I know a lot of people hated Green Day even back when their first albums came out around 15 years ago, but I was always a huge fan of them. Granted, I'm only 16 now, but I honestly don't remember the time I started liking them. It was just like I always did. Their music obviously isn't great or anything, but it was fun to me. Such songs as "Longview" and "Walking Contradiction" I just really enjoyed listening to. Then you know, in 2004 with their release of "American Idiot" they completely changed themselves and their music, and now I hate them more than any band I have ever hated in the history of music. Now it seems like all their fans are a bunch of pre-teens who think "American Idiot" was their debut album, and think "there liek s0o0o coooool!!!".

I'm sure they still have some of their old fans. But I'm also sure (or at least I hope) people hate them now more than ever. I remember seeing them on TV a little over a year ago.. they were talking about their fans, and how a number fans bailed after they released that God forsaken album. I believe they said those were not their "loyal" fans, ect. Which actually made me laugh more than anything. I think they're a completely different band now, which is why I, and other Green Day fans don't like them anymore. After I heard them talking on TV I just wanted to say to them "No sh*t a lot of your fans left you, you dumbasses. YOU SUCK NOW.", plus about a hundred more vulgarities.

Ehh. End rant.
akira53
I never really liked them
their songs are horribly overplayed now (well, they used to be)
LucasBunny
I luv them!
They are sooo cool!

I want to stomp on all of their faces.

Dude have you seen their music video for "Jesus of Suburbia"? I swear, I wanted to throw myself in front of a bus after I saw it. It's the ultimate emo, suicidal, angsty, music video. It's like the anthem for all depressed teens who hate their parents and listen to crap like Simple Plan and Good Charlotte. It's about 7 minutes of some angsty teen running around acting stereotypical.

Him: "Did you f*ck him?!!!"

His girlfriend: "Yeah, I f*cked him!!"

(Guy runs around all angry, messing up rooms, cutting his hand open, and smearing blood onto a wall. Meanwhile, his stupid girlfriend is sitting there crying, masscara running down her face, and she's wearing a tiara- wtf???)

It just causes me physical agony to listen to anything from American Idiot or to watch any of their music videos from it.

^I haven't seen it, but the way you described it, I think if I saw it I would keel over.

green day pains me .

they've totally sold out i reackon . they were never really "unknown" , but now everyone knows who they are and they're really playing for the cameras now , so to speak . people talk about american idiot as though it was some amazing political statement , when all it was was something they knew they could sell albums to all the "omG iM sO in2 PolitiKz i haTe bUsh" kids .
prequality
I reckon everything went downhill with the release of American Idiot. Before that they ranged from average to pretty damn alright.
LucasBunny
I noticed many people hate Green Day these days...but how come there so succesful???
petit_charat
well judging by the replies of these posters, i'd say they're popular due to the emo sensation that is sloyl brain-washing every teen across the world (luckily i am no infected!). and they've got a lot of radio-play and have a "cool" fashion sense, so kids go buy their albums in hope to become them someday.

i must admit that some of their songs are alright, but they soon got annoying as i heard them everywhere, on the radio on the telly even on people's damn iPods! i soon got sick of their American Idiot album, so i went back to their Dookie and Insomniac days and listened to their Superhits album. but even then, i still could not believe that this small average band of the 90s shot to unbelievable fame in the 21st century. their music was never the same ever since they were being splashed about in the media every 5 seconds.

i wouldn't say that i HATED them because 'hate' is a strong word to use. i'm disliking them, to put it in a polite and civilised way.

sure i have a problem with their fans being all tenny-boppers and just embarassing themselves thinking their REAL green day fans but its thier option to do that and i still kind of respect that they've chosen that path. (i'm trying this new thing where i try not to critisise too much, its bad for my health tongue.gif)

Dookie was rad. Nimrod wasn't too bad.

They've definitely changed, but you can still hear the small nuances that is Green Day. I guess playing to the trends is how it goes, it's not about playing (good)music anymore. Same goes for rap and how its degenerated into the trendy 'gangster' rap.

I listen to some emo music but honestly, this whole black dyed hair gothy emo look is depressing.
PockyUpNose
don't like them. Are they Emo rock?. Because they seem like pop rock with repetitive chorus.

THe 7 minute long video was gay...it's so gay i can't express how gay it is with proper words.
broken.wings
I think they're ok but their songs are overplayed now.
wishywashy
I think GREEN DAY rocks!!!! I think i only noticed them since minority came out. Since then i have been aware of their music. I really liked their American Idiot album. I even brought the dvd concert. I dont really buy these sort of music. Plus Billy joe looked quite fit when he was younger!!!
MzBeciko
i dont love them
i dont hate them
ooo_it's_mE
I can't stand Green Day!
NEVERland
o.O...Emo hatred is the new thing.

