i'm going august 13-15! (group 11)
aggiesbaby
Transfer might not be able to dorm it since UCD is enrolling close to 6000 new students and doubles are going to turn into triples in Segundo and Tercero. Housing is now only guaranteed a year again (this year was 2). Go to advising if u don't want to register during open registration when no good classes are left. Trust me....we begin our Fall registration this week which means we get first dibs at all the good stuff.
sandy k
questionnn!

i got my housing app stuff today and i was wondering what meal plan i should get..
i read it through but i'm really not sure how much i'll be eating per quarter and i don't want to over/underpurchase. on an average, what plan do most people (first year, on-campus students) get?
aggiesbaby
I cant remember what all the meal plans were other than the 180, so could u list them for me please? I had to downgrade my meal plan every quarter because my swipes always rolled over. Munch money is also great so definitely get a plan with munch money but that u must use it all by the end of the year since it doesn't roll over ur sophomore year. Any unused SWIPES at the end of the year turn into munch money at $2 a swipe. You can use that at the beginning of the next year at the Silo or any other on campus places that take munch money.
LYRA
The link to meal plans is here. I think I'll end up getting the budget saver because I'm bringing a mini fridge with me biggrin.gif
Jay Chou
my friend says the dining halls are actually pretty good.
lol looking forward to try, so i can compare it to the crap food here in ucsc.
aggiesbaby
Well...I'd go to with the Aggie Advantage. Having a mini-fridge doesn't really make a difference even if you get the lowest meal plan. Sometimes you'll also end up swiping in friends and stuff as well.

The DCs in Segundo and Tercero are good. Segundo's new DC opened up this year so it's better than previous years and Tercero's always had the reputation of the best DC. Cuarto's DC sucks big time.
foeshunkooky
i know this thread is for ucd-bounds but i just had to give u guys a heads up about something u might enjoy. theres this sushi place called fuji's in downtown davis. it's supposed to be really really good. i haven't eaten there yet cuz there's always a line to get inside the place [that's how good it is...u have to wait to actually get inside of there]. i only know about the place cuz i live about 10 min away from ucd. well i hope u guys have mucho fun there this fall!
Jay Chou
^ been there.....yes its good XD
babybeck
Hm....

Is Segundo a good place? Lots of people have been recommending it..
Aren't we suppose to recieve a letter about info on our dorming, and etc.? I haven't recieved it yet.
sandy k
another questionnnn!
i have been looking at the residence hall pictures and the segundo part looks nice (or at least one part of it)..

do we get to choose which actual place we live in?
aggiesbaby
Fuji's is such a popular place with UCD students is because of the lunch buffet (and located extremely close to campus). It's crowded between 11-2pm since everyone is up for an all- you -can -eat sushi. Fuji's isn't the best place in Davis though. Sushi Nobu located in East Davis and Mirai located in Anderson Plaza is much better than Fuji's.

No, you don't get to pick where you live. You're allowed to put down the preference of dorms you want (Segundo, Tercero, Cuarto). Where you end up is completely random, decided by the computer. Segundo is nice if you end up in the Alder, Thompson, or Miller dorms but there's also the possibility of getting the old ones next to the 3 dorms I listed or the Regan dorms. Primero Grove used to be offered to freshman but they've axed that and now its on-campus apts for continuing students. Segundo, located Northwest of campus, holds the most number of on campus residents so it's always a busy place. Tercero, located in the middle of campus, and Cuarto is a lot more peaceful (which was perfect for me when I lived in Tercero and Cuarto is off-campus so it's kind of inconvenient at times). If you sent in your SIR by May 1st, you are guaranteed housing so you should be receiving your packet soon- unless you're a transfer, which means freshman have to be accomodated first.
Jay Chou
^ lol i didnt know that. i thought you could pick the halls within each area.
i dont know if it's true, but most asian ppl tend to choose tercero or segundo?
guwakmui916
what is the reservation fee? why is it 450$?

i checked online and it turns out that transfer students can only live in castilian hall??
that sucks because i heard ppl drink there a lot.

