Where would you rather live? A major U.S. city (L.A., NYC, maybe Chicago) or a major Asian city (Tokyo, Hong Kong, Seoul)? I've lived in the U.S. suburbs all my life so I don't really know what the American "city life" is really like, especially in cities like NYC and L.A. but I've been to Seoul, and after staying there for 3+ weeks, I didn't want to leave. I would probably live in a major Asian city (whether it's tokyo, hk, or seoul but I would stick with seoul or try out tokyo) because although it's a little more congested than American cities (I think), and I think it's still more "peaceful" in a way than U.S. cities ..... and transportation is much better in asian cities ... much cleaner ..... less crime .... better costs ...... and NYC has terrible drivers, Seoul has far better drivers, and more friendlier people. what do you guys think?

I dream of living in Seoul smile.gif

I've also lived most of my life in California suburbs, and LA after college, which I don't consider a "city city". I completely prefer urban living over suburban, and feel Asian cities are more quintessentially urban than places like LA. I do love SF, which has such a unique vibe. I've visited Hong Kong and lived in Seoul for about a year, and both cities definitely have excellent transportation systems, safe and clean environment, and are rich in culture and nightlife. It's my dream to live in Tokyo, definitely can't imagine a more amazing experience living in one of the greatest cities on the planet.

I'll go with Tokyo and probably live in Akihabara and Otome Road for the rest of my life as a nerd

...But then again, I want to live in NYC too..

From your list I would choose Hong Kong. I never vistied this place though. From the things I heard and the pictures I saw Hong Kong must be a really vibrant city, but I don't like Cantonese language for some reasons. lol

I would never want to live in an Asian city. Besides, no city is greater than New York city.

That's true, NYC is a great city but it has its pros and cons. Seoul is a great city as well but I believe Seoul has more pros than cons ..... both cities have amazing transportation but the subways in NYC make me sick whereas the subways in Seoul, they are much more cleaner and doesn't have strange people wandering around in the stations. Seoul is also safe, and I'm going to assume that for Tokyo as well. I've walked alone at night in both cities and I sure felt much safer in Seoul than I did in New York City. For housing costs, I have no clue which city is more cheaper/expensive. I guess it depends by which part by part in the city.

I live in Miami and I hate it so much. No one here speaks English. It's like an entirely different country, so I'd rather live in say, Tokyo, and get the whole experience of not understanding the language and it being okay, because that's the language of the country.
`ANITA
I don't really care, as long as it is a major city. I love major cities and the life it has.
If I really were to choose though... hm... maybe Asia. I've went to Tokyo and Hong Kong before; I loved it there.
AhYee
Hmmm... really hard to say.
Transportation in asian cities would be much easier, I think.
But I prefer english over any other languages. I'd have to learn that city's/country's language if I want to live there.
I think I'll try major asian cities for a bit, and then back to major North America city.
I'd ideally like to retire in Canada.

Major asian city.
Just because of the sole fact that I miss my motherland way too much.
(SEOUL, I shall return soon lmfao.)

Been living in NYC for nearly 4 years and also have visited Seoul, although that was over 7 years ago.

You've already had a positive experience staying in Seoul, so why bother coming back to the states? I'm under the impression that expats are concentrated in certain areas there so unless you have a compelling reason for leaving, why go through the trouble? Or at least stay for a couple of years before moving back to avoid buyers remorse.

And I don't buy your friendly Seoul drivers story. I arrived at Inchon International, departed for Seoul, and thought we were racing the Daytona 500. People honking, weaving in and out, and speeding recklessly. Compared to NYC, I'd say ease of transportation is about the same, but doesn't Seoul have bullet trains now? Might have to reassess.

I've lived in both downtown Seoul and Chicago, and I have to say I prefer Chicago =)

Chicago is love.

Major US city. Love the feel and look of it. Preferably east coast.

Honestly, any big city will have it's goods and bads. Too many generalizations here. And I don't believe that all Seoul drivers are friendly. I know at least in Shanghai and other major Chinese cities (based off of my experiences), there is a high high chance you'll get ripped of off if you're not a native.

I've been to Hong Kong. It's so CROWDED there and then air is horrible, but the trains are VERY clean and the trains come like every 3 minutes and they're mad fast. i got robbed though and i always had to keep my bag in my sight at all times. In Seoul, there wasnt much to do, it was pretty much the same thing everyday. But the food was amazing.
I've lived in NYC all my life. When i went back home, it was like my sinuses cleared lol. It's not as crowded as Hong Kong. The train kinda sucks though, gotta wait a long time if its not rush hour. ;[
but we got everything here. Good food from all over the world, great shopping. the best biggrin.gif never walk home alone late at night. i got robbed a couple of times.
traffic is TERRIBLE. Drive to manhattan at your own risk cause you'll never get there and you'll never get a parking spot.
Brooklyn is love.

