WANG LEEHOM <3- My favorite C-pop artist Homeboy
Jay Chou - First introduction to cpop, very talented young man. Sometimes his music can get a bit repetitive but always good to listen to.
Elva Hsiao - Lovely voice, I always feel surprised by her music.
Deserts Chang - Nice acoustic beats her music is very relaxing to listen to,
Ken Zhu - Nice to fall asleep to..
Fish Leong - Beautiful, powerful voice, I love her.
Cyndi Wang - I like her music beats and and of course, her voice.

蘇打錄 (sodagreen) - LOVE THEM. they are simply amazing~~ favorite song is 小情歌, but all their songs are wonderful. honestly, i think they are the only mainstream taiwanese band worth listening to.. (besides mayday)
盧廣仲 (crowd lu) - his songs are pretty good (i got to see him perform live and it was great!)
although i love the singers coming out from a million stars (yoga lin, aska yang, jam hsiao), their debut albums weren't that satisfying to me. =\ just my opinion though. i know plenty of people who love yoga lin's first album.

I love his album. It doesn't put me to sleep and isn't very poppy either.
My fav. tracks: Love Story & 放生
I can't find my old post, but my other favs:
Zhang Li Yin - "I Will" is an awesome album
Gary Cao- "Superwoman" song
David Tao - he's my fav. I haven't listened to him for a while... "Only friends", "Twenty Two", "Spring Wind" (i think that's feat. Tension)
Tension - " My Story" good album
Quincy Tan - 片尾曲 (very emotional)

I think the problem with C-Pop is that the talent pool is relatively small compared to K-Pop and definitely J-Pop. Basically, 99% of the C-Pop singers come from HK and Taiwan, a total population of less than 30 million. South Korea itself has much bigger population that that. And C-Pop caters to a disportionately large audience of not only HK and Taiwan but also Mainland China. I think with a larger audience, a lot of the songs will get generic. K-Pop and J-Pop doesn't have that problem. There are so many talented singers in Mainland but due to the restrictive government, it's hard for them to get success out of Mainland. That's just my two cents.

><'' i definitely disagree with some above mentioned BUT its all subjective so..=)
anyways i've come back with yet another few:
-Landy Wen: seriously I don't know why I didn't try her music until now, she's got such a beautiful voice and all the lovely heart warming (or breaking) hits from the late 90s on.
-BY2: Quality music for teens..they're 16 but very talented. **New group**
-Y2J: I would describe them as JS meet FIR plus a rock feel, normally i wouldn't go for that but their voices actually blend together so well...and the music isnt what typical rock is...i cant describe it but...just not all about the intruments and loudness but it's got a lot of passion. **New group**

I think
Claire Guo/Guo Jing and Fan Fan/Fan Wei Qi are really good singers...
I really like their songs such as:
1.
Claire Guo : Xia Yi Ge Tian Liang, Wo Bu Xiang Wang Ji Ni, and so on...
Her previous & latest album were great...
2.
Fan Fan : Hei Bai Pei, Yi Ge Xing De Ju Li, Shi Fei Ti, Na Xie Hua Er, Wo Men Ji Nian Ri, Yi Ge Xiang Xia Tian, Yi Ge Xiang Qiu Tian, and so on...
I really like her the best... Her songs either she composed herself or not were AWESOME...
Then there're
Fish Leung and Elva Hsiao... They're really good singers too...
For the males, I still think
Lee Hom & Jay Zhou are the BEST one... hehehehe...

You went there. =o
But ya, most of the famous ones come from Taiwan. If you consider it to be "Chinese" or not, that's up to you. Chinese music refers to music in Chinese. That's why we consider music from Singapore and Malaysia to be C-Pop as well when they're sung in Chinese.

MY FAVORITES:
1) FIR. A definate yes! My favorite song is 我们的爱 (Our Love), the lyrics, and the vocals are just beau-ti-ful. Ah! Makes me cry!
2) Jay Chou. Hhahha, Mr. Musical-Genious. I LOVE how he incorporates chinese culture into his songs, a must listen!
3) Lee Hom. Typically, your average asian singer's english will never get any better than him--he grew up in the US, and started to learn chinese @ age 18!!!
4) EVONNE HSU. I JUST CANNOT BELIVE HOW LITTLE PEOPLE KNOW HER! She was born in Texas, and raised in the US. A beautiful girl, with a beautiful voice! Her song SUDDENLY I MISS YOU is great, and it was sung by a korean singer first.
5) SUPERBOYS. I know some people didn't like the Supergirls (I am not such a big fan either), but what about the SUPERBOYS?!?!? I LOVE 'EM! The summer 2007 competition was great (they didn't have one this year 'cause of the Olympics), and ALLEN SU (苏醒) is my personal fav. He grew up in China, but went abroad to Australia for college. Wei Chen (魏晨) is my second fav. HOTTIE! alert, hahha! ^^ He also has great vocals. The partnering performance with supergirl He Jie was ahh-mazing.
6) Guang Liang. Oh! His MV 'Fairytale' (Tong Hua) is a must watch. It made me cry so hard thoughh...
7) Zhang Li Yin. As people already said, she is the chinese boa. Her 'Timeless' with Xiah Junsu of DBSK is TIMELESS~!!! ^^ (at least in my dicitonary!) Her vocals are unbelievable, and she's only 19 (debuted when she was 16)! She's ma idol!
Hhehh hehh, hope ya'll will try some of these artists!!!

