Full Version: Before you play a sport

I play soccer, and I always had this question in mind. I play fine with either an empty stomach and a full stomach, but what about yall? I guess playing on a full stomach would give you cramps while you play, and with an empty stomach you could lose stamina quickly.
vanalla
half full, like eat maybe a snack or so, no sugar tho, but if you wanna be hyper during a game...it works well
supa'Wanki
You never want to play in an empty or Full stomach. Just enough to take you throughout the game. Just eat spagetti before a game. And drink not too much water, just about a bottle of water(not chugged) before the game.
mistapooh
What are you eating btw? Carbs fuel you during games so pasta, bread, or rice is all good.
vondunker
i used to play with empty stomach (for basketball) but it isnt good as i went panting after a short while . . however if i had a GOOD meal 3 hours before, i can run very well for full match.
InSong
eat a snack and never eat a full meal.
Malice_Kaiser
I haven't played actual sports aside from PE class in years. But back when I did, I would always eat. Playing with a full stomach never bothers me or makes me sick or anything. As for cramps, I get those if I don't eat. Food just gives me more energy.
GregoryHouseMD
Pasta one hour before playing anything
boka
i dont have much stamina unless i have a light meal with complex carbs about 45 minutes before i start doing anything - it's supposed to be two hours before exercise, but for some reason i find 45 minutes is good for me... i feel a bit weak and tired if i don't
bana
I always eat after I play sport
fluffpuff
it's better if you were to eat something light before playing any sort of sports. like a banana or an energy bar.
lovablekrnstar63
i play waterpolo so i don't know if it's diffnt from the land sports
but i eat about 3 hrs before practice/games
tnguyet
i used to play basketball and still do on occassions and i would have to say that its best not to play with a full stomach but rather you should eat a little snack or something before playing laugh.gif
Koreanbabo
Never play on an empty stomach because you won't have the energy to perform well. However that doesn't mean be playing anything with a full stomach because you don't want to be throwing up all over the ground. Like everyone stated here already, keep water to a minimum and have something to eat, just not so filliing, prefarably a piece of fruit or a small sandwich. Its best to stay with food that are high in carbohydrates, to give you quick, needed energy
Hunnytokki
yeah, eat an hour before, and dont drink too much of anything right before you play. you can hear it gurgling in your stomach...i felt nauseous if I ate anything sweet before I played soccer. Idk why.
cyberfruit
I usually snack by eating candy and drinking powerade for swimming because I'm always put in short swims that require quick bursts of energy (50 Free, 100 Free, 200 Relay, etc.).

I don't eat anything before I go to Karate because it's early in the morning and I don't want to eat ^^;.

I always need something in my stomach before I play.
If you end up throwing up, it's better throwing up something than stomach acid.
joonage
For basketball, I usually go to the bathoom before a game. sweatingbullets.gif

Then I drink about a half a bottle of water (drink not chug) before the game.

For track and field, being a thrower and not having to run, except for javelin, I usually eat a small sandwich or some trail mix.
xmichelle
I'm usually neutral. Not hungry/not full
Sometimes, if I eat too much before I play a sport, I get too sluggish and tired sad.gif

Also, I get thirsty easily, and I pretty much chug the drinks, which are ice cold, and then I get a stomachache. sweatingbullets.gif
keauxz
Gaterade really works well haha
bagalagaa
i eat a full meal 2-3 hours before the game and then maybe a little bit of bread or fruit before the game smile.gif
Pogichinoy
Neither full nor empty. Just a little bit of Gatorade, water and fruit.
MiiCKYO0CHUNx3
go carbs! this is when my schools team meals come in! team parents always get some pasta at school during lunch. which is around 11:54. we play at like 5 so i eat an apple after school at 3 biggrin.gif
neon.zebra.oatmeal
I eat a bagel. Pasta is inconvenient to eat right before playing a sport, in my case usually tennis. I never drink water before playing, or else as I'm running around on the courts, I feel the water sloshing around in my stomach. sweatingbullets.gif I drink a little bit of Gatorade between every court side flip.
mary-xo.
if im planning to play a sport after dinner, id made sure that the food was completed digested in the stomach, like wait for another 20 min ..then i go!
rms13515
not eating 3-2 hours period prior to playing anything. Or else i'll get cramps. Actually if I dont have an empty stomach i will get cramps.
soulremix.
I just eat a small snack and drink some water before I do judo or wrestling. I don't like to eat full meals before doing those sports because my stomach starts to hurt .___.
gooshness
just half full... it's not good to be full nor empty
Starberriee
I like eating a fruit before I play, I just know at the end of the game I am SOOO hungry...
xkrndreamer
it's simple.
half stomach.
gotta eat something so you don't feel drained and light headed.
gotta eat something light so you don't feel like you're going to throw up.

a simple sandwich will do.
NOgnaras
i ate a little( well, maybe more wink.gif ). sandwich and milk(not orange juice cuz it will make my stomach feel weird)~ not too full cuz i would be bloated and would feel sluggish. lol~ but i didn't eat anything before/after jogging though.
Kiribati
I buy a footlong sandwich at Subway before I go exercise/play sports, eat half before (like 30 minutes before, or even right before), and eat the other half after. If there's no time to get food, I just eat afterward. I don't feel any different if I eat or not. I just eat 'cause supposedly it's easier for the body to recover.
spikeyhair91
I eat a little snack,nothing big.
es623
neither. i usually eat a decent meal 2~3 hours before sport. and maybe a quick snack before playing if i need to.
JacksonC
I usually drink a protein shake and eat a bagel and some cottage cheese.
MikkiNe
I make sure I eat a tleast 1-2 hours before a game, if I know it's a big game and I'll get nervous I just munch on saltines on the way there
Liinax3
Empty most of the time ,but I eat fruits before I play sometime;
