Hey Guys,

I decided to start a thread on the Vampire Diaries since the show has been offically picked up. This thread will be about the Vampire Diaries TV show but you can discuss the books if you want. There is another thread called 'L.J Smith' which I think is best suited to talk about the books. I say this because people who haven't read the books and want to watch the show don't want to have the storyline spoiled for them. Though from what I've seen and heard about this show, it's straying quite a bit from the books.

Here is a cast list and summary (criedts to wikipedia):

* Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev): She is compassionate and kind with a smart wit and timeless beauty. 17 years old, fresh-faced, with lovely features, she once swept through life with the ease of a popular, well-adjusted pretty girl, until she suffered a tragedy: her parents were killed in a car crash four months ago, and now she and her younger brother Jeremy live with their Aunt Jenna. Most of the time, Elena simply tries to get through the day with the support of her friends Bonnie and Caroline and her ex-boyfriend Matt, whom she’s known since she was a little kid. Elena’s life is brightened with the arrival of Stefan, the mysterious, polite and gorgeous new guy at school whose past and identity are shrouded in mystery.

* Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley): A “gloriously, amazingly, epic-ly beautiful young man, elegant and ageless,” he appears to be 17 or 18, but he’s really a 200-year-old vampire who has come to Mystic Falls in search of Elena. Stefan is poised, polite and reserved but easy to talk to, and intense sparks fly between him and Elena, who share the experience of having lost their parents.

* Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder): Early to mid 20s. Stefan’s brother, he’s a darkly handsome, strong, charming and smug vampire who can go from casual and playful to pure evil in less than a heartbeat. Damon’s interest in Elena unnerves Stefan. Though Damon hates small towns and considers them dull, it’s clear that he’s come to wreak havoc. Unlike Stefan, Damon has no qualms about killing humans.

* Jeremy Gilbert (Steven R. McQueen): 15 years old, he is Elena’s troubled but fundamentally decent little brother who has an “outcast cute, grunge punk” look. He’s good looking and a heartthrob waiting to happen. Over the summer, he started sleeping with an older girl, Vicki, and he’d like to continue their relationship now that school’s in session, but she ignores him in front of her jock boyfriend, Tyler. She’s perfectly happy to buy drugs off him, however. Jeremy is smoking a lot of pot and drinking too much in an effort to cope with the death of his parents four months ago, and he doesn’t take seriously his Aunt Jenna’s attempts to rein him in.

* Bonnie (Katerina Graham): 17 years old, bubbly, adorable, loyal and bighearted, she is Elena’s best friend who is developing her psychic abilities and senses that Stefan is dangerous. She also “sees” the black crow of death that seems to be following Elena.

* Jenna Moyer (Sara Canning): 29 years old, Elena and Jeremy’s aunt who took them in after the death of their parents, she is a brainy/sexy grad student who looks good in sweats and is hard at work on her thesis. She’s used to being the fun, cool aunt, and finds the transition to sudden parenting a bit daunting. Instead of packing school lunches, she hands her charges power bars and coffee. Jenna is trying hard and genuinely wants to be a good caretaker.

* Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig): 17 years old, he’s a handsome, all-American jock (Jeremy calls him a “golden retriever”) and Vicki’s brother. He has known Elena her whole life and used to be her boyfriend. He’d like to get back together, but he knows she needs time after the death of her parents and he’s gentle and thoughtful about giving her space. However, he can’t help but feel worried that the new guy, Stefan, is going to sweep Elena off her feet before he can re-establish his relationship with her.

* Caroline Truitt (Candice Accola): 17 years old, a beautiful but slightly manufactured-looking queen bee type, she is friends — and rivals — with Elena. Though she does care about Elena, Caroline is resentful of her relationship with Stefan. When Caroline gets tipsy at a party and throws herself at him, he inadvertently humiliates and angers her with a polite but firm rejection.

* Tyler Stratton (Michael Trevino): 18 years old, athletic, cocky, attractive, and a bit of a jerk, he’s an alpha male who demonstratively marks his territory (i.e. Vicki) every chance he gets, particularly in front of Jeremy. Tyler can’t resist needling Matt about the fact that Elena seems to be falling for the new guy, Stefan.

