Staying Motivated

I am trying to lose some weight but I just can't seem to keep my determination to do it. I get this wild craving for ice cream and chocolate and they just get out of hand. I know in order to lose weight I've got to pursue a healthy diet and stick with it.

Today I just got annoyed by my lack of motivation and so I googled on how to stay motivated when trying to lose weight and came across some pretty good ideas. I am not going to list all of them, but one of the ideas mentioned was starting an online club/group of people that want to do the same thing! So if you are a person that is going through that same problem as I am ask to become a member (I am going to make a member list because I think that would be cool).

Hopefully enough people will visit this page and get help from it.

Here are some things you can do:

Leave a comment and include -

Name:

Problem: (ex: I eat way to much ice cream and would like to find a way to stop).

Goal: (I plan on losing 10 pounds by the end of this month, remember take baby steps).

About yourself:

Anyone can just post every once in awhile, tell us how they are doing, seek for advise, tell us about a problem, tell us what they've bee eating - anything!

yay! I need lots of help! hahah

Name: Diana

Problem: I'm not exercising enough to use the calories i take in

Goal: I want to lose 10 lbs by next month!

About myself:
I've never dieted before!! I've always just exercised more/more intensely. But ever since I stopped my sports, I have no form of exercise! And my mom still tells me I'm eating too little, so she makes me finish everything she piles into my bowl

So for homecoming, I want to lose 10 lbs, and I recruited one of my friends. She made an eating plan for us, but it includes not eating lunch and dinner for a few days, then slowly add more food over the days. I'm really worried about this plan, and how it'll go at home [especally during dinner, when I eat with my mother]. I've heard that eating so little is just unhealthy/dangerous, and it's really easy to just gain it all back afterwards.

Sorry this ended up being so long. hahaha

^ fyi your friend's plan sux. crash dieting is never the answer, the amount of weight you lose will probably be lean muscle mass, not fat. fat can't be burned so fast as the rate of 10 pounds in a month. even though it depends on the body, pretty much for losing FAT, you can lose about 1-2 pounds a week. anything else will again, probably be muscles. not worth it.

if you really wanna lose weight, count your calories and make a deficit of about 500 a day and you'll look great on prom day, i promise^^

for the calories you DO consume, make sure it doesn't contain any trans fat, and lower the amount of fat you eat. get some form of protein but mostly eat carbohydrates. and spread your meals out throughout the day. reason i say your friend's plan sucks is because eating 1 giant meal a day is a recipe for failure. can you eat 1 giant meal a day for the rest of your life? no. can you eat 6-8 small meals every day for the rest of your life? possible. eating smaller meals also stabilizes your metabolism so you'll burn more fat and not muscles

Name: Sam

Problem: i cheat a little, if i think it's got healthy parts, i'll eat all of it (i.e. salami sandwich with wheat bread and non fat cheese). also i don't need motivation for exercise but the timing of my exercise needs to be correct. by the time i decide to workout it's too late already =( (i.e. 5 am... i decided to workout anyhow today though since it's been a while XD)

Goal: I plan to lose about 10-15 pounds over the course of 3 months to 6 months. my eventual goal is to get a six pack, thus i have to lower my body fat % from 16% (current) to 8%.

About yourself: I'm a unique person who likes to do most anything except eat sushi and listen to rihanna. I'm fairly sarcastic and if you don't understand my sarcasm it'll be a very difficult situation indeed. jk

i've also never dieted before. sure i've thought the thought (i'll eat healthier from now on) and failed the failure (still went to mcdonalds the next day) but never outright rejected things to eat. i've cut out many of my favorite foods and eat cereal now. i'm not even a cereal person. but Total sounds like a healthy choice and combined with non fat milk... it's nasty. but i still eat it. not really nasty, but there's soooo much better stuff, like meat. yeah, steak for breakfast.

i've wanted a six pack since... probably high school, and right now i am (kinda) seriously aiming for it. sticking to not eating unhealthy food is pretty much my diet. i'll still go to subway and order the oven roasted chicken sandwich (lowest calorie count that i'm willing to go, john tesh vegetarianism) and maybe go to mcdonalds and order the chicken salad. and occasionally i'll eat out with my friends and get all you can eat korean bbq, can't really spoil the mood and not eat right?

how'd i end up talking about food? my mind is in wander mode right now since i'm exhausted from working out and it's 6 am. but yeah, six pack. goal. gotta lose the fat that's covering up my precious sextuplets. 16 to 8%, which i've calculated to be about 10-15 pounds. it's tough. even 1% body fat % off is like a freaking achievement imo.

even though i say i don't lack motivation, the fact of the matter is that i don't NEED motivation. if i decide "i'm gonna workout out now" i go ahead and do it until the end. done. if there's food i want to eat i decide "i'm not gonna eat it" and don't eat it. but now that i look down on it, i in fact DO lack motivation. if i don't decide that i want to workout, i don't workout. if i don't decide not to eat something, i eat it. i need the motivation to start, make that conscious decision to do or not to do something. for that i really need a goal that i think of. no idea what that goal will or will not be.

holy crap i'm rambling. well i've noticed that about myself, i type out so many walls of text, even i think "damn. that's a wall-o-text. i'll be damned if i'm gonna grammar or spell check that crap, it's just too long." o well, if anything it's typing practice right?

o wellz, if anything i'm wanna use this page for motivation, report back here to say if i cheated or not, worked out or not. if i feel guilty by saying "yes! i done it! i ate that 800 calorie cheese burger today!" then maybe next time i won't eat it. no idea, motivation is a very fickle monster. motivation is a very ugly monster too. ever seen motivation's face? nasty.

