i have this friend who "was" pregnant, but she ended up losing the baby at just a month
but she's had another kid before, but here's what's bothering me

she told me they planned the pregnancy, but within the first week of being prego
she just kept having the urge to 'abort' the baby
and she kept talking about how she didn't want to continue the pregnancy
i said that was for her and her hubby to work out
but than she told me that during her first prengnacy, the somewhat of the same thing happened,
only she wanted to kill herself so bad. the urges came day and night
and she seriously wanted to do it, but she didn't obviously.

can depression happen during pregnancy?
is that something she should address with her doctor?
i didn't think it was possible, i've heard of after, but not during...

Well, depression is something you should always address with a doctor.
When it comes to unplanned pregnancy, and even abortion, obviously something like depression is a very real factor. I know during my pregnancy, and months after the abortion, I was very depressed.
For a planned pregnancy, I would have to assume that she was re-thinking whether or not she was ready to have a baby, and change her life forever. I guess if you already take the leap, and then realize you're not ready, that could cause one to be depressed.

I don't know, don't really have much experience in the field, but it makes sense in my head. You should tell your friend to talk to someone who is more qualified than I am haha.

her oldest is 5, and they were happy when she found out she was pregnant
but when the symptoms of pregnancy kicked in within the first few days,
the sudden depression hit and she became withdrawn from everyone.

she wants to have a baby, even now, they're trying really, really hard...
i'm just worried she might gets those feelings again and hurt herself in the process

I agree with PristineNyte--she really needs to talk to someone. I've never been pregnant, but have been around people who were/are--depression during pregnancy can happen--everything is adjusting to carrying a baby, and some women have problems with their hormones. This may or may not be one of the things going on with your friend, but I hope she does talk to her dr about it.

Yes, you can definitely be depressed before pregnancy, during pregnancy, and after pregnancy..

yep, depression does occur before, during and after pregnancy due to the pain, alteration of lifestyle and fearing of coping
During pregnancy, the pain is overwhelming and terrible than before and after pregnancy due to the facts that the woman keeps having contractions, the intensity, duration and frequency are more progressive, fear of being alone. some women might lose ability to contract and push. That's why epideral is so important for delivery.
So tell your friend to make appointment with her doctor and express her anxiety and any issues that she has. The more information she knows, the less anxiety level she might have.

Good luck to your friend

Usually it's hormones. Massive, raging, dumping hormones.

Yeah, this is what I was thinking, too. It could be alterations in the hormone level. You also have to consider her mental status before she was pregnant also. Had she has thoughts of suicide when she was not pregnant? She could be depressed before she was pregnant, and the pregnancy and changes within the body could increase the severity of depression. Not sure though. She needs to seek help for sure.

yes u can have it during a pregnacny. That sad to hear she lost it sad.gif It depends on the person I guess. Tbh the first 2 to 3 months are the worst for u. After that everything feels good but then for some ppl they can feel depress throught the whole thing. Especially if they are sick thru out the whole 9 months.
