Im not a college student yet but like my sister came home from college for the weekend and like she looked kinda fatter. ..and like she only has like two more weeks left of her freshman year of colege. do u think the freshman 15 is real?
somebodyserious
check out this thread HERE! and yes Freshman 15 is true.
xthefirst
>< It's true. I know some people who gained the Freshman 15, and one specific person who dramatically changed because of it.
innisfree
uhm no.
i didn't gain 15lbs. in fact i lost 5lbs.
i don't exercise. i just eat healthy.
i think most people gain that 15lbs because they go out so much with their friends, since they no longer have anyone restricting them or having to worry about anyone yelling at them staying out. perhaps it's the freedom.
i'm personally already used to such freedom so uhh it was just the same as when i lived at home.
laris
it happens to some people but not everyone... you can change it depending on how you vary your eating habits upon entering college. plus, for some people gaining 15 lbs would be beneficial.
Cakdel
Its true in some cases but not all.
my sister lost weight when she went to college and so did her friend. I think its because she hand out more and went outside/shopping more.
well, it really depends on the person.
Makaveli
It's a case by case basis. It's not an absolute truth. I find that most people who turn into slobs when they live by themselves aka eat fast foods, and drink all the time catch the freshman 15 and maybe even the 30+. If you remain healthy and drink socially while avoiding garbage foods, i don't see the freshman 15 happening at all.
IATEYOU
For me it was true, unfortunately. But it doesn't happen to everyone haha.
Alcohol has a lot of calories and school food isn't always the healthiest if you don't make the effort to eat healthy!
sheart
not true for me.
our school did have a huge cafeteria/meal plan thing though, so i was always aware of what i ate.
a lot of the students that i know that had a meal plan at their school (or drank a lot) did gain some weight though..
sillycrayons
i had a meal plan and swiped in to for dinner/lunch where you can eat as much as you want. i gained 10 lb. >:[
screamxlove
It applies to some, not all. My one friend lost 10 pounds during freshman year while I gained 25 :(
Luckily, I lost it all -- plus 20 more, haahaha.
haneul
Didn't hold true for me, and none of my friends have gained it either - at least from what I can see.
Miyuki♥
My big brother was a freshman this year and he came back this summer and he is way bigger so yeah, he gained like 20 -30 pounds.
laris
remember.. some 15 lbs isn't all that bad. unless it's purely fat.
maharu.
I just finished my freshman year and actually, I'm down a pound or so from last year.

You only gain weight if you live in the dorms, eat all that junk food, and not exercise.
I live at home, only eat junk food sometimes now, and exercise occasionally so it never happened.
JJ no Baka
Not true for me. I actually lost more weight because I've been sick for the past year.

It really depends. I know that one of my guy friend gained almost 20 pounds since college started. But it was because he lived off junk food and sleep and more junk food. Couple of my other friends gained none. So it really depends.
jolie_x3
It's true sometimes. For instance, if you were like locked up when you were in high school, then you'd probably splurge on your freedom more (not saying this is for everyone). It was true for my friend at least. She went to college last year and I saw her like last month and saw that she gained weight (she gained 23 lbs).

For me, I think it'd be opposite. I'd probably eat healthier because my mom's actually the one that always tempts me with food happy.gif
twix0rz
Not true for me. I finished my freshmen year of college around the beginning of may and only gained 5 lbs max. That was because i had to eat a lot more Americanized food...bleh.
If you can control yourself and not stuff your face with fatty foods it should be easy to keep off. Usually people who gain the freshmen 15 will lose the weight pretty fast over break since they will be eating healthier food then dorm food.
xostephy
Wasn't true for me or my friends lol. I finished my freshman year in april and I'm down 5 lbs from last year. It really depends on your eating habits. If you eat a lot of dorm food or fast food from the campus you might gain some weight.
Subways
AHAHAHAHAHAA 15?!
more like 30 for me
to be honest when I moved out I ate out a lot drank a lot and I was living on campus residence so I ate at the caf which had the most fattening food
I ate about 10 chocolate bars a day during exams wink.gif
not just me tho everyone i knew got fat except those super genetically gifted
bona fide*
I gained so much weight during my freshman AND sophomore year because not only did I eat out at fast food places/restaurants A LOT but I also didn't bother to exercise. =/ I'm using this summer to shed the pounds though. smile.gif
Hax
I gained 15 lb during my first year in college. All you can eat meant I would eat till I felt like bursting, haha.
aggiesbaby
I think it's true, but still depends on the person. There's always exceptions tongue.gif