Well ,well, we have some members! Great!

Welcome and thanks so much for sharing your thoughts! It was quite interesting listening to you guys explain your problems. biggrin.gif

Diana - I think for you we will talk about food and portion sizes, what foods to eat and what foods to run away from. And let me tell you not to follow your friends diet plan - you will do nothing helpful for yourself whatsoever! I've done some pretty reckless things like starve myself and, trust me, it does not work. When you don't eat enough your body goes into starvation-mode and you might actually gain weight! I repeat - DO NO FOLLOW YOUR FRIENDS DIET PLAN.

Sam - For you we will focus on the concentration (correct me if I'm wrong). It seems to me that you have the same problem as me: I like to have my junk food and if I let my craving go on for too long I go crazy and eat a lot of it. We have to teach ourselves to say no all of the time. And don't eat food you don't like.

I think to help the both of you I will post some healthy meal ideas and feel free to request any advice you'd like!

Meals to consider:

Breakfast - an english muffin with peanut butter (don't go crazy with it! 1 tablespoon should be enough) and a banana - this meal is so delicious and it is my favorite! The peanut butter satisfies my craving and it keeps me full and the banana also helps with fullness as well. It may not seem like a lot to eat in the morning but once you eat it, you'll be full.

english muffin with egg and cheese. only use egg whites (3). it's pure protein! for the cheese use a low fat mozzarella shredded cheese (1 ounce) and mix it in with the eggs while they are on the pan. after the egg is finished and the cheese is melted split the egg in half and plop them on both pieces of the english muffin. yum.

cereal. so simple. i eat special k satisfaction and it is so amazingly good! use about 1 1/4 of the cereal and 1 cup of 1% milk, add some fruit and - bam - there is your yummy breakfast!

Lunch -salmon wrap. they are so good. you'll need some canned salmon (use about half the can) and a whole wheat wrap. spread about a tablespoon of low fat cream cheese onto the wrap then spread the salmon on top. add some pepper and veggies ( i like using tomatoes) and you're done!

fruit salad. use about half a cup of low fat vanilla yogurt (i use source yogurt, you could probably use 1 cup of it because it's so low on calories). cut up some fruit, use some splenda or cinnamon, or brown sugar. sweet yet healthy.

(can't think of anymore ideas, I'll post more some other next time)

Supper - Diana - basically eat whatever your family makes for supper just make sure you don't eat too much of it. this it what i do at home so my aunt doesn't have to stress about making me something healthy (but i would find a substitute for hamburger, hot dogs, or sausage : chicken is what i use). tell whoever is making supper to ALWAYS make veggies - they fill you up and fill you up and you can eat as many as you want! fill your plate with them and take a potion size of whatever else is on the table the size of your palm. is has to be able to fit in your hand. if they tell you to eat more, grab more veggies.

Sam - if you are going to eat out here are some things you can order:
if you're going to subway get the smaller sub, and pick the whole wheat bread. get either the veggie delight, a chicken one, or turkey sub. stack up on the veggies. now you can either choose from having sauce on your sub or having cheese (having both on your sub would be too much). get some water and you are ready to roll.

mcdonald's
Chicken McGrill Sandwich, Fruit 'n Yogurt Parfaits, orange juice, one percent low fat white and chocolate milk, and at some restaurants, soup. (a tip when eating out: if you are getting a salad ask to have the dressing on the side so you can control how much you use. i dip my salad into the dressing instead of pouring it on)

Hopefully I helped even a little. I am getting lazy and don't want to type anymore. The next post I will probably talk about exercise and maybe more meal plans.

o no, don't get me wrong about food. my favorite snack in the world is lays limon chips, and i've completely cut that from my diet. ironically my sister also loves limon chips and when she came back from grad school today, i bought her a bag of limon chips and didn't eat a single one. well, i ate one. one chip. i soooo wanted more. there's still half a bag left. i should just stop thinking about it. wellz anyhow, i don't eat junkfood anymore. by cheating, i mean like when you go out with friends to say... BJ's, i can't really just not order anything and i absolutely cannot eat a vegetarian meal (i'm morally against it). so basically i would order without really considering the nutritional value of the food.

for subway, my FAVORITE is the spicy italian, i could eat that for the rest of my life. unfortunately, a foot long is 1040 calories. the chicken is 640. pretty much a no brainer for which sub i get. well i love cheese, wish subway had a no fat cheese option, but i never get sauce. well maybe mustard cuz it's low fat anyhow. but i cut mayo from my diet a long time ago. and again, i'm morally against the veggie delite. but the turkey option does sound good. o and i also cut sodas from my diet too, pretty much the only things i drink is water and liquor. don't make me cut liquor =(

hmm ionno, proportion wise i can't see the meal plans working, seems really small T_T o maybe you didn't know, i'm a dude. dude's generally eat more >_> like a muffin and a banana just seems so... tiny. i've also heard that fruits don't mix well with meals like the digestion rate is different so you'll have discomfort if you mix, but maybe that was all bs since you seem fine with it

i don't think i'd be able to eat just soup for dinner tho, hmm but i'll try it out next time. but really good idea on the dipping of salad dressing, i would definitely be able to control the amount of dressing i eat better

o for exercise, there's this one question that's been bugging me a little, that thing about doing too much low intensity cardio and your muscles deteriorate, is this true? i thought your leg muscles would develop if anything. and another question is that i've also heard that when your jogging it's better to change the speed at which you jog constantly because although you do burn calories your body gets used to the constant rate of jogging. why is this bad? if your body gets used to a pace... and you keep jogging at that pace. what's wrong with this? is it linked to the muscle deterioration question?