* Vicki Donovan (Kayla Ewell): 18 years old, trashy-hot, with low self-esteem, she is Matt’s sister who works as a waitress at the Mystic Grill and enjoys popping pills and smoking pot. She hooked up repeatedly with lowerclassman Jeremy over the summer, but now she pointedly ignores him whenever her boyfriend, Tyler, is around. Vicki doesn’t believe any guy wants her for anything other than her body, or even that they should, but her relationship with Jeremy seems to go deeper than that.

Personally I think this series is turning more twilight than vampire diaries. I'm not too impressed with the what I've seen and heard but I'll give it a go. The cast seems a little bit misplaced...

I'll put up cast pics and promos up, as things progress:

Here are some pics:

What do you guys think of this show form what you've heard and seen? Also are there any fans of the books out there? How do you feel about his show?

I know the author (L.J.Smith) isn't pleased with the direction of the show.
kathy
I'm a fan of the books (read them in like...middle school? haha so long ago)

...I don't know if i'm a fan of the show yet since it seems to be a LOT different from the books.
I don't remember reading about half of this drama from the books. Were there really all those drugs in the books? huh.gif

Okay, after seeing the trailer, I agree with you. It seems too Twilight ish >< isn't elena supposed to be a blond beauty too?
aznchic209
Hmm, I haven't seen the CW trailer for this show...which explains why I've never heard it of until I read your post! Ian Somerhalder is fcukin' SMEXY so you bet I'll tuned in! Hahaha...

I'm not familiar with the characters at all...but wouldn't you think the FEMALE LEAD is supposed to be really really gorgeous?? I don't really like the actress playing "Elena." She seems too average and I don't like her character on Degrassi: The Next Generation. LOL!
krnshort1
when is it going to come out on tv?
Sugarminuet
I heard of it,never read it before though.Would someone mind telling
me the summary of what it's about? ooh the movie seem cool too.when will it be out in theater? huh.gif
cherri82crystal
oalalal seeing as i love vampires i just might check this out ;p

CW release an article on it. If I'm not mistaken, they will be showing it this Fall 2009 on Thursdays before Supernatural (I think). CW decided to move Smallville to Fridays so the timeslot before Supernatural is empty so they probably either aired it before Supernatural or move Supernatural up to Smallville (old timeslot) and let Vampire Diaries take Supernatural timeslot but for now it still unconfirm on the timeslot all we know is the day it will aired is Thursday this coming Fall 2009

here is the article:
The CW sends 'Smallville' to Fridays

The CW is splitting Smallville and Supernatural next season, the network has confirmed.

The two genre series have formed a successful pairing on Thursday nights but Smallville will move to a less desirable 8pm slot on Fridays for its ninth - and most likely final - season.

Joining Supernatural on Thursdays is new drama The Vampire Diaries, starring Ian Somerhalder as one of two vampire brothers vying for the affections of a 17-year-old girl.

Melrose Place is being teamed with fellow remake 90210 on Tuesdays, while Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill are continuing in their Monday night slots. The network has neglected to pick up the proposed Gossip Girl spinoff, featuring Serena's mother, Lily Van Der Woodsen.

Wednesday night is becoming a fashion double, with America's Next Top Model leading in to new Mischa Barton-fronted supermodel drama The Beautiful Life.

New drama Parental Discretion Advised, about a girl in foster care who decides to become an emancipated minor, is being saved for midseason.

Notable axings include Everybody Hate Chris, Privileged, Reaper and The Game.

This was the first vampire romance novels I read and I was really excited when I heard they were making a TV series. But I just watched the promo and it looks like a really bad attempt at feeding off of the popularity of the Twilight movie franchise.

I guess I’ll have to see the first episode and hope that I’m wrong.
cerys
Oh fun. Vampires rolleyes.gif

Girl meets uber handsome, pheromones-exuding male vampire, falls in love etc etc...

Fun fun...

Okay sarcasm apart, please don't kill me.

I like those good 'ol vampire novels from the 18-19th century.

