they may not be the best singers in the world, but tney as hell CAN sing
I mean, if you consider them untalented, wonder what you think of fahrenheit, F4, twins and edison crazy.gif

For all we know, his preferences are skewed and he loves them all haha
benjaminlibl
No. I admit they are horrible. Probably only girls like them. They're just selling their faces. I don't have anything against Sun Yan Zi. I guess she can sing but I don't really like her voice. And she has to get a new songwriter.
Rainie_Days
I love JJ Lin, but I used to be more obsessed with him, this year, not really...though yeah, his singing just kills me sometimes, it's so nice.

I'm quite surprised that Jay Chou isn't on your list, Haha but yeah, he's another great singing...and SO talented.

Eason Chan is the best for Cantonese music...just all his songs, all his songs are just good, so meaningful.

Her voice is definitely an acquired taste. and I agree her newer songs aren't as memorable as her old songs. This is true for Amei too I think
*frutti
i loveeeee wang lee hom, he's #1 hahaha. he's basically got the whole package.
others would be jay chou, a-mei, angela zhang, sun yan zi, david tao, jj lin, tanya chua, alan kuo, F.I.R., elva hsiao, zhang dong liang, sam li, and tong en (she's not very famous, but i loooveee her voice and songs). and don't kill me for saying this, but i think s.h.e. actually had some pretty catchy songs in their most recent album.
i might have posted in here already. hehe.

No offense to you, but you haven't done the LEAST bit of research in terms of Chinese music. There are SO many singer-songwriters in Taiwan right now (Leehom, David Tao, Jay Chou, Stanley Huang, Tanya Tsai, Mayday, F.I.R., Zhang Zhen Yue) as well as singers with very good vocals (Amei Zhang Hui Mei, Stefanie Sun Yan Zi, Angela Zhang Shao Han). There are also more indie bands like Tizzy Bac and Sodagreen who have great music.

Yes there really are some truly annoying and untalented groups (F4, Fahrenheit, Hei Se Hui Mei Mei, Lollipop), but there ARE still talented people.

and actually I'm kind of opposite from you. Like, I don't listen to Kpop BECAUSE they're all young people trained the same way from a young age and they all come out with these formulaic songs and perform formulaic choreography and have the same formulaic style/appearance.

agree. i dont think we should have a blanket statement about any music industry. music is truly transnational. chinese, korean, japanese, english, french, spanish - music in any language is music, and is capable of being excellent. thats what this forum is for isnt it.

LEEHOM is my music king------->
FIR is rad
azn_grl_unknown
Wang LeeHom's songs are awesome. love every single one of his albums.
any wilber pan lovers here?
benjaminlibl
Wilber Pan used to be awesome but then he got more commercialized. I mean, I only remember one good song on his new album. I think most of the Taiwanese singers are becoming this way. I'm loving the old songs more and more, and the new ones don't really appeal to me.
jvchou1316
for chinese music, Jay Chou will do for me.
pgirl
i like Leo Ku, his new album is nice, finally a good canto album XD i miss the old days when you could get great HK music... now all i listen to is Mand. <.<

hmm, i think i'll toss in a another recommendation for Mand. Rynn Lin is good and of course Richie Yen. For girls, Jinsha, JJ's ximei is great.
cosmage.
元卫觉醒 anyone?
I think they are quite awesome.
(:

I think they're okay. Their songs and voices are quite generic, but Wesley composes nice songs (like Tian Kong). I also like their song Xia Tian De Feng

Does anyone here listen to more indie-ish Taiwanese music or music like 張震嶽's? I need recommendations
I currently listen to Tizzy Bac, Sodagreen(they're not so indie anymore are they), Deserts Chang (張懸), and Europa Huang (黃建為)

what about jay chou???!?!?!?!

Deep White? Not very sure if they're indie or not but they're pretty good. xD

there are a lot of talented singers in mainland china, but they're not popular with the younger generation of people.. who prefer listening to teenybopper boybands who can't sing to save their life. oh, and there's also the fact that taiwanese pop singers (like Jolin, fahrenheit etc. ) are more popular in mainland than mainland artists are..
some talented singers are.. Han Hong (her voice is amazing imo), Na Ying, Faye Wong, Jane Zhang (my favorite 'current' singer from china) and more that I can't remember -__- lol I only know of them because of my mom lol

one thing that irks me about the chinese music industry.. is all those actors/actresses who decide to make albums thinking they can sing (or they wanna make money) when they really can't! like look at zhou xun, she's like one of my fav actresses, but she seriously can't sing..