long as i'm here i might as well throw in my 2 cents about exercising and weight loss. first, exercise does not equal weight loss. exercise equals calories used. weight loss results from a calorie deficit which is the amount of calories you burn in a day is greater than the amount of calories you've eaten that day. so it is possible to be exercising a LOT everyday but still be gaining weight.

how fat gets burned: there are 2 types of energy in your body, and 2 types of exercises. although not completely exclusive to each other, 1 type of the energy is better spent by 1 type of exercise. the 2 types of energy in your body are carbohydrates (actually i think it's something like glycogen but w/e) and fats. and the 2 types of exercises are anaerobic and aerobic exercises. anaerobic exercises mainly use carbohydrates, and aerobic exercises mainly use fat. the differences between anaerobic and aerobic? oxygen. the anaerobic process uses carbohydrates and turns it into energy without oxygen. and the aerobic exercises uses a lot of oxygen to turn fat into energy.

now there's a set amount of carbohydrates within your body that can be burned. after a certain amount of anaerobic exercise, it'll initial the aerobic process. however, changing fat into energy with oxygen takes a lot of time, about 20-30 minutes.

now how do you use this information to loss fat? simple, like this: you can use anaerobic exercise and use up all the carbs in your body until your body is forced to produce energy with fat. but you'll have to workout for more than 20-30 minutes and the most amount of energy will STILL be coming from carbs. OR you can do 20-30 minutes of aerobic exercise to start fat being turned into muscle.

now the problem is this: the carbohydrates in your body. before fat starts being turned into energy, the carbs must be used first. so what's the most efficient method? do 20-30 minutes of anaerobic exercise to burn out the carbs, THEN do aerobic exercise to your heart's content for major fat burning.

i do wonder if this made any sense, i barely understood it and i freaking wrote it. i more or less stole this from about.com, but tried as i might i couldn't find the page cuz a link would have worked a whole lot better to explain.

however the bottom line is this: after about 20-30 minutes of exercise, you start to burn fat.

sorry to ramble on like this so much ambee T_T i still haven't slept yet.

o yes, here's a question, i have a VERY bad sleeping schedule. how important is a stable sleeping schedule for weight loss? how important is 8 hours of sleep for weight loss? (sometimes i only get 4-7 hours of sleep) i'm a night owl, i literally sleep through the day and wake up at 5 pm.

i so need to be motivated.

Name: Rose

Problem: 1. my body feel dehydrated if I don't have anything sugary (i.e. soda). water doesn't help much. 2. I get craving lots like ice cream, cookies, chocolate bars etc 3. i get hungry at nights sometimes

Goal: say ~10lbs by the end of Oct

About yourself: I ALWAYS (ok most of the times) skip breakfast cause i don't get hungry during that time & also I would get myself a large cup of Starbucks Camel Macchiato (i drive to school so yeah stop by there too). So i basically don't eat breakfast. For lunch I just eat what the school is serving. & than i get home & sometimes i eat & sometimes i don't. like i say my craving is weird.

I tried to diet so many time but I just lose the concentration/motivation. Try to go running but since it been raining lately at my place I can't go outside to run.
damyoungji
Name: Tiffany

Problem: I get hungry at night and every once in awhile, I have my craving for junk food.

Goal: I am hoping to lose 10-15 pounds by December.

About yourself: I am a person who does not believe that cutting down on meals is an answer to losing weight. I know this because I have done it before and rather than losing weight (I didn't exercise), I gained 12 pounds in 8 months. After I moved back home and I started eating regularly (not once every 12-24 hours), I lost 8 pounds within a month without even exercising!

I currently commute everyday (3-4 hours in total each day, and this is before winter arrives!), so I take the opportunity to stand and walk as much as possible. Rather than sitting on the subway (unless I am tired that day), I stand - from uptown to downtown. Walking to school is pretty good because heavy traffic threatens me about the risk of being late - so I speed walk when it normally takes about 5-10 minutes to walk to the subway and school. As for walking up all the stairs at school, it's a good work out since I enter from the third level, and my classrooms are in the fourth and fifth level. Even floor equals to about three levels of staircase with about 7 steps each?

By the way, I don't believe in diets, too. Unless I am planning to eat the same thing everyday until the day I die, I am not going to go by, "eating this and this only at this time of the day". I rather cut down on calories =) I eat a lot of small meals throughout the day, which is why I have the tendency to get hungry every 2 hours throughout the day. But after I am done with dinner, I only eat one small meal (sometimes junk food).

Problem: Slow metabolism

Goal: To get to 140 soon and have less bodyfat.

About yourself: I've already started working out again. I'm 5'9 and went from 174 a couple of weeks ago to 164 today. Hoping to get to 140. I'm usually jogging twice a day, for a mile each. Also taking weight training class on Monday and Wednesday. Consuming under 1600 calories a day. Usually eating cereal for breakfast, apples or oatmeal as snacks, sandwich for lunch and chicken breast w/ rice for dinner. Occasionally (like every 2 weeks or so) I would eat unhealthy food such as McDonalds, due to my friends being jackasses and having me eat with them.

Problem: (ex: I eat way to much ice cream and would like to find a way to stop).
I can never bother to start exercising. Also, I'm really unfit since I got bronchitis, I can't seem to breathe properly when I run for a long time.

Goal: (I plan on losing 10 pounds by the end of this month, remember take baby steps).
Hmmm.10 kgs in 3 months. Too ambitious. Maybe 6.

About yourself:
I'm so lazy, it's really sad. So I promise myself to LOSE WEIGHT and I will actually do it.
DailyMelody
Name: Charisse

Problem: I only eat when I'm hungry and always skip breakfast so I end up craving all kinds of snacks when I return from school or whenever I feel like it.