I totally gained the freshmen 15 my first year of college and was close to 130 pounds by the time I moved out of the dorms. When I came home for the summer, my mom totally saw the major weight change and gave the "speech". And really, I never lost it until AFTER I graduated from college. I'm now back to the weight I was BEFORE I started college- 113- and I feel good! I had to buy new clothes because NOTHING fit after I went back to my original weight.
Applee
It all depends. I think I "should've" gained weight from all the extra drinking, but I didn't eat that much because I thought all the food was gross. So I guess it kind of balanced out and I stayed about the same weight. But of course, that was really unhealthy.
hammy_chan
i think it depends on the person, and their lifestyle during their school year smile.gif
i know people who have lost weight and people who have gained weight
Cheri.B*
Just take care of yourself and you're good to go.
You shouldn't let these kind of things scare you.
The only person that can control you is you.
jinnyblue
yes it is true! =P You will hear your friends complain about gaining weight throughout the year. a lot of universities require the freshmen who dorm to get a meal plan. and our dining hall serves carb and fat enriched foods all the time!!! not to mention its all you can eat X.x

i stayed the same weight but thats cuz i never went to the dining hall and used my meal plan for on-the-go sandwiches and stuff o.o that's probably a good way to avoid temptation =) it would be nice to be one of those ppl who got the NEGATIVE freshman fifteen though, but i don't think i can pull constant all nighters and skipping meals that my friends who lost weight do.
sugarlessgirl
people dont realize it but alcohol has a lot of calories. im not saying your sister drank, because i dont know her, but a lot of kids i knew probably gained because of alcohol. and like my roommate complained about gaining weight but it was because she was always snacking on something in addition to three meals a day and her dad would stop by on business trips and buy her tonnes of groceries so...yeah.

as for me i lost weight (about 10 lbs ish). i didnt find the school food all that appetizing so i ate salads all the time and i didn't feel like cooking anything in the dorms, plus i started working out more smile.gif and i dont drink alcohol so yeah smile.gif people just need to be more aware of their bodies and realize that you are what you eat; what goes in doesnt just magically disappear.
sprinkle_kitty
I actually lost weight during my freshman year O_o
And I usually went to ihop at night or eat ramen in the middle of the night
tetsushi
Think I lost 12 lb in my freshmen year, started studying for once in my life really got to me...
Elysia
^ i'm opposite, i gained 12 lbs my freshman year... still losing =[

studying for the first time in my life too... had to eat candy/chips/coffee to keep myself awake LOL
myxo
I lost 10+ pounds my freshmen year. Living away from home, surviving off of mac n cheese, ramen, and pop tarts did my body no good! I was a healthy 110 and dropped to 100ish. I gained weight when I went home for the summer, and bounced back to 105. After my sophomore year, I dropped down to a depressing 93lb. I'm somewhere around 95ish right now, and I'm near the end of my third year. I don't live off of mac n cheese anymore, more like fast food and restaurants now, but I probably only eat twice a day (one meal less than what I normally eat in the summer).
kellykim10
it was not true for me and i lived alone in my own apartment and it seemed like i lost weight rather than gaining ^^
but i think it could be true for the majority of people hehe
sallyparadise
it is definitely dependent on the person. living at college is like a different lifestyle. I just finished my freshman year and I gained maybe 8-12 pounds. I started off around 108, came home around 118. alcohol + late nights + fast food everywhere! A few of my few friends gained more than that. But some also toned up because my school has a great gym and if you are dedicated, weight gain can be avoided!
Christinaisweird
sometimes, depends on how well you handle all the workload.
You might even lose weight, if you're lucky >.>
jawa
One of the reasons people gain a lot of weight when they enter into college because they drink a lot of alcohol, which has a lot of calories.
CryingIvy

I gained 5lbs.

