Like when you're sitting on a train or public transportation and there's a stranger sitting facing you (especially in close contact). Dang, I find this incredibly awkward especially if it's a long ride. Both of us would have to avoid looking at each other and pretend to look everywhere but the other person. Today, I was at the doctor's office and was watching TV and there was a girl sitting in front of me directly in the way of the TV but facing me. It was awkward trying to watch TV because it felt like she was staring at me. Pretty soon, she had to turn all the way around to pretend to watch TV too. Anybody else find this awkward?

LOL i know what you mean.
in the bus, i need to look outside to make sure i get my stop right. but i hate looking out the window in front of me because seats are there and every time i try to look out the window, i feel like i see that person looking up at me, thinking i was looking at them.
so sometimes i just end up turning my head to look through the window behind me. lol, it's harder though. D:

I was waiting for my friends to come back with my lunch and this guy just came and took one of the chairs from my table that my friend was meant to be sat. I didn't want to say anything and he just sat down and was drinking slowly.. in my mind I was thinking 'Please..please .. why aren't you leaving yet?' and he looked up at me and I just sat there so I just got my phone out and pretended I was texting.

I remember going into a bus and when my cousin and I got in there everyone on the bus was like staring at us. It was like "ohh, damn." Since we were the only Asian there and where my cousin live doesn't have Asian riding buses. It was pretty awkward since everyone living there was African-American. We were the only Asian-American. It was like "All eyes on me of there center of the ring just like a circus." ahahha. It was cool being surrounded by strangers.

I don't really think too much about this.
Some people stare because they think you don't notice, so if you just have a quick glance at them to let them know that you notice their staring, then they might stop. As for the others who stare, and just don't give a damn.... I don't know.

Yes so awkward!!! D: I would put in my ipod and take out my cell phone and play games on it or text. Sometimes on the bus i will just look at my feet or the front of the bus. But then sometimes the person who sits besides me thinks i am staring at them. Just awkward. lol.

yeah.. it is awkward haha.
kind of happened to me yesterday (though, not as extreme as it normally is)
i had to watch customers going into a certain store and take notes about them,
(for marketing class ~.~) it was fine, until this lady decided to sit across from me,
partially blocking my view of the store doors haha.
luckily, she was on the phone and quite distracted,
otherwise i would've looked even more creepy,
glancing up at her and then writing stuff down on my paper haha.
since the angle she was at, it would've looked like i was looking at her,
when i was looking PAST her haha >.<

Yeah, I get what you mean. But if I do take public transportation, I usually just take the bus. Subway too, if I'm out of state. Rarely do I ever take an immensely long train or plane ride. If that is the case, I'm usually with someone I know. So I haven't really experienced that. But for buses, yeah. Awkward.. D:

ROFLMAO! Happens to me plenty of times! XD
I'm on the bus & I love watching the setting around me pass by so I HAVE to look outside.
But I'm not tree-hugger. Just to make that clear.
So there was this guy sitting in front of me & I totally wasn't looking at him.
But when I did notice he was staring back at me I was totally weirded out. :0
He looked like the stuck-up kind of guy.
So he said "Hi" to me & I just smiled.
Then he said, "Am I that good-looking?"
& I was like, "Sure. Whatever you say." But it was totally awkward `cause people were staring at us.
He got up & I thought he was leave but he came & SAT NEXT TO ME. D:
I was soooo creeped out.
So I took out my iTouch & pretended to play games but he was like, "Awww. Are you shy?"
& I just laughed & asked, "Awww. Are you THIS much of a loner?"
He walked away after that but I totally felt bad after that. :\
I just get like that when things are awkward. Sigh.
The dude WAS pretty good looking though. xDDD

Nah, I just stare back. No looks of embarrassment or politeness. I think it's mean to pretend that they're not there.
I hate it even more when it's a really packed bus, and someone has to shove their posterior in your face because they can't sit down.

It's awkward, yeah? I just look out the window. Haha. That's one of my weaknesses -- I can't stare at someone for a long period of time, especially if it's a stranger. It doesn't help if that stranger is a hot guy :D

Lol.. this happens to me everyday

Like for example in the car when I sit in the front seat, the person in the car next to me just HAS to stare at me for a couple of minutes then focus back on the road .__.;;;.

