Chinese music can be extremely good and shocking bad at the same time. so here's a list of singers, songs and albums I love, notice the absence of boy/girl bands, jolin, rainie, or the frustratingly horrible 'Supergirls' etc...i just wudn't call their music good. anywaiz, here's my list, some of the songs are old, some of the artists r not as famous, but they're worth checking out just coz the music is good, imo

Jasmine Leong (Liang Jing Ru) - anyone with a soft spot in their heart will love her. most of her songs are lovesongs and ballads, though she tried a bit of rock in her Yan Wei Die album.
Fav Albums: Silk Road of Love, Yan Wei Die (best), Love Parade Live Concert (the last song 'Zhang Sheng Xiang Qi Lai' is so sad coz Jasmine dedicated it to her dad)
Fav Songs: Silk Road of Love/Si Lu - leehom is a GENIUS, Lu (Road), Ke Xi Bu Shi Ni, Yan Wei Die, Mo Li Hua (remake of the folk song into a more modern ballad, the lyrics, and the melody are soo SAD), the all-time classic - Yong Qi...i luv most of her songs actually.

Leehom Wang - okay, i'm so biased, even if leehom did the most horrible album i'd still love him (who wudnt?). but thats not going to happen coz his albums just keep on getting better. the guy doesnt win a GMA for nothing. also, there's a bonus - he's hot!
Fav Albums: all since Wei Yi, but i LUV Unbelievable, and the latest one Heroes of Earth
Fav Songs: Ni Bu Zai *sniff*, Xin Zhong De Ri Yue, Kiss Goodbye, Zai Mei Bian, Gai Shi Ying Xiong feat Jin. Ci Ke Ni Xin Li Xiang Qi Shui, err...all

David Tao - my other luv apart from leehom. david's music is more mature than leehom's (he also happens to be older), but his voice, imo, is not as good compared to leehom, but that doenst matter, coz his music is fabulous.
Fav Albums: Ultrasound, the Great Leap
Fav Songs: Ghost (the intro scares m), Black Tangerine, Small Town Girl, Liu Sha, Just Friends - all

Mayday (Wu Yue Tian) - rock isn't really hot in China/Taiwan atm, but Mayday is an exception. the lead singer Ah Xin, is amazingly talented. his lyrics r just gorgeous (he wrote the Zai Mei Bian lyrics for leehom, and Silk Road for Jasmine)
Fav Albums: Zhi Zu
Fav Songs: Yong Bao, Sheng Min You Yi Zhong Ji Xian, Zhi Min He Chun Jiao, I Love You Wu Wang, Lian Ai ING

Shin (Xin Yue Tuan) - another rock group, but they're more ballad-ish than MayDay
Fav Album: their 1st...forgot the name
Fav Songs: Si Le Dou Yao Ai (i love the high notes, amazing!), One Night in Beijing (it's a redo of an old song, but it's better than the original, luv the Chinese opera bits, and the lyrics r just beautiful if u understand chinese), Hai Kuo Tian Kong

Stefanie Sun (Sun Yan Zi) - my other fav female singer, her voice is amazing, and the way she sings makes me cry, personally i luv her coz she's just a very cute girl-next-door
Fav Albums: The Moment (made me cry coz she was quitting for a year), Stefanie, her latest album is no good tho
Fav Songs: the Moment, Yu Jian, Wo De Ai, Wo Bu Ai, Wei Wan Cheng, Wo Ye Hen Xiang Ta, the whole the Moment album is worth listening too - all her best hits plus a few new songs

Tanya Tsai - best female singer at the GMA this year, she deserved it too, her voice is good, not exceptional, but her songs r brilliant
Fav Albums: the new one, T-Time
Fav Songs: Beautiful Love, True Love, Yuan Dian feat Stef Sun, Lu Kou

Penny Dai - most people will know her from Meteor Garden i think, but her other songs r just as good
Fav Album: Ai Feng Le
Fav Songs: Ai Feng Le (her singing in dis song is amazing), Wo Yao De Ai (reminds me of my meteor garden craze, which is kinda embarassing)

Faye Wong - she shud be given a crown, enuf said
Fav Album: Jiang Ai
Fav Song: Jiang Ai, Xuan Mu, Kong Cheng, Hong Dou.....