Goal: I wanna lose 10/11 lbs.

About yourself: I never believed in dieting or anything else... I used to be quite skinny when I still excersised. My dad even recommended me to gain weight during that time, which I eventually did when I quit gymnastics. The point is; I'm rather lazy, the only excersise I get is probably dancing, which I do almost everyday when I feel like it. I also love walking and whenever I have the chance I'd rather walk than take the bus or bycicle. I also have no endurance, I used to have astma so after already an hour of doing something intensive I have trouble breathing, but I just gotta build up stamina I guess..
Other than that; I already mentioned that I only eat when I'm hungry, my parents always scold me for that and keep saying "You shouldn't eat when you're hungry! You're only gonna eat more!" but I can't help it. I also skip breakfast, because of
1. Lack of time during the morning
2. No apetite, I really can't eat anything without having the feeling that I'll throw up.

I dó eat healthy things everyday, but I cheat by eating quite an amount of junk food too..
Kendri
Name: Irene.

Problem: I eat until I'm way over content; usually eat until about 90-100% full. Also, I LOVE eating foods which are high in carbs, which I think isn't making my diet any good.

Goal: I plan on losing about 6-10kg in 3 and a half months time.

About yourself: Even though I try to stay away from certain foods, I tend to have periods of time where I just give up, since I'm not motivated enough to keep at it. Plus, I keep procrastinating about losing weight.

Problem: I am unmotivated half the time and I manage to eat well all day then about 3 am I get really hungry and binge on all sorts of unhealthy things! Last night I made cookies ;_; I never eat breakfast, always eat lunch (which is a rice bowl with spicy chicken, and a bowl of fresh fruit and tea), and as far as dinner I just drink tea then randomly snack at night like i said XP

Goal: 10 lbs by Christmas, but I want to lose 25 in total, lose some inches and tone up!

About yourself: I have tried dieting before, but usually it turns into a crash diet, problems like that run in the family I guess. I am trying to stay mentally healthy and motivated while I try to lose weight. Most my weight goes to my hips so as far as exercising most my focus will be hips and stomach. I just cut out red meat from my diet to try to stay healthier, so as far as meats I am only eating poultry and fish smile.gif Also, I have a lot of allergies so lots of fruits and veggies I have to avoid T_T

Problem: I eat WAY too much. Somehow I went from really eating the perfect amount to over eating! It's such a huge problem. I just keep eating even when I'm full, it's like a habit!

Goal: I guess I'll start by losing 10 pounds by the end of the month, but I really want to lose 40 -45 pounds. (all that I gained)

About yourself:
I used to be really skinny before high school, and throughout middle school I was so skinny but, I always wanted to be skinnier. So I dieted excessively, and exercised. But then I guess life just happened, stress definitely, external pressure and I stopped exercising and just ate more and more. It wasn't like I ate junk food either(other than occasion), I just ate pretty healthy meals but SO much of them.

Now, I've gained 40-45 pounds since the end of middle school, and I'm a senior in high school now. I've gained so much weight so fast that I now have stretch marks all over the place! It's so disgusting! Every time I look at my body I want to just cry. It just makes me feel like I ruined my body forever. I used to have pretty legs and now they are just urgh.

I tried like the master cleanse but my mom forced me to stop because of the sea salt flush. MULTIPLE times now that I can't even like the taste of the lemonade anymore. I've tried too many diets. And all fail and me end up eating like a freakin' monster. It's like people say "oh just eat a little bit" constantly to me and fail to get that I just can't. They don't understand. Likes it's become such a habit that I just don't even realize that I'm overeating until I already overate.

Goal:
I want to lose 10 pounds by end of October, then steadily get down to my target weight. All together lose 50 more lbs.

I've been 86lbs to all the way to 213lbs in the last 5 years.
I just want to find a happy medium.

First, this is a great idea! <3 I've actually been rather depressed that I lost motivation so quickly the last time I started up a diet/exercise plan.

Name: Chee

Problem: I lose motivation to keep working out and eating healthier after four or five days every single time I start. I know, I fail so hard.

Goal: I want to lose one dress size by the end of November. Ultimately, though, I want to meet my "ideal" weight size and keep it in at least one year.

About yourself: I've never believed in diets since I have read and heard that diets will work for awhile but once you get off the diet plan you are very likely to gain all the weight back. sad.gif Instead, I've tried going toward the changing my eating habits all together route. The problem there is that I end up craving my comfort foods and candy and I tell myself, "Screw it, forget you granola!" and end up eating a lot of spaghetti. So my main thing with food is trying to find a balance in eating healthy and yummy but not over indulging. I suck at knowing when to stop eating, especially on the weekends and when I get home from work. I have been thinking about having a routine of meals:
Breakfast: - Water
- Granola bar
Lunch: - Water
- A sandwich/baked salmon
- Fruit (banana/apple/etc.)
Snack: - Granola bar
- Water
Dinner: - Water
- ???
Any ideas on healthy dinner items. I tried out eating a lot of baked fish and broccoli but I get tired of it quickly. And other ideas on my meal plan?

Working out....gaaah, I tried running for 30 minutes every week day and also doing push ups and crunches every other day for 15 minutes along with playing Wii Sports for 20 to 30 minutes every day I ran, but after a week, I was like, "Ulgh, forget this," and picked up my habits of watching tv and playing Guitar Hero instead. This is probably my main issue: lack of motivation to continue to work out.