o.o I concur.
No offence to any Fahrenheit fans, but they can't sing live to save their life. =/ I saw a live performance of them once, and most of them were out of tune on their parts.

o.o ps. Recommendations-
Jay Chou. ;o He actually sings pretty well. <3 His November Chopins CD is awesome.
Rikayla
Besides Wang Lee Hom, I also looooove SAYA but nobody knows her. *lol* Michelle & Vickie is also pretty awesome. They sing really well, and they're talented with instruments too. Hmmmmm. I also like Ariel Lin's few songs, though I'm glad that she's sticking with acting and not moving into singing. smile.gif

Chinese music can be extremely good and shocking bad at the same time. so here's a list of singers, songs and albums I love, notice the absence of boy/girl bands, jolin, rainie, or the frustratingly horrible 'Supergirls' etc...i just wudn't call their music good. anywaiz, here's my list, some of the songs are old, some of the artists r not as famous, but they're worth checking out just coz the music is good, imo

Penny Dai - most people will know her from Meteor Garden i think, but her other songs r just as good
Fav Album: Ai Feng Le
Fav Songs: Ai Feng Le (her singing in dis song is amazing), Wo Yao De Ai (reminds me of my meteor garden craze, which is kinda embarassing)

^i agree w/ u for the most part. some of these bands/singers cannot sing, yet their extremely FAMOUS. i hate how the world today seems to mostly look at the face and barely care for the talent. music is not for appearances but rather for sound. so y does everyone judge for appearance? if they want appearance, go to the modeling industry not music. then there are some singers that get waaay too commercialized and just lose their touch. i feel really sad when that happens, the artist may sell more but they're not really showing what they've got. i feel sad for all those great TALENTED singers out there that are barely recognized. sad.gif

OMG! u like penny dai, too?
i absolutely love her voice. it's so soothing and i think she sings very well. yeah, her most famous song would be the ending song for meteor garden (the 1st one): ni yao de ai, which is how i found out about her laugh.gif. i find that her songs are very unique. they're very relaxing and calm. it mite take some getting use to for some of her songs but they're great! she's probably one of the only female cpop singers i ACTUALLY care to listen to. i wish i could listen to her songs every night 'cuz they could make u fall asleep (not in a bad way, tho rolleyes.gif).

I really like his voice. I'm not a fan of his music (except for Wo Ai Tai Mei), but I think he's cool. I like his other collaboration with Zhang Zhen Yue

I still listen to chinese music, but I don't know many groups/solos that match my personal preferences. I love korean music because it sounds NICE =]

I particularly fell for chinese music because of Wang LeeHom. All of his albums Unbelievable and later are awesome. Like everyone else I'd listen to almost anything he sings.

I also listen to some of Jay Chou's songs (Some songs are really good while others are not so pleasant. My fav = Return to the Past)

JJ Lin's new album "West Side"....is awesome, I listen to the entire tracklist.

I love MAYDAY's "Born to Love". Their latest album has two very good tracks, but the rest aren't as great.

Khalil Fong's music is really good, you should try it.

I haven't heard much from TANK, but I like his 2nd album. "keep Fighting".

Shi Kang Jun isn't very well known but his music has a special rock feel to it. Most people who have listened to him wil tell you the same thing.

Wing Luo's album is really nice to listen to!

K-One's album 'Love Story of Romeo and Juliet' isn't bad =]

A couple years ago I listened to Jolin Tsai, but her music eventually gets old. I haven't really listened to her new album. It isn't a big priority,

Some of Wilber Pan's music used to be pretty enjoyable like a year ago, but I don't like it much anymore. His latest album "Play it Cool" doesn't show much improvement.

Artists whom I have not bothered to try yet but heard were decent: Will Liu, David Tao, Nan Quan Mama, Eastyle, StyLe (a band that plays cover Korean songs), Guang Liang, Quincy Tan, Typhoon.
I have listened to a few samples from these artists, but I was not ultimately impressed.
13!hyukjae
Jay Chou & Nan Quan Mama & David Tao. My favourite chinese artists.