F.I.R - and most people wud kno them from the drama Dou Yu, the lead girl is a fabulous singer, so amazing, and i luv all their songs (now that i mentioned it, the Dou Yu OST is pretty good, but not for Dou Yu 2)
Fav Albums: well they've only got 2, and both r great
Fav Songs: Wo Men De Ai, Ba Ai Fang Kai (kinda like a sequel to Wo Men De Ai), Yin Xu Zhi Di, of course Lydia, pretty much all actually

Jin Hai Xing (Lolita Jin) - not a very well known mainland singer, but her songs r so beautiful, i dun understand why she isnt more famous than the horrible Supergirls. her voice and her style is a bit like Faye Wong, only a bit
Fav Album: Du Li Ri / Independence Day
Fav Songs: Du Li Ri, Yang Guang Xia De Xin Xin (i luv luv luv the melody, makes me wanna cry), Lolita (soo cute, they filmed the mv in Aus too), Take Me Away

Elva Hsiao - she confuses me, some of her songs r shocking, but some are amazing, so only listen to da good ones
Fav Albums: Fifth Avenue, and the last one...Beautiful Interlude or something like that
Fav Songs: Mei Li De Cha Qu, Di Xia Tie, Wen, Ta He Ta De Gu Shi, Ni Shi Wo Xin Zhong De Jin Tan

JJ Lin - not a fan, his voice annoys me at times, his songs r soo mushy, and his lyrics r too tryhard poetic for my taste, but he does have talent. i think his music will get better and better (if only he quits his stupid obsession with robots, pyramids, evolution, and all other futuristic things)

wow, dis list is getting long. i'll add more when i think of more. but here's all my fav chinese music in a nutshell

now please recommend ur favs
kamui_hime
Lee Hom is great! Everytime a new album of his comes out, you can tell he's improved alot!
JJ Lin is good too, my favorite album of his was Haven, his 2nd album. the others were okay but i don't listen to them that often.

of course you can't mention quality chinese music without mentioning Jay Chou!
Albums: 6 out so far: Jay, Fantasy, 8 Dimensions, Ye Hui Mei, Qi Li Xiang, and November Chopin; he'll have another one out sometime late august/early september i've heard! plus he's got some EPs, a greatest songs cd, and some live cds which are a must!

although most of his songs are great, i really love the YHM cd, as well as 8D and fantasy; as you can see, i prefer his old stuff, but his new cds have great songs like Jie Kou (excuse), Zhi Zhang Zhi Shang (Youth that ends war), Fa Rue Xue (Snow-like Hair), Yuan You Hui (Garden Festival), and Qi Li Xiang (Orange Jasmine).
His YHM cd is probably my favorite, so i have to recommend the entire album! but of course some of the real highlights include Qing Tian (Clear Day), In the Name of Father, Dong Feng Po (East Wind Breaks), Ni Ting De Dao (You can hear), and Ti Tian (Rice Fields).
I wont go into the rest, but if anyone would like more recommendations i'd be happy to give more!

another person i like is a new guy called Tank. He's only got 1 album out called Fighting, i'm not sure if we're allowed to do this, but i'll put up a MU link for his album because he's a fairly new singer: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=FFUYLAPX
His songs are pretty poppish, but his voice is really nice!

Khalil Fong - 2005 Newcomer... probably the most underrated singer from this generation.

his style is very R&B and soul. though he's jumpstarting his career in HK, he sings in Mandarin. his first album is called "Soul Boy" and his latest song is called "Su Lai Zhen" (sp?).

he is multi talented as he also composes and i think produces. he plays the piano and he wrote a lot of the songs on his first album. he also composed Fiona Sit's 'Tong But Lut'
sl33p1n6b34uty
amei chang is a good friend of leehom...her songs are really good i've liked her since i was a lil kid too

i really like steve chou he used to write a lot of song for other singers before letting out his own album...unbelievable singer

nicholas teo is a very good singer too
trashstar
i love F.I.R. too biggrin.gif
most good chinese songs are oldies
kinesis
in addition to what you said, i also recommend:

will liu (liu geng hong)
jay chou's best friend. jay helped promote his album, i think. and this guy is actually pretty good. he does more ballad stuff than jay does. "rainbow heaven" (cai hong tian tang), probably his most well-known song, is amazing! i think he's in some drama, or at least that's what my friend said. piano and some guitar.

guang liang
he is really not that bad. "yue ding" (promise) and "tong hua" (fairytale??) are really nice. but i don't like his music videos
DaRkViEt73
Vivian Lai has always been my favorite chinese singer but of course she's retired from singing now.
Fei.Long
Elva Hsiao and Jay Chou!! Especially Elva she is no doubt my fave Chinese artist! Can't wait for her new album!
pillowbox
JS i think they are good.
SE7EN_
Like someone mentioned above, Khalil Fong is underrated, but a good very good artist.
SYK
I LOVE F.I.R. The song that gets me all energized is Fly Away. It makes me happy. For stressed out times, I listen to Revolution, and the third one is Wu Xian. I like their songs.
yuans7love
the other day my mom put on a really really old Wong Faye CD and i was just blown away. I never realized how amazing she was even though i've been listening to her since i was small.