But it seems like vampires are becoming more mainstream, especially embodied in stories about teens.
delisho24
oh man
this attracted my eye
cuz i totally read the saga in like middle school/high school!
shweet
Ian Somaldher (spelling) is so hot
sbq
Ian Somerhalder looks terrible! It's like he lost his looks and the promo is terrible. Perhaps the series will be good! Haven't got much hope for this show, at the moment!
losborrachos
i will watch this show (it looks pretty cheesy) for ian somerhalder's cheekbones alone.

btw, curse the cw for axing their good shows and/or sending them to the graveyard slot. they must be high on crack.
YunChing
I love dis book! Just finished reading the first book.
Now heading to the 2nd book =)
Can't wait for the show to be released!
Honestly, I dun really like d guys playing Damon and Stefan.
I imagined them more ... more .. hmmm how do i put it?
For short, i expected something else. Something more than that. lol
gummonster
wow. the cast is extremely beautiful.
definitely waiting for this.
shadydoll
I cant wait to watch it! w00t.gif
it looks soo good
the trailer is cute

i dont like that other brother dry.gif

& yeah I agree Ian is looking pretty fugly
shinhbang
I really can't wait for this! I finished the books, and I didn't see this coming at all! I like the cast, but there's only one problem. The girl was supposed to be blond with blue eyes. But then it's all good. :]
sbq
My god I've watched more promos and seen the photos. This series is going to be completely different from the book. The focus has mainly been on Elena, Damon and Stefan. I would to see more Bonnie, Matt et al. I'm still pissed they got rid of Meredith!

shinhbang I love your Acheron signature. Reading J R Ward btw!
sbq
Ths show starts tonight! I have my reservations but the critics say its better than Twilight (Well to me anything's better than Twilight). Tell me what you think!

i read that they will add in Meredith but she will come in later in the season. the writers wanted to do something differently from the novels and due to demands of the fans they decided to add in Meredith but dunno when yet maybe even in Season 2 if it goes far happy.gif

I'm sorta happy that they didn't stick so close to the novels, if they do it sorta bored some people out since people already know wat will happen next. Making it unpredictable but base on the novels is good enough for me haha

man I'm sooo excited tonight too bad i'm swarm with hw but I did set it on record on my dvr. so probably watch it this weekend or after I'm done with my hw haha happy.gif the good thing for me is that ight after VD its supernatural biggrin.gif
bebexlove
Definitely can't wait to see this tonight. biggrin.gif

Hopefully it's good!
yunapark
So this show is being filmed in Atlanta, GA...and I totally swear I saw Ian Somerhalder at Starbucks....lol I mean who can't mistake those eyes and face!

But yeah, I'm watching it now...seems good~

Okay, I musnt lie.
Ive never read the books.

But I understand the feeling of the book and the movie or series being totally different.
I've seen it a million times over.

But to those who havent read the book it just looks like a really cool show.
Im going to read the books now though because it feels like i need more.

I JUST WATCHED THE FIRST EPISODE! whoot whoot
Um, Stephen is hawt.
Hopefully we will see more of emotion from him though.

But so far its pretty good. Lol
juhee
i had VERY low expectations for this and apart from the cheesy lines...
and the cliche of having the blond-pretty-trying-to-hard girl being jealous of the nice plain girl...
and the...mysterious fog...oh the mysterious fog T_T

i thought the show was alright...
i haven't read the books but the show was pretty much easy to follow...
and i have to say Stefan is growing on me...

one question though...
since vampires in this series not allowed to go through thresholds without being welcomed in
so, how did Damon get into Stefan's window???
res0nate
this pic is hilarious because it's a terrible 'shop job http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x45/Per...vdfallpromo.jpg

Anyway, decided to watch flip channels between this and opening season in the NFL; it's quite surprising. It ain't no True Blood, but I think I'd catch this as a lead-in to Fringe.
thermopyle
The contrast in quality between this and Supernatural is so apparent. I guess if you don't have HBO (or just internet illiterate), it's a decent/poor alternative to True Blood.
jaejoong<3
first episode today!! haha now i have to wait for it to be uploaded on youtube. i loved the books, but the tv show? eehhh i don't really know.

wasn't elena supposed to be blond? and she had a sister in the book, right? gah they did that for gossip girl too. -.-

and stefan and damon look... old. like, they could've at least picked slightly younger (and handsomer) actors. i really don't like nina dobrev either though ... maybe i won't be watching it...
cherri82crystal
kay so i heard about this and someone told me to read the books and watch the show, so i just finished reading the book one day ago LOL
anyways......they changed a hecka lot of stuff! kind of disappointing because i feel like they made it kind of twilightish by making stefan and elena more emo and with all the slow talking LOL >_> they changed elena a lot!
but damnnnn DAMON is REAL hot..i love bada$$ guys..and elena is really pretty too!
but i thought the first episode was really boring...i almost fell asleep...but it could also be because i was really tired in the first place...........
overall i feel like it's a bit 'medocureish/a bit poorly done' but it's decent i guess. i just think that the book gives you WAY more stuff to feed onLOL
if you guys liked twilight or teen vampire novels, i really suggest you check out the book smile.gif
greeenkiwi
Saw this tonight. It was... "okay, not great" just as I thought it would be. The first episode wasn't that exciting.
It really reminded me of a Twilight remix? Like high school, characters look similar, Stefan looks pained and emotionless like Edward, etc. lol. I didn't know this show was based off books, so can't compared the show to it.

