Do you like it? I like it to a certain extent. I don't like the hardcore bands like The Fall of Troy, Atreyu, and As I Lay Dying. I go for mostly the softer to almost hardcore. If you've never tried emo out, heres a few testers for you
Soft- Jimmy Eat World- Your House
Jimmy Eat World- The Middle
Harder...- A Thorn for Every Heart - 99 With An Anchor
Emery- So Cold I Could See My Breath
And harder...- Underoath- Reinventing Your Exit
Circa Survive- I've Been Dying to Reach You
Saosin- I Can Tell There Was An Accident Here Earlier
Almost too hard..- Atreyu- Right Side of the Bed
Go ahead, try it.

Atreyu makes me want to stab myself in the ear.
i dont think Jimmy Eat World is emo.
and there is a difference between emo, hardcore, screamo, posthardcore, etc.

Jimmy Eat World in my opinion is emo. I honestly don't think its the screaming part of a song that makes it emo, I think its more based on the lyrics. Hardcore, screamo, post hardcore are just sub genres of Emo.

Emo = Emotional
There is 2 different kinds of meaning of Emo!
- Emo (music), a subgenre of
hardcore punks- Emo (slang), a slang term used to describe a wide range of fashion styles and attitudes somewhat affiliated with emo music
On to the topics
These are bands that are also considered as so called emo:
-Dashboard Confessional began to popularize a more dramatic and personal style of "emo"
-My Chemical Romance, including their use of makeup (particularly black eyeliner) and longish hair covering the face
Fall Out Boy, AFI, Green Day

As far as fashion goes, I can't really tell emo from goth or even from punk nowadays. They all start looking pretty much the same to me.
In terms of music, my personal theory is that the rock subgenre we all know as emo today are deviants/sub-branch combinations of the punk and hardcore subgenres. Still, it gets a little vague and overlappish at times and I can't be bothered to nit-pick these days.
The closest I'll get to emo music would be The Cure. They're generally regarded as post-punk from a chronological perspective but they don't really have a classification. Personally, I reckon they're one of the earlier incarnations and fore-fathers of the emo-subgenre in recent history. Above that, they didn't need massive distortion and pre-pubescent screaming to get a good message across

I don't like the term emo because everyone has a different view of what's considered emo music and what isn't. Therefore... I have no clue if I like emo music -__-

I feel there's a misconception on what 'emo' is.
it's progressed into a stereotype, but really, it doesn't mean 'emotional' or the kids with eyeliner and hair-over-one-eye bit. it's just a genre of music that sometimes overlaps with other kinds. it's a word that's becoming abused, haha.
jimmy eat world is more pop punk.
as well as fall out boy and green day.
the mars volta is more rock/progressive.
circa survive is indie/experimental.
underoath is more hardcore/screamo/alternative.
i don't know, haha.
completely random side note, i'm seeing a lot of the bands mentioned in this thread in concert @ the bamboozle [new jersey].

Emo means emotional hardcore music. I don't know when it became a style though....
it became a style when seventeen magazine featured two styles for guys and gals===
you know a little page for 'how to dress emo' and 'what emo'...it was like a small insider on it---
after that---everyone started popping up with dark hair-- smaller pants size--the swoop--- striipes--and i forgot--
i remember because i wanted to start dressing like it--except---i had no clue on what emo was..so why bother dressing like it..when you don't even know what type of genre it is--- also ..i couldn't wear small high water pants--
HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS IS EMO--i'm sure everyone knew that-- i dont like them though--in my opinion..they don't do so good live-- ^^;; (sorry HH fans)

Get Up Kids - Something To Write Home About
Sunny Day Real Estate - Diary