Sara: I am in the same boat! When I was 12-13 I became sooooo freaking paranoid that I was fat because my older sister was a size zero and she and my mom kept telling me I was too big to fit into the clothes my sister wore (Asian women, man T__T), so I got depressed that I didn't want to think about my body....it really backfired. I look back at my middle school and freshman photos and realized that I was perfectly fine. Now though, need to lose weight!

Some things I learned you guys might find helpful biggrin.gif :
-Having small goals tend to work better than focusing on a big goal (IE. have a goal to workout for the week and congratulate yourself that you did it all week instead of focusing on your "I need to lose 10 lbs by next month"). I guess when you don't meet your long term goals or you feel like you aren't going to get there, it brings you down more than encourage you to keep working hard.
-Mint curbs your appetite. Chew that mint gum when you crave something!
-Working out too much can cause your immune system to break down, so don't feel the need to work out every day for hours.

Gals, it seems we have really similar problems. XD I hope we can motivate each other to become fit. Sorry I wrote so much.

Goal: I'm trying to lose 20lbs before Christmas! Which doesn't sound too bad but I rarely get to work out. Either my lazyness kicks in or I just simply don't have the time to hit the gym. So for now I'm just trying to eat healthy. smile.gif

About yourself: I'm 5'3/4" and I'm 127lb. I'm not considered overweight or anything but I would like to get in shape and lose my belly fat. I usually lose my motivation when I start PMSing cause my body retains water like crazyyy. About yourself: I'm 5'4 1/2" and at 129lbs. I'm currently in college right now and I cook everyday so it's great how I can control what I want to eat. Right now I am doing the P90 and it's been going great. I find myself being really lazy when it's exam time though...that's when I tend to reach for some unhealthy snacks =(. I diet every semester in school and last semester was the most successful. I have done the Master Cleanse and failed. I have tried diet pills but it only made me overeat after I got off. Now I know that I need to do it the healthy way even if the results aren't instant at least I know it'll last =)

Some tips: I just wanted to share what keeps me motivated smile.gif
Take pictures every other week, it's a great motivator all in itself!
Give yourself small weekly goals and only weigh yourself once a week at the same time.
Never crash diet, change your diet a little at a time. Add a veggie or a fruit to a meal everyday.
Calculate how much calories you should take in daily and try to stick to it.

Good luck everyone!

Problem: I usually don't get enough exercise, and I don't pay attention to what I eat! >_<

Goal: I currently weigh 143 pounds. I plan to lose between 13 and 18 pounds. I really don't have a set time I want to lose it by! XD

About yourself: I'm really just trying to be more healthy! I've tried dieting and exercise before and always fail! I find that if I actually "diet", I think about it too much, get lazy, and just stop! O_O So now what I do is just try to be more aware of what I am eating. I try to stay away from greasy or sugary food, and if I eat any, I try to eat a minimal amount. I've also got my self exercising! happy.gif I think my problem before is that I could never really find a routine I liked. I'd kinda do my own thing or watch an exercise video....but in the end I would always get bored and stop. I found Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred videos a couple of months ago and I must say I REALLY like them! I worked out to them off and on for about a month, not being too serious about it. :/ But NOW I have my self set up to work out every 2 to 3 days (whenever I have some time between classes and homework/studying). I feel so much better about myself, and proud to boot! ^_- I'm really doing this for myself, HOWEVER I will admit that I'm working out for another reason too! My boyfriend is going off to the Navy (starting in bootcamp). By the time he gets back he's gonna be really fit...and well...I guess I don't want to feel like a blob in comparison! XD LOL. So yea, thats about it!

You can try eating your salad without the dressing. Normally, the dressing on a salad contains lots of calories and stuff.

What kind of food do you eat at home?

^ you and me have similar stories

Name:JC

Likes it's become such a habit that I just don't even realize that I'm overeating until I already overate.

we do have similar stories. It makes me feel better that Im not alone with dealing with my weight and im not the
only one who understands the situation im in!

Problem: the stuff i eat

Goal: however much weight i need to lose to get my body toned + burn the baby fat on my face... by december

About yourself: Every night except for saturday, i either bboy or take a martial arts class(the classes are free so why not) for about 1 - 2.5 hours. I've lost about 3 lbs in 2 weeks i think? thats with bad eating habits and unhealthy food though. I usually don't eat that much during the day, but at night, i start eating. During the weekends its usually healthy food, but during the weekday its usually junk food. im semi chubby atm... im going to fix my eating habits, eat at least 2 meals a day (breakfast + dinner). i have a bunch of nutrition bars (health + fitness, blueberry), so i just eat one for breakfast, or a banana/apple. and ill also start to control my night eating habits. do you guys think i can pull this off? the martial arts + bboying gets pretty intense too... i usually work myself till im exhausted

Problem: I am too lazy to exercise, and I get tempted by ice cream, candy and chocolate.
I also get depressed a lot and sick.

Goal: I'll try to maintain 114 lbs by the end of year 2009. which means I probably try to loose around 6 pounds each month.

About yourself: I am 5'9. I've always been this thin girl, before high school. I'm used to seeing myself thin, and I look better that way, until things started to change. just to gain a bit weight, people started to tease me more about my weight.
1. I've tried dieting, like starving myself for a few hours or skiping a meal. once through my dieting I was depress, so it made the dieting worse. I got myself on track, I used to be 105 lbs. around this time I was around 99 lbs, I believe.
- during the first year of high school, I went on this trip that helped through a lot they made me exercise a lot. but after that I lost control of having the motivation up.

2. Went to depressing again, gaining weight instead of loosing weight this time. I gained so much that I barely fit any of my clothes. I was almost 136 lbs from then I went into this diet that I am not going to have any meals after 8 pm. it worked out, when I manage to maintain to weight 116 lbs, thought that didn't last long.

