!?

freshmen year, i brought a box of those microwaveable rice. Didn't really eat a lot of it though so I didn't get any this year.
I got used to not eating a lot of rice and if I do want some, I'll usually order Chinese with my friends. Sometimes they serve rice at my cafeteria so i eat some of that too.

I don't know who actually follows university policy on bringing only "legal" items on campus. Nobody checks your desk drawers or goes under your bed or actually searches your room etc even when they do inspect your dorm for fire hazards/during breaks.
Anyway, I'm still living on campus and I cook everyday cause we have a kitchen in our suite. I cannot stand the campus food. Other buildings also have kitchens in common areas but they are shared with 400 ish other people (but it isn't like anyone uses them even then). I actually had freshman -15 back when I ate campus food because I didn't know it tasted so bad.

I'm jealous of all of you guys with actual KITCHENS in your dorms.
I think next year it's purely the whole "room" aspect for freshman next year, so no kitchens and lots of cafeteria food.
I wonder how much rice I could eat with my rice cooker in a dorm next year. Hopefully I'll get a roomie who loves rice too so I won't look like a total moron eating it next year.

Actually, both of the dining halls at my college serve rice as an option at every dinner, and even usually choice of white or brown rice. Maybe it's because about half the students eating there are Asian?

I don't know. I also got a cheap rice cooker from my dad before I went off to school for my first year of uni, so sometimes I buy a bag of uncooked rice and some curry things to put over rice and just cook it myself for when I miss official mealtimes. I just do it in my room and use the microwave in the hall kitchenette. And like other people have said, I lost weight when I came to school both years instead of gaining it. I'm not even Asian, but I was used to eating a lot of rice at home because my family cooks Indian and Thai food a lot at home.

well here...we're allowed to bring microwaves, fridges and rice cookers into our dorms. Just not....maybe ovens or something? But first year i didn't bring a rice cooker and ate at the dorms all the time. They usually had rice anyways. Now I live in an apartment and just like you i LIVE ON RICE. lol so yeah =]
The freshmen 15 totally depends on each person - i actually know a lot of people that lost a lot of weight first year. I, on the other hand (haha =[ ) did not because we have late night and that has THE fattiest but yummiest foods ever!! So you just have to control your portions...yup yup.

My experience with college food is that it wasn't that greasy ... pretty nice actually. They had Asian food nights and rice a lot.
The thing was that we had a Chinese place on campus. We could just go there and buy some hot rice if we ever wanted some, lol.

=) I bring food to school whenever I get the chance to. I also loves home cooking. It's healthier and it saves you a lot of money. There is a microwave at all the dinning location on my campus so it makes it easier for people who choose to bring their own food.

i eat rice almost everyday!!!!
there are times when i eat rice for lunch and dinner both on the same day.

if you really love rice that much, i know i sure do, you'll probably miss it.
back home i'd eat rice with every meal of the day, so i bought myself a rice cooker.

I lived in the dorms my freshman year, so I only ate cafeteria food. It was quite depressing, as I've been so use to eating oriental food all my life. But I can't argue (cafeteria food wasn't so bad, though I prefer oriental food). But anyway, eating rice became a "once in a million" thing. The only time I was able to eat it was if I went home, or if my friends brought me some.
Anyway, I got an apartment last year. And it feels great to be eating rice again

i'm a freshman now and i've actually lost weight

so happehhh!! i haven't been this weight since freshman in hs.
ANYWAY, going back on topic, my mom gave me a big box of microwavable rice... it doesn't really taste right, but i eat that with 김 when i'm out of my frozen dinners. i'm not really a fan of korean food since i've been eating it for 17 years of my life.

My freshman year, my dorm didn't allow appliances but I snuck a rice cooker and a small toaster oven in anyways

There's no way I would have survived without them. The campus food was always so greasy to me, and besides, rice is cheaper and healthier. I go to a school where there's about 1% Asians and the "Asian" food that they do occasionally serve is your standard American-Chinese food, so I was happy to be able to eat rice whenever I chose to.

Would love to eat it on campus but it's just a little inconvenient. I just order chinese. I eat rice at dinner time with my family.

Hells yes, I eat rice pretty much everyday. I have a rice cooker and me and my roommate bring other little dishes and share and eat together. It's pretty convenient actually. You just cook the rice and microwave the food. I lived in a dorm my freshman year and I think we got a complaint about the smell of the food like once, and that's because my RA was a total b*tch. We weren't even cooking Asian food (it was spaghetti.) But still, you should be careful about certain kinds of dishes because they can smell up the whole hall. And this year, I'm at a little more lax dorm building and we eat like everything (kimchi, gook, soups, dwenjangjjigae, etc) and it doesn't smell in the hall.
I also opted not to get the meal plan (even though our dining halls are totally delicious) because it cost too much, but once in a while, my roommate and I ate out, and we ordered a lot of delivery food too when we got tired of Korean food.
Anyway... I ended up losing about 8lbs.. I'm not sure because of my diet or my crazy schedule, but still.
If you decided to get the meal plan, I think it's a good idea to bring a rice cooker to your dorm anyway, so just in case you get a little homesick, you can cook up something

The school i go to is italian dominated and the cafeteria tries to accomodate other races LOL sometimes there will be chinese food or like indian, mexican, etc but the rice they have is not the same :c even at chinese restaurant the steamed rice does not compare to the one i have at home :c but yeah i bought a mini rice cooker, but i have no rice LMFAO and appliances arent allowed so im like hiding it in my room LOL.

I still eat rice most of the week. We're not allowed to have ricecookers. But I found this microwaveable ricecooker and it basically works the same way but instead you just pop it into the microwave for 10-15 minutes.
