i watched this Punk Doco on tv a few weeks ago adn was pretty interested in the rise and fall of the genre that is punk. i thought The Clash were an alright band, but havent' heard a lot of their stuff. though, when you associate music with punk, the first thing that comes to my head is Sex Pistols!
punk had its era back in the 70s....but now "punk" to most people is good charlotte and etc... ._.

thats kinda depressing, knowing bands like that are being compared with classics like the Sex pistols and The Clash. i mean really, its great music. i wish it would come back

yeah....'punk' in today's society is seen as something totally different to what it originally was. and if i can remember from the doco, people were saying that even though the genre punk was gone, the rebellious atmosphere is still lingering. they even stated that the Internet was 'punk' because it was rebelling against things.
it would've been so awesome to experience the original 70s punk period though. however i highly doubt that there will be another Pistols in the near distant future...!

Sex Pistols. Props to one of them for poking fun at Green Day.

Sex Pistols has my vote.
Good Charlotte, Green Day, My Chemical Romance, oh gosh, I just cannot stand their music. I hate little kids around school running around flaunting their love for the boys of Green Day or whatever.

yea, its pretty annoying........gets on my nerves even more that they call themselves 'punk'. its just bringing the wrong message of punk music, the REAL music.

SEXXX PISTOLS .
how brilliant were they !
i think it's sad how people like lee harding and simple plan and good charlotte are getting called punk . it's the most idiotic thing . i just hate that people think they're hardcore just because they're running around wearing band tees and badges and black converses .. even my dad thinks they're lame . he saw lee harding (from australian idol) on tv and asked "who's this idiot ?" . when i told him people were calling him punk , he scoffed and showed me a picture of sid vicious and said "this is punk . that guy's pop with piercings" . haha~ when my dad thinks someone's a joke , i really wonder about why other people think they're so awesome .
i mean , how do people go likening this

to this

hahaha EMA i think you might've scared some people from the thread with the pic of Sid and the Pistols. XD
that picture shows the raw energy of the 70s and what it was really like. Punk was all about rebellion and being yourself. however, now you have "so-called" pop/punk people or whatever they call them singing about weird things like 'wasabi'. i think the 21st century has altered a lot of things like technology, lifestyle, etc. but i think people should pay more attention to what they are doing to the music scene.

i'm more scared of lee harding , myself !
i definitely agree that people should think more about the (often heinously awful) impact they're having on music right now .
also , if lee harding disappeared off the face of the earth it would be a much better place .
anyway o_o;; i'll leave the man alone now . sorry for hijacking the thread . eek .
and now back again to the proper music ....

Putting Good Charlotte in the same category as THE Sex Pistols would be a crime against music. For the last time, they're emo, NOT punk.
I'm not much of a punk fan but I do respect the music of the Sex Pistols for defining an era in music and influencing the style of countless artists.
Still, I never really got into the whole Sid Vicious phenomenon. It annoys me seeing emo kids today donning shirts with his pretty mug on them and not knowing a damn thing about him, save for maybe the fact that he was in the Sex Pistols. Sid couldn't sing, at least not too well and definitely not as well as the legendary Rotten, and it's well-known that he couldn't play the bass-guitar that he strummed so vigorously at gigs; the fact that it was the only unplugged electrical instrument out of the whole screaming ensemble gave it away to musicians at least. Sid was a pretty front man, a poster child with all the acessories and attitude but in my opinion, nothing more. It's just one of those phenomenons I could never bring myself to embrace. Basically it comes down to this:
If Rotten is the voice of punk, then Vicious is the look
But at any rate, Good Charlotte and the likes can't hold a candle to them, and from the way things are going, more likely than not: Never.

prequality, i definitely agree with what you just said, couldn't have put it better myself! however, i also think the thread has gone a little off the tracks, so maybe its time to steer it back to the original topic, which was discussing who your favourite British Punk band was.
i know of punk bands in general (no thanks to that interesting doco!) but i haven't actually been properly introduced to the British Punk scene. [you're probably thinking what the hell i'm doing in ths thread, but it can't hurt to learn more about this genre!

]. so any punk bands i should check out apart from the Pistols or the Clash, would be helpful!

you should check out the toy dolls, those guys are brilliant, they're lyrics are halerious, and i realize i spelled taht wrong. lol. but anyways, i love they're music, its really interesting, its more satire than anything, but its really great, they play well, and rock well. listen to them!!

lots of love for the sex pistols in here eh...
i have, however, heard much hate for them as well for being a poseur band, one of the first bands to be "machine" made. they were like the britney spears of that time

packaged by their agency so they apeal to kids of that time.
of course..those are not my opnioins...just stating what i heard. but from my i read, they are a pretty well packaged band, both with a sound that fit the time and a look(thanks vivienne) that fit that time.
no one added the Ramones? (they are americans...so...)
more positive things were said about them being the real deal in punk music history
i dont listen to punk music so i cant make my own judgements