AND I LOVE WANG LEEHOM!!! wub.gif wub.gif

david tao is really good too and TENSION!! the most talented yet underrated group ever that it makes me cry!!!
Tonyc402
you should add EASON chan in there.. he is definately quality chinese music .. XD
dOotsiez
F.I.R's new album comes out on the 28th of July biggrin.gif more good music to listen too
Sensitive_soul
Jay Chou. I know some people say he can't sing, but you gotta admit he's a musical genius. His songs are great.

A*Mei Chang Hui Mei. Amazing vocals. Esp when she sings tribal songs. Beautiful!

Nan Quan Mama

Lin Yu Chong. Just won the Best Newcomer award in the GMAs
bonbons
i'm chinese and i rarely listen to any cpop...but JJ lin is so freeking cool! and elva <3 XD i was such a big fan a couple of years ago.
beckii
yeah tension! i dun kno if they have any new stuff but most of their old stuff was really nice=]
loveprint
Glad F.I.R's up there. biggrin.gif
`DEBI
David Tao definitely. His songs are really mature and his voice is as agood as Leehom, maybe even better. My favourite song is Jiu Shi Ai Ni,really awesome.

I was crazy about JJ Lin but not anymore.I find his songs kind of annoying.
geianna
quality chinese pop music is more like it from your recommendations. mainland china actually has a thriving rock industry--mainstream and underground. chinese indie music is also improving. smile.gif

to add to the pop industry. i recommend, 胡彦斌, 花儿, 林子良, 江美琪, 阿杜.任贤齐, etc.

as for rock or indie music. i suggest, 龙宽九段, 谢天笑, 深蓝乐团,渡鸦,拜金小姐, 31, 冷酷仙境, etc.
broken.wings
I think these singers are good:
F.I.R.
Jay Chou
Joey Yung
Stefanie Sun
Kelly Chen
Eason Chan
Janice Wei Lan
May Day
Avex
zhang amei and jasmine leong.
for mainland, i like sun nan, zhang liangying, han hong
murdoc_19_2000
haha i'm really sick of Jolin, Rannie or blah blah Chinese pop singers, especially female. They're all the same and there's nothing special between any of them.
Actually i was crazy about JJ Lin's songs too... I think his music is kinda nice but his voice somehow destroys his own songs.
I recommend Jay Chou and Nan Quan Mama... actually i dont listen to Cpop as much as Korean or Japanese music cuz the artists dont impress me intensively. Anyone knows Cherry Blossom, a girl band? I think they play rock... pretty good.
Geianna, do u have rock and indie songs for those artists u recommended above???? I'm kinda curious how Chinese indie is!
march-hareXmad
Jay Chou has great music, there's not a song of his that I would skip and chose another song. Also he composes his music, so that makes me like him more. And his songs are good to the ear and he doesn't stick to only one genre of music. I like how he puts everything together.

JJ Lin's music is good, and I like his voice. Although I'm not a big fan of him yet though, I still listen to him every now and then.

F.I.R.. OMG I love them! Lydia is my favorite song. Their songs are really good and Faye's voice is nice.

I love Wang Lee Hom because it's him. lol. He's so talented! I wasn't a fan of him before, but after seeing one of his music videos and learning mroe about him, I became a fan, haha. I first saw him in Moon Child, but didn't care much for his character although he was one of the main...cause I was paying mroe attention to Hyde...-___-

Although I like SHE, Rainie, and all those other girlie, cutsie singers/groups, they get boring after a while..
Avex
sandy lam!!! old school canto pop!
jamba bamba
i agree with ALLL of your list!! but i can't believe you forgot AMEI!! her voice is SO good. my 3 fav chinese singers are leehom, lin jun jie and amei smile.gif

i think liang jing ru is also a pretty good singer, and i listen to evonne hsu sometimes too
Alice
SuperGirls can't actually sing well. Liu Yu Chun, the winner of 2005 couldn't even pronounce Shakira's song properly. I just heard random stuff -__-
I also recommend 薛之谦, 陈坤, Nicolas Tse and Kelly Chen
Special Ed
I love FIR and Soler since they're like the ONLY rock-ish bands that have a mix of chinese taste along with an american style. They're both amazing bands!! Love'm!!
angel2nyt
tension and lee hom are really good..
i so love lee hom..
he's the reason why i like cpop
and f.i.r. is certainly quality
and oh amei(how can anyone forget her..her voice is so good)
precious4e
I love Faye Wong!