QUOTE(dOotsiez @ Jul 4 2006, 08:34 AM) *
David Tao - my other luv apart from leehom. david's music is more mature than leehom's (he also happens to be older), but his voice, imo, is not as good compared to leehom,

I disagree. Tao Ze's voice is better than Lee Hom.

others i like:
jay chou, david tao, zhang zhi cheng (z cheng), liang jing ru, guang liang, van fan yi chen, li sheng jie (sam lee), tank, cao ge (gary).

totally agree. it's not to do with the quality of mainland music, it's just that they have shitty publicity ppl, who cannot make them commercially desirable. im totally loving faye wong, and Na Ying. And I've change my mind about the supergirls, Jane Zhang definitely has potential. beautiful voice. she cud work on developing a musical style tho. right now, she's just doing a whole bunch of ballads. sure they sell, but they dont do more than that.

best album of last year: Mayday - Born To Love. It's one of the few albums that I've loved completely. every single song is fabulous. and their new concert cd is also very good. they sound even better live.
angeland
Jay Chou is so cool

his music is cool - needless to say, right?

his personality is cool - he's persistent to what he believes and never gets too commercial, yes, he's getting more and more commercial, but he holds his views. He once was the Asian ambassador for DHC, but he quited becuz he didnt feel comfortable with the on and on promotions. he knows that some people criticize that he's not making improvement, but he just sticks to his own style.

his family is cool - he's from a single parent family, he just loves his mum and grandma so much that he uses his mum's name to be album title and dedicate a song 聽媽媽的話(Listen to you mum) to encourage teenagers to love their families. His mum love him very much too, she accompanies him to different functions and gives support to his move making journey.

his friends are cool - jay treats his friends so good that he opens shops and restaurants just for making his friends dreams come true. there is a writer / lyricist call Ah Lang (黃俊郎) he wasn't earning a living, so Jay gives him good songs to write and here it comes the famous 以父之名 and 夜的第七章~ The band NanQuanMaMa (南拳媽媽) is also "raised" by Jay, he just wants the music industry to accommodate more different styles of music.

JJ Lin, 小肥, 林宥嘉 (James Yoga Lin), Nicky Lee 李玖哲 and Sodagreen have pretty good qualities of chinese music...

if i would have to recommend some songs of them, i would say
JJ Lin - 自由不變 Freedom, 西界 West Side (from his West Side album)
小肥 - 寵物 Pet
林宥嘉 - 背影, 那首歌
Nicky Lee - 圍牆, 想太多
Sodagreen - 小情歌

zhang liang ying. I absolutely adore her voice. one of the best singers out there, not only for chinese music but internationally. imo anyways.

i agree with you 100%. i've never heard someone who can sing so clearly in chinese as well as other languages, she is so amazing.

i'm so glad i found this forum because i was born in china but i moved to the states when i was 5, and i haven't been caught up in chinese music all these years. i keep hearing about all the koreans but never come across any *good* chinese singers these days, and i'm thankful for everyone's suggestions on this board! bless you all!

I don't listen to much cpop but i really like JJ Lin and Guang Liang. My favorite JJ Lin song is 只對你說...and I really like Guang Liang's Fairy Tale (Tong Hua...?)

Super Girls is the Chinese version American Idol/ X Factor, but only for girls. There were 3 competitions so far, 2004, 2005, and 2006. In 2007, there was only a Super Boys competition. They are crazy popular in mainland China. Out of the girls, the main ones are: 2004-Kristy Zhang aka Zhang Han Yun,
2005(best year)-Chris Lee aka Li Yuchun(though she doesn't have the best voice), Bibi aka Zhou Bichang, Jane Zhang(amazing voice), and J He aka He Jie
2006-Laure Shang, Sitar Tan aka Tan Weiwei, Ai Mengmeng, and Jade Liu aka Liu Liyang (she signed with SHE and Fahrenheit's company)
Super Boys:
Jason Zhang aka Zhang Jie (very multi-talented), Vision aka Wei Chen(cutest), Allen Su aka Su Xing (best voice), Chen Chusheng, and Ham aka Yu Haoming

Personally, I really like Bibi, Jane Zhang, J He, Jason Zhang, Vision, and Allen Su out all of them. The other ones aren't bad, neither.

Other than the Super family, I like Leehom, SHE, Jay, FIR, and JJ Lin's songs(but not voice) and sometimes Jolin and Cyndi.

LeeHom is awesome
how he can switch between music styles and languages
:]

I'm looking for something in the same genre as F.I.R. Any suggestions anyone?

I love mayday's song 'perfume'

JJ lin is awesome!!
And of course leehom and jay, david tao, tank, cao ge are too

angela zhang may have an annoying voice (irks you after a while haha) her vocals are pretty good, and she has alot of really good songs
jane zhang ! Has such a nice voice, she's pretty too
I like hejie, zhang jie, weichen

li yu chun is sooo popular but urgh, her voice isn't even good, and she looks like a man
