Boomx2Brian
lucky. lately ive been hovering at even. not to mention ppl are getting too good at holdem its hard to find weak players. omaha is where its at
yeah
that's true, Omaha is where all the weaker players are right now, but i'm just too lazy to learn a new game lol
there are always going to be weak players as long as you table select well

That's real cash, right; not play money? Just asking.

My bf plays poker for a living. He prefers the live tables because in online tournaments, it's so rare and difficult for short stacks to come back and there are soooooo many bad beats, too many damned donkeys, and people just play their luck. In online poker, you're up against both the players and the computer. Better get a big chip stack, don't donkey it away or unnecessarily bleed chips, and hope to not get unlucky. Honestly, if luck wasn't involved, my man would win every hand. hahaha

I'm learning to play HORSE, but it's so tricky. I hate razz. lol
yeah

yep, that's real monies

cool, your bf plays for a living? how often does he play?
yeah, there are more bad beats and more donkeys online because the player pool is just so much bigger. I only play cash games though, so I don't know much about tournaments.

I haven't played HORSE or razz before, but I heard all the ballers play HORSE lol
maybe i'll try those games when i'm in vegas

^^ That's awesome! Hope your good run keeps going.

My bf's been playing for about 5 yrs. now. Regrettably, he missed the bubble. Ever since Moneymaker won and convinced all the amateurs you can win a main event, the boom really exploded. Now even Paris Hilton plays. Eeeks!

My bf tries to play at least 3-4 tournaments online during the week, then he heads out to the card clubs for the cash games and if there's a nice tourney happening, he'll play. He played last yr. for a seat to the WSOP, but finished 52nd out of 500 +. He had pocket queens, some guy had A, J and the guy spiked an Ace on the turn. Sick! Even chips so my man got booted. So far his luck has been more online than offline. He's the one teaching me HORSE. We play online at the play money tables because I refuse to lose money to lucky donkeys. hahaha He's very aggressive and I'm a tight player, but it has paid off. My family gave me the name "The Squirrel" because I always have the nuts. lol I've hit a Royal Flush and a straight flush. I guess no more for me then.

I come from a poker playing family. We have a tournament every year to see who reigns supreme. Nice pot of around $300. No second place... winner takes all.

Well... may the flop be with you.

One of my friend's plays poker as a living too...he plays online 5 times a week, and then heads to some place in Columbus to play. He does well for himself, earns a stable income and occasionally wins pretty big. He even quit his regular job cause he was making more than enough off poker.

Congratulations on your winnings! You must be very good =D

I am thinking about starting...just as some side income maybe. I played a lot with my friends, mostly small 5 dollar buy ins or cash tables, I always did pretty well, but that was against friends...I knew them, I knew how they played, I used that against them. It's much different online...But I am not expecting to make a lot and I do love playing poker so I suppose I should give it a try, huh?

It’s really cool that you don’t mind that your bf plays poker for a living. And that's why I don't like playing tournaments... getting 3 outted after playing for such a long time is not a good feeling =/

Are there good games in Columbus? And thanks =D

If you’re willing to work hard on your game, playing online is a great way to earn some money on the side. Anyone that has self control and willing to put in the time and effort should be able to average at least $20/hour. There are just so many resources nowadays to help you improve your game. And since you love the game, you should definitely give it a try!

My roommate my first year in college was the state chess champion of his age. He also turned out to be extremely good at poker and ended up spending entire weekends at the local casino. I didn't see him much, and I wonder how he's doing right now.

I heard that he dropped chess for poker, which I thought was a complete waste since the money he made off poker was quite meager in comparison to that of a regular job.

I'm jealous ohmy.gif. But I guess I can't expect to do that well multi-tabling 3-6. You play on Stars?

my friend makes a living online but mostly at the casino.

I play leisurely as I enjoy poker as a sport and never really looked into reading up too much on techniques and being totally serious with it. But I have been thinking bout jumping into playing it online.

Are there any books tailored to online poker specifically and not just the usual ones?

Lederer also dropped chess for poker.

A lot of poker pros are ex-chess players, and ex-gamers that competed at a high level. I'm sure he's able to beat poker at a decent win rate if he's smart enough to be a state chess champion.

Most of my hands were played at 3-6, and some at 2-4 and 5-10 no limit and I play on cake.

The best book out there for poker in general is "Elements of Poker" by Tommy Angelo. The best book on cash games that I have read is by Ryan Fees, and it's free to download online. If you google his name, you should be able to find the link.

There is another book on cash games that is co-written by one of the best online poker pros, but it's $1800 lol

So how much playing, reading books, practice, etc did it take before you became a steady, consistent player?

Wow that is like EXACTLY the same as me. I usually just play 20 dollar buy in with friends because I'm not much of a gambler and I really enjoy poker. I win more often than I lose for the same reasons as you. Playing with the same people all the time you know their game lol.

I've tried live casino but I don't feel comfortable playing there. Plus I'm not THAT good or anything.

My friend who makes a living off poker usually loses when he plays with us though, wierd.

I also ant to get good enough to make decent coin as a side thing online. I better get started on the readings.

I'm reading Ryan Fee's online book as recommended by Year...

"This means that if the game is loose (meaning there are a lot of bad players, generally
players with VPIP's higher than 28, for example a player that plays 32/5/1 is a weak bad

player) you should be playing a tighter more solid game, bluffing less often (including semibluffs)

and value betting thinly with 1 pair type hands. You should also play less starting

hands."

What does 32/5/1 mean?

Also, if VPIP>28% is consider loose in a 6-ring game, whats considered tight?

yeah

32 is the percentage of the time player is in the pot
5 is the percentage of the time that he raises while in the pot
1 is the aggression factor
I'd say 18-20 vpip is considered tight. Anything below that is just too exploitable.
If you go on twoplustwo.com, there's a ton of info on stuff like this.

I find that cake has weaker players than the other big name sites. Thats the only think that makes up for the horrible software. I haven't gone a single day without a glitch freeze

There are countless cases of people making huge sums of money over a period and then losing it suddenly. A lot of the world's top professional poker players are millions of dollars in debt. Most people just don't have the good sense to get out when they're ahead.

OP, go take your winnings and invest it in mutual funds. I'm sure that in 25 years you'll have a lot more to show for it than most other people who've had a similar recent run of luck.

BTW, what happens if you're in an on-line tournament and suddenly your computer crashes or goes off-line?

I actually prefer the software at Cake to other sites. I think it only froze a handful of times in the last 6 months (only when i try to close tables).

Sorry, but this is just not true, at least for the new generation of poker millionaires. I can think of 20 pro poker players off the top of my head who have won more than a million dollars and continue to be successful, but i can barely think of two top pros who have won a million and gone broke.

If I invest all my winnings in mutual funds, how else will i make money from poker wink.gif However, I do have a bit of money invested in mutual funds, it's just that the ROI from poker is so much better. Thanks for the advice though.

If your computer crashes during a tourney, you'll have to log back in asap, or you'll be forced to muck every hand, and pretty much get blinded out.

You cant be so results oriented if you play poker for a living. Its all about having an edge. Flipping a coin is 50:50 but what if i offered you 5 dollars if you hit heads for every 1 dollar you wager. The odds are in your favor and you should take the risk regardless of the actual outcome.