When it comes to foreign music, I'm very picky. I tried to search for Chinese artists and couldn't find
very many quality Chinese female artists. But, today I found Alicia Pan through Paul Kim's (American idol
contestant) myspace. Her voice is strong and smooth!!! And she sings Rnb music!!!
I love both her English and Chinese songs.
Unfortunately, she seems inactive. Her latest album released was in 2006. Anyone has anymore info on her?
She's Taiwanese right? Her profile says Taiwan.... She speaks good English.

Oh, here's the link to her myspace:

Not really South Korea's pretty tiny. They've got around 40 million, not much more than HK and Taiwan.
The mainland singers are great, and I don't see why they need to promote themselves in anywhere but Hk and Taiwan. Why go to Korea where Korean artists are struggling with dropping sales and a flood of boybands who eat up any market potential? Why go to Japan and compete with the bands that couldn't cut it in America?
If you're famous in all of China, do you really need to ask others to know who you are?
The Chinese population enjoys their songs and so who cares?
Some mainland Chinese singer recs:
Zhang Jie
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD-9ZB5Tn3Q Best olympics song ever! Dislike the guy but he is extremely talented, maybe the most talented of China's crop of new young singers.
Zhaxi Dunzhu:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNpzwbvKorY voice is like rich butter, and extremely hot
Chen Chusheng:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LCoASVrjF4 MV does remind me of Maroon 5, even though he's not really part of a band
Peng Tan -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOCjUi_P9DQ Indie type singer. Hot, and writes his own music! Used to be part of a band.
Hou Xian:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hsTlIIhk3c Sounds a bit like Jay Chou, but with Zhong Guo Feng maxed out. Very talented songwriter
Anson Hu:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKnKy5M0oDc Voice is dead sexy
Qiao Renliang:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvnAdP_rHXc Just sexy. So sexy. Why so sexy Kimi?
BOBO -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hSzkrbeK8w boy group that can actually sing. Plus they're so cute, and squishable.
I pay less attention to female singers, but...
Cao Fang - Her song was in the GE commercials
Jade Liu - Her voice is so clear and crisp and soothing. I don't know why people hate on the Supergirls. They can all sing. And their songs are great. I love Li Yuchun's new EP. Very Zhong Guo Feng.

Quality Chinese music isn't pop music, end of story.
I disagree that C-pop is inferior to K-pop and J-pop, C-pop is slower at copying American music but you've got to be pretty limited in your music collection to think most pop singers are good singers at all.

i just discovered a rapper from taiwan that i have never heard about and his name is 宋岳庭. Aparetnly he died a young age (23?) of bone cancer. Oh. He lived an angsty life. I like three of his songs (the only ones on youtube?) which are "Life's a struggle", "let me fly" and "daydream". T___T his bio seems so sad.

well, generally speaking, if talking about great chinese music quality, it will be a battle between wang lee hom vs jay chou. both of them are the top nowadays. i personally wang lee hom is better because he always tried different, thus, he is more versatile, whereas jay chou's songs all sound the same. nevertheless, there are lots of singers out there who have good music. singers who can really catch my attention and i consider them as very great singers are sam lee and gary cao. go listen to ca jian er guo ( sam lee ). i think it is one of the best chinese song ever. and gary cao has bei pan and superwoman, which i think wonderful songs as well. jj lin? he has very good singing skill, but his songs are not that great, but not bad also. there are a lots of good singers also, like tank, nicholas teo, david tao, guang liang, eason chan. but their songs are not that good yet. they only have very few songs that made them great. jacky cheung? he is the best chinese singer ever. seriously, he has the greatest vocal in the world. and his music is the best during 90's. however, his songs nowadays ( "by your side" album )couldn't catch teenagers' attention(which i think the music is still good though). so,here i rate them(my personal thoughts) :
from music quality : wang lee hom, jay chou, sam lee, gary cao, jj lin. those are my top 5.
from singing skill : jacky cheung, jj lin, eason chan, wang lee hom, sam lee.

A-mei through the multiple tmes i posted here! She is simply the queen...her voice, omg I don't know how she does it. It is filled with emotion, and she has hands down the best techniques/vocals in Taiwan, not many singers can do both the technical part and bring out such beautiful passion simultaneously in such a flawless way, even ones I recommanded, she takes singing to a whole new level..!!!

Super Girls are horrible?
................
have you been listening to the wrong people? because I can't really imagine anyone not liking someone from the Super Girls...
I mean, how can you put Jane Zhang, or Bibi, or Tan Weiwei, or even He Jie, in a sentence with boybands/girlbands/Jolin/Rainie?
They are like polar opposites.
I mean, there are some Super Girls that go on the cutesy looks side (ie Baby Zhang).
But some are amazing singers with tons of potential.
There's a reason why Super Girls basically cover every major mandarin music-producing company, and it's not for their looks.

But yeah.. just like xvampirenight, I'm trying to look for some upbeat Chinese music too, but I haven't really been able to find any.