I've never understood why the "original" fans are so anal about bands making it big/mainstream ("selling out") and attracting "poser/wannabe" fans. Music is music. If you were a singer, you would jump at the opportunity to be part of a major record label wouldn't you? so MORE people could listen to your music?

I know what you mean. I guess fans think that with mainstream success comes crappier songs, though.

I'm not really a fan of Green Day, but I don't HATE them. I just don't like the American Idiot album, and I can't say I've heard much of their other work.

...though I am a bit irked about the constant praise and adoration they receive when there's so much better music out there. But whatever, people can listen to what they want.
myv_rox
Don't really know that much about Greenday.. I think their music is all-right, def. not SING-ALONG material, but sometimes worth listening to. The "Jesus of Suburbia" music video is EXTREMELY emo-ish, but come on! How hot is Lou Taylor Pucci? Anyone here seen "Thumbsucker?" Don't worry, he's not really an emo! lol Yah... off-topic, once again.

But I'm not a singer, I'm a fan. And as a fan, it pisses me the hell off that Green Day changed that much. Like I said, it's like they're a completely different band. Maybe they should have thought about their fans.

And as far as the whole mainstream thing goes, that kind of stuff doesn't bother me. Green Day has been mainstream pretty much since the release of Dookie in 1994. It's just that now they're nothing like they used to be and they're annoying as hell.
x_lalalala
They aren't that bad. There music is worth listening to.

LOL. are they over rated?

^ Well said -_____-

I don't like their music, and if I hear "American Idiot" one more time... ph34r.gif...

But hey, to each their own O_O...

do like i do yen ... stay away from mainstream radiostations biggrin.gif + video hits.

I barely hear ANY Green Day. so i don't have as much hate as do others. But i must say, there image has always been pretty much as is, it's just the 'emo' look has become mainstream, about 7(??) years ago it was the skatie look.

one of the things i admire about bands i like is the fact that rather than changing who they are to fit in with what people want , they just run around playing songs and hoping someone will like them for who they are now . green day started off like that , but they found their niche in the market and they're really trying to fit into it , rather than trying to shape it .

i don't care if a band i like goes mainstream (although admittedly i'd prefer if they didn't . i'm a jealous fan o_o) , it's the way it happens that i think is important . it's all about whether they change for the scene , or the scene changes for them . if you're not changing the music scene , or at least trying to , you're pretty much better off sitting about at home , instead of pretending you're a musician .
Iridescence
I mean.. their songs are pretty cool in the beginning, but when they're overplayed so often, you start to get sick of the song. Then you just can't stand listening to them anymore.
Mirae-chan
i admit theyre a bit overrated now ..

i never really listened to them, like a few songs .. theyre alright, not crazy over them, not pissed as hell at them either
knockblock
I hate Green Day. They're a bunch of jackasses.
Metamorphosis
whoooaaa
i never knew that many people hate green day

i don't know them all that well
but base on the song i've heard
theyre not bad at all tongue.gif
HKS457
through out my life, i always had a friend or 2 that likes greenday alot, so i been basically know some of their songs. i like them better then lots of other mainstream artist, but i cant say they are the best because after all, i dont really listen to anything besides chinese, japanese, korean
the last hour.
They're alright. Once I played there music over and over I got bored lol.

Agreed. Agreed.

American Idiot pisses me off. I love how people who would never listen to Green Day suddenly liked them after American Idiot and their old fans get pissed off if anyone even mentions that album.
RockStar17
The Jesus of Suburbia disturbed and confused me a bit.
Who seriously "vandalizes" a bathroom in a convenient store/gas station though?

Only to be painted over too.
HKS457
whats so bad about american idiot anyway? 0_0
its a good song thats straight to the point, besides its not like the lyrics isnt true phew.gif
EMA
it's that it's a bs marketing thing , rather than proper lyrics with a real message . they're just playing what people want to hear , whilst getting publicity with their "outrageousness" and w/e .

plus they're always in black now and they just look lame ..
mist65
WHOA i didn't know a lot of people hate green day.

i never really knew green day before the american idiot album so i can't compare their past songs to the present. but theyre not that bad (at first).. heck, i even have their album. their music is lively but i don't like the lyrics that much. i don't listen to it anymore though. i got sick of hearing their songs all the time.

hmm i havent seen the jesus of suburbia video.. but reading the description x__x i should see for myself.

theyre not the best..
and not the worst either.
darkmiracles27
I think my school will be the perfect example of teeny boppers who think Green Day are a new band and that American Idiot is their first album. Haha, it's hilarious because I remember years back listening to Dookie and they will be like "Eww who is Green Day?"

