I saw a few other threads, but none for Artists going to school.

I am going into my second year at Ringling College of Art and Design as an Illustration major. I will be heading towards book/comic cover, video game, card, and fantasy art. So, drop your questions here, or just stop by to chat.

I know someone going to Ringling. I'm pretty sure it's Ringling.

I heard from a friend that he didn't like it much. But i think he changed his mind.

I hope you enjoy your time there! If I didn't choose my current major, i'd probably do some sort of art.

Yeah, you really have to put your heart and soul in it. I love the school though.

Nice, MICA. What majors interest you?

Just to give people a heads up on Ringling.
I am not too familiar with all of our majors, but I know:

Computer Animation: We are 4th in the world 1st in the country, which is based on animation competitions.

Illustration: This year we took 25% of the spots for Society of Illustrators competition, double any other school. (We increase the number every year)

Interior Design: 99% Hire Rate

I'm not attending a specialized school for art, however I am studying illustration/animation at San Jose State in California. We have a really great art program with excellent instructors and friendly students. I'm going on my sixth year at state and hoping to graduate next year. As far as the future, I'd really like to do concept work for films or games. Anyways, nice to meet yall and stay busy during the summer wink.gif

Nice, concept art field is a tough one to get into right now. It has kind of become a popular thing since conceptart.org. My friend Dan just graduated (http://danieladrover.carbonmade.com/) and everyone is telling him he needs experience in the game industry before they will hire him.

Honestly, it's nice to hear some non-specialized colleges have good art programs, because the specialized schools have killer costs.

Also: nice painting, I like that a lot. Vaguely reminds me of Jon Foster.

Ringling, that's cool! I see some really good art coming out of that school smile.gif

Next year I'm going to Laguna College of Art & Design, I'm going to study animation- very excited about it!

Nice, why did you choose Laguna? I have never heard of that school.

It's a very small school, 350 students, so there is lots of one-on-one attention from the professors, which was something I really wanted. The location is great, it's in a wooded canyon just a mile away from the beach.
Also, it's perfect distance from my family, not too far but not too close!
Aaaand, they gave me a scholarship cool.gif

I attend Syracuse for Interior Design. It was either Pratt or Syracuse but I chose the latter for the whole university campus experience and I planned on transferring over to the Architectural school (backed out). So far I don't know if I should have chosen Pratt instead. It seems like Syracuse isn't strong in Interior Design and its making me nervous about my future.

OHH finally an Art Thread!
i used to be a Sequential Art/Cartooning/Comic Book Drawing (they're all the same depending on how/what college names it) major,
practically a Manga-ka.
but i switched to Graphic Design so i could incorporate Drawing, Photography and Photoshop all in one.
I did plan on going to SCAD, got accepted there but never went 'cos money was a huge issue,
then I thought of transferring to SVA, but decided to just stick in my own state college,
eh we'll see how things work out for me.

Well, played. Many students at Ringling are here after switching from SCAD. Awesome though, nothing wrong with a state college, just work hard. Our graphic designers spend very long nights in the labs, which are open 24 hours for good reason.

i'm interested in black and white film photography(takin it old school tongue.gif) ...took a course last year in hs...

i'm trying to find a college that has photography and biology...

Woo~ an Art & Design Thread!!

I'm currently in my second year at Eastern Michigan University majoring in Graphic Design.
I chose GD lul GD = gdragon too because I LOOOVE drawing/photoshop/photography/making cool stuff. ;D
I plan on transferring to College for Creative Studies up here in Detroit!!! (don't worry, D-town maybe the most dangerous cities, but it's located in the nice part of it.)

I want to transfer because, well, the art program at EMU is GREAT if you want to become an Art Teacher... not ferr meh.

Then I suggest some kind of university. I don't really know much about other states, but University of Michigan has a pretty good art program and it's got a great science program.

Lol, it's hard to get a job right now period. Good news is it's a great time to go to school, because the world should recover by the time you are out. Art careers tend to be challenging to get, but are also very rewarding.

If you read, "A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future" he argues that in the near future designers and artists will be extremely vital.

I am going to school for illustration. It's a VERY hard path, but everyone is only given one life so I am going to use that one life to chase my dreams :] and I suggest the same for everyone.

I was totally waiting for a thread like this! Im a junior in high school and Im preparing my portfolio right now, which is due around december-ish. I really want to major in fine arts! What colleges have a good fine arts program? I really want to go to Pratt.

Hey, I'm going to be a first-year student at OCAD for Illustration. Any advice/experience/tips for me? =D

And for those of you in the States, how on earth do you manage the financial matters? I applied to Pratt, got accepted, and ultimately had to decline the offer because of the $$$. In addition, it's even more expensive for us international students because we don't get any financial aid from the government or school, plus all the paperwork/documents for a visa.

Going to the Ontario College of Art and Design in September. I originally wanted to go into painting/drawing, but now I'm edging towards illustration/graphic design. So unsure.... =/

I've been looking for an A&D thread.
Finally found one!

I'm graduating probably this year or next from high school and now thinking about what to take..
and going to an arts school is one of my few choices.. ( :

So my question is, do I have to be skilled in traditional drawing to enter an Arts School?
I do photoshop a lot but I don't draw. ) : Pencils don't work with me well. It sucks, I should've practiced before.
But I am interested in taking up some course related to Graphic Designing and willing to learn a lot.

It helps being able to draw, but many successful graphic designers can't draw.

I am attending Newbury College in Brookline, MA as a Commercial and Advertisement Art major this fall. I'm working with an Admissions Officer at Mass. Art to transfer there ASAP once I get a good college GPA and obtain college credits. She really wanted me to attend but I had such a low HS GPA sad.gif It was honestly one of the saddest things to hear that your art is good enough, but your GPA wasn't.

Background Info: When I was 15, I interned at Artists For Humanity and two months later become a paid Photographer. I'm now almost 19 and I'm still working there and I've gotten to do lots of commissioned commercial work as well as Fine Arts for big name and high end clients. I do film as well as digital photography smile.gif I've also been doing Graphic Design since I was 12 lol. My parents used to lock me in the house haha.

Mass. Art, Art Institute of Boston, etc.

It's all situational. If you're amazing at art, determined, hard working and competitive then getting a job with an art degree would be a hell of a lot easier.

drawing is a good skill to have, but like someone replied earlier, it's not required. of course, you'll probably take drawing classes to help with observation and whatnot. my drawing class had a handful of students who couldn't draw "realistic" but balanced it out with good design skills (and concepts). my typography teacher says that if you can't draw, just hire someone. lol.

don't know any other people except for 1 other soompier who goes here.

Was wondering when I find a thread for art student.

I graduated from Art Institute of Vancouver - Game Arts program.
Now I'm heading back to school to SFU or Capilan University for their Traditional Art program.

Some of your sketches are really nice Charles. How many years you have left at Ringling College?

That is so true, but hey, they ask that for any position when your applying in the game industry, well... for well known company that is. Smaller company expect that you are diverse from all range (animation-art-programmer)

Have to agree that those paintings are quite nice.

Bestest luck on all of us.

Thanks, I still have 3 years left at Ringling, such a LONG way to go. Hopefully the economy takes a turn for the better while I am going to school.

Ah, best of luck to you as well. Also, make sure you apply for EVERY company... many people working for top game companies started off with game boy games. Sounds like a good idea to get that traditional up there too. Keep practicing your modeling skills!
