i'm just wondering, does anyone here go to de anza? i'm going to go there starting this fall, and i'd like to know more about the college such the atmosphere, students and transfer programs. sweatingbullets.gif

and maybe i could bump into one of the students here randomly someday? haha XD

edit: does anyone know the quickest bus route/shortcut from the campus or near the campus to the evergreen area in san jose? i checked the vta schedules and the most straightforward routes take 2 hours minimum -__-

I'll be going to De Anza this summer=]
I'm going to be taking the Orientation and some other classes(haven't decided yet)
you can learn about the transfers(from De Anza to UCs) from the orientation. I suggest you take it during the summer(they still have spots for August 24 - 27)
The summer classes for the orientation are much shorter than the ones in the fall(summer = 1 week; fall = 6 weeks)

Haha. De Anza is like down the street from my HS, MVHS. [I FINALLY GRADUATED smile.gif]
Anyways.
The college itself is quite fun actually. You'll see lots of Asians for sure. But there lots
of people from other ethnic backgrounds too so yeah don't worry about diversity.
You'll meet lots of people from overseas if you are a full-fledged student. I heard that
lots of Asians come to DA to study. Apparently it is one of the best community colleges?

The atmosphere of DA actually depends on who you hang out with when you're there.
I was there during my HS years to get some extra college credits/ to "expand my horizons"
so me and my friends were dubbed the "over-achieving" HS kids but there were some really
cool people I met there :] Oh yeah. PICK YOUR PROFESSORS WISELY!!!! Use ratemyprofessor.com
it's actually quite accurate.
some are really nice, helpful and just overall cool but...some are just trash. for example,
my friend got an intern at NASA by her professor's reference. I had a professor who didn't show up
75% of the time and then just out of no where decided to canceled the class like 4 weeks into the class sleep.gif''

regarding transfers,
There are certain transfer programs you can sign up for. You'll have to ask the counselor. Each college
that accepts transfers from DA has different requirements. Like there used to be one for UCLA and UCSD,
I don't know if they are around anymore, but anyways their requirements were very different. Of course,
UCLA had a few more required courses. If you're going to transfer, you can't slack off. Its getting quite
competitive now.

mm. okay i hope that was somewhat helpful. Sorry if it didn't :\

I'm starting a summer class on the 29th too :] (waitlisted but...whatever) YOGA happy.gif anyone with me? hehe
oh yeah, that's another thing, at De Anza, if you're within #10 in the waiting list, you'll probably get in the class
[unless the class is REALLY popular like PSYCH] so go to the class on the first day. When the professor asks those
wait-listed to get their add#s, RUSH to the front tongue.gif

Classes start tomorrow! Lets explore, everyone~~

I'm taking a 7:30am spanish class and a 1pm guitar class for the summer for jollies. If there is a class you want at De Anza but the waitlist is long, I usually go to Foothill since it's only a few exits away (campus is lovely).
xo_sugar_ox
cool more people! biggrin.gif
anyone here have transfer plans yet? hehe
g-yo
Ohh I'm taking a summer class there. It's called Global Issues and Perspectives - hopefully enough people enrolled cause it seems like a not-taken-a-lot class ohmy.gif I don't want it to be cancelled D:

DA is apparently the second best CC? Like second best transfers. But imo Foothill has the best transfer program (into UCLA's honor's program and also Cornell's engineering program - though, technically Ivies aren't the best places to go to in terms of anything other than the liberal arts)

There are mostly asians, and unless you make some good friends there during class it'll be hard to really connect with others much (though my experience isn't really accurate, I was never a full-time student there).

Bumping the page because i need help xD
On De Anza's website it says that people taking COUN101(orientation) has to send their official transcript to De Anza before taking the class(didn't know about it so i never sent my transcript)
So here's my question: Can De Anza just call my school or the district and get it faxed over or does my school have to send my official transcript over?
Because I'm pretty sure my school's closed and i've never been to the school district(I graduated from American High in fremont)

i think you have to go to your school to get them to send your transcript o.o but since your school is closed maybe you could ask de anza to call your school for your transcript

o_O wtf you needed to send offical transcript for orientation?! o_O I never did that ohmy.gif what's the point of that... wait maybe it's for the placement for your English and math classes .. it maybe that... because I did the placement tests and didn't have to do the transcript thing..

anyways ohmy.gif De Anza is so diverse, there's a BUNCH of forgien exchange students and not just from Asia I mean Ethiopia, Russia, and other places. (although you mostly get to see the exchange student during the day)

Lots of ppl go to De Anza because of it's GREAT TRANSFER program smile.gif

but yeah I did take summer classes but i'm going to take classes in fall and that would be beginning of my 2nd year smile.gif
fakemoomoo
De Anza is a great school! A lot of my friends who transferred to UCLA went there, and I did a quarter there recently. They're administration is seriously amazing haha. Take advantage of the guarantee transfers, but don't depend on them and slack off because competition is tight nowadays.

