for mandarin music, i like stef sun (she has a very unique voice compared to her female peers), and for the guys, I've always liked jay chou and david tao. No matter how good music of other languages are, i still love their songs. recently, i found out about gary chaw (aka cao ge), i think this guy has a really good voice. I prefer it more when he roughs up a bit rather than singing the perfect way. He sings very well live(on par with Kim taewoo of g.o.d.), a true threat to david tao and leehom i believe, and one of the best chinese singers i've heard. but jay's songs still has his own uniqueness that no one comes close to yet.

Jay Chou -- Okay, so he mumbles. But he's totally capable of creating beautiful music. Enough said.
JJ Lin -- His songs are catchy and his voice is pretty good. And I like it when he sings in English.
David Tao -- I can't begin to tell you how much I adore his music. It's just way toooo good.
Leehom -- Hello, this dude can play like 10 instruments! How can you not like someone like Leehom? He's spreading Asian pride.
Huang YiDa -- Underrated. He needs more attention.
Tank -- Underrated. He should release more albums.
Others: Nicholas Teo, Daniel Zhang, Tension, MayDay.
Christine Fan aka FanFan -- I guess people know her for her dramas and shows, but her songs are pretty good too! And her voice is really deep.
Tanya Chua -- Yay, she writes her own music, and her voice is clear and strong.
S.H.E -- I don't like how they do cover songs, but I think their singing is decent.
AiDi -- I don't know what she's been doing, but she should release new songs. Her voice is mad deep and clear.
Others: Kaira Gong, Liang JingRu, AhSang, Evonne, Elva.

i so needed this thread!
in my opinion, these guys are really good (i think most people have said it already.. but anyhow, i shall repeat them to show how good they really are).
males:
wang lee hom,
jay (VERY VERY FEW of his songs are actually good now, but i'll give credit to his older albums),
gary cao ge (underrated though), jj lin (he's talented and he's singaporean!!),
guang liang,
david tao,
jeff chang (i love his near feminine voice

),
li shengjie and
xiao gang (zhou chuan xiong)
females:
liang jing ru (she can sing but methinks her songs are becoming a tad bit boring, her new album, nuan nuan was the only good song!),
tanya chua (certain songs),
fan wei qibands:
wu yue tian (definitely the BEST!),
fir (their latest album is sooo good!),
nan quan mama and
dreamz fm [meng fei chuan] (an old band from singapore. their songs were so good!)
i really like male singers

Oh goshhhhhhh. I HATE all of the new pop singer groups and the ones who try to act all ghetto and rap like crap. They have no vocal talents AT ALL whatsoever. Except for a very selected few like Janice.

Jay Chou
Wang Lee Hom
F.I.R. (totally underrated)
Soler (totally ignored)
Edison Chen (yes his singing isn't great but lyrics are, EEG style is dead folks)
Zhang Li Yin (Jang Ri In's chinese versions)

i love this thread.
and i like the title of the thread: QUALITY chinese music.
chinese music has been flooded with all sorts of bubblegum music.
people that i really think produces QUALITY chinese music.
-shawn song: but its a shame, we will not get to hear another album from him.
-f.i.r: they wow me with every new album they have. a mixture of chinese and western music
-steve chou (better known as zhou chuan xiong): king of ballads.
-tanya chua: a very underrated musician. she recorded an english album but it wasn't successful and now, she's ventured into chinese music successfully.
-david tao: i love his music but not the latest album. :x

i spotted some mentions of jacky cheung. thank god! i grew up with his music and i still love him to bits. as well as william so- that song, the more we kiss, the sadder we are. and the song he did for the 'Gorgeous' soundtrack with a singaporean singer, kit chan. (lol i almost spelled her name together and called her kitchan)
and of course jay chou. i was listening to his first album and i was struck by how fresh his music still sounds to me. i always love his background effects.
and i like how a lot of taiwanese artistes are incorporating trad music- leehom in heroes of the earth album, jay, tank sang ala chinese opera in the rock song 'three kingdom romance' and i refuse to feel ashamed of loving jj lin to bits!! he and kim junsu are currently my 2 fave asian singers. and the funny thing is that the very reason i love him seems to be the reason why most people dun like him- his voice is so very distinctive to me. i like that!
and of course i totally agree with the first poster- fish leong's silk road. i had my sis translate the whole song for me. oh the song kills me. i didn't know that xin from mayday composed it. wowie! love him by association.

JJ Lin is the only Chinese pop singer I listen to now. Otherwise, it's all American for me.
I cannot stand Jay Chou or Wang Leehom, etc

If I must, Fan Wei Chi and Jasmine/Fish Leong sing well but their music is not appealing to me.
tis a wonderful life
Oct 18 2006, 07:22 PM
leehom and jj is a fave. eh, i don't understand chinese so i don't have to worry about mushy lyrics or whatever. but i think jj's voice is totally hot! so is leehoms. =P f.i.r. is pretty good too. and david tao of course, the other's i haven't really heard their music but most def. will check em out.

wang lee hom was the one who composed it, actually. ah xin wrote the lyrics to the song

which happens to be the most beautiful lyrics (silk road). bravo to Ah-xin, he should be a poet. lmao
anyways, just my opinion on a couple of new albums (by Liang Jingru, FIR and David Tao)
NONE OF THEM ARE AS GOOD AS THEIR LAST ONES.
Liang is going for the sweet thing, which is actually kind of annoying and too 'commercialised', personally, i prefer the 'Silk Road' which has a lot more depth
David Tao's album is good, it's nice to see him become less critical of the world for a change, but none of the songs wow me (except for Wang Bu Liao, which i've developed a love-hate relationship with)
F.I.R's last album made me cry, literally, from the first song to the last. loved that album. their new album is of an okay standard, a few good songs here and there, too mushy, but not touching...

omg, dOotsiez!! haha, your comment about jj lin made me laugh^^. it's true that the whole futuristic/mummy thing is a bit odd, but you gotta admit, it's unique, haha! he has really good potential. i just wish there were more lyrics to his songs, as many of them merely repeat the lyrics.

I pretty like A-sun's music. I'm not sure if someone know her.
It's more slow music but with beautiful lyrics. Highly recommend the song "leaf" from her first album "love hurts", it's so beautiful
Also I like David Tao's music, Guang liang isn't that bad too
And from all that "Super Girls", Zhang liang ying is the one with the best voice and songs.

Whoo mandopop! My favourite is Energy, but I think most of you don't think that they can sing? :X Anyway, here's my list:
Singapore: Kit Chan, Joi Chua, Chew Sinhuey
Malaysia: Nicholas Teo, Fish Leong
Taiwan: Ocean Ou, Angela Zhang, Fan Weiqi, Elva Hsiao, David Tao, Tension, Ren Xianqi, Huang Pin Yuan, Zhang Xin Zhe, Emil Chau
Hong Kong: Andy Lau, Jacky Cheung, Eason Chan, Sandy Lam, Faye Wong, William So
China: Hins Cheung, Han Hong
(note that I am referring to their voice only. Honestly I am not a fan of some of the following singers :X)
I am so outdated with the mandopop industry, so don't mind me if I left out some names. :X But yeah, those people are whom I think have good voices. And most of them are not my favourites of favourites? I think I'm weird .__.

I love a lot of those singers you mentioned! Stephanie Sun, FIR (talented), Jasmine Leong (LOVE HER), David Tao, JJ Lin, and Leehom are all very talented artist that IMO should get more credit than they are given. I could listen to their songs all day, especially JAY CHOU (you can't say Chinese music & NOT mention him). I'm very happy that Jay Chou is getting what he deserves but I hope they don't forget about all the others. I can see Jasmine Leong having a great future, I love her song "Silk Road" (she sang it perfectly & knowing that Leehom composed it, is so amazing).
Stephanie Sun is great as well, I first heard her on the radio and I immediately couldn't stop thinking about her song "Wo De Ai" (can't love or something like that?)...Searched all day for it x)...

right now, i LOVE will liu, he's a taiwanese (i think?) singer who's friend with jay chou....jay chou starred in one of his clips, and wrote 6 out of 11 songs on his album. His album "rainbow heaven" was released last year but i only recently discovered it, its sooo good! Everyone says he's exactly like jay chou but i think he has that rock element to him that makes him more like JJ. without the annoying whiney voice that JJ has (Sorry JJ fans!)
Songs I recommend:
rainbow heaven 彩虹天堂
xin dong xin tong 心動心痛 (with evonne hsu)
Shi Luo De Lu Cang Quan 失落的入場券
heart of war 心靈交戰

i'd have to agree on sun yan zi. wo de ai was great for showcasing her vocal talents and i like the composition of her songs too. my favorite song by her is abscondence.
david tao's voice is so similar to babyface's, and i mean that in a good way.
i'd also have to add valen hsu, an older artist. she's mostly ballads, but her voice is what sets her apart from the other ballad artists. her voice isn't strong, but it's got this crystal clear quality to it (and it's not due to studio production tweaks). she has a way of coming across as vunerable that it's hard not to sympathize with whatever she's singing about.

I don't like Lee Hom that much, but he does his music right.
^ Ocean Ou's from Singapore actually.=x And sinhuey's from malaysia but came to singapore to join the singing contest thing.
Ocean Ou kinda disappeared after he showed his face. =\
I am a David Tao fan although I don't listen to much chinese music cause the quality is soiled with bands like S.H.E and youknowwhat around. Ew.
I love Amei's voice! She's awesome! I like JJ too!

Great songs from F.I.R - Wo men de ai, Ba ai fang aki, A Thousand Years of Love, Lydia, Ci Niao, Fly Away
And Jay Chou's songs all pwn.

JAy Chou definetly. haha not being biased here but some people say that he cant sing, but what i say is he sings in his own style. don't noe anyone else that sings like him whichmakes him so unique. he composses all his songs, writes all the music and even sings them theres so much feelings in his voice . his music is not just all love songs but its his experience, things that he has gone through, so i would recommend all his albums because i love them all lol but 2 that is my top favorite is novembers chopin which is based on his favorite musician Chopin, and his new album Still Fantasy