but if i live in apartments, then i won't be able to know anyone! =(

first of all, CONGRATS on your acceptance here and welcome! i, too, am a transfer student and this is my first year at UCD. i'm also majoring in biological sciences. horray.;D

north castilian hall consists of only transfer students, but i've seen and heard other [lucky] transfer students who live in the cuarto area, but are living in non-castilian halls, i.e., oxford circle. i recognize some faces from my upper-division classes and sometimes i see them at the segundo dining hall, so i think they live in the segundo area, but how can that be when they're transfer students like myself? hmrph. that's SO unfair because i HATE north castilian hall with a passion. do people drink here a lot? YOU BETCHA. i think this is one of the main reason why i've been doing so poorly and why i got terribly ill and homesick last quarter. no, it wasn't because i was drinking, but it's because of the fcuking bastards i have to put up here. to me, it feels like...it's either you drink here or they don't socialize with you and i'm like...WTF? like i give a shiz. i came here to get a damn degree, not to get wasted and throw my future away. they usually drink here on friday nights and the weekends. bleh. besides that, they're usually loud in and out of the pool on the weeknights. my mistake was TRYING to study with all that noise in my single room.-.- i wanted to live in the segundo area because it's A LOT NEWER and nicer. there'll still be parties and drinking, but i think to a much more less extent since it's right there on campus and i think the RAs are actually doing their jobs unlike the ones here. dry.gif speaking of RAs, all you transfer students...if i were you, i WOULD NOT live here. why? one of my suitemates' friends here will be an RA next year and omfg, he is such an arrogant fat prick. my friends from the jc and i loathe him because he always thinks he's better than the rest of us.-.-

yes, the dining hall SUCKS. maria, one of my friends from the jc who couldn't tolerate the food and people here anymore and left the first quarter, once said, "doesn't this place make you feel lonely? it looks like a damn retirement home." that's why i hardly eat there. i'm always at the segundo dining hall because it's so huge, so nice, so much more livelier, so much more of a variety to choose from, and i don't have to see those fcuking bastards who live by me. i only eat here in the mornings when i don't have to see those people and plus, i just have a bowl of cereal and some fruit, so it's not like i need fancy to eat.

arhmmm...that's all my ranting about this filthy place. LOL. imo, if you wanna meet crazy people and don't mind living in a dirty place like this, then c'mon in! the only reason why i chose this path was because i can't cook ph34r.gif and i wanted to experience "the dorm life." from the stories i've heard and seen...i always thought i was going to have a swell time here, but i guess i was wrong. mad.gif i should've known though...i don't know about you, but as a transfer student and being at this level, i just want to complete my studies and get on with life. i don't have time to socialize with these jerks here. it's not like i'm anti-social. i prefer people who have similar interests and goals at me. i've met a lot of good people here, but they were only through school and my classes. there's no way i could ever befriend these people here. i've tried through my suitemates (who love getting attention from the ugly, pathetic losers here), but they always poke fun at my studying habits and whatever. that's why i'm desperately counting the days till i can get the freak outta here, which is still 3 or so weeks away from now. sad.gif

so jay, you made the right decision on NOT living here.;] aish, you're the famous JAY CHOU...everybody wants to meet you! lol. jp~ don't worry...you'll meet a lot of people on campus! i was surprised most of the people i could talk to at school were transfer students, but it's understandable since we're still new to this place and we're taking the same classes, etc. i didn't think there were that many here. anywhos, since you're a transfer student, the application will automatically sign you up for a suite. crazy.gif so can't do much about that. i called in last year before coming here and they do that because freshmen get priority over transfer students and my guess is they want the freshmen to stay close by to campus. also, they put us transfers in suites to get us ready for apartments or wherever after we leave this place. but like somebody mentioned early, which reminds me of an article i read in the aggie last week, i think it's true how they probably won't have room for transfer students because of the huge incoming class this year.O.O
aggiesbaby
The $450 is considered to be a downpayment on housing. It'll be deducted from your bill.

Drinking is going to exist wherever you attend college- not just Davis. It's unavoidable....I don't party at all, but I have tried alcohol. No one's going to force you to drink and you can go to parties and socialize without ever having to touch alcohol.

And yep...transfer might not even get dorming this year with the huge incoming class. University Housing is turning a lot of the double rooms into triples just to accomodate everyone. It'll be tight for you newbies.