OMGOSH! i totally want to live in ASIA~!!
(like tokyo, Seoul, any where in asia! you name it!)
I live in america for as long as i remember

lol
jin_kee
Personally I love Asia smile.gif I'd probably move to HK even though the air quality is super bad. Its just a lot more fun and I reall enjoy the warmer weather.
KanyeWEST
NYC is the best city in the world. All other cities pale in comparison.
dancingbymyself

I dream of living in Seoul smile.gif

ph34r.gif watch out for the dust-storm!

I realized I never really lived in a city before.. I live like 15-20 minutes away from it though. I never lived 2 hours away from city. It was always 15-20 minutes >__<;; Just realized that cause of this topic lol... For me, I rather live not too far away from the city. I don't like to live in the very countryside... sometimes feels like it's scary at times. Like you know watch a scary movie, there are times when their location is really far from the city and they are living alone in a small or big house and something scary happens?! Yeah.. D:
sara-tart
ehh...Idk like I dream of visiting places like Seoul or tokyo,
but I dont think I would want to live there lol I love my country
and I could think of no better place to live except the U.S<3

so I think I would be happy living in like san diego or new york
and than take alot of trips to seoul and such smile.gif

both are expensive. well since i only know english, and don't want the culture shock, i'd pick us major.
RYUUSEi
I'd love to live in the city my father was born in, Hong Kong.

I swear, when I was at Victoria Peak and overlooked the city, I completely fell in love with it. Such a beautiful and amazing place and the food is perfect for my taste. I felt like I was right at home the moment I stepped off the airplane. I was almost crying when our 2 month-vacation there was coming to an end last summer, lol. But sadly ... since my Cantonese is only decent (and I realized how hard it can be to survive there for people who aren't fluent) plus the pain-in-the-ass humid weather, I would rather choose a place like Los Angeles (which I'll be moving to next year!) and keep returning to Hong Kong for vacations instead. smile.gif

I'd love to travel around Asia and have all my vacations there but I think when it comes to actually living somewhere, I would prefer a major U.S city since I'm fluent in English and it wouldn't be as hard to adjust to the place, culture and traditions.

All around the world, really. But if I had to narrow it down-- Jeju (city), Monaco (city), Kyoto, Florence.. Venice. Not all are metropolissen but they certainly conjure beautiful images and tranquility to me.

i would rather live in the major us city
luv_panda
As much as love city life for the shopping/food/entertainment.. i love living in the suburbs for that extra peace of quiet I think!!
Never been to Tokyo or Seoul..but HK was a bit busy for me as well as Shanghai! Couldn't live with their lifestyle!
converse1918
It's a really tough choice for me : P
I mean NYC is totally a place where I would want to live, that is if someone paid for my living costs ^__-
And Seoul is somewhere I would want to live in at least a couple months of my life ( :
But I definitely prefer city life over a country life ( :

Major US city. Currency's bigger. biggrin.gif
ichigo_no_powder
really depends on which asian city we're talking about. if you're specifically talking about seoul, tokyo or HK, then i would definitely choose asian city. no offense to the majority of soompiers but... i have yet to find a American city that i could actually picture myself living in and feel comfortable with. San Francisco comes close but i still wouldn't want to live there New York, probably the most famous American city i the world was for me, a big letdown. .
oohdi
I think major cities are way too much for me. I kind of like the laid-back city with not much traffic. If I had to choose though I'd choose Us city. I'd only visit an asian city than to actually live there. The thing that bothers me is in Asian cities you don't really get diversity in ethnic groups like in the US. Also I'm not interested in learning a new language to communicate.. I'm way too lazy for that.
xclueless
I love HK<3 I used to always say that when I grow up and have my own family I would raise my kids in some major city in Asia =P I love my Asians so I wouldn't mind living amongst only Asian people forever. I don't really enjoy diversity.
meow.
I haven't been to enough Asian cities. I'm sure there's a large degree of diversity within them though.
Nor have I been to a US city. But I can definitely say that I'd prefer to live in Sydney over Shanghai/Tokyo/Kyoto (only Asian cities I've been to). The air is so much cleaner, and I like a more relaxed lifestyle and atmosphere. Lol I sound like such an old lady but the hustle and bustle is ok only once in a while- I'd much rather opt for the city that has the more easygoing atmosphere.

