MacBook Air is a pretty weak, slow and fragile system. It has a history of it's hinges breaking.
If you want a MacBook, go with the pro. Dell Inspirion is good too, but you'll just need to remove all the pre-loaded software on it.

Yeah, I second that. Get a Macbook Pro 13" vs the Macbook Air.
If you want something light, try Dell Studio 14z, it's 14 inches and it's really light. I love it
