Actually I'm not lol. But who else thinks its silly when people list themselves as a bunch of different ethnicities even if the only (insert ethnicity here) blood they have in them is like from their great great great great great great grandfather or something. It's like they're trying too hard to be ~exotic~. It's not a big deal, but it's just kind of funny seeing that on people's myspaces/profiles. What do you guys think?

And now, for the sake of a funner thread, I'm going to totally contradict myself and adddddd:
List all of the different ethnicities you are! Trace back as far as you can ahaha.

Both my parents are Vietnamese. My grandma on my mom's side is Laos (Laotian? IDK), and my grandma on my dad's side is Cambodian.
So as far as I know, I'm 50% Viet, 25% Laos, and 25% Cambodian.
Eternalx
I'm 100% viet ... but people say I don't look viet haha
The_Username
Filipino, Chinese, Japanese, and 15% Spanish

And in my face it looks like i'm all 4, but I always tell folks i'm Filipino, they're going to have to ask if they want to know why I don't look Filipino which people usually do then I tell them the rest of what's in my blood.

But I consider myself culturally Filipino~American because I was raised in that type of environment. I don't know a thing about Chinese, Spanish, or Japanese culture, so I usually answer "Filipino."
hanulnabi
My parents are Korean, my grandparents on both sides were Korean, and their mas and pas and their mas and pas were Korean. And it continues ad boredom. Now if I really go back, I've been told, with pride, that our clan-seat founder was a renowned general in our peninsular kingdom. He apparently was Hotstuff of his era but from a painting I've seen, I don't see how he could have tickled any lady's fancy. Perhaps he was naturalized! Origin: Tibet! Mongolia! Siberia? China? Persia? C'mon, give me something so I can squeeze in a little something else.

I'm Korean by ethnicity, American by nationality, and a Zombie by night. As exotic as I can get. *yaaawn* tongue.gif
RYUUSEi
Yeah, I kind of agree on the part that people can come off as trying veeeeeery hard to be EXOTIC.

I'm 100% Chinese. ohmy.gif On my mother's side, Shanghai and Malaysia. On my father's side, Hong Kong.
mousse91
well, i'm 50% Japanese from my father and 50% French from my mother and i was born in England O.o
and i don't look Japanese or French........... XD
luv_panda
ahahah lol yeah its cool where people list their heritage from!! Wish I was a bit more mixed...

from what I know...i think I'm 100% Chinese...Mum and Dad are both Chinese and their parents too..

Funny story though..i totally look chinese, like the REALLY REALLY BLACK HAIR (its annoying..can't colour it without bleach) but anways.. the round face etc..and I had a person who is asian don't know where..come up to me and asked if I was mixed...i was like huh....O_O,
vivientww
My great grandma's thai, my mum's pure chinese. smile.gif
So I'm like 80% chinese, 20% thai? wink.gif
jaeka
Lmao that's true.
I'm South American/Irish.

Grandaddy is South American, Grannma is Irish. :)
My mum is mixed obviously.
Dad is like... irish/italian or something... but that's too much detail as said XD
bb51
Hahaha, yeah... i totally agree with you.
Umm... Far as i know - Chinese, Russian and Indian.
Curly
ah totally agree. >_>;;

for me i'm 75% German and 25% Czech LOL well I always say I'm German though. ^^

Let me copy paste something I've found from a friend of my friend's facebook profile...
"I am 1/8th English, 1/12th Malaysian, 1/16th Singaporian,
1/37th Dutch and 1/53rd Italian (b/c my cousin married an Italian) lol
Let me make this clear, NO, I AM NOT WEST INDIAN!!!"

The dude is Indian and he's serious about those descriptions in his facebook... Saaaaad...
How does he get a few amount of "Italian" just because his cousin is married to an Italian?... Hmmm...
If so, I'm even more Italian than him since I eat a lot of Italian foods, I speak a little bit of Italian and my sis is married to an Italian... dry.gif

Anyway I'm not gonna calculate like him but as far as I know I'm mixed Lao, Chinese and Japanese... cool.gif I have Lao pride over all of them.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... I'd love to know how he came up with those numbers! He somehow became 1/53th Italian because his cousin married one?! LOLLLL What a doofus...

I don't know how he came up with all that... You can only go with numbers like 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64 and so on... It's like as if someone in his family split himself in 1/3 before giving birth...
Or he just doesn't know math anymore after 1/16...? But he's an university football player and at this point, he should know those numbers hahaha!

Maybe he counted his other cousin's marriage... but then the Irish part doesn't get 1/53 HAHA! Random lottery numbers he just picked there...

I'm sure if his mom had a blood transfusion from a korean guy who donated his blood before giving birth to him, he would add "I'm 1/3 korean (because my mom had blood transfusion from a korean guy before giving birth to me) lol".