I admit it's pretty atrocious seeing the juniors at my school with Green Day plastered all over their folder and claiming that they are "punk".

I'm not really fond of Green Day anymore... Not because they have gone "mainstream" or whatever but because I am just not fond of their music anymore. It's also beyond me why they would change their style but to be honest with you, I couldn't care less. If I don't like the music, I don't listen to it. As easy as that. I'm not going to waste my precious time and start whinging about how ungrateful Green Day are for selling out.. Plus, I was never a die-hard Green Day fan anyway.
epunx99
it's just sick that you get to bash green day. if u are really a fan u get to stick with them through and through.

im 21 and i have been a fan since i was 7 with kerplunk and believe me they have evolved from snotty teens to real immature adults and im still a fan of them even if they have sold out. i guess i am sticking to the music. i dont really idolize them as individuals but i admire them for the music they make. it is the most important thing.

American Idiot is not the best album for me, it's kerplunk, nimrod and warning that got me going but there are songs in american idiot that are pretty much okay.

Dont Hate Green Day because they are Corporat SellOuts. They are still good and getting better.
bluecarrot
my sister thinks the lead singer looks like a leprachan.. (however you spell it)

i still dig 'HOLIDAY'.. but i think 'september ends' has been overplayed...

No, they suck now, and I get to bash whomever I'd like.

^ i agree .

epunx99 , you yourself said they've turned into immature adults "even if they have sold out" , and that american idiot isn't the best album - what's there left to like ? nobody's obligated to continue liking a band , wtf . it's not a privelage for us to like them , it's a privelage for them to have fans at all .

HAHAHAHAAHA. Err... why not? That's precisely why I hate them now. They've changed their music and their style and have gained mass popularity because of it. They've turned into some crappy emo band now. They were much better when they were immature twits doing rock songs about dookie and calling people dirty twats. Their music sucks now.
petit_charat
i agree, they're so into the whole emo scene and taking advantage of this new trend. their songs used to be all fun and stuff, but i guess being more immature and in their 30s they want to talk about politics and whatnot, since its a big issue nowadays in music.
but going emo and that MV for 'jesus of suburbia' is now one fo the most popular anthems for teenagers. seems to be sending the wrong message to them, saying its alright to cut yourself in a public bathroom cos it makes you look cool and whatnot. the emo trend is gonna die soon and green day will probably be the thing of the past.
sorry to sound so negative, but thats just my two cents on this whole emo/greenday thing.
jcraze
If i had to make an example of a band sounding different, seemingly more mainstream, i'd have to say The Offspring

I used to think their music was awesome, but after Americana and beyond their music changed. But for me, i didn't see them change because they wanted to get the "lil cool kids", but rather they just evolved to adifferent sound.

It's probably why I feel green day screwed its old school fans over, they chose the way of falling to trends.
NewsStrive717
they do repeat a lot of their music, but I don't have a problem with them, I like some of their songs.
Stephen
i'm so sick of this emo crap these teens really need to cut the crap out and shut the hell up
Jbin
Well Green Day is just okay to me, i mean their old stuff was so much better than now, they put too much makeup they are influencing younger teens to be very emo now. My neighbor who is 13 rite now is (listen to this now) WORSHIPPING AND OBSESSED with them. Every day he talks nuthing but them and it ANNOYS SOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!! Here is some proof, he is 1 of those preteens who treats Green Day as a new band, but still knowing a little of their history, and that just sickins me. He calls himself "punk" just b/c he listens to that band "only" from the rock music category. He wasn't like this before he heard American Idiot, infact it was him who made me not appreciate them anymore.
lmnyuta24
I loved their older albums but they're annoying now. I hated "American Idiot"
FatallyYours
I still like GD. All the more power to them for "selling out". They've toiled around long enough that I hope they pull in as much $$ as they can. They deserve to cash in, monetarily as well as laudatory.

Actually it's kind of funny that this would be the second time they've sold out. I remember when it was a big deal that they signed to a major and all the punks called them sellouts. Then this.

As far as the music goes, you can't expect a band to make the same album over and over again. That would be boring.

But whatever, right? If they piss you off, then they piss you off.
PerfektSituation
They're not bad. They're okay.
