Full Version: Which "Smart Phone"?

I'm looking for a new smart phone. Something that's very easy to text/email with. I would like it to have full html web browsing, music/video and gaming capabilites as well. I'm not really using it for work or anything, just something that's good for texting. Texting/Emailing is what I mainly communicate with. I also want the web and apps to just mess around with during down time. I've got 3 phones I'm considering right now but cannot make up my mind at all. mad.gif If anybody can give me some help/insight that would be great. I'm not in a real rush to pick one up though... maybe even in a months time.

1st phone Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_xperia_x1-2246.php
(I don't know anyone that has experience with this phone)
-The reason why I like this phone is simply because it looks amazing. The style is very elegant and it isn't a phone you'd commonly see (around here). I guess I just like it pretty much for the "baller" factor. I also like how it has a full sliding keypad though. Reviews I've ready said it's very easy to use and probably one of the best out there.

-Reason why I'm hesitant on this phone is because I heard it's very laggy, it crashes, and it's annoying to navigate through. I've had a windows mobile device before as well, and, I agree it's kind of annoying. Lastly, it doesn't seem to have as much aftermarket application support as the iPhone does.

2nd phone Apple iPhone 3GS http://www.gsmarena.com/apple_iphone_3gs-2826.php
-I like how there's so much 3rd party application support. The display is amazing and it's the fastest, most powerful phone of the 3.

-Now, I'm kind of put off of the iPhone I guess mainly due to all these iPhone fanboys. It annoys me to no end when iPhone owners bash other companies blindly. It just frightens me to think that I'd be supporting a product supported by so many arrogant bandwagonners. Another thing I find annoying is the full on touch screen. I mainly communicate through texting and I guess I'm clumsy but I usually hit different parts of the screen and don't hit the key I actually want.

3rd phone Blackberry Storm 2 (or any blackberry) http://www.gsmarena.com/blackberry_storm2_9550-2970.php
-Everybody at my work has a blackberry and so do most of my friends. One of my friends recommended it due to the blackberry messenger. It'd make networking so much easier. I like how the storm has a full sized screen and the push down button on the screen so I don't accidentally press the wrong button.

-Problem is, I heard the overall quality of the Storm isn't that great. 2 of my friends have this phone and they're telling me (as well as read) that the push down screen can break easily or is annoying when it doesn't work. In such a case I've considered the other blackberries which only have 1/2 a screen but I was really hoping for something with full screen.

So should I walk a new path and get the phone that will stand out, look original but be a pain to use? (Sony Xperia X1)
or
Have the most powerful and entertaining hand held device, but, sorta counters my original reason for buying a new phone. Something that's easy to text/email with, that is. (iPhone 3GS)
or
Conform, have the best communication device but be bored to hell with it? (Blackberry)

I know it's a long read but this phone will last me a while and I want to make the right choice. Thanks in advance. I really do appreciate any feedback.

i would not suggest the X1 because of the experience that my bf and I have had with it. Let's just say we have never been so glad to toss away a $600 phone.

I currently have an iPhone 3g and I really like it despite the fact that the battery lasts about half a day. It sucks, really. Im always browsing the internet, texting and playing games so that could be the reason but I honestly think the battery could last just a little longer. I would suggest it if you are a light user.

As for the Blackberry Storm, I dont have an experiences with it but some people who have it have told me it is really slow and the on screen click thing is annoying. To be honest, I would rather get the Curve or the Bold. I had the Bold and it was absolutely amazing. Super fast, super powerful. I sold it because it was quite big for my hands. And Im pretty sure the Storm is only for Verizon, I dont think there is a GSM version yet. Unless there is but I would still say the Storm is not the best Blackberry.

Out of those, I'd recommend the iPhone. Android phones are cool too though >_<

Why not try the Xperia X2? It's coming out soon and it runs on Windows Mobile instead of Symbian. Or if you can wait, Xperia X3 which will come out around January/Feburary. But this one will run on Android.

If you're a texter, I say G1. It's easy to use (resistive touch screen) and also have a physical QWERTY keyboard. It's a bit old (been out for a year already), but it works with what you're looking for in a phone.

resistive touchscreen is actually harder to use.
capacitive is what you want if you text a lot and look for smooth scrolling/flicking.

if you are with T-Mobile, highly recommend the new Motorola CLIQ.Better qwerty than the G1 by far!
if you are with AT&T, iPhone is the way to go. texting is great and the 3rd party apps are fun to play with...even though fart apps are getting quite annoying.
if you are with Sprint, I recommend the Palm Pre. Eventually, the app store will get more apps.
if you are with Verizon, get the new Motorola Droid. Awesome keyboard.

also, the Touch Pro 2 (Tilt 2 for AT&T) has an AWESOME keyboard, but it is on the heavier side and more for business users.

^That depends on the person. For some people (Myself included) capacitive touchscreens don't
work that well. Even on the Iphone or Itouch, I have to touch it again and again for anything to happen,
and then it's not always what I want. I'll touch in one area and another will go off. I'm not saying that's everyone.
But you should go in and see what works for you before buying anything.

Now onto the main topic. If you are willing to sign with verizon, (or whatever cdma carrier) I would
recomment the Storm2. It's supposed to be completely reworked from the original storm with twice
as much ram, and instead of one big click sensor in the middle, it has one on each of the four corners and
the sensors don't even work the same way.

That said. If you are willing to get a phone other then those three, get the Moto Droid. That thing is beautiful.

^^ i wouldnt recommend the storm 2. the first one was bad enough. a user here has posted her experience with the Storm 2 and quite frankly i believe it's not up to par.

i do agree on the motorola cliq, blackberry curve/bold/tour depending on whichever carrier you have although i dont think you should switch to verizon or sprint just for a phone because having GSM network is better. iPhone is good also but be cautious that it IS a little harder to type/text and the battery does not last even a day.

as for the g1, if youre not into all the social network sites and the MotoBlur feature of the Motorola Cliq then the g1 would be a better choice. its probably cheaper too. Ive heard that the motoblur feature lags the Cliq alot.

I agree...the original storm was bad and I've heard from reviewers its not that great of a phone (storm 2). also, GSM is better because you can get unlocked phones.

Capacitive touchscreen, some have said it's easy to use because it's easy to press. The problem is that you can't use your nails. So if you have bulky fingers, it's harder to use because you can't really use the tip of your finger either. Resistive can use fingernails and so it's easier to press tiny links on the screen with your fingertip or stylus. Both touchscreen have 50/50 chance of being easy to use depending on the person.