As for the atmosphere, the science building looks new (I've never been in them) and they're always adding stuff and doing construction. It's in Cupertino so it's pretty safe and a nice neighborhood. There are a lot of Asians, and more who don't speak English than those who do haha. When parking in the garages, just beware because a lot of the cars that drive through have those huge stupid spoilers that are loud and make car alarms go off...I hope yours isn't sensitive hahahaha.

Anyway, have fun!
DV04
De Anza is a great community college and it is considered one of the top community colleges in the U.S. and there are a ton of international students, mainly Asian. That is because De Anza gets most of their money since international students pay around $1,000 - $2,000 a QUARTER. A Japanese student in my class told me that his parents gives him about $50,000 to live off for a year. Make sure you take Counseling 100 because all your questions will be answered by signing up for it. Beware of driving in either Stelling or Flint garage because there are a lot of cocky drivers in STi's, RSX's, Lancer Evo's, G35's, etc who like to drive crazy in and out of the garage (from my personal experiences). Sadly, with the bad economy and the huge boost of population in community colleges, it will be hard to get all the classes you want, which means you'll be at De Anza for at least 3 years max unless you're willing to drive between different schools to get more classes.

On the De Anza website for COUN101 it said to send in transcripts before the classes started(I'm just being paranoid right now lol xD)
But anyways thanks.
xo_sugar_ox -- i went to the school district(in my area) and asked them to mail it to De Anza's Admissions and Records Office

I'm taking summer classes at De Anza right now. It's only my first time attending De Anza but I'm loving the experience. Both of my teachers are AMAZING. If you guys take Accounting 1A, take it with Terrance Brown. And for Business 18 (Business Law), take it with Ron Goularte. and I really love the diversity, not just in ethnicities, but the fact that there are people of all ages.

I wish I did two years of CC and transferred, instead of diving head first into a UC before making sure it was right for me.

woo! de anzaa! i just graduated and im going there this fall. i instantly loved the campus when i went there for open house. my orientation is next week (aug 3-6) and i cant wait to see how that goes. the student population at de anza is very young compared to west valleys'. when i took summer classes at west valley, at least half the class was twice my age. at de anza, it looked like there was a buncha high schoolers running around.
smileyface(:
For the orientation, are they supposed to e-mail you the week before telling you where it is?
Because i haven't gotten anything from De Anza yet and my orientation's supposed to be next week.
And since it's not a fall class i can't check it online=\

There's usually an announcement on the bookstore website: http://books.deanza.edu/home.aspx
i've been checking everyday so i can order online before my internet gets disconnected this week (changing ISPs) >_<

i'm planning to transfer to SJSU and let's just say it's my last year at De Anza laugh.gif
Dang0
I'm headed to De Anza this fall! biggrin.gif

One thing I have to say though is classes fill FASTTT. Even with an early-ish orientation and an early registration date, a lot of the classes I wanted were full. It took a pretty long time trying to get classes with decent professors (all the "good" ones according to ratemyprofessor.com were already full) and making sure there were no time conflicts. I like how my schedule turned out overall, but I'm nervous about how well I'll do in the classes. sad.gif

Oh and I have a question: How many units are you guys planning on taking this quarter? I'm at 14 units right now, and I don't know if I want to take more... =/
xo_sugar_ox
^I'm taking about 16 units. The counselors said if you're a first time student then you should take around 12-15 max. so the heavy load of work doesn't hit you like a ton of bricks xD

Hmm, okay. I dunno, I'm really tempted for a bunch of different reasons. Sigh, my indecisiveness. Thanks for the input! xD
Any more opinions would be appreciated too.
Searesrayne
I say buy your books online unless you NEED it that first week/2nd week.. then buy it from D.A bookstore O yeah there's another cheaper bookstore you can go to that's across D.A I forgot it's name but it's at the shopping center where jamba juice, simply thai restraurant and quickly are at... The prices at the D.A can be a rip off!

O yeah don't buy your book before the class UNLESS YOU KNOW FOR SURE... xD teachers can end up changing their minds or a lot of teachers use a different book lol. (except the sciences and math books they're all the same but the edition may be different)

If you passed up to English 1A and taking it this fall.. take up to only12-15 credits.. if you didnt' you can take up to 19 xD which I did xD I was the lvl lower for english 1A(took too english classes).. and i took math stats, japanese 1, and I did fine lol and i'm lazy >_> dry.gif
Dang0
^Ahh, thanks. Yeah, I'm in EWRT1A and I really really hate English, so I guess sticking between 14 and 16 units sounds safer. Thanks for the feedback!
lilangelover
ooohh finally a DA thread. i was thinking of making one last year but i got lazy. I'm actually a 2nd year at DeAnza.:] getting ready to apply for transfer in the fall.