It's also possible to meet people even if you're not in the dorms. I've met some awesome people in classes (BUT, it's a lot easier in the liberal arts classes since they tend to be smaller lectures: I'm a history and chinese double major with a poli sci minor) and we definitely stay in touch.

hehe very helpful advice!
haha i feel bad for you. maybe you should have asked around before deciding to stay in castilian hall =P
yea at first, i thought i would have trouble making friends if i didn't live in a dorm. but turns out ppl told me that it's not true. they told me to join clubs like HKSA and CSA where i can meet some hk/cantonese ppl, and after that, my social network will expand gradually. so yea i'm not worried about that anymore.

but anyway, i've already found an apt in primero grove with two friends staying there. they're gonna kick out one of their suitemates and let me move in and live with them haha. but will ucd find out? i checked and primero grove only lets contiuning students live there. but hopefully they wont find out coz my friend is in charge of the rent....i'll just pay my rent to him lol
whats your view of primero grove? if you've ever been there...
btw where are you staying next year?

and yea it sucks that freshmen students get the best halls. but oh well i dont really care, coz i didn't have any good experiences living with someone else in the ucsc dorms (my roommate last year and this year are both white ppl lol) sleep.gif
i'm gonna get my own single room in primero grove....woot!

yea but drinking in castilian hall is pretty crazy, especially if you're the type that don't drink.

did you meet ppl in lectures or discussion sections mostly? just curious...
seems like it would be hard to meet someone in lectures...

i knoooooooow. i pity my own self. sad.gif i didn't know i was going to end up here, so that's why i didn't bother asking and i really didn't think it was going to be this horrible.-.- i've heard of primero grove, but never been there, so can't really say much about it. but that's great how you'll be getting your own room! i have my own room, but it's still not good enough for me.-.- one of my other inconsiderate suitemates is ALWAYS watching tv and then her roommate will come and watch with her and that one laughs and talks REALLY LOUDLY.x.x one thing i've learned from that incident...try to room with other people who have similar majors as you.--; they're both liberal studies major. i'm staying in these really nice apartments by the martketplace (north davis) next year and OMFGZ i am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO looking forward to it!!! it's pricey, but whatevers...like my mom said, "after what you've gone through, we're more than happy to pay for the rent...i don't ever want you to go through that again and i surely don't wanna see like that again." ph34r.gif

OH, YAH! i forgot to add...join clubs!!! you meet a lot of super nice and cool people in there, so again...don't worry about not meeting people where you live in and in class. clubs are one the best places to meet people who have similar interests and goals as you.;D
aggiesbaby
Primero Grove is very nice. Kitchen..bathroom..bedroom...living room...dining area...it's a fully equipped apartment. Housing shouldn't give you any problems if you pay your friend the rent. Make sure find out all the details in case anything comes up unexpectedly in the future.

Trust me...Castilian isn't the craziest with drinking. You're going to find them in Cuarto, Segundo and Tercero. You'll just have to work your way around it if you're not a drinker.

I met my closest friends in history discussions (lectures as well if it's upper div classes) and chinese. Language classes make it easy to meet people since they're less than 30 students.

I live in the Greystone Apartments in East Davis. Really popular among UCD students. It's also one of the more up-scale apartments in Davis. Bit pricey though..
sandy k
is thompson (?) in segundo really as pretty as it looks in the pics?
aggiesbaby
Thompson, Miller, and Alder are the nicest and newest dormitories in the Segundo area but don't forget, you don't get to choose where you want to live!!
Jay Chou
i heard south tercero is nice too
aggiesbaby
Yep...it finished construction not long ago so Tercero South is the newest residence hall addition. The Tercero DC has also been newly renovated as well.

another questionnnn!
i have been looking at the residence hall pictures and the segundo part looks nice (or at least one part of it)..

do we get to choose which actual place we live in?

You kinda get to say where you want to live. You get to say you PREFER Cuarto or something, but you might not get it X_X

Um...only parts of segundo are nice. Regan, a little bunch of buildings in Segundo, is nasty. Bixby, a building in Segundo, is okay. Cuarto is luxury compared to them.

And they ask you to fill out a survey of your preferences.
Ie. How much would you like communal bathrooms?
- A lot
- Don't care
- No

What do you prefer? Number them.
1. Cuarto (THE BEST)
2. Tercero
3. Segundo

or something...I forgot the words

And that is what helps sort you out.

QUOTE(Jay Chou @ May 21 2006, 11:58 AM)

i dont know if it's true, but most asian ppl tend to choose tercero or segundo?

It will ask:
What do you prefer? Number them.
1. Cuarto (THE BEST)
2. Tercero
3. Segundo

You might not get the place you want though. A lot of people pick Segundo because it's ON campus and near the rec center (called the ARC).

OH yeah. Tercero is ALSO on campus but TERCERO has the COWS. It smells. Some people like it. some people don't.

Cuarto is OFF campus, but ohohohoho it's worth it.

And no, I don't think there's a statistic about what "asian" people tend to choose. There's all sorts of people here...