3. Temptation of every good food that I could eat over the holiday that I had. now that I am 125 lbs. I dont eat breakfast during school days, because I dont have time.

When it comes to working out, I try to bicycle on interval of 10-20 minutes, I jump rope for 30 mins (it helps keeping the flat tummy) and I "ride a boat" machine for 20 mins. I try to do this twice a week but then, it didn't work through schedule and laziness.

but right now I still do the diet "no meal after 8 pm". And I also try out some exercise like tiffany's leg exercise.
I have written down my measurements, and weigth scale and try to exercise every day with different exercise and see how it goes from then.
xkrn4lyfx
well, here's some fun questions because im confus >_>

first is a bad day. what is a bad day? why does it happen? two night ago i felt pumped up to do my exercise, i decided to run an extra mile on top of my run... then blam. it's a bad day. first my regular workout was hard as hell, then i had to take a break before working on abs.. then i had to take another break before running. but here's the thing, SOON as i started, i felt like crap. still did the distance but i had to take it slow and not as intense as i wanted to. what the hell was that? it's an off-day, but what causes it? i slept a lot, ate regularly, and did everything like i usually did and i wasn't sick... so what happened?

second question, pretty simple and straight forward. what is a cold sweat? you're exercising..... and blam, the sweat's running off cold and you'll probably vomit. what is it? what causes it?

third question is also simple. well not so much because again i'm confused. i've been reading a lot of the comments on a lot of the threads and APPARENTLY, a HUGE mistake a lot of people make is that... holy crap, they eat when they're hungry. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT?! i see soooo many times "my problem is that i eat when i'm hungry" like what's wrong with eating when you're hungry? are you supposed to not eat when you're hungry and only eat when you're not hungry?

last question is about food tastes... can you make yourself like something? personally i hhhhhate brown rice. it's dry, it's flavorless, it's nasty. but apparently it's better than white rice. actually is it better than white rice? on a calorie counter it said brown rice had more calories than white. so the rest of my question is assuming that brown is healthier than the white. if i eat enough brown rice, will i eventually come to like it? or should i just save myself the trouble?

lots of questions, hope i get lots of answers! happy.gif

hmm a question about that as well. i have been doing that, eating until full, then stop eating. but i get hungry again pretty soon. maybe two or three hours later. if i eat a big meal, 4-5 hours.

is hunger a thing i should just ignore and just intake calories as i see fit? at regular intervals of my choosing completely ignoring my stomach?

:33 This is such an awesome thread! Great to know i'm not the only one lacking motivation or having a problem with weight loss.

Name: Stellar

Problem: I binge eat ALOT and then i feel guilty and do crash diets. I basically eat even when i'm stuffed or not even hungry, just to get over boredom, because i'm unhappy etc. I love all kinds of food.

Goal: To lose 15-20 lbs in 3-4 months or at least before grad.

About Yourself: I'm asian, 5"3, weighing at 120 lbs and am in high school. During the summer, i got really fit, got myself a trainer and had a good diet. Lost weight and gained good muscle mass and felt at the top of the world.
I went from 123 lbs to 113lbs within 2 months of hard exercise and healthy dieting.

However, once school started again, i got emotionally stressed and i started binging again. I ate out everyday, got lazy with my exercise and started taking DIET PILLS. Absolute worse.

Now i'm trying to find myself again, and find the motivation i once had. Taking diet pills only made me think i could binge more, they wasted my money and had little to no effect, and they made me sick. Killed my immune system (i'm currenlty sick at home right now).

that...i'm not too sure. but i did always eat when im hungry, just till slightly full, maybe not even full. i just kept doing that and eventually my appetite got smaller and smaller, then i got hungry a lot less. right now i can hold off just eating 1-2 meals a day. try to control your appetite though, just live through the hunger lol, and your appetite will get smaller even faster

Goal: To lose around 12lbs.

About yourself: I lose. I gain. I lose. I gain. It's all a pattern. I can never find a good time to exercise since I wake up to have time just enough to get ready for school and I live in a pretty bad area so it's not safe for me to exercise outside my home area. I always tell myself that i'm going to start eating healthy & get all these eating plans but... it never lasts D:

I need some more veggies; fruits; & lean protein in my diet but i can't make food well & i can't go to the market by myself either since i'm only 15 & my parents aren't home alot ohmy.gif

ADVICE
Holy cows! There are a lot of people interested in this forum. Sweetness. Welcome all of you. Hopefully we will help each other!

Sorry I haven't been coming here enough. Grade 10 is kicking my butt and I've been spending too much time with friends...tongue.gif

I read over all the comments (and I will put all the member names under the memberstitle soon) and now I am going to be replying/answering some of the questions/problems. If I happen to miss something, tell me!

I think being lazy and eating junk food means people aren't really taking action to losing weight even though they say they are. Once people start eating healthier and exercising the brain says Yes! I am actually doing it! - This helps the mind realize that you are trying to lose weight.

Food problems and craving are really stressful and annoying! But I think, personally, we make it a bigger problem than it needs to be. We choose to eat too much food/junk food, which makes it a big deal. If we didn't overeat then it wouldn't be a big problem, even it it was ice cream that you ate!

Whenever I want some ice cream, or something, I really think about it and ask myself Is the a good idea? It takes a lot of focus and determination to stop and think about what you are going to eat. Another thing I do is think of something that keeps me motivated: clothes I want to wear, the boy I like, being healthy and being happy. It isn't a big deal if you do happen to eat some junk food, or have more of your favourite food once in a while, it helps the craving go away. Not too, too long ago I was hanging with my friends and it was a super hot day. I hadn't had any junk food for awhile and was going to the gym everyday, so we had ice cream - it doesn't matter! That small portion of ice cream wasn't going to make me fat and I deserved it.