But I haven't been keeping up with much Chinese music lately sweatingbullets.gif
I love Jay Chou though (and I always will even though his latest album wasn't the greatest).

My old time loves (and by old I mean way back in the 90s LOL):

Jacky Cheung: One of the best voices imo
Andy Lau: He had some good oldies
Beyond laugh.gif : One great band

And Silver Ash <=== hehehehe Chinese Visual Rock! (not so much now though)
ae4azns
I haven't listened to cpop for weeks....>_< anyway below are the artists I <3 that are part of my cpop collection.
You can check out my radio page (in my sig) to preview their albums. =]
They're all from HK, SG, Malay for the most part. Only one female recommendation below >_< (her english is good)

[u]_Janice Wei Lan_____Khalil Fong_____Guang Liang______Alex Li________Ah-Du (A-Do)_

_Yu Zhong Lam_
(Lim Yee Chung)____Gary Cao Ge____Nicholas Teo_____Will Liu_____
vannushka
Joey Yung and Eason Chan. I know Joey is sometimes seen as a "pop idol" but her singing really is something. Well Eason, he's just great.

I think Janice really needs to improve, her live singing isn't very stable.
zweet
most people in my list have already been mentioned. here's 2 more.

Huang Yi Da. his songs are good, his voice is awesome and i like how his songs are distinct from each other. one of the most underrated artists.

Louis Cheung. another HK artist. he has one album out as of now, and his songs are smooth R&B. his first album rocked, and i think he deserves attention. nice vocals, and got a whole lot more talent than most mainstream artists in HK right now.

I agree, Yida is so underrated, i always look for him in award shows, but he never get one
pisses me off
his music is just awesome!
Tonyc402
I recommend Eason Chan and Justin Lo chuk teen. Eason Chan has great vocals and great songs , also won a lot of awards in the HK music awards for his U87 album which was a real hit. Justin Lo also is a good singer
chdairkld
F.I.R.--very beautiful, I love Thousand Years Love (sorry I might have gotten that title wrong), its so dramatic and sad, powerful

Nan Quan Mama: I really liked their sound overall, how their voices mesh together, the mixing of vocal and slight rap? I love it.

Jay Chou: I listen to him allll the time! I love his music, his voice, the little touches that always makes his songs "jay chou", he's pretty much amazing, talented, genius.
chigusa707
I love all the people in ur list. ^^

But might I add some more?

NAN QUAN MAMA- I love their songs cause its easy to the ears, meaningful, fun and catchy.

JAY CHOU- Need I say more? he may slur a lot but that isnt reason enough to no like him. His songs are almost like poetry.

SHI AI MIN- Her versions of Jay's songs are all so beautiful. She has a dreamy voice that's sure to calm you down.

CHERRY BOOM: They are a new all-girl rock band~ I love love them a lot. Its girl power!
weird&short
I like david tao, tension, will liu and gary.
Avex
the only real supergirl who can sing is zhang liangying. zhou bi chang is also good
pillowbox
阿杜, 胡彦斌 & 任贤齐 are good<3

^ LOLLLL, yeah, but he can actually sing, although his voice sounds kind of girlish...but that's just how pretty his voice is.

Wang Lee Hom is just....GOSH, you CAN'T NOT like him!!! Even my brother who hates almost every guy I like admits that he can't hate him. He produces his own songs, writes most of the lyrics for them, directs his own MVs, and sooo much more. Plus, he is a freakin MUSIC PRODIGY. He got into the philharmonic orchestra at the age of 13, graduated from WILLIAMS BERKLEE COLLEGE OF MUSIC (my dream school, #1 liberal arts school in US) WITH HONORS WHILE HE WAS RELEASING ALBUMS, and sooo much more. He knows more than 10 instruments, and is extremely talented with the piano and violin (perfect pitch). 1600 on SATs, National Merit Scholar, accepted into Yale and Princeton, he's just a...genius. He has SOO much passion for music; he's done EVERYTHING that I've ever wanted to accomplish, and he started out with no ability to sing and only a desire to compose, but look at him now!! His personality is soooo...idk how to describe it...good lol. He is super modest, has no temper, is totally cool, and totally nice. He's not only my academic role model, but also my role model as a person. He chose music over his girlfriend. His whole life is based upon music. He understands music sooo much, and he deserves every award that he's ever received. Many of his lyrics are based upon that girlfriend he chose music over. Even his 5 minute diary entries give me heart attacks; they're extremely beautiful. This guy definitely deserves a listen. I'll stop spamming now biggrin.gif .