I would also prefer a place with greater cultural diversity, so that's another reason I probably wouldn't want to live in a major Asian city.
PDURRR
well i live in the suburbs and though LA is a major city in the US..downtown is pretty mini cooperty,..public transportation sucks balls..everything is tooooooo spread out
i'd LOVE to live in NYC though..chicago would be nice too
Yangie12
I'd love to live in Hong Kong! And perhaps come back to Europe when I'm an old lady xD A major U.S city like New York seems awesome too, but I still prefer Hong Kong.
_escape.reality*
major asian city . ! (:
either Seoul or Tokyo <3
KaiKaname
asian..... ofc cause i don't really feel fit in in US city
milly
A major US city because even though I love Asia and everything, English is my predominate language so I need to be in a place that speaks English as the primary language. :]
ForgottenReason
I'd stay right where i am, NYC.
I've lived in Hong Kong and China for about 2 months at a time (and been to other cities for about a week, Shanghai, Kyoto, Nagasaki, Beijing, Nanjing, etc) but nothing compares to NYC. I probably won't be able to stand the amount of pollution in Hong Kong. You can literally SEE it. Don't get me wrong, i absolutely LOVE Hong Kong, but its not somewhere where I can see myself living in. I would die living in a place where smoking is allowed in restaurants. There's also a different vibe... New Yorkers are either very arrogant or extremely nice hehe. But in New York, you don't need a car to get anywhere. Its a face paced city where everybody has somewhere to go and it doesn't stop. ever. New York only has dirty train stations cause it is one of the oldest underground subway systems. The ones in the Asian countries are fairly new. and we don't have terrible drivers haha! we have terrible pedestrians =3 we jaywalk everywhere. New York has definitely made me stronger in so many ways. I'm open to so many diverse things. I can walk outside my house and thered be food waiting out there for me =3 I can read ANY other subway map from another country as far as im concern, with ease, cause ours is definitely complicated.
But, of course, I wouldn't mind going back to Hong Kong every two years or so cause that place is awesome too. It's just that New York City is where I belong =)

P.S. I dont know about Seoul, but in many asian cities, especially Shanghai, they kidnap little children, disable them by cutting a limb off, and making them beg for money (for their 'master') out in the streets if they want food =[ its so sad. not very friendly at all.
JAMIESHOCK
US city, I think?

While I do enjoy Hong Kong and would love to visit Tokyo one day, I would never want to live there-live there. Language is not the primary factor because I think I could get by somewhat if I brushed up on my Cantonese, Mandarin and/or Japanese. I prefer areas with more cultural diversity and it's somewhat lacking in many Asian cities. Well, I guess their major cities would have some, but not to the degree you would find in the US, UK or Australian cities. Yeah, the more developed Asian cities are cleaner, but what doesn't kill you only make you stronger. The lower crime rate in Asian cities is pretty appealing, but pros outweigh the cons.

I would love to visit and immerse myself in an Asian city for a few years tops. But, currently, I can't see myself actually living there permanently. But, who knows, things can change. (:
kimi xx
I don't know, that seems like a hard decisions. I LOVE almost all major cities in the U.S and I don't live in a major city, I've been to L.A a lot, but I NYC is way different than L.A. The Asian major cities seems so cool and fun to live at. It's so hard, I think if I had to choose one..I'll stick to the U.S. It seems more diverse.
Pinklett
Eventhough I'm not american and never been there before, i would choose any major us city (NYC) seems awesome over a big asian city like, tokyo, seoul etc.

like mentioned many times before. the diversity. i love that. i was in japan for a few months, and because (i suppose) the country, but also korea, are so isolated, they really do not know the word diversity. japanese really cant imagine me, an asian, can live in europe while holding a non eu passport for example. or had no clue that sushi is eaten all around the world, or that almost 50% of the population in the major cities in western europe are non-european. getting off topic, but its one of the reasons, other is the languagebarriere, why i think its hard for non-japanese to actually live (forever) in tokyo.
but on the other hand its soooo safe, i love it.
but us city for me. no problems living just a few years orso in a asian city
.shirleeang
i don't have any choice but to stay in nyc for now, but i really do want to move to asia sometimes. maybe because i'm sick of newyork? after going to asia for a few weeks, i really didn't want to leave.
i think living in a city permanently is different will be a different experience from visiting for a few weeks though. i think you only experience good points and nostalgia when you live in a place for a few weeks. so maybe permanently living in asia isn't as awesome as i picture it.
i might even miss new york! maybe when i get older i'll move to asia for a bit.
tinatran_
i think i'd prefer living in an Asian city.. like Ho Chi Minh City, Tokyo or Hong Kong.
adrenaline__x
i feel odd saying this
but i cant stand being around too many asian people.
when i was in HK i was literally in a sea of people who looked exactly like me. i even cant tell asian people apart ;[.
i need to be surrounded by all kinds of people.
ArmelleLIN
I was born and grew up in a south asian town, moved to and grew up (now) in an urban city, and now I'm planning to go back to an asian city/town. I guess I'm just not that suited for city life? Things were easier and more peaceful in the asian place.
mekka
Well, grew up in London, lived in Tokyo, visited Seoul for three month alternatively, now living in New York all are wonderful cities some are more expensive than the other, more friendlier than the other, but downright loads of fun, so I can't choose loved them all. Oooooh! also Paris not my favorite place.