If you're planning to transfer your best friends will be IGETC and assist.org :]. what i did was line up my major and GE courses together. so i can kill two birds with one stone. so i will be done with all my ge's after this fall quarter and almost done with my major courses.

atmosphere at DA depends on WHO YOU ARE and what you're willing to do. it's pretty much like high school. except a little harder that all your friends will have different schedules from you so it's harder to meet up. alot of my high school friends actually DID NOT make any new friends when we went to DA. the only friends they made were the friends i introduced them to.

I'm actually pretty involved. i joined sports and club. and currently a club officer. i was also planning to run for DASB senator but didn't have time. but i suggest that if you want to make your stay at DA enjoyable join clubs and make new friends.

and YES there is A LOT of international students. most of them business majors tongue.gif or Bio majors if you're a bio major good luck getting your classes.

all I can think of is taking 54 to West Valley and then taking 37 and take it to the end which is capitol.. and I know there's another bus that goes down that road but I'm not sure of the number I think it's 70 .. it goes to great mall, but it goes thru eastridge it's kinda in the evergreen area xD ohmy.gif

well since this is the San Jose public transportation there is no real quick transportation. it will take about 2hrs no matter what. you can take the 23 bus route. than it'll take you to the Alum Rock Transit center and you can take the 22 i believe? towards eastridge mall and take the 39 back up quimby road and around the evergreen area. you don't have to take the bus to west valley because it's the opposite direction. if you take the 23 it'll be a straight line.

http://511.org/

use 511.org if you need more help.

o yeah the bus 23 xD... I took those buses it takes about the same time even the west valley one xD and no it doesn't go the opposite direction ...completely LOL

I go to De Anza. D:
I HATEHATEHATE PARKING THERE.

But transferring from there to the school you want is so much better than going to some other comm. college..
But i also hate the fact that I'm forced to wake up at 5AM to register for the classes I need/want..
And even THEN, I'm STILL not guaranteed I can get them, because 80% of the rest of the school is up at 5AM too, and then the server crashes -__-
I suggest you get on the phone registration AND online reg. at the same time. ;___;

Starting Fall Quarter, this will be my 2nd year (:
FRANCiiS
This is going to be my first year in college, and honestly I'm pretty scared.. haha.

I decided to register for the Fall 2009 term, because of the good things I've heard &read about their transfer programs. Anyways, long story short I just moved to the area and sadly/unfortunately I don't know anyone at all over here... sad.gif

I'm freaking out haha, I've been reading a lot about how impossibly hard it is to make new friends here, since everyone's so caught up on their own studies and etc.. Maybe I'm just overthinking this, but I still want to hear your guy's opinions.
hahah thanks guys!
xo_sugar_ox
^ i heard it's really hard to make friends unfortunately sad.gif
but if you join clubs and activities then you will probably meet more people, or you can just talk more to people in your classes biggrin.gif

yeah registrations been opened for a while now. But the thing is, a lot of classes at de anza are full=\
I'm only taking three classes this quarter, and one of my classes is an online class. x__x

*quick edit*
How much are the yearly parking permits?
DV04
A 1 year parking permit is $90 (if you buy it at the start of summer school), but around $70 - $75 if you buy it a week before fall quarter. It can be cheaper if you qualify for BOG (check De Anza's site for more info).

As for making friends, it depends on what type of person you are. Sadly, most people just go to CC to finish their G.E. and transfer ASAP. I mean the student body don't even care about the school because about 900 / 30000+ students actually voted in that DASB election during spring. So it's true what they say about CC, "it's like high school without the social part", but some of the classes at CC are actually hard...
Searesrayne
I'd say just talk to your classmates smile.gif to meet new ppl.. uit's not hard.. you just need to put somewhat of an effort... I'm mean you won't make friends if you just sit in class like drone.. gotta talk to ppl xD even try to form study groups >D

YEAH i park at flint too biggrin.gif. it's also easier to leave since the freeway exit is there too. well the reason you dont have registration for right away is because registration is not based on how many years you've been at deanza but on how many UNITS you have. and also there are a free ways you can get early registration is by being in sports, EOPS,work for the school, or DASB. i believe international and ESL students also get priority too but not sure. so the more classes you take and pass them the chances of you getting earlier registration is better. i've been getting early registration for the whole year last year because i was in sports :].

like i said earlier it just depends on who you are and how much effort you're willing to put into making friends. yes it is hard to make friends at deanza because everyone has other things to worry about too. so everyone gets caught up. but i've been able to make lots of friends last year because i joined both sports and volunteer clubs. so if you want to make friends i suggest joining a club if you dont want to do sports.

O yeah yeah i know registration is based on units xD I kinda assumed the longer you've been there u would have been accumulated more units... but then again now I think about there are ppl that just take 3-4 units a quarter XD