There was too many confusing mysteries. I'll probably watch a couple more, but I don't see myself loving it in the future.
honeybeat44
^ agreed the first episode was really lagging we'll probably have to wait til the middle of the season for it to get good
lovely-disaster
Guys, don't bother wasting your time watching this. Go read the books! They are amazing. Ten trillion times better.

I totally recommend the books. I finish all 4 books within the summer and waiting for the others. Its pretty cheap now since they combine 2 books into one so it won't be pricey happy.gif

Throughout the novels, its mostly humans inviting in the vampire into the house so I think they change it up a bit where vampires entering vampire home don't really require an invitation. and if I'm not mistaken they're brothers and its their home so I guess that's why Damon can enter in freely

yeah Elena was suppose to be blond and she has a younger sister name margaret but from what I read the writers wanted to not base the whole tv show on the novel and decided to change some stuff because if they stick to close to the novel, people might get bored so they wanted to spice it up. I read that the reason why Elena has a brother instead of a younger sister is because her brother Jeremy is a addicted and when things mysteriously happen at Mystic Fall her brother is a suspect because of his pale white skin- they believe he's a vampire, etc

The first episode was okay not strong but I believe it will get better in the middle like most shows, it starts off slow and boring but gets really interested in the middle part and I have to say Stefan and Damon are totally HOT!
~creampuff~
I've never read the books so I can't judge by that. But I watched the first episode and it was alright. There wasn't much, and hopefully we'll see more soon.

I just ordered the books, so hopefully I'll be able to read those soon.

i just finished watching the pilot episode, yes, it was quite lagging, twilight kinda thing.
i think i have to see more of the episodes...
uhm....Damon turns INTO a crow. So. Why is there a Crow and a Damon in one place? o_o

I liked the first episode, but never read the books. This episode seems pretty much better than Twilight the movie, with the acting and all. Paul Wesley, is a freaking hottie, gahhh he is fine. I hope the season get better, and not keep me lagging like when i watched Twilight, goodness they left out the good parts in that movie. But anywhoo, this tv series is a definite watch for me. = )

hopefully the series gets better. im gonna miss my true blood after this week. i need another vampire show.

If I'm not mistaken, the writers change it up a bit. This is how I think they wanted to be like:
Damon has probably been invited in before or maybe because the boarding house belongs to the Salvatore family he's able to enter because he used to live there. They did change the scripted around. That other man that lives in the house is their relative on the Salvatore side so it sorta make sense how the house belongs to him and he can enter in and out freely

The writers never thought about adding Meredith in the tv series at all but due to fans demand, they decide to add her in but they wanted to add her in probably somewhere in the middle of the series to "spice" the storyline up a bit. But they are now confirmed that she will be appearing in this season (hopefully) but not any time soon yet

I was excited for this show but I was really disappointed. I've read all the books so I have a certain expectation about how it should all look. Personally, I think the script is terrible and slow, the script writer has a vocbulary of a third grader. But that's just my opinion, please don't take offense or get defensive. I'll have to watch at least one more episode before I decided whether to watch it or not.

I still think that True Blood is the best vampire TV show out there right now.

LJ Smith wrote a version of VD was more "explicit" but the publisher said it would be better if she tone it down for teens-to young adult range so it can get it more interesting and appealing to that age range. I think the writers for VD tv series intend to make the storyline different from True Blood. If you noticed, True Blood is targeting people ranging mostly 18 and up while VD is targeting people ranging 15 and up so that is why the script is written opposite from True Blood. They want to attract a certain age group so they wrote it completely different to make it suitable for younger teens to understand and grasp on it easier.

Just got done watching the Pilot. I got to say, the preview short clips was well put together and more interesting than the episode itself. The Pilot was very predictable. It's ok, I'll keep watching a couple more episodes in case it does change and get better. Otherwise, the actors aren't that bad.