Laos is actually the country and Lao is what we refer to the people. Just like Japan is the country and Japanese are the people. smile.gif

I agree with your thread. It's kind of ridiculous to add the tiny %. Just say what the majority of you are. I think most people aren't going to be full blooded anyways. Who knows what happened in history?
haruo
personally, yeah... i think people try too hard when they do that. one girl i knew from middle school had on her myspace page once...

i'm filipino, white, spanish, chinese, japanese, korean, and black! you know what was funny though? she added a new ethnicity to her list everyday. o_o so it was weird LOL! there was another girl, who listed on her profile that she was filipino, spanish, and chinese... and her sister commented her saying, "oh... i didn't know we were chinese. :B"

but for mee, i trace my origins back to the philippines. however, i am part caucasian thanks to my great grandfather. and on my mother's side of the family, we have roots leading back to spain b/c apparently my great grandmother on that side was the child of a spaniard and filipina. i think it's interesting to look back upon, but i consider myself american. i'm filipino by ethnicity (but i do state that i have white in me, since my last name is a scottish one) and american by nationality ~
pepprmint
ahh, i am 100% chinese, loll, my dad is apparently VERY proud of that fact and never fails to remind me.

although some chinese will include which province or village in china theyre from as their identity, which in that case im 50& siuhing, 25% namhoi, and 25% toisan, lolll. a 100% chinese mutt.
sushie-chan
I'm 90% cambodian, 5% vietnamese and 2.5£ taïh and 2.5% chinese. XD
But i only talk cambodian :x.
oㅅo
Ah... the wonders smile.gif I know this girl who seriously thinks she is 1% Japanese, 99% white. Haha. My great great great great great great GREAT GREAT ~x100~ grandma was Japanese~ So i am japanesee!!~~ n___n;;<3 1% is hardly anything, girlfriend.
converse1918
Well, I do think it's annoying when people say it to sound exotic.
But I am a lot of things myself, like directly from my parents, not tracing back to ancestors.
I am Canadian, Filipino, Scottish, Dutch, Spanish, and Chinese D :
It's alot I know : P
And if I trace back, I'm probably a gajillion other things xD
eternal_bliss
I was wondering where you were going with this. Usually, I only list it if people ask me and even then, it's not always in full detail. And since you asked, I'm 1/4 Japanese, 1/4 Chinese, and a whole mix of European blood in me (like most Caucasians). Mainly French and some Italian. The rest don't really matter. smile.gif

Weaboos. Sigh.

Anyway, all I know of is my Irish heritage... I'm sure there might be some other form of European in there somewhere, but nothing of which my family is aware?
sub.lime
Yeah I find it kinda annoying when people seem to try too hard to be exotic and claim ancestry from every ethnicity they can think of. As far as I know I am Vietnamese.
IckyVicky<3dongbang
lol if it's a long list it's kinda like "okay get to the point"
BUT it's interesting i gues... haha
check; JULIET
Gosh, why do I even care?

I edited this because someone have a problem with me my list. Ergh.
LionAngel
muahahaha!! funny thing is i know a person who is exactly like this!! laugh.gif
anyway, i wanted to know more about my heritage. all i know is that
my grandpa's a japanese but i don't see any japanese with the same last name as mine. DX
i'm a filipina btw.
sixth.
ugh, i agree that it's just silly. especially when they start listing them out in fractions, like 1/4 or 1/8. seriously, if you say you're 1/4 something, i might willingly accept it. but anything more, and i'll just think you're a joke.

as for myself.. both sides of my family are chinese. though, on my father's side there's some mongolian ancestry somewhere. apparently.
wendaYYY
You know, one day, all people are going to be so mixed, that whoever is full blood will be exalted as a deity. (Even if they're butt ugly)

Is it weird, how those who are multi-racial these days are given so much attention? It's like they're more special than the rest of us inferior complete Asians or Caucasians or Africans or Hispanics.

Well I'm Chinese Cambodian. Except people will ask me if I'm Filipina or Islander, to which I respond, "yes, I am".

Whatever, the feeling is great knowing that you don't look Chinese, because people are persecuting all the Chinese people these days for Tibet, even though the majority have played no part in their oppression. It's just the government. bishes.

I'm 50% Mandailing, 25% Chinese & Pakistani.

My mom's mixed and my dad is a Mandailing. But since we live in Malaysia, we just say we're Malays.

It seems that Mandailings have a high level of pride in themselves. Maybe it's because we're considered Batak ; people who eat people.

It was during the old days. Some still practice it . . . I think?

But yeah, I do have a huge amount of pride in me smile.gif Considering I'm mixed! People think I'm Japanase though. Haha.

