Full Version: Timing belt?

sweet/nothing
so my car just recently started having some problems. Now i'm car challenged so i dont know much about anything. All i know is that since the weather started getting colder i've noticed my engine started making some noises when i start the car. Its like a small whinning noice when its idle but as soon as i accelerate the noise stops, and if i drive it around for a bit say couple of mins then the noise completely stops. My car is a 92 miata. I've asked a couple of people about the problem and most of them said it could be the timing belt needs changing but it was just changed at 99k and now its at about 160k so techinically i should have a lot more to go before i have to change it again right? Maybe it has something to do with the cold engine? Not sure, and oh its a manual if that has anything to do with it. Thanks, would love some advice.

It might be the serpentine belt or drive belts (which ever applies)

like he said, its one of the belt, change it now before it snaps in half while ur driving.

These two are right on the money. They may just need to be tightened but you may just need a new belt all together.

You could visually inspect them yourself. What you should be looking for is obvious signs of wear and tear like cracks and frays, as well as glazing. Another thing you can do yourself is pushing the belt between two pulleys and see how much it deflects (while it's not running of course). If you can push it more than 1/4-1/2" per 6 inches, you'll need a new belt.

I dont think its the timing belt. I think it's the bearings in the pulleys that hold the belt.

You can try putting on belt lubricators? If you keep hearing the sound, at least its not the belts. Then you can trouble shoot further.

My friend told me my bearings are going when I did my timing belt.
I replaced my timing belt with a friend @ approx 140k. I bought at at 121k.

Check out miata.net, they have almost every topic available for the Miata.
If they can't help you, buy a used engine from planet miata for $600? or was it $800, drop that in and you're good to go!

160k... I'm surprised your syncro's aren't gone yet. Mine are going T.T

You have to keep in mind rubber parts tend to wear out around 7 years or so regardless of mileage.