No matter WHERE you live (tercero, cuarto (castilian), segundo) or what you live in (quad room, suite, all girl's dorm, co-ed floors, co-ed building), it's like this:

3 person is ~ $9,000
2 person is ~ $11,000
1 person is ~ $13,000

and the price also depends on your meal plan

You can say you're going to eat EVERY MEAL at the DC, it's 180 (BUT DON'T! It's GROSS! X_X! Whatever DC you go to, you'll get tired of it)
or 120
or 90 meals per quarter.

I don't know how much the meal plans cost though X_X it won't be $1000 or anything though. A few hundred.

I think it's okay, but I think it's CHEAPER and just as good to do the program only summer advising.

Oh and davis is REALLY REALLY REALLY HOT AND HUMID during july. Wearing clothes makes you sweat. Even if it's just your underwear.

And for the summer advising, you're going to be staying in the crappy Regan rooms. At least they have AC though.

ZOMG wouldn't that be cool if we had a soompi members get together at the university!?

i have to get back to my two ten page papers (in english) and my 2 page essay in German now. T___T

i'm not sure

but ...triples in segundo would be hell.

those rooms are TINY

well compared to mine (in Emerson and Thoreau in Cuarto)

i heard only SOME will be triples

but the positive is that it IS cheaper; it's NOT by the cows, so it DOESNT smell; it's ON campus; it's NEXT to the ARC; its DINING COMMONS won the BEST college eating place thing (i dont like the food much though)

so don't worry too much about it : )

here's a link for pure info:

it looks like the new buildings (alder, thompson & Miller halls) are converted into triples (made 3-4 years ago)

they should have bigger rooms than malcolm, ryerson, Bixby & Gilmore Halls, and regan hall (those are olddddddd and dirty)

questioN!
okay i called cal grant and the financial aid office a billion times and didnt get my question answered so ill ask here..
if my status for cal grant b is "auto accepted" and i am "qualified" for cal grant a, is there any way i can change from B to A? I asked the financial aid office and the woman kept going on an on about random things so i hung up and the cal grant office said i had to get it approved/signed by the financial aid office (i live 6 hours away from davis.)

also, i emailed the financial aid office last friday and my status for cal grant on my efan was "estimated" but when i checked it just now, it was
"stipend" n-nh or something like that.. anyway, i thnk i remember my friend telling me i can only get one cal grant type and once the funds are given out i can't change it. is this true? and what does stipend do?

ah so long but thanks in advance!

^ they DO look pretty suicidal.

too bad i lived in tercero south.
damn nice new buildings.
our building was cracking up
cuz all the tours of dorms went on in our place
trying to suck in ppl with the hope of getting the new buildings lol
one thing about here is
you get used to the smell of poop.
my bf came and was gagging
and me and my friends didn`t smell a thing

also, i emailed the financial aid office last friday and my status for cal grant on my efan was "estimated" but when i checked it just now, it was
"stipend" n-nh or something like that.. anyway, i thnk i remember my friend telling me i can only get one cal grant type and once the funds are given out i can't change it. is this true? and what does stipend do?

ah so long but thanks in advance!

they don't look like someone's been murdered in them o_O; they look old, dirty, and old and dirty..O_O

and i dont have a calgrant. : (

i would say call again and pester them. hopefully you'll get a different woman who can answer your question

i was a freshman at davis =]
i thought summer advising was really fun and i kinda learned a lot.
Davis is known to have the second best dining commons after ucla.
and bike accidents happen daily =] ESPECIALLY on rainy days! dont forget to get fenders if you dont want the freshman stripe! youll learn what that is at summer advising lol... and davis is not as boring as people say it is... well, if you join clubs and stuff
goood luck at davis you guys! and maybe ill see you around =]

^ wld 57 is one quarter.... and to avoid taking it, take an english class at a community college! its a lot easier!

oh! and i heard that the freshman class of 2010 is a third bigger so theyre gonna make the lounges and study rooms bedrooms... so have fun with that! and the dc is pretty crowded this year, i cant imagine it next year... but its ok... you guys will still have fun!

if i want to purchase a course catalog online can i buy the "Current Class Schedule and Registration Guide " (the $1.25 one)? i mean...i want to look for fall classes but i'm not sure if that's for fall or not. i was going to get the $5 one but i don't need previous year stuff. plus, with shipping it came out to be almost $10. my friend was unable to take the writing placement test in may and i think is planning on taking it in september. hwo does she register for english classes if she hasn't taken the test yet? do they drop/keep her after the score comes out?
