Hi everyone ~
Like a lot of people in Soompi, I can hardly cook ^^"
But I wanted to cook dinner for my family some time because they get home rather late
So I was wondering if any one had any tips on what to make
Like starter recipes ?
Btw my family is Chinese, so something along those lines
And no dumplings, fried rice etc XD

Thanks ~

I know it isn't really "Chinese" food if you want to get authentic and all about it but egg drop soup is fairly easy. I'm sure if you googled "simple Chinese recipes" you'll get a lot of results as well. Good luck!

the easiest thing to make would probably be those dishes that are all cooked in a single pan/pot... from my own experience... teriyaki stir fry is the simplest thing..

ingredients:
beef/chicken/shrimp (cut into cubes or strips)
vegetables (i like to use napa cabbage [sui choy], bean sprouts, white onions, carrots and broccoli)
oyster sauce
salt
pepper
teriyaki sauce (store bought.. can be made but who really has THAT much effort? =])
oil (i don't use tons of this... nonstick pans are your friends)

directions:
boil the vegetables (except onions) till they start to float, signifying that they are done.... drain and put aside. (note: bean sprouts should be added to the boiled water last... they only need to be in the water for like 1 min, other vegetables i used need to be boiled approximately 5-6 mins...... if you over boil any vegetable they get mushy... edible but not as good)

if using chicken/beef, put into a bowl and enough oyster sauce to coat the meat evenly and let sit for 5 min.(skip this step if just shrimp) = this step tenderizes the meat smile.gif

heat oil in a large pan with white onions (i like to put fresh minced garlic in too if i don't have any then garlic powder works, but will be added in a later step) and stir until fragrant...
-if cooking with shrimp, add shrimp into heated pan with a little bit of oyster sauce
-if cooking with chicken/beef, just stir fry until almost fully cooked

add boiled vegetables and stir in with meat/shrimp

add a pinch of salt and pepper (and a pinch of garlic powder, if desired)

finally, add some teriyaki sauce (amount will vary depending on the sauce that was bought.. but typically about a tablespoon is sufficient) and stir.. make sure you taste it to ensure readiness...

if you want more teriyaki sauce.. in a small pot... add 1 part teriyaki sauce to 1 part water (so 1 tsp sauce + 1 tsp water.. etc) and boil till you have slightly thicker consistency.... i add water to reduce the salt intake (anatomy lesson = more salt in body.. more water in body = increased water weight) without sacrificing too much for taste.. but if you're not an aging, slow metabolizing woman who would otherwise not care for salt intake dry.gif ... by all means just warm up the teriyaki sauce straight....

DONE! serve with rice....

i like this recipe because it is quick (10 min! meal) and can be healthy if you load on the vegetables...if you are vegetarian... tofu can be replaced in this entire recipe in place of the shrimp and vegetarian oyster sauce can be bought smile.gif

hope this helps.. =)
living with someone who has no discernible cooking skills.... helps build cooking skills... haha.. for me anyways..

Hmm, for a starter huh?
Stir-fry veg, perhaps.
Or the really basic one; frying eggs. ><

soup!!!

boil about 3/4 pot of water with some leftover bones (steak/chicken/duck/whatever) from last night's dinner. meanwhile, just dice up some, carrots and celery; add in a sliced tomato, and a little bit of ginger. just throw everything in the pot once the water boils. boil over medium heat for an hour or so, or until the carrots and celery have reached the desired tenderness. if you wanna throw in some diced potatoes, now would be a good time to do so since they get mushy if you boil them for too long. smile.gif

oh, just a note.. the longer you boil the soup, the more concentrated the taste. you shouldn't have to add much salt if the you've marinated the meat of the leftover bones when you cooked it.

You put gochujang in kimchi jjigae? ohmy.gif Sounds more like budaejjigae. You should add some ramyun noodles, spam, and sausages in there. Mmmmmm....

Honestly, just look up directions to recipes and just follow it. That's all there really is to it. Try it and make changes the next time you make it.

This recipe is very simple and delicious: http://nookandpantry.blogspot.com/2008/03/...n-qie-chao.html It's truly a comfort dish.

This is yummy too and super duper simple: http://chinesefood.about.com/od/vegetables...esebroccoli.htm I don't think it requires that much since my family (and I) just blanch the gai lan and pour oyster sauce on it. But, I think the recipe will make it more tasty lol. xD

This is soooo good: http://live2cook.wordpress.com/2008/06/22/...onion-pancakes/

Haha, I just realize they're all veggie dishes. Well, they are a little easier to work with. You can add some meat to the tomato dish. I think some ground beef might go well with it. (: Good luck!

LOL, no, what I really mean is rooster sauce, but not the one in the bottle, the one in the jar.

I'm vegan. I'm not putting all that nasty meat in my jjigae

Arroz caldo (filipino congee) is easy too.

2 cups white rice
a bunch of sliced ginger
2 sliced garlic cloves
6 cups water to start
a little fish sauce
a little white pepper
vegetable/ chicken stock (I just use the cubesx2 but you can buy the box of ready made)
green onion

Make or buy your stock.

Put sliced garlic and ginger (LOTS) in a pot with a little oil; when the garlic is light brown add the rice. Stir it around a little then add the stock and the rest of the water. Let it simmer. Keep adding water until rice is dissolved and it's as soupy as you like. Usually takes about 30-45 min. Top with green onion.

Steamed pork spare ribs! This is my specialty<3 Hehe

Ingredients:
1) Ribs (chopped into cubes; butcher can do this for you)
2.) Salt or chicken broth powder
3.) Oyster sauce
4.) Black bean & garlic sauce
5.) Soy sauce
6.) Corn starch

Mix the ribs with corn starch and let it sit for about 3-5 minutes. Add salt/chicken broth powder, oyster sauce, black bean & garlic sauce and a dash of soy sauce and mix. I use my hands because it spreads the sauces more evenly than a spoon or chopsticks. After the sauces have been mixed with the ribs, it is ready for steaming! Steam for 10-15 minutes and voila! Delicious ribs<3

Ahhh right I forgot you don't eat meat. Haha.

That's really interesting. I've never seen anyone put rooster sauce in kimchi jjigae before.