Whatever it is, my parents rock! (haha)

What's this with that pride of yours?
Why you are proud? What you are proud of??? - Because your parents rock? Because your grandparents from different nationalities had sex with each other??? laugh.gif

Okie, I'm German. 100% German... (Sorry...) But what/how do I feel? - That I'm European? Yes, I am. And I'm a human. A mammal. A woman. .... I AM!

And I'm happy that I have the opportunity to communicate with peeps from alle over this world! Here in soompi.

Thanks!

dianalikesbutts
i'm vietnamese, but recently found out that my grandpa on my dad's side is chinese/cambodian
kfreak
the farthest i back tracked my family is my great great grandmother.
I'm 100% chinese, but it would be cool if there's a mix in my family biggrin.gif
Laile
I think I would feel troubled if I'd be mixed..
Probably wouldnt know where I belong to?

(getting off topic rolleyes.gif)

Sooooooo~~~~~

*drumroll*

I'm 100% German....

amazing, huh? tongue.gif

I like it laugh.gif
spiral_flare
I hate it when people do that. Absolutely hate it.

If everyone in the world goes way back and tries to track what they are, I'm pretty sure each and every one of us is a whole bunch of stuff mixed. I tested this once...I asked my friend (who was born in America and her parents were born in America and her grandparents were born in America...etc etc) what she was and instead of saying American or just white, she'd reply with a whole bunch of different nationalities like "Dutch, German, French, Italian, bla bla bla". It annoys me so much because when people do that they're trying to be unique or want to stand out or something.

Oh wow. You just had to be rude huh? This thread is for fun, as you could see, and I was just trying to be funny. I don't get why you had to ruin all the fun.

Even the person who started this post listed it. Like seriously, I was just explaining. You didn't have disgrace my parents or my grandparents by saying Because your parents rock? Because your grandparents from different nationalities had sex with each other???

If you're happy that you're able to communicate from people all over the world in soompi then you should learn how to RESPECT them first. Seriously.
wendaYYY
referring to above posts ^

LOL all this squabble is still resulting because of different ethnicities.

So much for celebrating ethnic diversity, racism is still rampant.
maharu.
I'm mixed and my dad's mixed as well so I tend to say my grandparent's ethnicity and end there.
I never really thought of it as a big deal, considering being mixed is so normal and everyone's mixed somewhere out there.

But I actually do not like percentages. Anything that says I'm 100% something, I get really annoyed.
Sorry, but you're not 100% anything.

But to clarify I'm 50% Japanese and 50% European mixed. Don't want to mention my European mix.
Raix
If I feel like being exotic, I say that I'm 1/5000th dutch.

Could happen. xD
ninjakke
Chinese: Daddy's full Cantonese and Mommy is 3/4 Fujian and 1/4 canto. according to her anyway
little mixed girl
i hate it when people say that they are 1/3 or 1/27 etc something.
it's not possible!
if you are going to say you are part something, do it right! you can't be 2%, 19%, 35% or 80% anything! dry.gif
ikay
i'm part filipino, part chinese, part spanish..
dad's greatgrandfather was full spanish..
mom's greatgrandmother was full chinese, her greatgrandfather (from the other side of the family) is full spanish..
but i don't look like i'm mixed anyways.. XD my mom does, though.. o.o
xiam9
I'm Filipino, but I really hate it when my fellow Filipinos say they're half united nations but they just look like a regular Juan I see on the streets everyday.
My great grandmother is half-chinese, my great ancestor(I'm 5th generation) is pure Spanish, a priest to be exact, but heck, I look nothing like Chinese or Spanish, just a regular Filo breed.
I don't go around telling people that I'm part this and that because I'm just gonna be embarrassing myself.
I think it's ok as long as you actually look it and your not referring to your ancestor's ethnicity 10 generations from you because otherwise it's just ridiculous.

Everyone should watch national geographic...we all came from AFRICA. period!
...I slept halfway through the documentary but I think that was the gist of it.
yuki526
I am half Japanese (Dad) and half Filipino (Mom). They always think I'm Japanese which is ok. Nobody guess I'm Filipino. Must be the eyes dry.gif
Cokii
I have a friend who is Czech,Italian,Irish,Romanian,German, and Turkish. She always goes around telling people that, and always wonder if anyone really cares that her great,great,great,great,great....grandmother is Romanian. dry.gif

I think it's only interesting when it's relevant to the person. I mean ... I highly doubt you identify with even one or two of those cultures, let alone all of them, so what's the point of listing them all out like that unless we're exploring your genealogy?

I guess it makes sense if someone is trying to explain their hard-to-place appearance, but at some point it really is just fetishising 'exotic' cultures to make yourself seem more interesting.

As far as I know I'm 100% Chinese. But I'm sure if you go back in history long enough the definition of "Chinese ethnicity" gets blurry anyway. Meh.
coldTEARSx3
