rose: consolidation is you take all your student loans federal and private and you roll them into one payment pretty much. its usually a better interest rate then what you begin with cause its avg'd together.
lidge_fan: true, but you're thinking either about private loan origination or that psl does private loan consolidation. neither of which they do, i worked for them over the summer and honestly they're one of the cleanest companies you could ask for. they don't do private loans at all cause first of all private loans usually have a higher interest rate, and if you consolidate private with federal (government loans) then the federal loans lose all the title IV benefits such as forbearance, deferment, and forgiveness. stuff like that

are consolidation places "sort-of" like credit unions?

sphynkter: its pretty much a written govt has stating the terms. title IV is the section under which the benefits are stated. or so im told
rosa: not that i know of, pretty much government has a program where they allow us to take all your loans roll it into one and stuff like that. no background checks or w/e. you apply, qualify, and get consolidated. that should be all there is to it. if a consolidation company does a credit check on you. and makes you pay for the consolidation then thats whack. consolidation is federal program so you can't charge to do it. lol