Here is the ice cream brand that i like to eat (it's a healthy kind, low in calories) : Skinny Cow - they are so good and rich! I can't live without having them and since they are lower in calories, I don't think it would be a problem if a person had one everyday. If you have a craving for something, search if there are any replacements for it on the internet.

Eating small meals throughout the day can be good, depends on what you are eating. I cannot stress enough on how important eating foods with high protein and fiber is!!!! It does not matter if the meal is small, if the food contains high protein and fiber it will fill you up.

This was my problem actually. I was eating small meals throughout the day, but I was always starving. This was not fun. I wasn't eating the right foods. Then I discovered protein and fiber - it was so magical! I was still eating small meals but I felt like I ate an elephant, or something.

Food with High Protein and Fiber
1. EGGS (if you are going to have a lot, make sure you take out the yolk!)
2. OATMEAL - fabulous breakfast meal (add a banana if you like. yum.)
3. PEANUT BUTTER (don't overdue it! - I have peanut butter and a banana on a english muffin every morning!)
(I'll search for more, my mind just went blank and I can't remember any more...)

DO NOT SKIP BREAKFAST!!!!! People that skip eating breakfast don't realize what they are doing to their body. Eating breakfast is berry, berry important. When you don't eat breakfast your metabolism slows down and can't do it's job very well - you can actually gain weight doing this! And if you do lose weight skipping breakfast, it's muscle not fat. Eating breakfast in the morning helps you burn more calories throughout the day! EAT BREAKFAST! If you aren't hungry in the morning, eat anyway. Trust me, you will not regret it. Make sure you don't eat a lot at night because that might be the reason you are not hungry in the morning.

Want to know how to burn more calories throughout the day? Workout in the morning! If it's possible for you to workout in the morning before you eat breakfast and go to work/school, do it!!!!! When you go to exercise in the morning, before eating anything, you are burning calories from the day before and, actually, exercising in the morning speeds up your metabolism and you burn more calories easily. Plus, you have more energy, it's fantastic. Exercising in the morning in the healthiest time of the day to exercise.

I wake up, on school days, at 5:40 a.m and walk to the gym, run on the treadmill for 30 minutes and walk back home. I noticed that I had more energy and I could tell I was losing fat easier. It's so wonderful! If you can't go to the gym on workdays, go on the weekends. Leave your house early so you get to the gym as soon as it opens.

Wanting to lose weight means people are unhappy with their body and tend to be cruel to themselves. This is probably one of the hardest things to do but you have to love yourself and remember you have pretty things about yourself.

Ex.
I have pretty eyes...
I have nice skin...
My hair is so pretty and shiny...
I am such a nice person...
I am so awesome at math...

If you think about the good and forget the bad it will help you with losing weight. It worked for me! It makes you emotionally healthy and that plays a huge part in being physically healthy.

Do things that make you happy. A perfect example would be me today: I have a bunch of homework and studying to do, so I planned in advance on what I was going to do to keep me happy (I get stressed and upset if I have homework). My plan was to listen to TVXQ. They make me happy so I am listening to them all day (I am listening to them now <3).

For people that eat when they are bored or when you get back from school/work, you have the same problem as me!!!! I feel your frustration - and I think I may have come up with a solution on how to avoid it. If you are hungry, eat a piece of fruit and run! If you are just bored and feel like eating just to do something - run! I go to the mall with my friends everyday after school so i don't have the chance to eat anything. Keep yourself busy. Get out of the house and go somewhere- anywhere! Keep yourself amused and busy!

Another thing I would like to say, someone said (sorry! can't remember name...) that they only eat a salad for lunch. That's not enough, maybe. If you are going to have dressing, put it in a small container and do not dump in on the salad! Dip your salad into the dressing: this controls how much dressing you have. Add lots and lots and loads and loads of veggies to your salad and add some chicken (about 2-3 ounces). Eat some fruit and that should keep you full for awhile. If it doesn't, add some foods with protein and fiber to your lunch.

HOPE I DIDN'T FORGET ANYTHING! IF I DIDN'T, TELLS MES! Hopefully this helped some people. biggrin.gif Until next time. (Please excuse spelling errors, I was typing so fast!)
xkrn4lyfx
i think you straight up skipped me >_> or maybe you're saving the best for last?

@JunJun21
plz don't cut yourself. leave that to the professionals who know what they're doing. plus don't be unrealistic and think you can just leave your fat behind. truthfully, you are what you eat and apparently your body is telling you that you're eating too much.

the problem with eating 1 meal a day? the question is will you eat one meal a day for the rest of your life? no? then don't even bother. the problem with "diets" is that diets end and you go back to the way you were eating. what's the point? you will go back to what you were before. plus only 1 meal a day slows your metabolism to a snail's pace. i'm amazed that anyone can lose weight eating only 1 meal a day.

if you really wanna lose weight follow AMBee's advice. eating right and exercising. eating several small meals a day. the problem with eating only one or two meals a day is, again, your metabolism slows down. eating regularly throughout the day makes your body know that you are constantly eating food and thus it doesn't need to horde it's calories. when you eat once a day then your body reacts thinking "we are in a food shortage, so we need to hold every calorie we can get a hold on". in general that's what happens when you don't eat enough.

another great method would be to count your calories. time consuming? yes. worth it? double yes. write down everything that you're eating in a journal, then count how many calories you've eaten, then count how many calories you've spent that day. then subtract the amount of calories you've spent by the amount of calories you ate that day. to lose weight the number should be negative. if it's positive... you're gaining weight or maintaining a heavier weight. the LOWEST negative number you should have is around -500 calories.