Nov 1 2009, 09:42 AM
Yup. It's always awkward especially in a waiting room at the dentist or something. And we're always so close to each other which makes it ever more awkward because you're suddenly aware of every movement and stuff. Like if they blink, or scratch their leg.
But really, it depends on my mood. Sometimes I feel really confident so when I get into those situations, I don't feel awkward, I make THEM feel awkward. I shuffle in my seat on purpose or stare at something really close to their head to make them think I'm staring at them. It's funny because they get this really nervous look on their face.
LOL @ XoAznDorkXo, I can so relate to that car thing. Especially if I look like crap and don't want to look at anyone. Or if I'm eating. That's the worst.

HAHAHHAAHHA : ) I kinda get what you mean, but in my situations...it's kind of different. See, in the classroom, when our desks are paired up, the person sitting to my right (because I always snag the left seat, which is nearest to the exit : D ) always puts their textbook to their left when we're taking notes, so I always feel like they're copying off of my paper when they're not and quite often falsely accuse them. : )

I think most of the time peopel are just blankly staring ahead, so I don't feel too awkward.. It's only awkward if you can tell they're like staring intently or something and then I just stare back.

man...you bet there's awkwardness. It happends everyday so I got used to it. I find it funny one time taking the train and it was rush hour and it's really pack so this asian kid had no choice but to sit in front of me. I swear the entire ride he kept looking down and avoiding me hahahah I soooo know how he felt

It's not awkward if you make it even more awkward for the other person. Try staring at them and make them uncomfortable.

Happens all the time on public transit : P
I just look at the ground, or find a window somewhere, even if I have to turn around ( :
But most of the time the person is busy or on the phone, so , its not that bad ^__^

Happens to me everytime I take the train to NYC. I usually stare at my phone and check my messages a hundred times or I just close my eyes.
Even weirder, this woman in my old building use to turn around to face me and stare at me everytime we were in the elevator together. She would always stare at me with a smile on her face without saying anything and of course I'd always act like I didn't see her looking at me. Very very awkward .lol

Ughhh it's soooo awkward lol. One of my most awkward experiences-- in high school, for a period of time I always took this one bus home, and there was this guy from my school I always saw. He was a grade lower than me so I didn't know him or anything. But it was just reallyy weird because each time he saw me on the bus he'd stare at me. O__O Either that or steal lots of glances. I'd avoid him like heck and pretend like he wasn't even there. Then one day he came and sat across from me and said, "I know you see me lookin at chuu.." O___O ugh, so. freakin. AWKWARD. I didn't even know what to say to him. So weird, I started taking a different bus home after that day. XD Worst thing was I started seeing him on my morning bus too.

I don't like small doctor/dentist offices either because it gets so awkward and I just wanna sit there and do nothing but stare at one spot until I'm called in. xD

Nov 3 2009, 07:37 PM
LOL that is super awkward! That happened to me before too, that's why I try to strike a conversation cause I hate being awkward with a stranger. I just out of nowhere says "So quiet in here.." Like especially when I'm waiting at a clinic for my appointment. There was this high school guy who came to get his medicine, but he was waiting for his turn, he was after me btw. And the music stopped.. tv turned off... room became silent. Felt like I was going to suffocate cause of the room's quietness. Sometimes I feel like I was going to fart....... and even though it might be low fart sound, I felt like cause of the quietness that small fart sound is going to be a big deal, so I always end up striking the conversation or step outside @_@;; :]

It's not everyday I take public transport, so when I do, it's extra awkward for me to be put in those situations.
The other day I was sitting by myself, but then three chinese guys came in, and since they had nowhere else to sit, they sat where I sat; two across from me, and one beside me. There's not a lot of distance from the seats across, so my legs were basically touching theirs o_o They kept on talking, so that eased the awkwardness, but when one of them left, the two guys across from me stopped talking all together. Awkard silence... bleh. I just stared out the window, or I pretended to sleep.
