Honestly, I can forgive the occasional typo or some breaking some confusing/tricky rules, but there are just some common mistakes that really bother me. It really makes me wonder if anyone takes that person seriously. For example, I hate when people use the word "mines" when they really mean "mine"! Ugh! I also hate when people spell "definitely" with an a, "definately." It's not a word. Also, in general, I dislike "text speak," U instead of you, r instead of are, etc.
What are some of your grammar/spelling pet peeves?
HERMIT
Jul 2 2009, 12:08 PM
No kidding. Like when people confuse synonyms and choose the wrong word in context or fail to recognize that the words their using are supposed to be contractions. So really, I totally here what your saying.

Totally agree... I hate how people spell asian like azn... man, that annoys me.

I've also received "scolding" emails from professors with really bad grammar or spelling mistakes... once, it came from a professor who was a linguistic/reading specialist.

Oh boy... I have a lot of these. I make a habit of correcting myself when sending texts to my bf and he tends to think that I do it because I think people will think less of me for using the incorrect word. Yeah, well I don't like text speak either. It really irks me when I see people confuse "their" and "they're" and "there". Honestly though, I think the thing that irks me the most would have to be a lack of reading comprehension skills. Atleast with incorrect grammar you can still understand one another but when you're online and the other person lacks basic reading comprehension... it just turns into a lot of wasted time.

When anyone says, "Supposably." (Think Joey from Friends lol)
It's SUPPOSEDLY.
Oh.
Or when fanfic authors comment other authors on their bad "grammer".
your and you're is pretty bad
such a common mistake haha

Definitely definately.
Unnecessary "z"s. Like azn. Putting a "z" where there is supposed to be an "s" not instantly does hardcore make.
Most texting/typing shorthand except for a handful of the most commonly-known acronyms.
Oh, and I know this is really common but it drives me insane. Alright. It's not "alright," it's "ALL RIGHT." With a space. And two "L's." Somehow, though, "alot" doesn't annoy me quite as much.

My biggest peeves are "your" and "you're", and "lose" and "loose". Especially the latter.
Lose is the opposite of win.
Loose is the opposite of tight.
People ALWAYS get this wrong!

When Korean people forget to add "a" or "the"... you know... antecedents... because they don't exist in [the?] Korean language. May be true of other Asian languages. I don't know enough to know.

OMG LOOOOOOL!! My 10th grade.. wait.. was it 10th?
I don't know but one of my English teachers in high school did not know how to spell "grammar".
How pathetic was that, worst teacher ever. I did not learn anything in that class at all that year.
Here's a good one: 'Must have' vs. 'must of' LOL seriously?? That doesn't even make sense o__o.
I found this site the other day to show my friend how "definitely" is spelled.
http://www.d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y.com/No one's mentioned "it's" and "its" yet?
But my favorite is "waist" versus "waste." I always laugh when I read "I have a 32 inch waste."

More of general resignation when I see these:
should have v should of
would have v would of
bear (with me) v bare (with me)
a part (of) v apart (of)
prologue v prolouge
It always irritates me that people can't realise the past tense of "sink" is SANK, not SUNK (which is the past participle). So "The ship sank yesterday", not "The ship sunk yesterday". -____- Likewise with "ring, rang, rung".
Sometimes I also see people using "more" when they're trying to do comparatives, such as "more colder". WTF? I also hate it when people go "jealous much?" That's not how the word "much" is used.
And someone please explain why kids like using "Omg PWN!"?

Most of my personal peeves have already been mentioned:
1) Their vs. there vs. they're
2) It's vs. its
3) You're vs. your <--- This one is one of the most annoying mistakes.
What annoys me even more is when people get angry at me for correcting them. They get all defensive and 'hate on me' when I'm trying to help them out. It's a pitiful situation, to be honest.
To contribute to the thread, has anyone mentioned incorrect plurals? e.g. Sheeps, fishes .... *twitch*

Crappy spelling doesn't bother me too much.
But when chatting, I HATE it when people omit "?" at the end of questions.
For example:
"you there"
"can you do that for me"
"are we still going"
It sounds very rude and bossy, it makes me not want to respond.

Most are the "your/you're" "there/they're/their" "it's/its" "are/our" "to/two/too" mistakes that people make. I also hate in fanfics where people don't know that they're supposed to use either past or present tense. It's either you're doing something right now or you have done it already!!! >=o
Oh! I also hate when people use words like "should/could/would of" when it's "should/could/would have". It also annoys me when people don't use the apostrophe when they conjoin words such as "won't" or "can't".
It makes me laugh though when people spell it "grammer" though.
Love is Pain YES I also hate when people use the wrong words in plural. "We saw so many fishes." =___=
Oh my gosh I feel my skin curl when people use "d" instead of "th" such as "and den we went dere with her". At another forum this girl from the UK always writes like that and I imagine she's a chav thinking she's awesome for writing words to make it appear like how she speaks. Oh God, I shudder just thinking about having to put up with her spelling.

Ahhh... I am a grammar spaz. I admit it. I cannot stand "their, there" "your you're" mistakes... typical though.
I also cannot stand when people say "different than"... it drives me nuts. Like in the High School Musical song when Zac Efron goes "you know the world can see us... in a way that's different than who we are"... ugh. Hahahaha. Whenever I sing it to myself (yes, I know... 20+ forum), I always change it to "from," and now the original sounds even more strange to me than it used to.
And to someone who commented that he hates it when people don't use question marks. Same here! I lost my question mark key (because I tried to pop it off to clean under it and it broke), and I started typing (q) instead to make up for it. People always asked me why I HAD to put that substitute question mark there... and I just had to.

i cant stand when people misuse 'their/theyre/there', 'then/than', 'your/youre', or when they dont use correct tense or purposely leave out words (i.e. so your plan fail, what you going do tonight, (and this is coming from someone that speaks perfect english!) it seriously takes me longer to make sense of sentences with grammatical errors, so unless your english is sub-par, is it so hard to just type what you would speak?!

Any incorrect usage of the following:
- your, you're
- which, witch
- their, there, they're
- it's, its
- The incorrect spelling and/or pronunciation of et cetera. It is not one word nor is it pronounced eht-seh-trah.
And a major pet peeve:
- more better, more prettier, more (insert adjective)er. Not correct by any stretch and American English is quite a stretch as it is.
- most bestest, most (insert adjective)est. Again incorrect and honestly it makes you looks highly uneducated. Even toddlers know better.
No offense to those who are new to the language. I understand you may not have known but now you know.

Aside from the ones already mentioned --
"Could care less."
-- because, frankly, it doesn't even make half as much sense as saying you couldn't care less about some issue or topic. When someone says the former, I feel like punching a baby. :( & it's unfortunate, because it's used so colloquially in America.

About "a lot": When I was in the first or second grade, my older sister was telling me about her spelling homework, and she said she had "a lot" as a spelling word. She told me that "a lot" is two words, not one. For some reason that stuck into my mind, and I never forgot the space between the "a" and the "l". Hahaha.

1. Infactuation
2. Seperate
3. Truely
4. Wierd
5. Tommorrow
6. Embarassed
7. Sandwhich (even worse when pronounced "Sangwich")
I also hate these:
1. I could care less. - You can? Ok...
2. Effect vs affect - This one's a bit tough, but it's still not that hard to learn.
3. Everyday vs every day and anyway vs any way - Not too big of a pet peeve, but it does bug me when I see it.
