by the way, i've made a comparative audio file of his voice, please come to listen and comment
http://youtube.com/watch?v=wBV5uOGYG0o Note: I'm not a die-hard LSG fan. The below are just my personal opinions, my guess... Especially when I'm not even Korean. So please, no bashing, yah? But do correct me if I'm wrong and definitely insane. In a nice way, if at all possible? I was introduced to LSG sometimes last year when I caught a clip of the FT Island/LSG collaboration (that was great, BTW). So I backtracked and saw a lot of his old performances over the years. Needless to say, he was a teenage sensation. Singing comes natural to him.
The entertainment industry is no doubt a tough one. A lot of these young performers (in Korea or US or anywhere) have to continue to evolve in order to survive. When Seung Gi was still mentored by Ms. Lee Sun Hee, you can tell that his singing style mirrored hers. The stage presentation, the vocal, the song delivery, down to the way he dressed ... it was very old school. The strong huskiness in his voice probably reflected hers. It was raw, unpolished, filled with emotions and ... REAL. It was great. I think she groomed him to be the entertainer that he is right now. A lot of it is his own personality, but i do think that she must be responsible for at least a small part. She deserves to be praised and credited.
You can tell that the change began with his 3rd album. A lot of people made a fuss over his short hairdo (which i absolutely love, sorry Vanny

). But the obvious and significant change is his singing style. It could be his choice (to experiment) - which i have no problem whatsoever. I do think that his management and current voice coach do play a part in it. For me, it's still cool. It's just ashamed that he can't use both vocal styles. I guess that's why I always prefer hearing the songs live than via his albums these days. Thank you Vanny for the uploads. You can catch bits of his old singing style in the live performances ... and of course, it also helps that he's a cutie

.
Regarding his songs. At first, I was a little puzzled why he has not attempted to sing his old songs anymore. Well, besides "Because You're My Woman" and "Hanbuh Mando".
BTW, I thought this one
http://youtube.com/watch?v=fFW7ac3-Yms is the best live take on "Hanbuh Mando"

Now, I'm thinking (aka:
guessing) that he probably either (1) can't perform them the same way or (2) he prefers not to revert to the old singing style. It's hard to know. He may not ever sing the old songs the same way again. The timing of his remake album is a little odd. It feels like they're squeezing in an album. It feels rushed and not polished. But i'm not complaining.
For sure, he DID put 2 songs that were performed live in his concert on his latest album: "Only One Love" and "Good Bye". They do not sound the same. Honestly, the older versions are MUCH better than the latter ones. He even sounds a bit pitchy now. They are reworked to a less technically-challenged versions. The power that I love is missing. I can't feel his passion. Seriously, when Seung Gi is in his singing zone, it's like WOAHHH

. It's just a pure joy to hear him in those instances. He really gets into it and you can feel the emotion between the lines. I hope he continues to sing live. He's at his best when he's in front of those screaming fangirls (hehe). Sidebar: he's getting a little bit cutesy these days performing. Can I say that i don't like that? Can we just concentrate on the song please? Like in the old days?

hehehe.
Just a thought on the concept of remakes. You really have to nail remakes. Cause it inevitably leads to comparisons. If you're not telling a new story or give them a different spin, there is no point of repeating them. Unfortunately, Seung Gi didn't quite measured up to the original artists this time. The ones i thought were fine were track 1 and 12. I actually thought track 12 is better than the original. Track 5 is not comparable to PHS's superior one. Whereas, his first Remake album was marvelous. I loved it.
Out of all his later performances (a lot of them are still very good), this unrehearsed imperfect radio recording is a stand-out for me. Not for the polished performance, but for its honesty.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=DRhtMttiDdgTo be fair, he's very busy right now. That begs the question if he actually is dedicated to his training the same way before. Or is singing now no longer top priority? I'm not faulting him but just pointing out the facts. School and work probably take over his life right now. So I do understand that he's not in top shape. I considered him to be a very good singer now, but not necessary an exceptional one. It's a very crowded field, you know?
Do I sound like I'm an obsessed fan for typing this long of a post this early in the morning (w/o coffee yet)? Seriously, I'm not.

hahahaha. I think Seung Gi will be fine. Let's be honest, he might not turn out to be the great singer that we all hope for. The odds are pretty stacked up against him. He has the potential, no doubt. It's going to be interesting to follow him over the next few years. Let's wait and see. No matter what will happen to his singing career, do take to heart that: this awkward teenager with an exceptional voice has turned out to be a fine young man. And I'm not talking solely about his looks. His future looks bright. I wish him lots of luck.