Jay Chow - Yeah, I know he can't sing, but his lyrics are to die for. Even though many are love song lyrics, the metaphors and everything make me think SO much about life, morals, love, etc...different from your everyday singer singing about love. He composes most of his own songs, directs his MVs, and excels at the piano and cello. This guy is also definitely a music prodigy. I recommend all of his albums.

FIR - I seriously love ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLL of their songs, seriously, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. My favorite Taiwanese band. They write their own lyrics as well, and their songs are just beautiful.

Fan Yi Chen (Van Fan) - I actually don't know much about him. He just released his 4th album, and I gave it a listen, and this guy has a great voice. His songs in his fourth album are ALL great.

Fan Wei Qi - She has an AMAAAAAAAZINGGGGG voice. She can sing too. She has a very simple, clean, pure voice, perhaps my favorite Taiwanese female voice.

I recommend Tanya Chua and David Tao as well. Too lazy to type more stuff, but they're must listens...David Tao's voice is a mix between Jay Chow's and Wang Lee Hom's. Tanya has great balladish songs, and a very nice voice.

*edit*

I forgot to add Sam Li (Li Sheng Jie). I LOVE his songs. He can sing too. I especially recommend "Shou Fang Kai".
geianna
CHERRY BOOM: They are a new all-girl rock band~ I love love them a lot. Its girl power!
[/quote]

i seriously don't understand why they are classified as "rock". uhhh. pop-rock would even be stretching it. more like power-pop. although there are quite a few ballads on that album. i was expecting more. haha. wink.gif
pgirl
Alin Huang is quite good tho' she's new, she really has a great voice, it's strong cuz she sang at pubs, think she's been compared to Amei even.

Anson Hu is another i like, his new album was great and his concert was spectacular, nice mellow voice.

the rest, alot have mentioned like Leehom etc XD
`faded
Jay chou =P..who could forget the man =D..LOL and yes another soompier mentioned a newcomer named Khalil Fong, he is a really good singer, his songs are r&b yet it has a jazzy pop feel..so I really love his music. Justin lo, Tension, and some others..lol..
yennie
woohoO~~~
TENSION IS THE BEST..
in my opinion
of all that i've listen
they're acapella just wows me.. lol
tho..i don't know much...i don't reallie listen to cpop even tho im chinese >.<
sovu22
Besides all the above mentioned, break throughs such lee hom, jay chou, etc...

I think Anson Hu has an awesome voice and his songs are good, but I think he'll get better.

A female singer that I especially love is Landy Wen, haven't listened to much of her stuff, but it doesn't take much to absolutely love her voice.

I also like Karen Mok- she's got a good voice too though she's probably more known for her acting. smile.gif
driftwood023
I like Penny Dai's song from Meteor Garden. XDD I also like Stefanie Sun..I think she's really talented. ^^ Also Elva Hsiao..
AL_NT_ATT
aw man i love F.I.R. soo much! Wo Men De Ai is just one beautiful song. i'm familiar with all the singers the topic starter mentioned, but i don't listen to all of them, i really like JJ though! i'm also really starting to like Van Fan, Eugene Yip, and TANK. others i've already liked are Andy Lau, Nicholas Tse, Kenny Kwan, Huang Yida, Kary Ng, Jay Chou, Janice Wei isn't so bad, and just many many others! i think maybe some people don't recognize the more talented ones. i'm getting to know more and more unknown singers recently and i've found i missed out on a lot. i really really like Jasmine Leong's (Fish Leong ?) "Central" for the Taiwanese series "Love Contract". really nice! i really like any Chinese singers from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore =) hopefully some people will open up their eyes and go for singers they didn't bother with in the past and see what they've missed out on, if they did.
melxXz
jay chou CAN'T sing, ARE EU KIDDIN ME?

he might not has the best voice in the world, but for someone who can hit such high notes, sing with different style/ voice, singing LIVE unplugged, how is THAT can't sing.

.-.
TiFFaNiZeD
who the heck is supergirls??? never heard of it...
