NEW YORK - Lance Bass, band member of 'N Sync, says he's gay and in a "very stable" relationship with a reality show star. Bass, who formed 'N Sync with Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick, tells People magazine that he didn't earlier disclose his sexuality because he didn't want to affect the group's popularity.

"I knew that I was in this popular band and I had four other guys' careers in my hand, and I knew that if I ever acted on it or even said (that I was gay), it would overpower everything," he tells the magazine.

'N Sync is known for a string of hits including "Bye Bye Bye" and "It's Gonna Be Me." The band went on hiatus in 2002. Bass has also found headlines for undertaking astronaut training and failing to raise money for a trip into space.

Bass says he wondered if his coming out could prompt "the end of 'N Sync." He explains, "So I had that weight on me of like, `Wow, if I ever let anyone know, it's bad.' So I just never did."

The singer says he's in a "very stable" relationship with 32-year-old actor Reichen Lehmkuhl, winner of season four of CBS' "Amazing Race."

Bass and Fatone, 29, are developing a sitcom pilot inspired by the screwball comedy "The Odd Couple," in which his character will be gay.

"The thing is, I'm not ashamed — that's the one thing I went to say," Bass says. "I don't think it's wrong, I'm not devastated going through this. I'm more liberated and happy than I've been my whole life. I'm just happy."

Wow. That's really good for him that he came out. I'm a little surprised, but then again, there's always been that part of me that's like, "Maybe he is..." Either way, Lance is still cute.

aw man lance was my favorite out of nsync T_T; i agree with yoojini in that coming out while nsync was still going on couldve hurt the group bc back then it wouldnt have been accepted as well as it wouldve in recent times.

No, but really, I commend him for being honest like that. But then again, what choice did he have anyway? There were enough photos and rumors stirring with him and Lehmkuhl -- might as well put an end to it since it was getting pretty obvious.

i'm not surprised at all. or maybe it was because i was never really a big fan of NSYNC growing up. i've always thought he had some sorta gay vibe. he looked feminie compared to the rest of the boy. took him quite awhile to come out of the closet. they might be one of the hottest couples as well in the celeb world.

For a while I've been reading rumors about him being gay but as rumors go, you don't really put stock in them. Still, I'm happy for him that he finally came out in public

This article didn't really shock me, but to see it on msn.com -- that was pretty shocking. I have always been a Lance fan (even when everyone & their mama was a Justin fan), and as a fan, I always KNEW that he was gay/had gay tendencies. But even after seeing him 'outed' officially, I'm still very proud of him. I've always loved that Southern down-to-earth feel Lance had to him, and even though his space mission failed, I support him in his efforts for trying.

Anyways, I just wanted to post this so people can SUPPORT LANCE in all his descisions.
Any *N'Sync fan who dislikes them because one of their members are gay should be shanked<3
It took a lot of guts to come out, especially as a celebrity...and I just thought that was very endearing of him.

I've always known, but because of how he was raised (in the South, Baptist heavily religious family), I'm sure it wasn't easy to come out. He was always my favorite *Nsync member and always will be. Even though his space mission failed, he's an optimistic man for trying.

Didn't really see that coming even though people were always making fun of boy bands being GAY. He was also a little more conservative and kept to himself moreso than the other members. It's good that he came out about it though (after the band split).