Not that bad, mostly from drinking and late night snack eating because of stress. However, my campus is huge so I also walked a lot which offsetted the weight gain. I know people who lost a ton of weight and I know people who gained weight. Depends on how you can control yourself, but it's really not that bad.

WHY do people gain wait?

You stay out late, no parents to tell you what to do or provide you with what to eat. Fast food is everywhere and most universities have meal plans (which is what freshmen stick to who live in dorms) that offer all-you-can eat cafeteria food for really low rates (mine was all you can eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner for less than $4).

You just have to control yo self. lol.
system_chaos
Hahaha I knew not drinking would do me some good. laugh.gif

I also lost weight in University. I was a lot chubbier in Highschool.
j1youngxj3
yes it's real. it happened to me. =[
opalineskies

gaah my nightmare, thankfully i didn't gain the full 15
but i did gain about 3-5 lbs that i must work off this summer.
dining common food does you in since it comes included with
the dorm package all you can eat = bad. the food isn't even
that good so you eat more to try and satisfy yourself XD.
i ate too much ice cream...and late night snacking as well as
snacking while studying.
madaristocrat
Like what other people said, it really depends. Each person is different and you may gain/lose depending on where you go to school. I go to NYU so I actually lost about 10 lbs from all of the walking I do around the city. Even though it's a pain walking to class I guess it's good cause it keeps me in shape without ever stepping foot in a gym. XD
joie.de.vivre
i hope the freshman 15 *isn't* a myth D:...
screamxlove
IMO, I think y'all have to worry more about the

JUNIOR 30.

...or well.. that's what my friends told me >.>
Yuenie
I wouldn't think it's a myth because it is unbelievably easy to gain weight from eating college food. Why? Because there is no one to stop you from eating unhealthily; you only have yourself to rely on making the right food choices. And the foods provided in college cafeterias really don't help. More than often, there's just salad/wrap bar, sandwich station, and fatty/greasy food station.

But to avoid it, just make sure you don't eat greasy/fatty foods every meal and make sure to exercise.
iyagi
Haha, I think going off to college would actually be BETTER for me >__>
I don't eat alot, nor do I NEED to eat alot. I eat when I'm hungry, and I don't deprive myself of anything. But my parents are always force-feeding me or telling me to eat when I'm full and UGH. It just irks me D: I hate it when people try to control my eating patterns.

My friend was lucky, and had the reverse of the Freshman 15 xD YEAY.
tellmelove
Not really its because
she didnt take care of her self dry.gif

lol i am trying to stay healthy now lol
and i try not to get fat
dudeilovefood
yeah, like what the others said, it really has to do with the fact that you're moving into a dorm, maybe, and you're earning this new fresh freedom. without having the constant nagging of parents you can totally eat like ANYTHING. so yeah !
JacksonC
Not a myth at all, some people are just lazy to watch what they eat and exercise. Heavy drinking can also contribute to weight gain, some of my friends during freshmen year got fat because all they do is drink and sleep.
Tinateukbum
It wasnt a myth for me. Even though they taught us in senior year on 'how to avoid the Freshman15,' it happened to me.
in the beginning, i was good, but then winter came & idk...it just packed on.
I had the meal plans & well...i finished the food cuz i feel bad if food goes to waste lol >< plus they had good food lol.
plus i had night classes & late night events [not parties] to attend & i had late dinners which were digornios pizza, talk about gluttonous><
it's my fault i slacked around & didn't exercise, i only walked, but not enough.
sakuradollie
It varies from person to person. ohmy.gif I actually gained a little bit because I kept going out to eat with my friends. Pizza,Mcdonalds,Burger King, Dunkin Donuts...I'm not a fast food person but when it comes to friends and food I give in!! By spring semester of freshman year, I started working out. My other friends kept getting bigger and bigger by the week lol! So no it's no myth, it happens if you don't watch what you eat.
