yeah it makes me sad that the original Irvine thread disappeared into oblivion!
I'm taking three classes (Honors HumCore, Econ 20, and Math 2), a total of 16 units.
what about you?
by the way your avatar picture looks familiar. I think I might've facebook-surfed onto yours haha

Aug 9 2006, 01:10 PM
I think I'm taking 2, because that's what was recommended at Academic Advising. But I feel like that's too few. Tentatively, I'm going to take HumCore and Intro to American Gov. Maybe I'll also take a math class or Soc Sci 3A.
vc1188
Aug 9 2006, 03:16 PM
^ oh weird! my academic advisor (social sciences) said that taking three is just right (12 units). I want to take just two, because I'm scared I won't be able to handle the workload. But at the same time I'm scared I'm not getting enough units. At this point, 180 seems like A LOTTTT.

Aug 10 2006, 05:58 PM
im taking 3 too, thats already too much for me, are u guys all incoming freshmen?
vc1188
Aug 10 2006, 10:54 PM
^ Yeah, I am. gosh three is really difficult to handle? ugh and one of my classes is an honors class. But I was looking at my major requirements and there seems to be an endless list of classes I need to take. I might even need to sign up for summer sessions at some point.

Aug 10 2006, 11:27 PM
Wahh..? I'm taking four classes!
I asked my advisor if I could take another one and he looked at me funny and said it would be really intense. He said because I'm an incoming freshman, I should take fewer classes and that 18 units was too much to handle at first. I was like oh-okay! lol, so I am plan to take four classes:
University Studies2
Writing 39A
Econ20A
--I plan on taking a chinese course, but I need to wait for my placement results. If I don't take it the first quarter, I plan on replacing it with a Psych class.
Glad to know you guys are going to Irvine too!

It's really crazy. Yesterday was when the first enrollment window opened for CHP and Summer Bridge people and hella classes already have a waitlist. o_o The # of people enrolled hasn't even reached the "Max." in WebSOC. really weird.
anyway I'm in CHP so I enrolled yesterday. I'm an idiot and I thought I could enroll in any discussion I wanted, not realizing the discussions correspond to certain lectures -__- so now I have an 8AM class (I was trying to avoiiiiiid anything before 9)
andd Irvine wasn't cool enough to provide those cool timetables for us to visualize our schedules, so I made my own hahah

even tho ure only taking 2 classes, its worth the units of 3 classes. ure humcore discussion is worth 4 and ure humcore lecture is also worth 4. usually discussions arent worth any units but humcore is pretty work intensive so they doubled the units. oh and if you add socsci3a try ure hardest NOT to get wrigley!!!! good luck wit humcore, i loved that class!

Nice to see a UCI topic here
I'm planning to take:
- Humcore 1A
- Either between Psychology P9 (Depending on the class being full by the time my window opens and I'm pretty sure it will since it's a popular course and there's not that many spots available as of now

), and Intro to Asian American Studies.
I would love to stick with those two classes (12 units), but I'm afraid I'll fall short on units later on (I may be wrong). It seems like most people are taking three courses as incoming freshman this fall. I don't want to feel like I'm cheating myself, but then I've heard that humcore is challenging.
Is anyone else taking the seminar for humcore? I know it isn't required and it's worth no units, but I've heard that it may help you get questions answered that you couldn't ask during a lecture.
Zot...zot...zot...

I was a total choir lover in high school and I wish I could take choir at UCI. But it's 7PM-9:50PM and I bet I'd be too tired to go at that time. plus once I move out and live in apartment, I won't want to commute to Irvine just to take choir.. as much as I love it. bah. I guess I'll just take... yoga or some dance class starting winter quarter =]

HumCore has A LOT more reading and writing, so prepared to spend a lot of time on this class. To me, HumCore seems a lot more fulfilling academically because of all the topics that will be covered.
When I went to SPOP, a counselor said that Writing39 is very straightforward, you work on developing paragraphs, essays, personal writing style, etc. I guess it's up to you what you prefer to learn about. A big thing to consider is that HumCore fulfills a lot of breadth requirements (categories I, IV, and VII-A)
Here's the syllabus for HumCore 2006-2007. It has the list of books and also the lesson plan for every week.

Well, at orientation, they said that you usually have to take a discussion class with a lecture. It's just a smaller portions of your lecture class where you go more in depth on the subject you're learning, I think. I'm not sure if you're graded, though.

If you log into your UCI Student Billing System. Under USHIP Waiver Application on the left sidebar you fill it out and submit it by Sept. 8th, 2006. It's for your Undergraduate Health Insurance Fee (USHIP) Waiver Application.
Here is the link to the UCI Student Billing System*As far as the packets that were mailed to you, I believe that it's information on the student insurance and whatnot (Same thing), but double check to make sure by calling in, I still have to read through those packets.
+ You may already know this, but on a sidenote, be sure to ALWAYS double check what/when you need to turn things in. You can call into the office, check online, and ask others as well. Hope this helped

BTW, my name is Steve, nice to meet you guys

UCI is a retarded school. and for all you incoming 1st yrs taking 4-5 classes, wow gud luck ur gonna have a GREAT TIME >_<
btw, discussions vary depending on ur classes. for sum discussions, they take roll, and it counts towards participation pts. in the class, and sum you dont have to turn up at all. but all i kno is that discussions aren't a seperate grade. hope that helped you guys a lil bit more.