if you want an exact formula of how much calorie deficit you can have in a day it's this: body fat percentage x .01 x body weight x 31. so for example, im 150 pounds, my body fat percentage is 16.7%, so 16.7 x .01 x 150 x 31 = 776.55 calories a day. so if i spend around 2500 calories a day i can safely eat 1723.45 calories a day without losing lean muscle mass. but i try to stick to around 1900 or 2000.

counting calories is a great way to lose weight. just like AMBee said, you can occasionally eat what you want. know how? count your calories. you can work anything into your day. if you love chocolate? add chocolate and take out something high in calories. just keep it consistent.

losing weight is an easy thing to do. i could lose 10 pounds easy, know how? just don't eat. bam 10 pounds gone. will the 10 pounds stay off? the way to answer that is, will i keep not eating? no, i'll start eating again and i'll gain those 10 pounds again. pretty pointless. same thing with diets, diet and lose 20 pounds, yay!! will you stick with that diet? no, you'll start eating the same way as before? gain 20 pounds again. pointless. only thing that works is lifestyle changes. exercise regularly 3 times a week for LIFE. eat healthier and not eat junk food for LIFE. only way to lose weight and to keep it off forever

p.s. for protein foods... don't forget MEAT. protein is needed for our diets because protein builds our muscles... so what do you think meat is made out of? that's right protein. but there's also fat in there as well. the best meats are therefore fish and chicken. much lower fat content than beef or pork although those are also high in protein

^ your so right true true true!

I read that and i tried you guys trick by eating little every 2h and i just dont get hungry anymore and breakfast is truly important. Ill tell you guy the diff.

10h a snak 100, glass of water
12h diner 300 glass of water

Ugh, I totally went gaga today with chocolate. I didn't eat too much of it but I ate more than I wanted to and now I feel sick. This is not good.

The last couple days I've been getting little craving for chocolate and stuff, and I am doing pretty good at keeping them under control (I am berry proud of myself) but I feel like I am eating too much and I think I am eating too much.

My worst problem, at the moment, is trying to control how much I eat. It's not a huge problem, I know it will go away soon but still, it is bothering me a little. I think tomorrow will be a better day, I have a feeling.

I refused to get too upset over what I ate today!!! It was wonderful! I used to feel self-hatred towards myself but now I don't. It is totally more healthy thinking this way, and I think is play somewhat of a part in losing weight.

My main problem isn't eating but exerising for a long time. I exercise for 20 minutes and I get bored and stop. I'm not tired at all and it annoys me. I try to do it in intervals but forget... +_+
For me, diet-wise, after I passed a couple of weeks of not eating junk food, the cravings just stop and it gets a lot easier. My body just doesn't want junk food anymore but it was really hard.

I like this thread. It's interesting, to say the least.
Since we're all trying to lose fat, one good piece of advice is to be busy.
Since we think about this kind of stuff a lot, it creates more temptation to eat unhealthy foods or binge eat (guilty).
This is the stuff I try to do. It's helped me lose 40 pounds.
Stay away from carbs (hard if you're Korean haha)
Eat lean meats like tuna, turkey, and chicken.
Snack on healthy foods to keep metabolism higher.
Eat more vegetables. Fiber helps digest food.
Do cardio up till 30 mins. Don't exercise too much, because you'll feel entitled to eat unhealthy foods and ruin your all the hard work you've done exercising.
Losing weight is 90% nutrition and 10% exercise. Focus on dieting more.

Name: James

Problem: I love to binge eat and have a slow metabolism.

Goal: Stabilize my weight around 160. Gain an awesome six pack.

About Me: I'm 5'10''. 165lbs. Psych major.

I'm counting my calories throughout the day & i'm trying to aim for 1100 calories... but i heard thats unhealthy so idk ohmy.gif

But when i count my total calories they come out to 1100 but since i workout i burn about 200 calories or more. So i get about 900 calories a day which is NOT HEALTHY at all.

I feel really full after eating my meals though & i'm not hungry at all throughout the day.
Do you think i'm counting my calories wrong? [I look them all up on caloriecount] or should i just eat more?

OH! & how many calories do you guys usually burn when you workout? I run for 30 minutes on the trendmill at a 5-6 level; is that little?
Thaory
i run on the eliptical for 40 min to 1h I lose about 550 - 1000 , but im fat 183 lol so i spend more calories than you. Well i spoke to a ... diet person? and she said to never go under 1000 she like "I would suggest you bring it up to 1300 even" , but i eat 1000 -1200 a day just like you. and im losing weight, also dont make ur body feel sick, if hes hungry or if u have a headache from not eating enough eat! Listen to your body. To be a little hungry its normal ur on a diet but to starve and to have a headache ur putting ur health to risk. ( I eat a sandwich when i feel like that or snack healthy when im just a tiny bit hungry lol )

OH! and I lost weight again
Week 2 total of 6 lbs yayy keep it going guys!

I don't really have a plan... Just eat less, eat healthy, and exercise!

well i looked it up online & i take health class & stuff. people should eat at least.. 1200 calories a day?
yeah yeah
"Do not go below 1200 calories per day unless you are on a medically supervised weight loss program or after consultation with your doctor" found that on about.com ahaha most other sites say the same thing.

When i calculated my caloriecount it says that if i really wanted to lose weight i should eat 1079 calories & that was for obese people ohmy.gif

But idk; i don't want to force myself to eat more if i'm not hungry. So i normally just eat 900 & burn it off when i work out; if i don't feel like i'm STARVING i don't think i'm eating too less.. right? ahaha (:
