im not sick of their music but i like to try something different too.
i agree with Wang Lee HOm and FIR on ur list. they are totally awesome and talented!
Stephanie Sun is quite good too, she has powerful vocals.
i think Guang Liang and Anson Hu should be added to the list too =)

Word. Seriously, though they're a legend, I think they're sort of beginning to slowly fade away.
Have they come out with anything new lately?
They are not fading away, just away to compose more music.
I believe they have a CD coming out end of this month or in Jan (Not sure)

^ if you are talking about mayday. their album is gonna be out soon.
hm. im kinda disappointed with the current mandopop music industry. those really talented ones are usually underrated. i hate the way they are now going for those that LOOK talented, but are not even close to being so or they go for those CUTESY music. for example, they think singers that can compose or hold a guitar are good. it's so annoying.
but i kinda disagree that s.h.e is under the non-quality chinese music category.
yeah, they can't compose for nuts or w/e. but their vocals are strongest among any band vocal groups. they have such good harmony. i think it's wrong to categorise them like that.
h/e i think rainie yang can't really sing. she may sound good for a while on her cd. but i start to get sick of her voice after awhile. and her live is ok only.
IMO, jolin is good. check out her live performances. her stage presence is WOAH.

Dec 26 2006, 06:34 PM
agree that s.h.e's harmony is good, but can u imagine them in 5 years time? to me, their music and their maturity hasnt changed since when they first started out. neither have they made an effort to become better musically than they currently are. so despite their voice, i lack respect for them.
imo jolin's live is terrible - i watched one of her concerts on tv the other day, and found the vocals weak, costumes shocking, and the dancing so-so. not intending to offend jolin fans.

maybe i'm too "americanized" but i really dislike the chinese music industry. i haven't found one single artist i like. not one. their pop songs are hella annoying. music is an art and when you create something like music, there's suppose to be some feeling to it. i can not relate to it on an emotional level. i can understand an occasional catchy song. but it strongly lacks creativity. i'm so sick and tired of hearing all these cute poppy chinese songs. i think i've lost hope for learning to at least like their music. this is the only thing my parents agree with me on. and we never agree on anything. their most popular singers aren't even singers. i can't believe they got a job with their kind of voice. i'm sure there is talent somewhere but i just haven't found anything i liked yet.

yeah. i used to like gigi leung. then again, her style is kind of getting too stale for me. not that a artiste can't keep to his/her style. but i think, even so, they have to move along with times. listening to her songs now and in the past, i hear no improvement.

I agree that F.I.R. is great to listen to.
They're music is pretty cool.
Leehom, David Tao, and Jay Chou are really fantastic composers, and
their music they write themselves are all pretty good.
I would say although Jay doesn't sing THAT well, his songs are really SUPER. (x
Who doesn't like his music?
And plus his amazing ability to play the piano is a PLUS. xDD
And there's this new-ish singer, his name is Evan Yo, and he was produced by this
experienced old guy who's said to be as good or even surpass Jay Chou in four years.
He majors in violin (awesome at it) and minors in piano.
Pretty cute, too (x
So there it is. And Ah Mei Zhang is a really great singer too. :D

thanks to whoever recommended
khalil fong. even though i adore jj, leehom, and david...i have to admit that khalil's voice is 10x better than theirs and 20x better than jay's. OK...maybe not 10x...but his voice, in my opinion, is the best i've heard so far. very smooth...WOW...his adlibs...WOW...his arrangements...WOW (i think you can tell what i'm getting at, right? haha) he also writes his own songs, which i love. his style is more R&B than the people who are touted as R&B.
give him a go.

he's not as popular as a lot of other singers yet...probably because he doesn't look like a model, but his voice, his voice.

please support khalil by buying his cds, not downloading.

i listen to track number 7 on constant replay. haha.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'm Chinese but right now I'm completely staying away from Chinese music because of artists like Twinz, Sammie, Jolin Tsai because they're either too cute (Twinz) or their voices aren't appealing at all. For asian music, I usually listen to Japanese and Korean nowadays. The only Chinese singer that has captured my attention is Kelly Chen and maybe she's not regarded as quality Chinese music by most people but I still like her. I like Faye Wong, too but I've only heard her sing in English so far which is not bad. Usually Asian singers have this accent when they sing English (and I know they can't help it) but it's not pleasant to listen to. I also like some random singers whose songs are the opening theme songs to Hong Kong dramas but I have no idea who the artists are.

Anyone ever hear of the group
Long Kuan Jiu Duan? I don't think they made it that big, but I love their songs! It's a male-female duo and they've got this electro-pop type of music.
Here's a pic of them:

david tao, jj lin, FIR, and jay chou are definately up there on my list for chinese music

gary and elva are good too! i'm not sure if anyone's mentioned this band yet, but NAN QUAN MAMA is also pretty good... a little rockish-pop.
i haven't heard of any decent chinese music outside of these artists though, in my opinion :/
material_girl
Mar 21 2007, 03:23 AM
hmm i agree. chinese music is kinda limited to the ones mentioned. there arent any really good singer/songwriters in the chinese music industry apart from wang/tao
not a fan of jay chou. he's not very diverse as an artist, all his songs sound the same

and nan quan mama's music doesnt appeal to me either, they're kinda like the band version of jay chou. nothing terribly original, just a whole lot of songs about break up.
im particularly disappointed with female singers, there are some good voices, like elva, and fish/jasmine, but no one with talent (hehehe, dont try and convince me that jolin has "talent", she's fairly mediocre in everything she does, but thats just my opinion

)
faye wong is great tho.
and as for bands, as mentioned, mayday and fir seems to be the good ones. i dont follow the indie scene (dun think there's a huge indie scene in tw/cn anyways) so i dont kno who's good there. s.h.e has okay voices, but they really need to grow up and start developing their music a little bit. right now all i can say about them is tht they dont go off tune.
