I never had a debit card before, but about two months ago, I found out that BMO (Bank of Montreal) cards could be used as debit cards. At first I was puzzled since I thought that it would have the chip reader, but my mother used it just like a debit card before.
The thing is, I have been wanting to buy something online for quite awhile now. However, I have never bought anything online before, and after spending weeks searching for a decent price and shipping, I finally found a reliable seller. The problem is, does your bank notify you how much you spent? I am simply interested in a toner and it costs approximately 18 USD. I know I sound silly for asking this, but I am not much of a spender, and the only cards I have ever used is my American Express and Mastercard.
I'm just worried about how the whole online buying process works (I'm buying from eBay) and since my father checks all the bank statements, I was worried that he will find out. My mother said that I shouldn't be so paranoid since I work part-time and she is fine with me buying it. However, I don't want to end up losing my card out of nowhere since my dad probably thinks trying out new skincare products is a waste and such. Like I'm sure that if I talk to him about it, it will be fine.. but I happen to come from a family where there is not a really good father-daughter relationship between him and I.
I have asked some of my friends before if they could help me buy it instead, but most of them are broke, or I don't see them often. The ones I have asked so far doesn't have a BMO card, too, so they aren't sure either.

Set up a paypal account.
Your parents will not know your balance unless you have a shared bank account,
from the same branch of course.

Use your Mastercard when buying online from eBay and pay it off with your debit card... at least, that is what I do.
As for their bank cards, BMO is currently in the process of resending everyone a new bank card with a chip. I recently got mine in the mail

Also, unless your parents were your cosigner when you opened the account, they should not have any access to any information. As we're all 20+ in this forum... you might also like to know that now that you're over the age of 18, you can legally open a new bank account with no connection whatsoever to your parents, transfer everything into this account (I'd look into student accounts etc) and close the account you have with your parents. Be sure to mention to them you're a student and they waive your monthly fees

I have my own account, but my parents know all my information and they have access to it since they did it for me when I was eighteen. I was not expecting it at all. They just told me at the dinner table one day that they have set up my account. When I started working, the money was sent to my bank account. However, since my bank account was empty at the beginning of every school year, they started putting the money I earn into their own bank account. I don't have a lot in mines right now, and the money that is in my bank account is only there since my dad wanted to make my account look like it is active or something.
I wouldn't mind opening my own student account (if possible), but I must admit that I have no clue how to do all the taxes and such (hopefully I will know sometime soon since we will be learning about it in school). Not to mention, I have a bad feeling that if I opened my own, my dad will start suspecting that I am doing something illegal or something X.X

you should go to td bank and open a student account which gives you 20 transactions monthly free which is good and while you're at it you can open a credit card...opening a bank account will not affect taxes or anything and you can hide it from your dad unless he checks your wallet or rooom but it's your money and you're of age so you should decide what you want. seriously i think you should be managing your own finances assuming you are 20+ and if you are confused about banking stuff, you can always call up a bank rep and they'll give you all the information.

You could just buy a prepaid credit card from somewhere like Shopper's and use that to order online or use the card to set up a Paypal account.
Actually, I used to have my account under my mom's as part of a joint account since she works at the bank we use and recently I finally switched to my own account. I personally decided to let her have access to see my money and what not because I know it's my money, I can do whatever I want and no scolding or nagging is going to stop me, especially since it's now my account =D
Like someone else mentioned, if you're curious just book an appointment with a personal banking representative and they'll help explain things to you.

This is just personal preference obviously, but don't use debit cards for online purposes. In fact, you should only use debit cards for pulling out cash. There are dozens of disadvantages to debit cards compared to credit cards, and credit cards are also very whack.
Solve the online problem by sending a money order.

anytime you use the card as a debit or credit card the transaction will show up on your account.
if you discussed the purchase with your mom, and she says it's ok, then you shouldn't feel afraid of buying it.
if you want to discuss it with your dad, obviously you can do that too.
just buy it with the debit card.
