Why do people buy DSLR? (even when they have a digital camera)

SLR cameras are of extreme high quality but only film is used. Thus they use a DSLR which has the same picture quality as a SLR camera but can edit it on the computer and do all those fancy things and choose which ones to print of course! ;P
In short DSLR are better quality picture takers.

Because a DSLR takes better quality photos?
I use my DSLR when I want to take quality photos or for photoshoots.
I use my digital camera if I'm going to a party and just want to take random snaps of the night

Try reading through some of the posts in the pinned DSLR topic. I would say most of the discussion and techniques described in that topic are not things you can do with a regular point and shoot. Simply google "difference between dslr p&s".

to put it simply
the digital point and shoot camera takes pictures based upon what it wants. sometimes that picture will come out too dark/bright, grainy, messed up, etc.
a dslr lets you take the picture based upon how u want the picture to look. much more control and you can do things a regular camera cant. not to mention they're much more sharper and faster.
of course, if you use a dslr and only use auto functions you pretty much just wasted money.

if you can afford it and enjoy taking higher quality pictures (always disregard megapixels unless you want to crop pictures) then why the hell not

with a DSLR, you get to choose your depth-of-field. In layman terms, you choose what you want to put in focus by adjusting the aperture.

the picture on the right is basically what you would get with a point&shoot. The other 2 pictures is something you can't do with a regular point&shoot
Plus, not everyone wants to lug around their precious, heavy, expensive, breakable photography gear to the club when they can just carry a tiny digicam

thats what i was thinking

haha
Obviously because you have more control over the settings
and having to shoot in raw makes photo editing a lot easier (billion of other reasons refer to SLR thread)

Greater control over the results. As many people have said, there are many things you can do with a DSLR which you can't do with a point and shoot camera.
