[because I didn't see this posted already]
Dir en grey is a popular Japanese rock band formed in 1997. Starting out as a Visual Kei act the group has since experimented with various styles while maintaining the steady lineup of Kyo (京) (vocals), Kaoru (薫) (guitar), Die (guitar), Toshiya (bass) and Shinya (drums). Their current music has become hard to categorize, falling somewhere between Industrial, Gothic rock, and Pop with influences from metal and Shock among others.

I love Dir en Grey! They are one of my favorite bands, and definitely my favorite j-rock and Visual Kei band. Can't wait till the US release of Withering to Death comes out!

Dir en grey was great until Vulgar. With Vulgar they went straight downhill for me and I won't listen to any from Vulgar, on. I will say that they're an excellent band (they were my first Jrock band, way back when) but, their new musical direction...sucks.

I used to like them... now they are just freaky.
Oh and by the way...
Does anyone notice similarities between the songs "Bboy 2000" by Crazy Town (feat. KRS One) and "Obscure" by Dir en Grey?

I LOVE Dir en Grey. My favorite album was Gauze but Macabre's great too!!! I'm not too thrilled with the screaming but I think the band's just keeps getting better. They've recently had a concert here in LA and it was GREAT! Of course, I wasn't allowed to go, but my friends went and they said it was awsome.

http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/feature/art...t_id=1002345276article about Dir en Grey on Billboard. they might tour with Korn this summer in the U.S. Pretty awesome if they do and they'll probably explode unto the mainstream music scene.
I went to the LA concert a few weeks back not knowing their music and I was blown away.

Hahah. People who aren't used to Diru immediately gets turned off and they're like, "Who? Dir en GAY?"

;; What kind of a comeback is that?! Lolsz.
Nevertheless, they're the first JRock band I listened to, and I like both their old and new stuff. Vulgar and Withering to Death for me! ^^;;

^ Yeah, I'd totally go too. Too bad though - but I hope they do plan to have a concert here.
Bleh anyhow, Dir en Grey's great - they're my all time favourite band, though I'm not digging their current style (it's sort of Americanised IMO). I miss their older styles. Oh well.

but anyone wanna recommend me what they'd consider to be dir en gray's BEST song?
i'll check it out.

Aoi Tsuki is their best song in my opinion followed by the remix of Akuro no Oka (It's off of Kai, anyone remember the actual remix name?).

Dir en Grey is really good. Not my favourite band, but they're incredibly talented, and their old stuff is amazing.
I don't like their new scream-o stuff either. Kyo had such a nice voice. Now he's been smoking for so long and screaming more. Just kind of ruined it for me. o_o;

Are you serious?

Where and when?
I don't really want Diru to become mainstream in the US. I don't want
most J-rockers to become mainstream here. But all this touring with Korn, plans of selling their stuff at Hot Topic... I dunno how to describe it, but I don't like it. It's like I'm selfish and wanna keep my fandoms at a fairly unknown level (around here at least) y'know? Anyone understand what I'm saying?

Yeah, I totally understand what you are saying.

It's like, I've found Dir en Grey on my own and I appriciate them because they're great, not because everyone else around you is listening to them. I don't mind sharing songs with friends and I love showing off (like wearing their T-shirt or purposly doing a project that I can play their song in the background) but them being mainstream is... eh.
My biggest fear is everyone getting the wrong idea about them. They're not METAL, they're VISUAL KEI!!!
Yeah, maybe I'm getting too into this.

they're not really Visual Kei anymore.. which i like more.. I like their change. I love their old stuff as well, but I think Dir gets better all the time, as time goes you know... well i like Kisou and vulgar more than WTD.. but I like WTD more than Missa or Macabre, or Gauze.. so.. I could say i am into this screamy era or whatever some call it

And someone was speaking about Australian fans of Dir.. I've heard of many australian fans

I am not sure if Dir will turn out into something crappy now that it has been in the US and coming to europe again.. I hope it wont affect their personal style of music and so forth.. that's what I'm afraid of...
that they'll become some crappy band, and try to impress western ppl :/

What is the difference between metal and visual kei?
A big difference. Visual Kei isn't really a music genre, it's more of a look because VK has no particular sound. Dir en grey used to have Toshiya and Shinya dress like girls due to their feminine feautres and everyone else dressed in lace, pvc, leather, etc. They wore long, colorful extensions and lots of make-up and that's the genre that they were put under. Now that they have stopped dressing up in the VK style and their music took more of a western turn, they are under the genre of metal, which is true for their style of music. They're always done hard rock with some soft songs but, at that time (late 1997-2000/2001) VK was a huge genre and many indies and major bands were in it.
VK bands now are...Gazette, Antique Cafe, Phantasmagoria, BLOOD, Alice Nine..

Hey all. This is my first time posting in this Diru thread. I usually go to the one in the "other celeb photos" forum. More activity and info in there. But I would say my favorite Diru song is Ain't Afraid to Die lol. I know its one of their slow songs but I just think its so moving. Other songs I like (off the top of my head) are obscure, drain away, [KR] cube, dead tree, and cage.
They're touring with Korn in America this summer and all the dates and venues are posted if anyone didn't know

And they have a new single coming out in July. I'm so excited!

I love all their songs. I'm a very strong fan, but that's kind of obvious by now. I have to admit, I do prefer their stuff before Withering to death. but that doesnt stop me loving the album to - well - death XD
My favourites have to be Mitsu to Tsuba/Tsumi to Batsu, Mazohyst of Decadence, Zakuro, mushi, 24ko cylinders, umbrella, OBSCURE, C and Machiavellism.

Vulgar was the album I fell in love with. XD; I think Obscure's the best, but that's only my opinion.
What first got me into them was their "Ain't Afraid To Die" PV. After that was an mp3 of "Cage" and then there was that PV of "FILTH" and then...
Yeah. @_@ They were my very first JRock band... so I support their work a lot.
