It always depends on the college, you can tell by visiting the college or asking people from there... but for Penn State, I'm pretty sure you don't need a car whatsoever. I'm not sure with that college but I know that Penn State and a bunch of the others in Penn are situated really close to each other, and has a vast system of metro and transportation options without a car.

If you're dorming and your city's public transport is worth its name, then you shouldn't need a car at all. From what I've heard, Penn has a decent public transport system, but get a job at your school. They'll pay you more.

well 1st year i don`t think you should
but next year i want one to get around since i`m going to be living off campus
and i feel bad when my parents have to drive 4 hours to come pick me up so i want to drive home myslef.

car sounds like a good idea to me. but my college wont let freshmen park so i wont be getting a car until my sophmore year... bummer.

I have a bike and it's quite useful.
How about a bike?

It really depends on your campus sometimes. In my first year I went to the University of Texas at San Antonio, and the campus was relatively small and public transportation is close to nothing over there.. so yes, in that situation it's ideal to have a car the first year. However here at the Austin campus, most first years who live on campus don't bring cars because everything necessary (food, public transportation, etc.) is so readily available that it's not necessary. Not to mention a parking pass is well over $600.. Anyway.

I suggest try living without a car for a few months. You can decide for yourself whether you need it or not.

If your just stating at the school and not like going back home every weekend, then just leave the car. You'll just end up spending a lot of money to park your car. Also, most schools have decent public transportation to places and stuff. Another thing, if you had a car you have people always bothering you to take them to some place and such.

if you do, don't tell anyone because they'll bug you for rides. i currently have a car because i go home every weekend...it's nice though...you know for emergencies and for your own convenience smile.gif

wow sound like i dont really need a car

and one more question how do u guys decided which major u're into? sad.gif
wakeupsandy
Don't worry about the major too much.. Most people entering college don't stick with their choosen major. Try to take a variety of classes you're interested in, and hopefully you'll end up really enjoying one of them.

well you don't really need a car for college. If you get a part time job on campus then you can walk. And if you're living on campus then you don't have to worry. Most of my friends dont have cars and they get around town just fine with public transportation.
talula
i live like 15 min away so no need for a car.
LycheeTea
its times like these i wish i had a car..... it takes me awhile to get to uni.
The ONLY good thing about public transport is that i get my longgg nap.
But then again, petrol prices are outrageous these days crazy.gif ... so maybe its cheaper to stick with public transport.
yukirosaki
^^ that's the problem "long nap" lol and since i've never use public transports much so i dont know how to get around and it takes about 3 hours from my house to school and i have braces so i just thought it'd be easier for me and for my mom she wont have to come pick me up everything month or so and i was thinking to live off-campus or rent my own apartment somewhere close school cuz i dont want my roommates to be bother or bother me <<< i sound such a baby! sad.gif

try going without a car first..for like a week...keep your options open..and when you realized that you do need one...go ahead and get one..

personally..i drive to school..public transpo is okay..but i have loads of stuff..so i bring it around..my parents are cool with it..
pkjai1116
if u got friends to bus with, then go bus...u can meet more ppl that way anyways

i drive wen i'm late. lol sleep.gif;;
MiJi_10
i don't have a car and don't plan on getting one because i live close to campus and the public transportation isn't bad here. plus, not having one saves a lot of money. for your first year, i think you should try to get by without one. if you really need one then you can get it later.

as for your major, all of my friends are planning on changing theirs. most people don't stick with what they first wanted. take classes that you're interested in, see how things go, and decide from there. smile.gif

oh my god, thank you for ur advices i feel much better lol, i always thought it'd be such a pain to go to college w.o a car and chose wrong major hahahha
